COMMUNITY RESOURCE SETS UP FUND FOR LANSINGBURGH FIRE VICTIMS

LATHAM - Community Resource Federal Credit Union has created a fund for fire victims who escaped a deadly fire in Lansingburgh, NY on Thursday, April 3. The victims are members of the Credit Union. The fire claimed the life of Vanessa Milligan, an expectant mother. Unbelievably, Vanessa’s grandmother, who lived with Vanessa and her family, passed away the same morning after battling cancer. The Fund in Memory of Vanessa Milligan will help the surviving family members get back on their feet. They lost everything in the fire and they are homeless. 20TH ANNUAL DESSERT SPECTACULAR TROY - The Independent Living Center of the Hudson Valley is again hosting its highly anticipated annual fundraiser, the Dessert Spectacular, on May 13, 2014 from 5:30-8:30pm at Franklin Plaza in Troy. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the event and ILCHV expects between 250 and 300 people in attendance. Participants can indulge in desserts from the Capital Region’s best restaurants and bakeries while supporting the Independent Living Center of the Hudson Valley at the beautiful and elegant Franklin Plaza Ballroom in Troy.

There will be desserts for every palate. While supporters sample scrumptious sweets from the local restaurants, and listen to live music of Shadowland, there will also be a chance to participate in a silent auction with items, tickets, and services donated by businesses throughout the Capital Region and beyond; new additions this year include tickets to Disney World in Orlando and two round trip tickets on Southwest Airlines. There will also be wine pull and a raffle. Tickets to this event are $35. For students/seniors/consumers, tickets are $10.You can either mail a check to the ILCHV or pay at the door.

The employees are collecting redeemable soda, beer, and water bottles of all types at their 20 Wade Road, Latham office. They will deliver them to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and sort them on site. The employees expect to collect over 10,000 bottles this year. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society relies on bottle redemption for a large part of its operating budget.

BACKPACKS OF HOPE TO SUPPORT VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CLIFTON PARK – Members of The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County’s Women In Business Committee are reaching out to the community for help with their charitable initiative, Backpacks of Hope, which supports mothers and their children utilizing the services of Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Services of Saratoga County (DVRC). Backpacks of Hope is part of the Committee’s Baskets of Hope initiative, which has been providing women entering the Saratoga County Domestic Violence Shelter with baskets of personal care items. The backpacks and school supplies meet the needs of the children who are also affected by domestic violence.

The Women in Business Committee seeks donations of backto-school supplies such as backpacks, notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, glue sticks, etc. Donations of personal care items such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste and other toiletries are also welcomed year round. Anyone who wishes to participate in this worthy program can do so by bringing donations to The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County, located at 15 Park Avenue in Clifton Park (behind Shoppers World Plaza). They may be the product of more efficient manufacturing thanks to 3D printing, which can produce relatively inexpensive, light and efficient automobiles. One pioneer, Jim Kor, founder of the Urbee 2, a 3D-printed vehicle, made a three-wheel, two-passenger vehicle with plastic through Fused Deposition Modeling, or FDM. This involves spraying molten polymer layer by layer to build the car chassis. The entire car, which is roughly 10 feet long, took about 2,500 hours to build. What would normally be several pieces of metal and other components in a traditional car is now made from fewer and larger pieces that result in a lighter vehicle. And a car with less weight can use fuel more efficiently. Vehicles that are made through 3D printing may be the wave of the future, potentially revolutionizing automobile construction.
