Competition for boys and girls ages 9 to 14 will be held on Saturday September 30 from 9AM to 2PM. It will take place at the North Colonie Soccer Complex at 539 Boght Road.. Books for Troops Needs Strong Volunteers

CAPITAL DISTRICT Books for Troops has now reopened its collection site at Halfmoon Town Hall on route 236 in Halfmoon from 9-4 daily. The bin is inside on the left. Once more we thank you for your generous donation of books.

However, our biggest needs right now are for DVDs, Books on Tape, and puzzle books. They help the troops on the long nights of night watches or on those many sleepless nights. Book drives for these items would be welcome. Books for Troops has continually asked for people who could mail our books to our Post Office two miles away and occasionally to other places. You must be strong enough to lift heavy boxes of books. We mail about once every two weeks and it takes less than two hours. We still have no volunteers. Please contact ekeegan3@nycap.rr.com.

If more than one person volunteers, then you can alternate trips. However the mailing has to be done during the day when the post office is open 9-5. Please help us with this very essential part of our program/

Traffic can be bad for your health and also bad for your car. According to a University of Surrey study published in Science Daily, pollution levels inside of cars were found to be 40 percent higher while sitting in traffic jams or at red lights compared to levels in free-flowing traffic. The World Health Organization considers interior car pollution one of the top 10 health risks faced by humans. Health implications are not the only hazard posed by traffic jams. Stop-and-go traffic also takes its toll on vehicles. When idling, engine ventilation systems are at their weakest, warns Road and Travel. As a result, acidic combustion products and incompletely burned fuel in the engine can start to form engine deposits. Over time, such deposits may clog fuel injectors and interfere with the flow of fuel to the combustion chamber. Traffic can age vehicle engines and their braking systems. Using brake fluid and oils for extreme driving conditions may help prevent some damage. Avoiding rush hour is another way to improve personal health and safeguard the condition of the vehicle.

What Is Car Sharing And How Does It Work?

Car sharing is wildly popular in large cities where residents may not have cars of their own.

But to those living outside of large metropolises, such services may be less familiar.

The Carsharing Association says car sharing is aimed at decreasing personal car ownership, reducing the distances vehicles travel and decreasing dependence on fossil fuels. Car sharing services are often membership-based, and memberships are open to all drivers who meet certain qualifications.

In 2000, Massachusetts-based Zipcar, one of the first car sharing companies, began with a fleet of only four vehicles. The Transportation Sustainability Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley says roughly 900,000 Americans now use similar car sharing services today.

Car sharing services are particularly helpful for city dwellers and college students who find it impractical to own their cars. Personal vehicles can cost thousands of dollars per year when insurance, fuel and maintenance are added up, making car sharing services far more practical for drivers who rarely drive.

Car sharing services are similar to traditional rental cars in that members pay to borrow vehicles. However, car-sharing services are designed for shorter periods of time and people only pay for their actual usage. When we heard about Baby, it became apparent to us that her old owners who surrendered her did not know how to take proper care of her in her older age. Baby is a 7-8 year old Chihuahua mix, her nails were too long, and she was overweight. Her owner passed away, and then a member of the family surrendered Baby to a shelter down south.

She is very, very sweet, gets along great with other dogs, cats, and kids!! Baby has been vetted, had her nails clipped, and now she is feeling and looking much better.

Growing Trends In Today’s Homes

Although the heydays of the real estate boom of the early 2000s have not quite returned, things look positive. In the United States, 1,226,000 new homes were built in 2016, according to data from Consumer Reports. That was the most since 2007.

Resales also have been more promising. The National Association of Realtors® says the median number of days a home was on the market in April 2017 reached a new low of 29 days. However, low supply levels did stanch existing home sales somewhat. By mid-2017, the market was a seller’s market, with more people in the market for homes than properties available. But sales during that time were still outpacing sales figures from a year prior. In fact, in May 2017, home sales in Canada increased to their highest level in more than five years, according to the Canadian MLS® Systems.

Low interest rates on mortgages and more confidence in the economy has driven many people to make improvements to their existing homes. As is typical, the things homeowners are looking for in 2017 have evolved from years past. The following are some trends that are helping to steer the real estate market further.

• Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures.

However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

• Matte finishes: Stainless steel and luster have been popular for years. However, the next big thing is matte finishes on faucets, appliances and even in countertops. These less flashy finishes are prized for their warmth and elegance. While some high-end models with matte finishes have been available for several years, even less expensive models are now available.

• Smarter technology: Many homeowners are embracing smart technology throughout their homes, but it’s not just lights that turn on with voice command or more efficient thermostats. Innovative technology includes toilets that can autonomously stay clean and sanitized, refrigerators equipped with cameras so homeowners can see the contents inside and indoor food recyclers that can turn food waste into fertilizer.

How To Get A Handle On Work-Related Stress Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress.

The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort.

Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there are a handful of ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers.

• Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress.

Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such dis-

cussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

• Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress.

And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

• Embrace relaxation methods. The APA recommends professionals coping with workplace stress embrace techniques that can effectively alleviate stress. Such techniques include meditation and deep-breathing exercises and can help workers develop their ability to focus purposefully on a single activity. That improved focus may help workers better navigate hectic working environments without succumbing to the stress such environments can produce.

Work-related stress is a significant issue for many professionals. But working in tandem with their employers can help professionals effectively cope with that stress.

Purpose of vehicle air filters Vehicle combustion engines operate with a mixture of fuel and air. Without oxygen, gasoline or diesel fuels cannot burn properly and power the engine. The air filter’s job is to prevent dirt, dust and other debris from being sucked into an engine.

Otherwise, grime can build up and impede engine performance or cause erosion of parts under the hood.

It is much more cost-effective to routinely change air

filters than replace expensive engine parts. Rather than ignoring air filters until the last minute, drivers can take steps to keep filters clean and functioning at peak performance.

• Improve fuel efficiency.

Clogged air filters reduce air flow to engines, resulting in an improper ratio of air to fuel. As a result, spark plugs can be negatively affected and the engine may idle roughly or misfire. These scenarios can greatly affect

fuel efficiency as well as cause engine deposits from rich fuel. To save money and trips to the fuel pump, replace filters regularly. According to GearHeads, for older cars, studies have indicated that by replacing a dirty air filter, one can improve gas mileage by as much as 14 percent.

• Reduce stress on the engine. Because of the air-tofuel mix in engines, even a mixture that is slightly off balance can affect what is
