WHERE IN THE WORLD IS USS SLATER? CAPITAL DISTRICT - A lot of people have been asking this question. To answer, USS SLATER is at Caddell Dry Dock and Repair in Staten Island. Typically, the ship is open to the public in Albany near the beginning of April. This season, after several years of fundraising, the ship has been taken to drydock for repairs to her hull. Drydocking is the periodic maintenance necessary to maintain the part of USS SLATER’s hull that is underwater. It’s been over 20 years since the ship has been in drydock, so this project is due. Drydocking is being funded by private individuals and foundations. No government funding is being used for this project. In fact, the Destroyer Escort Historical Museum, the non-profit organization that owns and maintains USS SLATER, receives no regular Federal, State, or local government funding. When the drydocking is complete, the USS SLATER will return to Albany and will open to the public. This is expected to be sometime in late May or early June. However, that may change pending unforeseen circumstances or weather issues. Public hours for the USS SLATER after the return to Albany will be Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is charged. Call 431-1943 for additional information or visit the website at www.ussslater.org. Keep up to date with USS SLATER’s progress at www.facebook.com/USS.Slater.

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The Capital District Transportation Committee (CDTC) is sponsoring a workplace challenge (Twitter #B2W518) for employers in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady Counties. Bike to Work Day is an annual event held each spring throughout the country that promotes bicycling as an option to commute to work. As Doug Haller from Bikeatoga explained, “Riding a bike to work can be more than fun, it can be exercise and stress relief, it can save money and reduce your carbon footprint, it can reduce traffic congestion and parking problems. Some of us believe that the world would be a better place if more people traveled by bicycle. It takes a little planning, but most anyone can do it.” In each county, the winning team for each of four categories will win a trophy, with trophies contributed by Bikeatoga, Albany Bicycle Coalition, and Troy Bike Rescue and made out of used bicycle parts. The four categories are: • Organization with the largest number of riders, • Small organization with the highest percent participation (20 or fewer employees), • Large organization with the highest percent participation (over 20 employees), and • Person who rode the farthest. Registration is open at www.capitalmoves.org. Standings will also be posted here by county, along with the total gallons of gas saved and calories burned (to date 33 gallons and 35,376 calories).

ST. PETER WOMEN’S GUILD MARKS 100TH ANNIVERSARY WATERVLIET - The St. Peter Women’s Guild of Watervliet, NY is celebrating 100 years of its establishment within the community. The then “Ladies’ Aid Society” of St. Peter was formed on May 4, 1914, fifteen years after the establishment of the parish in Green Island, NY, with Maritza Doumanian serving as the first chairwoman of this newlyorganized church auxilliary. Today, Sharon Foley takes the

helm leading the now “Women’s Guild” into another century of service. This May 17, 2014, the St. Peter Women’s Guild will commemorate this milestone with a dinner dance. This event will be held at the Desmond Hotel & Conference Center in Albany, NY, with a delicious and extensive buffet dinner selection followed by dancing to the big band sounds of the local Greg Nazarian ensemble. The dinner dance

tickets are $75 per person; children 12 and under only $35. The dinner begins with appetizers at 6:00 p.m. All proceeds for the evening will benefit “Mer Doon”, an organization formed in 2005 to help break the cycle of dependency for impoverished young women in Armenia. Contact the Church office to find out more about reserving your seats for the May 17th dinner dance 518274-3673.

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week Huckleberry

Hound Mix, 6 Year Old Male, Brindle/Black

Brittany

Bulldog/Terrier, Pit Bull Mix 6 Year Old Female, White Hi Friends, I’m Brittany. I was returned to the humane society because someone in my family was allergic to me. I’m a happy, older girl who loves attention. I am easy going and happy just to be with you and have you pet me. And if you look into my eyes you’ll notice that one is blue and one is brown so that makes me extra special. I’m very bossy with other dogs so if I have to share my new home they need to know that I’m in charge. Other than that, I just want to snuggle up on the couch with you.

Jupiter

Domestic Short Hair Mix, 10 Year Old Male, Grey/White Jupiter is the planet of good fortune. Jupiter was left on our steps, which will be his good fortune when you come to give him a forever home today. He is silky-soft and has very green eyes that watch your every move. He loves to talk and reaches for you. He wants to be your best companion. Happy Jupiter radiates good fortune and love wherever he goes. Your home today?
