RENSSELAER COUNTY GARDEN TOUR - JULY 7th Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County will hold its annual “Rensselaer County Garden Tour” on Thursday, July 7, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. This drive-it-yourself tour will feature more than ten gardens in the Town of North Greenbush. This year’s gardens include container ideas, rain gardens, dry stream beds, raised bed vegetables, perennials, water features and ponds, gardens with an Asian aesthetic and much more. Participants will enjoy seeing the gardens and learning from their owners, and will take home dozens of inspirational ideas.

Maps will be on sale for $10.00 per person or $30.00 per car for 3 or more people and can be purchased from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. the day of the tour at Pat’s Barn, Rensselaer Technology Park, 110 Defreest Drive, Troy, NY 12180. BIBLE STUDY AT CHURCH OF THE REDEEMER “Go West, Young Man.” We journey with Paul as he continues his missionary journey to what is now Greece. Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino has announced the 2016 schedule of the County’s Rabies Vaccination Clinics. The clinics aim to prevent human exposure to the potentially deadly disease by immunizing domestic animals and pets that could potentially carry the virus. “Vaccinating your pets is crucial to preventing your family from being exposed to this potentially deadly disease. I encourage all pet owners to take advantage of these rabies clinics and the educational information available from our County Health Department on this topic as well as a host of other health related issues,” said County Executive Jimino. During the upcoming clinics, Rensselaer County Department of Health staff will provide the appropriate rabies vaccination and booster shots as mandated by the New York State Department of Health to cats, ferrets and dogs. Owners are asked to present their pets’ most recent immunization certificate, and all pets must be secured either in a carrier or on a leash. The first hour of each clinic is dedicated to cats and ferrets with the second hour dedicated to dogs.

CAMP SCULLY ON SNYDER’S LAKE Camp Scully is a non-profit organization that provides day and overnight summer camp programs. It is located on Snyder’s Lake in Wynantskill. Registration for all summer sessions is currently in full swing. One unique aspect of Camp Scully’s program is its focus on providing scholarships for children in our community whose families do not have the financial means to send their children to summer camp.

All children are welcomed at Camp Scully and a family’s inability to pay should not be an obstacle, all fees collected go towards funding these families.

The Camp has 22 acres of developed land, forest and beach front and offer a variety of outdoor programming including archery, kayaking, fort-building, sports, campfire-cooking, canoeing and swimming. Swim lessons are also available.

Additionally, craft programs including pottery and jewelry making are available alongside drama and dance classes.

NYS BAR SPONSORS FREE PROGRAMS on HEALTH CARE DECISION MAKING The public can learn about the importance of signing advance directives about future health care and legal matters at “Your Decisions Matter” programs in various locations across the state between April and August.

The free programs are sponsored by the New York State Bar Association.

Volunteer attorneys will explain topics that include: why you need a will; differences between power of attorney, living will and health care proxy documents; do-not-resuscitate orders; organ donations; guardianship issues; and probate.

The expansion will add three new branch offices to THA apartment locations in an effort to enhance access to services, and meet the needs of underserved populations.

Thousands of volunteer host families in rural, suburban, and small town communities along the East Coast from North Carolina to Maine and Southern Canada open their hearts and homes to New York City children from low-income communities through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, notfor-profit agency, has provided free and enriching summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children since 1877.

Host families open their homes to children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer away from New York City.

VETERAN’S FLAGS: This year when the VFW honors veterans by placing American flags at their graves, they will find flag holders. The holders are fashioned of hollow pipes by one of our Trustees and placed with the help of others. These pipes will allow us to remove the flags before they are destroyed by harsh winters while still providing a marker for new flag placement the following year. If we need to place a flag holder for your loved one, please contact Sandra Billings at the e-mail shown above.

ELECTION INSPECTORS NEEDED! Election Inspectors are needed in the Town of Brunswick for the upcoming Elections. Our town has 10 voting districts that need to be staffed. Inspectors are reimbursed

by Rensselaer County for training classes and Election Day work. Be involved in the process!

JOIN GIRL SCOUTS! Girl Scouts is wonderful organization in our local community! Our Girl Scout program allows the girls to figure out what pathway (ex. Individual, camp, troop, event, and series) they would like to experience as girl scouts. Many girls are usually in troops in which they plan and carry out different activities. These activities can be based on badges, journeys (bigger projects), service projects (ex.

Collecting items for people, making items for others), or just for fun activities. Troops usually meet once every 2 weeks. The younger troops tend to focus more on badge work, the middle school troops and high school level troops tend to focus more on travel and fun activities. Also in our community, we have a teen troop (6th – 12th grade) that is dedicated to hiking (includes primitive camping) and only does trips during the year.

Girl Scouts is for all girls kindergarten through 12th grade.

Our neighborhood supports girls attending Red Mill, Bell Top, Rensselaer Schools, Goff Middle School, and Columbia High School. We especially need kindergarten troop leaders (all schools).

COUNTING TO THE TOP – A FREE SUMMER MATH PROGRAM The North Chatham Library will offer a FREE summer tutoring program in math for children in grades 1 and 2 who are below grade level. Kindergarten students will be included if there is room. Children who are the furthest from grade level will have priority.

Tutoring will be individual instruction for 30 minutes twice a week for 6 weeks, on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from July 5th through August 11th.

Eligibility for the program will be determined by teacher recommendation.

Wendy Monsell is a second grade teacher with 26 years of experience in elementary education. She will be using a combination of hands on, problem solving methods, and math games to teach the New York State curriculum for first or second grade.
