Stamp Out Hunger CAPITAL REGION – On Saturday, May 11, 2013, Campbell Soup Company will join forces with the National Association of Letter Carriers to support Feeding America and help Stamp Out Hunger across America. Now in it’s 21st year, the annual food drive helps provide assistance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table. “The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is important for our local communities because it helps stock food banks and pantries for the summer, a time when there’s an increased need for food assistance, especially for children who are out of school,” said Fredric, V. Rolando, NALC president. “The letter carriers are commited to supporting the drive by picking up and delivery food donations to local Feeding America food banks and hunger-relief organizations in their markets.”

A Day Just For Mom

Every year as the second Sunday in May approaches, millions of people across the country turn their thoughts to Mom and find ways to let her know how much she means to them. Although it wasn’t always celebrated on the second Sunday in May, Mother’s Day has been around in some form since ancient times. The ancient Greeks and Romans held a festival each spring honoring maternal goddesses like Rhea and Cybele. During these celebrations, participants would put on parades, play games and participate in masquerades. Early Christians held their own festival in honor of the Virgin Mary. When the English took up the celebration, they expanded it to include all mothers and renamed it Mothering Sunday. On this day, individuals attended services for the Virgin Mary and then visited their own mothers, bringing them flowers, gifts and treats. The popularity of Mothering Sunday had faded considerably by the start of the 19th century but remerged in the 1870s due to the efforts of activist and writer Julia Ward Howe. Howe thought there should be a day in honor of mothers in the United States. She introduced her idea in 1872, calling for the celebration to take place on June 2 and all mothers to take a stand against war. Howe had seen the devastation the loss of life in the Civil War had had on mothers everywhere. Although many embraced her idea of a day for peace, the celebration of Mother’s Day as we know it today did not come about until the early 20th century when Anna Jarvis introduced it. As a child, Anna Jarvis had heard her mother pray for a day dedicated solely to mothers, living and deceased, and honoring their contributions. When her mother died in 1905, Jarvis recalled her mother’s wish and started campaigning for a national holiday for mothers everywhere. She wrote letters to many leaders in her community and across the country and spoke about the matter at many functions.

By 1911, Jarvis’ efforts had paid off, with nearly every state in the country celebrating the day. Just three years later on May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill into law, establishing the second Sunday of every May Mother’s Day. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated in various nations around the world. Spouses and children all over take time out to honor the mothers in their lives, and for that, Anna Jarvis and her mother would be thankful.

Not Quite The Same By Ronda Addy Even though it is sometimes referred to as Mother’s Day, Mothering Day in the United Kingdom differs somewhat from Mother’s Day in the United States. Celebrated in honor of the Virgin Mother Mary, Mothering Sunday traditionally involved children, mostly girls working as domestic servants, who were given the day off so they could visit their mothers. While Mother’s Day in the United States is always on the second Sunday of May, Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which varies from year to year. Dating back to the 16th century, Mothering Sunday was a religious holiday designed to bring families together. After they turned 10, children

Once a year, these children would be given a day off in the middle of Lent so they could visit their “Mother Church” and their family. The children would often bring gifts like special cakes and flowers to their mothers. Over time, the holiday expanded to include all mothers, not just the Mother Church.

are often relaxed. In northern England and Scotland, the day is called Carling Sunday because people like to eat carling, pancakes prepared from steeped peas fried in butter with pepper and salt The day is also called Rose Sunday because purple robes worn in the church are replaced with rose-colored ones and mothers attending the services are offered posies of flowers.

Mothering Sunday has several names. Although it is not commonly used today, Mothering Sunday is sometimes referred to as Refreshment Sunday because fasting rules

A food closely associated with Mothering Sunday is Simnel, a two-layered fruitcake made of almond paste and 11 balls of marzipan icing on top representing the 11

disciples. The cake is boiled in water, baked and saved until Easter. According to legend, a man named Simon and his wife Nell argued whether the cake should be baked or boiled. In the end, they both won and the cake was named after both of them; hence, Sim-Nell.

Over time, Mothering Sunday has become significantly less religious and is now a close cousin of the Mother’s Day celebration in the United States. Today children give their mothers gifts and flowers and take them out to eat on these special days.

Unique gifts ideas for Mother’s Day Whether she’s still hard at work raising children or her kids have grown up and now have children of their own, Mom deserves our best efforts come Mother’s Day. And while traditional gifts like flowers and chocolate might make for thoughtful Mother’s Day gifts, those who want to go the extra mile for Mom this year can consider the following unique gift ideas.

youth when Mom would relax while listening to some of her favorite music on a lazy summer afternoon. Why not take a stroll down Memory Lane and take Mom to see one of her favorite acts in concert? Even if you have outgrown Mom’s musical tastes, she will still appreciate the chance to spend an evening out on the town with her kids and some good music.

If Broadway is a bit too far for you to travel, do your homework and find a traveling production of a former Broadway show. Such productions often feature many of the same actors who made the play famous on Broadway so you’re still bound to see an unforgettable show Mom will love.

Shop smart for Mother’s Day Come spring, shoppers often ask, “What gift should Iget Mom for Mother’s Day?” How do people transform the sentiments they have for their mother into gifts that represent love and devotion? Buying a Mother’s Day gift is no easy task, especially for those who wait until the last minute to do their shopping.

the certificates or find gifts, as there is a good chance Mom will put off pampering herself and you would not want the gift to expire before she has a chance to use it. In compliance with the law, chain restaurant gift cards don’t expire for at least five years from purchase. Those might be your safest bet.

Beginning early can ease the pressure of Mother’s Day shopping. Research gift options at least a month prior so that you can read reviews on products and services to guarantee quality. You also want to make sure the gift will arrive on time if you will be ordering your gift online. Here are other ways to shop in a smart manner.

* Verify a business. Although Mom may love a cute boutique that just opened, verify the business before buying a

* Do some sleuthing. Play detective and take inventory of what Mom likes to do the most. If you ask your mother what she wants, she will likely brush off the question and tell you nothing. It is up to you to do the investigative work. Pay attention to conversations and see if there is anything she mentions wanting to try or something around the house that may need updating. Practical gifts are less likely to end up unopened in the basement or attic. * Check expiration dates. Gift certificates and cards for particular stores or services are popular come Mother’s Day. But it is essential to check expiration dates on

gift card from it. An unpredictable economy has made it even harder for new businesses to succeed, and you don’t Mom to be stuck with a worthless gift card should the new business not thrive. If she really likes a particular new business, take her on a shopping spree at the store instead. * Skip the chocolate overload. Flowers and chocolates

are traditional Mother’s Day gifts. However, calorie-conscious women may not want to be faced with the temptation of a warehouse-sized box of chocolate treats. If Mom truly loves chocolate, treat her to a gourmet piece or two, but don’t make that your main gift. * Avoid “final sale” items. It can be tempting to peruse the deep-discount rack at Mom’s favorite store when retailers cut prices on items in anticipation of a new season. However, these sales may come with restrictions on returns or exchanges. Unless you know Mom will like what you pick out, avoid the “final sale” racks in favor of items that can be returned or exchanged. * Ask for a price match. In an effort to keep a loyal customer base, many stores will price match against competitors’ ads. Therefore, if you feel more comfortable at a certain store, print out the advertised price and bring it to your favorite store. There’s a good chance they will give you the item for the same price. This works particularly well for tech gifts that typically go on sale in the days leading up to a holiday or special event.

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week Leonardo Italian Greyhound Mix, 6 Year Old Male, Grey/White

Hi, I’m Leonardo, but my friends call me Leo! I am as sweet as I am handsome and I just want to be the love of your life. I love to snuggle, sit on your lap while we watch tv, or even help you work. Basically I just want to do whatever you want to do! I did have really bad teeth but thanks to my friends at The Canterbury Animal Hospital I had a lot of them removed. Because of that I need to go home with someone who understands that I will probably need more dental work in the future. If you are interested in adopting me please email my friends at nhaynes@mohawkhumane.org.

Missy Retriever, Labrador/Terrier Pit Bull Mix, 1-1/2 Year Old Female, Chocolate/White Missy is a smart and friendly mutt. She is very attentive and would train easily. This girl makes you smile whenever you’re near her.

Margaret Domestic Short Hair Mix, 4 Year Old Female, Grey Mr. Jingles Domestic Short Hair Mix, 5 Year Old Male, Red Hi there, I’m Mr. Jingles, a wonderful red puss. I’m a really large fellow and I love to be petted. My former family adopted me not too long ago, but I didn’t get on with their resident cat. I really think I would be best as the only cat. After I get settled in my new home, you need to work with your vet and get me on a proper weight loss food plan. this will be so much healthier for me. Toys and play to help me exercise will be good, too.

For further information on adopting please call 434-8128 or visit www.mohawkhumane.org

Moving during certain times of the year can result in considerable savings. Moving during the summer, when children are out of school and the weather is nice, can make a move more manageable. Keep in mind that because late spring and summer are the peak moving seasons, they also tend to be more expensive. Many moving companies and truck rental agencies will charge a premium if you use their services during the summer. Furthermore, crews may change in the summer when students on vacation could fill in for regular, more experienced movers. High prices are not only reserved for those who buy a new house during the spring and summer. Renters may find spring and summer is also the peak season for rentals. Many apartment managers can attest that the dates between June 2 and August 30 are quite busy in terms of apartment turnover. College students are more likely to move as soon as the academic year ends, and many landlords plan leases to expire in the summer months to ensure that re-renting places will be easier thanks to a flooded apartment market. According to Apartment Wiz, a Houstonbased apartment locating service, although there might be greater apartment availability during the warm-weather months, it also means greater competition between prospective tenants. That greater competition can drive up prices.

But apartments are harder to fill in the fall or at the onset of winter. That’s because many people do not want the hassle of moving once school has started or the weather has chilled. Landlords who are stuck paying utilities and advertising fees for

vacant apartments are far more likely to negotiate rent prices, lease terms and even security deposits during the winter in an effort to fill the apartment quickly. People sitting with homes on the market are also more likely to negotiate during cooler months when foot traffic has fizzled out. That can make shopping for a home in the fall advantageous to home buyers. Here are some other tips to reduce stress and save money when moving into a new home or apartment. * Move mid-week. Weekends are a prime time for truck rentals and moving companies. Pick a Tuesday or a Wednesday to move, and you’re much more likely to find an available moving service (even during peak moving months); you may even be able to negotiate a lower rate.

* Pick a mid-month moving date. Many people move at the beginning of the month when leases are up or after mortgage payments are made. Fewer people move in the middle of the month, so you might find more affordable moving deals if you can wait a few extra weeks. * Schedule a fall or winter move. The American Moving and Storage Association says half of all moves occur during one-third of the year -- between the beginning of May and Labor Day. Beat the rush by moving outside of these dates. * Get an early start. Many people underestimate the amount of time it takes to actually move their belongings. Try to schedule a moving company to come very early in the morning to give you ample time to pack up the truck and unpack at your new home.
