w w w. c r w n e w s p a p e r s . c o m PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Thank you for favor received. J.M.H.

DEAR HEART OF Jesus In the past I have asked for many favors, this time I ask you for this very special one. Take it Dear Jesus and place it within your broken heart where your father will see it. Then in your merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise to publish it and your favor will be granted.J. M. C.

otic plants are often invasive, as they have been brought here from different ecosystems and therefore have no natural enemies to keep them under control. Though exotic plants might add significant aesthetic appeal, this may come at the expense of local wildlife and existing plants. Many mistakenly assume all non-native plants are invasive, but that’s not always true. Consult a local nursery before removing a foreign plant to determine if it’s invasive or non-invasive. If it’s non-invasive, it does not need to be removed. * Choose native plants whenever possible. Native plants have adapted to the local climate and soil, which can offer numerous eco-friendly benefits. Because they’re accustomed to native conditions, native plants do not need chemical fertilizers and require less water to thrive than their non-native counterparts, which have not adapted to the climate and soil and, as a result, need help to grow and survive. In addition, native plants won’t harm surrounding wildlife or plants. * Plant strategically. Plants can be very picky when it comes to growing conditions. If placed in poor growing conditions, plants will require chemical supplements to thrive and more water to survive. When planting, do so strategically. Find the appropriate light, moisture and soil conditions for any new plants, and then plant accordingly. Doing so requires less maintenance, saving you money while adding aesthetic appeal to your property. A local nursery can help find the right growing conditions for your plants. * Water properly. Far too often

homeowners waste water, particularly when the mercury rises. Overwatering plants leads to excess runoff, which can result in pesticides and fertilizers being carried to local streams and rivers. Excessive watering can also filter nutrients from the soil. When watering, water early in the morning, which allows plants to conserve water throughout the day. Native plants that have established themselves should not need supplemental watering. * Reduce reliance on chemical pesticides. Pesticides should

be a last resort. In addition to

their potentially harmful ef-

fects on the local ecosystem,

pesticides can be harmful to

human health as well. Often-

times, pesticides exacerbate

pest problems, killing the ben-

eficial species like earthworms

that don’t recover as quickly as

their more harmful pest counterparts. Only use pesticides if

absolutely necessary. Consult

a landscaping or gardening

professional and ask about

potential alternatives to pesticides.

There are many reasons people choose to forgo grass and opt for different ornamental elements in their yards. Cost is one factor. While grass seed is relatively inexpensive, the upkeep, including mowing, fertilizing, re-seeding, and watering, requires a significant investment of both time and money. Many homeowners choose to lay down sod to

create a beautiful lawn, an expensive option for homeowners with vast landscapes. The environment is another reason homeowners look for grass alternatives. Grass requires a lot of upkeep, much of which is not environmentally friendly. For example, maintaining a pristine lawn requires the use of a gas-powered mower and oftentimes the application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Seeking alternatives to grass can be friendly on both the wallet and the environment. Grass-Free Landscaping Alternatives For those who are ready to

* Rocks: Decorative rocks intermingled with native plants can add dimension and color to the yard. Once rocks are placed, there is little upkeep except for pulling the errant weeds. * Mulch: A less expensive alternative to rocks is mulch.

Fun facts about earthworms There are more than 2,700 different types of earthworms residing on the planet. Earthworms are often known to be workhorses in the garden, helping to aerate and fertilize the soil while filling it with nutri-

ents. Earthworms recycle materials like dead leaves, decaying animals and feces so new plant seedlings can grow and have the process begin anew. Worms have been around for 120 million years -- one of the few species of insects that have stood

All-Natural Fertilizer Options for the Garden Organic fertilizers can be just as effective as their chemical counterparts while providing health benefits chemical pesticides cannot.

Organic fertilizers are effective at strengthening the soil for both lawns and planting beds. There are a number of different materials the home gardener can try, some of which may already be around the house.

Compost: Compost is often called “black gold” because of its rich nutritional con-

tent and how it can quickly amend the quality of the soil. Compost heaps or bins can be set up in the yard so that individuals can manufacture their own compost from scraps of material used around the house. Discarded fruit peels, eggshells, leaves, and paper can be added to the compost pile. Over time, natural bacteria will break down the materials until they form an effective fertilizer. Manure: Manure remains one of the best and most

practical fertilizers out there. It’s easy to find, and any animal that eats a plant-based diet will produce manure that will be acceptable for the garden or lawn. Avoid manure from animals that eat meat as the feces may contain harmful bacteria or parasites. Not only will manure add nutrients to the soil, it will also help with moisture retention. Fish meal: Made from ground and dried fish scraps, this fertilizer is a good source of nitrogen. It can provide a boost to soil in the early spring that will last well through the growing season. * Elemental sulfur: A lawn that has turned yellow may be lacking in the right levels of sulfur. Elemental sulfur, when used sparingly, can help boost levels and return the lawn to normal. * Blood meal: This dried blood product is collected from slaughtered animals and can be another nitrogen

booster for the soil. Vegetarian gardeners may avoid its use for this reason, however. Some gardening enthusiasts say that blood meal also may be a deterrent for deer and other animals who like to nibble on garden plants. * Peat moss: Peat moss is a type of moss that grows

on the top of peat bogs. Peat moss is able to hold large quantities of water in its cells, which makes it a good soil additive to help retain moisture at the roots of plants. This is handy when dealing with very sandy soil or plants that need an increased moisture content to

grow well.

Natural fertilizers and soil ammendments can make the lawn and garden a safe place for pets, children and other animals to venture. They’re also a good idea for those looking to preserve the health of the planet.

Ergonomic tools make gardening easier Hand injuries are a common side effect of certain occupations and hobbies. Tennis elbow or wrist and even carpal tunnel syndrome are well-recognized injuries. But ergonomic tools can help alleviate injuries due to repetitive motions. The term ergonomics is derived from the Greek words “ergon,” which means work, and “nomoi,” which means natural laws. In the simplest terms, ergonomics is the study of how work is done and how to make work better. It has led to an entire subset of ergonomicsincluding products that can make work better and are safer for the body. This is done by designing items that increase utility of the item, are more comfortable to use, and reduce injury through frequent use. Ergonomic products are most readily associated with items of the workplace, including ergonomic keyboards, computer mice, office chairs, and lighting. But many industries have reevaluated operations to include tools that are ergonomic in design. Gardening is one area where ergonomics has become especially popular. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health estimates that the rate of hand injuries in the workplace is 25 hand injuries for every 10,000 full-time employees. However, hand, back and injuries of other areas of the body are also commonplace due to hobbies like gardening. Many people have considered giving up gardening due to the pain that ensues from us-

pushing walk-behind mowers. Whether these mowers were powered by gasoline, electricity or simply human power, they were the type of mower that was generally the most popular and most affordable. Individuals had different features they could consider in their mowers, including horsepower and the size of the deck. There were also mowers that could bag or mulch. Despite these features, homeowners with a particularly large back or front yard -- or both -- may have found lawn mowing to be tedious work. Those who have yards of almost an acre or more often find riding mowers to be an efficient method of mowing the lawn, and one that also does not require as much ef-

fort out in the sun. A riding mower’s cutting deck is in front, while a lawn or gardening tractor’s cutting deck is mid-mounted, which is how they differ. Lawn tractors also may be able to accept other landscaping attachments. A riding mower is more maneuverable than a tractor, particularly for landscapes that may have trees or planting beds. Cost is the one thing that may

deter some homeowners from a riding mower. While a walkbehind mower could cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars and up, riding mowers generally start at $1,000 and may be as much as $10,000, depending on the extra features, like cruise control and cup holders. However, some find that what riding mowers lack in affordability, they make up for in

convenience. Plus buying a riding mower may pay for itself in savings on landscaping services over the course of one to two seasons.

As with any lawn tool, it’s important to note that riding mowers are not toys and they should not be handled by children, nor should children be allowed to ride along while mowing.

What to look for in outdoor furniture Outdoor entertaining areas have always been popular among homeowners. The ability to entertain friends and family or simply relax by yourself is something homeowners cherish, particularly

during the warm weather seasons. Finding the right furniture to match your outdoor area, be it a deck, patio or poolside lounging area, is essential to making the most of this special area of the home.

When shopping for outdoor furniture, consider the following. * Weight: Unlike furniture inside the home, outdoor furniture will be moved around quite frequently, such as to protect it from inclement weather or changing seasons. As a result, the weight of the furniture bears importance. While you don’t want furniture that’s too lightweight and will blow away any time a strong gust of wind comes along, it’s a good idea to choose furniture that isn’t too heavy. This makes it easier to move should a storm suddenly appear and it won’t require the entire household to help move the furniture into and out of the garage when inclement weather arrives.

* Comfort: The whole idea behind an outdoor entertaining area is to have a relaxing place to spend time outside. So be sure to choose furniture that’s comfortable and can handle the elements. Metal furniture, for example, might be durable, but such furniture can also get very hot if out in the sun. * Versatility: Many homeowners enjoy changing their home’s interior decor from time to time, and it can be just as enjoyable to do the same to a home’s exterior decor. That said, look for furniture that can be accented with a variety of accessories, so you can change the look of your outdoor entertaining area easily. Protection: Protecting ex-

terior furniture from the elements should be a priority. When shopping for outdoor furniture, figure out if protective covering is available or if it will need to be custom made. The latter alternative

can be quite expensive, so you might want to consider

more generic furniture that

comes with standard protec-

tive coverings to make it more affordable.

Spray foam insulation combats mold (MS) -- If you worry about mold in your home and are trying to find solutions, you can take one simple step to help prevent it from happening. Mold is commonly found in houses that have poor wall insulation. As moisture builds up, the interior of the walls can slowly rot. This gives off

a foul smell and reduces the overall stability and quality of a property. You may need to completely strip your walls to effectively repair them. Such a repair can be expensive, but in order to prevent this situation from occurring, you can choose an alternate kind of insulation for your home. Spray foam insulation,

like Icynene, is a good choice, especially for preventing mold. Unlike other insulation, spray foam protects your walls against moisture by forming an air barrier. Prevention of mold, dust, dust mites and other common airborne irritants will improve the quality of the air in your home and ultimately the investment value of your house. More information on this topic is available online at icynene.com.

Insulation advancements are on the horizon at all times, experts say. Take a look at innovation by

Icynene, for example. Their soft, expanding spray foam insulation and air barrier material pro-

tects homeowners from the harmful outdoor environment and from energy-robbing air leakage. Icynene pioneered the spray foam technology and now leads in industry training.

Why are homeowners turning to spray foam insulation? Experts tell us that older insulation

types, such as fibreglass, will settle, compact and sag over time, decreasing their insulation prop-

erties. Spray foam insulation is energy efficient, says Icynene, and it has a high R-value due to its ability to seal and insulate at the same time. The spray foam solutions are created with water blowing agents and renewable and recycled

content, which help reduce greenhouse gas emissions to support a healthier environment. Spray

Plywood and MDF: What’s the difference? For decades plywood was the go-to inexpensive wood of choice for many home-repair projects. In fact, it was actually the first manufactured wood product available. Then the term MDF, or medium-density fiberboard, started making its way onto home-improvement shows and among do-it-yourselfers, making it a popular material in recent years. Still, many people do not know the differences between these types of wood products. Plywood is constructed by gluing several layers of thin wood veneers between two pieces of wood to create a solid sheet. Experts say there is an odd number of veneer layers, and each one is attached at a right angle to the one below to add strength to the plywood. There may be knots or irregularities in the plywood because it is made of actual slices of wood. It comes in a variety of strengths, depending on the thickness of the plywood. Thickness can vary by sheet depending on the manufacturer, so each sheet may not be consistent. MDF is formed with wood fibers or shavings mixed with glue or resin. Under heat or pressure, the MDF is made into a solid material. Because MDF is not made from slices of wood to form veneers, it will not have the traditional graining or knots associated with wood. This can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on how it is ultimately used. MDF is often easy to cut, drill and manipulate because users will not have to work around grain or knots. But users should be careful to drill pilot holes before attaching MDF because it can split. Due to machine creation, MDF is generally uniform in thickness, which makes it consistent for many uses. It is important to note that sanding and cutting of MDF can cause the release of formaldehyde. Safety goggles and a mask are a must when using this product. Plywood is more readily used for walls, ceilings and subfloors because of its strength. MDF is widely relied on for building cabinets, crafts, shelving and trimwork.

In general, anything that can fit through a tube of toilet paper is big enough to cause a child to choke. This includes hard candies, coins, peanuts, and even latex balloons. Always store these items in closed areas or in places that are beyond a child’s reach. * Make the crib a kids-only zone. Pillows, toys and comforters in a crib can cause a child to suffocate. Make the crib off-limits to these types of items, and always put children to bed on their backs. * Clip window cords. children. Clip the loops in these window cords and make sure they are always high up the window where curious kids cannot reach them. * Read all toy labels. Kids have so many toys that parents can easily overlook toys that might be safety hazards. Parents of especially young children might feel a little run down from raising their youngster and unknowingly let a few toys slip past their radar. However, it’s imperative parents read all toy labels before handing the toys over to a child. Pay specific attention to the recommended ages for each toy, as those recommendations are often made with child safety in mind. * Keep kids at an arm’s length at all times when around water. Another potential threat to kids’ safety around the house is water. Children can drown in as little as an inch of water, and it might only take a few minutes to do so. As a result, parents must be mindful and attentive whenever kids are around water. Bathtubs, toilets and, of course, pools present serious safety hazards to young kids. Whenever kids are around water, always stay within arm’s length. * Erect a fence around a pool or spa. Many communities have laws in place that require pools to be fenced in. But those laws often only mandate the yard where the pool is located be fenced in. While that might be sufficient, it can also help to erect a fence around the pool itself and keep a lock on the gate to prevent curious youngsters from making their way to the pool unsupervised.

* Turn buckets and wading pools upside down when not in use. Many parents purchase wading pools so their kids have a fun place to relax on hot days. When the kids aren’t living it up, empty these pools and turn them upside down. Do the same with any buckets you have around the house. Whenever possible, store empty buckets outside the reach of children.

* Prevent burns. Adults know to be cautious around hot water, but kids often learn the hard way. To prevent burns, keep hot water at or below 120 F.

Take Advantage Of Unprecedented Education Opportunities It used to be that people chose from relatively few, straightforward options when planning a career. You went to grade school, then perhaps began an apprenticeship at the family business. If college was an option, Mom and Dad saved up for a four year school and oӽ you went in search of a Bachelors. Sometimes, if the cost was prohibitive, a community college offered an alternative of a more aӽordable, if less comprehensive Associates Degree.

In the past I have asked for many favors, this time I ask you for this very special one. Take it Dear Jesus and place it within your broken heart where your father will see it. Today the dynamics have changed, allowing many more opportunities, a wider variety of training, and a whole host of ways to keep ever-rising costs in line. Refreshingly, our large employers are trying to help with the eӽort. Did you know that some of the most desirable jobs available at GLOBALFOUNDRIES today are accessible through a two year degree from TEC-Smart or one of the other participating community colleges? No longer is a community college a place to go when you don·t make the grade for a four year school – instead they often provide just the right amount of training for good local jobs. This isn·t to take away from some of the fantastic four year colleges and universities based in the Capital Region, but so often the perception is that our children have to spend their college years in a location far away in order to receive a marketable education. The fact is that they can obtain the necessary skills to succeed without ever leaving home, so please consider all the options when helping young adults Ӿnd their chosen path.

Of course many of our children want to explore the world and try more distant schools to enjoy the university experience. That·s understandable and they should be free to pursue their dreams. However, it·s worth explaining that employment opportunities after college are often far better right here at home than they are elsewhere at present.

Presentation on French Presence in NY

ALBANY – Discover the secret, rich, and compelling French history of New York State. Local Professor Eloise A. Brière will present the unique characteristics of the French presence in New York and the Capital District at a lecture at the Albany Institute of History & Art on Sunday, April 29 at 2pm. A book signing of her book, J’aime New York, will follow the lecture. This talk is free of charge with museum admission. Despite the number of French place names scattered across the state- from Raquette Lake to Lake Bonaparte- New York’s French history is far less well-known than its English and Dutch heritage. Brière’s book, J’aime New York strives to shed light on these roots by sharing information on the French who have explored, settled, and visited NYS. Following the discussion, Brière will be available to answer questions and to sign copies of her book, which will be available for sale at the Museum Shop. The book signing session is free and open to the public. (P)

Host An Exchange Student

Paddle for Hope COHOES – Celebrating our 5th anniversary season, Hope in the Boat is a team of breast cancer survivors who paddle a dragon boat for recreation, fitness and to raise awareness of the quality of life during and after cancer treatment. By paddling together, our mission is to promote wellness, and provide hope and partnership to those on the breast cancer journey. We accomplish this through the ancient sport of dragon boating, which is becoming one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and particularly in the US. Team members practice paddling once or twice weekly in Cohoes on the Hudson River where the boat is docked from mid-May until Mid-September. Hope in the Boat is looking for breast cancer survivors who would like to join this unique paddling team. An orientation program is scheduled for Wednesday, May 2 at 6pm in Latham. If you are interested in attending the orientation, please visit our website at www.HopeintheBoat. org and/or call Lu Allegretti-Freeman at 765-2307 or Barbara Neiman at 477-9580. (A)
