The shredding will be done on site. There is no cost for shredding, however there is a 3 box or bag limit and residents are asked to bring at least one canned good for donation to a local food pantry for each box or bag of documents they bring in to be shredded. The topic of discussion will be, “Understanding the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education Part 200, Students with Disabilities, and Part 201”. This training will take those in attendance through the NYS Special Education Regulations step by step. Parents will learn the role they play on the CSE, learn the chain of command for the CSE, learn how to request information about their child’s IEP and understand how to communicate with their child’s teachers & administrators. After this seminar, parents will have more knowledge about the educational laws to advocate for their child/children. This training will be presented by Tina Beauparlant from Parent to Parent of New York State. 2ND ANNUAL MIRACLE LEAGUE POKER RUN-THE MIRACLE RIDE CAPITAL DISTRICT - The Capital Region Miracle League will hold its 2nd Annual Poker Run fundraiser on Sat May 17, 2014.

SCHAGHTICOKE - Celebrating its 195th year, The Schaghticoke Fair is very excited to announce the 2014 fair theme as Harvest Your Dreams. The fair will be introducing Harvest Your Dreams into buildings, exhibits, fair entries, and contests during the week of the fair. Lauren Madigan, a student at Hoosic Valley High School was the winner of last year’s “Who’s Your Souper Hero?” theme design contest. The contest is open to all currently enrolled high school and college students as well as adults throughout the local area. The selected design will be used on the cover of the 2014 fair brochure, the annual fair t-shirt and for additional marketing purposes. Each student or adult that submits a design entry will receive a one day fair pass to the 2014 Schaghticoke Fair. In addition to having the winner’s work published, the winner will also receive a one day fair pass with one unlimited ride ticket, a 2014 Harvest Your Dreams t-shirt, a certificate of achievement presented during the week of the fair and will also become an honorary judge for future themed design contests. BIKE TO WORK DAY WORKPLACE CHALLENGE MAY 16, 2014 CAPITAL DISTRICT - The Capital District Transportation Committee (CDTC) is sponsoring a workplace challenge (Twitter #B2W518) for employers in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady Counties. Bike to Work Day is an annual event held each spring throughout the country that promotes bicycling as an option to commute to work. As Doug Haller from Bikeatoga explained, “Riding a bike to work can be more than fun, it can be exercise and stress relief, it can save money and reduce your carbon footprint, it can reduce traffic congestion and parking problems. Some of us believe that the world would be a better place if more people traveled by bicycle. It takes a little planning, but most anyone can do it.” In each county, the winning team for each of four categories will win a trophy, with trophies contributed by Bikeatoga, Albany Bicycle Coalition, and Troy Bike Rescue and made out of used bicycle parts. The four categories are: • Organization with the largest number of riders, • Small organization with the highest percent participation (20 or fewer employees), • Large organization with the highest percent participation (over 20 employees), and • Person who rode the farthest. Registration is open at www.capitalmoves.org. Standings will also be posted here by county, along with the total gallons of gas saved and calories burned (to date 33 gallons and 35,376 calories).

INFORMATION GUIDE FOR VOTERS SARATOGA CO. - The League of Women Voters of Saratoga County has produced an information guide for voters for the School District Elections. Voters can access it by going to the League website, www.lwvsaratoga. org and either enter an address to see all the items on one’s personal ballot for the election or select from the list of School District elections. In addition, information is provided for each district such as hours the polls are open, whether absentee ballots are available, and if registration is required to vote. Most of the candidates in the county who are seeking election where there are contested positions agreed to participate in the On-line Guide this year, providing voters with biographical information, answers to questions posed

by LWV Saratoga County. All of this information is part of the League of Women Voters of the US voter information website, www.vote411.org which is a valuable resource for all voters for all elections.

Information can be found here on absentee voting, information about voting machines, military and overseas voting, assistance for voters with disabilities, voting hours, and ID needed for voting, as well as links to the NY State Board of Elections.

BALLSTON SPA - The 45th annual GottaGetGon Folk Music Festival will be held Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25, 2014, at the Saratoga County Fairgrounds in Ballston Spa. BALLSTON SPA – The celebration that is midway to St. Patrick’s Day -- the Irish 2000 Music and Arts Festival -- takes over the Saratoga County Fairgrounds on Sept. 12 and 13 with new groups and old favorites. The festival features more than 25 performers and two days of all things Irish. It opens at 5 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, with performances by Kilrush, Scythian, Clan na Gael and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, Irish 2000 opens at 10 a.m. and continues until midnight, with three stages of non-stop music and a fourth stage where Irish dance takes the center. FERTILIZING FOR BEGINNERS Fertilizing a lawn is a springtime tradition for many homeowners. Winter can take its toll on a lawn, but fertilizer can go a long way toward helping a lawn recover from harsh weather.

While lawn-and-garden enthusiasts might know the ins and outs of fertilizing a lawn, novices might need a little help as they look to restore their lawns. * Find out what your lawn needs. Even novice green thumbers likely know that overfertilization can harm a lawn, and that’s a big reason many homeowners approach fertilizing their lawn with some trepidation.

A lush lawn adds to the curb appeal of a home, while a lawn that’s patchy or appears to be poorly taken care of can lower property value. Before fertilizing a lawn, homeowners should determine the needs of their lawns. A soil test can determine if the lawn has any nutrient deficiencies. * Don’t overdo it with nitrogen. Fertilizing with too much nitrogen is a common mistake, as too much nitrogen can be harmful, decreasing root growth and increasing a lawn’s susceptibility to disease. A slow-release fertilizer may be an option, as such fertilizers break down nutrients over a longer period of time, which also allows homeowners to extend the intervals between fertilizing sessions. But a lawn can get nitrogen from other sources as well. Such sources include grass clippings or raked leaves left on the lawn after being shredded by a mulching mower. * Consider using granules instead of spray. Spraying a lawn with fertilizer might seem like the easiest and quickest way to fertilize, but spraying is typically best left to the professionals. That’s because novices often struggle to evenly apply the fertilizer when spraying, and many do not account for the wind when spraying fertilizer. A traditional spreader that fertilizes a lawn with granules makes it easier for nonprofessionals to apply the fertilizer accurately and evenly. Before fertilizing with granules, read the package to determine if you need to water the lawn before application, as some fertilizers are only effective when applied to a lawn after it has been watered. Also, be sure to fill the spreader on asphalt instead of the lawn. Chances are you’re going to spill granules when filling the spreader, and such spills can be harmful to the lawn. * Plan to fertilize several times. Some homeowners only fertilize twice a year, once in the spring and then once again in the fall. But fertilizer should be applied multiple times throughout the year, beginning in the early spring. The first time to fertilize is when the soil temperature reaches roughly 55 F, which is often evident because grass typically starts to grow again when the soil reaches that temperature. Many flowers compete with one another to attract butterflies, birds and bees for pollination, but at least two species of flowering plants have enhanced their ability to attract insects in unique ways. The titan arum (Amorphophallus titanium) is native to western Sumatra, where it grows in openings in rainforests. It is the largest unbranched flower in the world and can reach up to 15 feet tall. But this alone is not what makes the titan arum so special. It is unwise to step in close to get a whiff of this enormous bloom, as the plant gives off a rancid odor reminiscent of rotting meat. It is sometimes known as the carrion plant or the corpse plant for this reason. The plant has created this scent to attract flies for pollination. The rafflesia, which is native to southeastern Asia as well, is another plant that produces a rotting aroma to attract insects. CLIFTON PARK - The American Cancer Society is seeking cancer survivors to participate in 2014 Relay For Life. The Shenendehowa Community 2014 Relay For Life will be held at the Shenedehowa High School Track in Clifton Park from Friday, June 13th, 7pm to Saturday June 14th, 7am. Relay For Life is a Community gathering to participate in the fight against cancer, through fundraising, education, awareness of cancer prevention, treatment and patient support. All cancer survivors and caregivers are honored guest as the Relay starts with a “Survivors Lap” to celebrate the courage that the survivors and their families sustain in their livers. After the sun sets, “The Remember Ceremony” with hundreds of luminaria lights the track to remember those we lost to cancer and honor those fighting cancer and those who have won.

At 11pm is the “Fight Back Ceremony. All three ceremonies are beautiful and very moving. There will be various activities planned for the entire night. Registration for survivors, caregivers and the public will begin at 6pm. Additionally, the recipient of the gifted car will fill out paperwork, which includes tax information. Again, depending on where you live, there will be rules about tax exemptions or taxes that must be paid on the vehicle. Keep in mind that whoever is doing the gifting may not be able to use the car as a tax write-off. The United States Internal Revenue Service notes that you cannot deduct the value of gifts you make other than those given to registered charitable organizations.
