American Legion Post 1450 Donates to Local Charities

HALFMOON – American Legion Mohawk Post 1450 Commander Jim Valenti announced that the Post made its annual Christmas donations of over $12,000 to local charities and non-profit organizations in December, 2012. Contributions totaling over $8000 were made to local family and youth oriented organizations including The Saratoga Center for the Family, Regional Food Bank, CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Community Hospice, Double H Ranch, and Shenendehowa Helping Hands Food Pantry. Additionally, the post helped support our veterans by donating to Stratton V.A. Hospital’s Adaptive Sports Program and Veteran’s Holiday Committee, The National Honor Guard, and the Homeless Men’s and Women’s Veterans Facilities in Ballston Spa. The donations were made possible through membership support and the Post’s Monday Night Bingo and other fundraising activities. They are in addition to ongoing contributions made throughout the year in support of the community. The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. Post 1450 is one of the largest in membership in New York State. For information on joining please call the post at 371-4463. (P)

Convenience Carts Now Available at Library CLIFTON PARK – The Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library now has convenience carts for patrons, due to a thoughtful gesture by Kathy Kohler. She wanted to remember a dear friend who was an avid reader and library user who recently passed away from bone cancer. This friend had to use a cane but wanted to make her trips productive and would take many items to tide herself over until her next visit. It was getting difficult to juggle all the materials and stay steady on her feet. Kohler felt there must be others in this situation and made a donation to the Library in Carol Raphael’s name to purchase one cart. The Friends of the Library liked the idea so much they purchased three more. The carts can be found just beyond the Welcome Desk on the way to the Returns window. (P)

Wagging their Tails for Tales: Therapy Dog Program CLIFTON PARK – Reading to Therapy Dogs will be held Thursday, January 10 from 4-5pm at the Clifton Park Halfmoon Public Library, upstairs in the Children’s Library. Children can read to the therapy dogs for 15-minutes, in a comfortable, nonjudgmental environment. Children build confidence from the experience and are encouraged to continue with their reading at home. Limited appointments are available, call the Youth Services Department at 371-8622. The next sessions will be January 22 and January 27. (P)

CLIFTON PARK – The Clifton Park-Halfmoon Library will host a Book Club for kids in grades 6, 7, and 8, called Everybody Readz. The club will meet on the first Monday of the month, our next meeting is on January 7 at 4:30pm. Everybody Readz will discuss books and authors, explore the Internet to see what fun sites there are, and e-mail the authors questions. The library is located at 475 Moe Road in Clifton Park; 3718622. (P)

Lincoln’s Secret

CLIFTON PARK – Local author Edward Peck will talk about his new book, Lincoln’s Secret at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library on Friday, January 4. The Friday Morning-FreeFor-All begins at 10:30am. In this dramatic, first-of-its-kind Civil War novel, shocking new information about the nation’s president is uncovered that throws the North’s entire military effort into doubt, and, indeed, challenges Abraham Lincoln’s legal right even to hold office. Mr Peck will also discuss the genre of counterfactual history and its influence on his book. All are welcome to this drop-in program; no registration required. Light refreshments are served. For more information, please call the Library at 371-8622. (P)

Baskets of Hope

CLIFTON PARK – Members of The Chamber of Southern Saratoga’s Women In Business Committee are reaching out to the community for help with their charitable initiative, Baskets of Hope, which supports the daily needs of Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Services of Saratoga County (DVRC). The Committee seeks donations of women’s personal care items such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. Donated items are assembled into gift bags by committee members and given to victims entering the shelter with the hope that the recipient will take comfort in knowing there are people in their own community who care and want to help. Baskets of Hope, an ongoing program of the Women in Business Committee, is now in its seventh year thanks to the support of generous Chamber and community members. Anyone who wishes to participate in this worthy program can do so by bringing donations to The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County Office at 15 Park Avenue, Clifton Park (behind the Shoppers World Plaza) during regular business hours, Mon.-Fri., 8:30am-5pm. Questions about the Baskets of Hope or the Women in Business Committee should be directed to Chamber Member Services Manager Liz Roggenbuck at 371-7748 x108 or by email at liz@southernsaratoga.org (A)

I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. How to Get a Job You Love in the New Year (StatePoint) The New Year is the perfect time to evaluate your career and take control of your professional life. And doing so may be easier than you think in today’s economy, where one-third of the American workforce is now comprised of freelancers. Experts say self-employed, independent workers have gone mainstream and are here to stay. “From computer programmers and nannies to opera singers and anesthesiologists, nearly every industry is now employing freelancers,” says Sara Horowitz, founder of the Freelancers Union and author of the new handbook, “The Freelancer’s Bible.” “The time’s long past for viewing freelancing as a euphemism for slackers or the unemployed.” While freelancing does have challenges, Horowitz contends that with some planning and research, a freelancer can survive and thrive in the new economy. “Even those with stable full-time jobs should consider the benefits of freelance work -- from the freedom to pursue multiple professional paths at once, to the ability to take time off without permission,” says Horowitz. To help Horowitz founded the Freelancer’s Union to empower this growing independent sector with solutions for affordable health care and retirement planning. Whether you’re an experienced independent worker, or just getting started, there are several things that can help you become a more nimble, flexible and successful freelancer: • Tell everyone: Sometimes gigs drop in your lap, but mostly they come from connecting and sharing with others. Remember that everything is a marketing opportunity. By freelancing, you can take control of your career and schedule. Don’t be shy about networking. People will want to help. Give them what they need to spread the word. Just be careful to be professional, not pushy. • Stay positive: In many ways, having multiple sources of income and multiple money-making skills is less risky than putting all your eggs in an employer’s basket. So don’t think of freelancing as volatile and risky, so much as flexible and opportunity-rich. • Balance risks and rewards: Weigh how much time and energy you should invest in various projects and be open to changing the mix depending on the work market and your income needs. • Negotiate: Negotiating a contract isn’t about displaying bravado. It’s about knowing your power relationship with the client. Get informed by learning your industry’s deal norms, the market’s needs and your market value. Not happy with where you stand? Get training, find markets with bigger budgets or gain more experiences until you can be rewarded with higher pay.

Things To Do Before Buying A Used Car Used cars can be quite a bargain. Whether purchased from a dealer, private citizen or even a family member, a used or preowned vehicle can prove just as reliable as a new vehicle but at a fraction of the cost. While plenty of people have had good experiences purchasing a used vehicle, consumers know that a used car is never a sure bet. However, shoppers can employ the following tips to learn as much about a used vehicle as possible before any money exchanges hands. * Ask for a vehicle history report. A vehicle history report can show potential buyers how many owners a vehicle has had as well as the vehicle’s accident history. A vehicle with several previous owners and an extensive accident history is one many consumers would prefer to avoid. Consider it a red flag if a seller, be it a dealership or private seller, does not want to share the vehicle history report. For a nominal fee, the Department of Justice’s National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (www.nmvtis.org) provides information about a vehicle’s title, its odometer data and certain aspects of its accident history. * Test drive the car under as many conditions as possible. When test driving a used car, try to drive it in as many conditions as possible. Test the vehicle on hills, in stop-and-go traffic and test how the vehicle responds to accelerated speeds on the freeway. * Have the vehicle inspected by your own mechanic. Once the vehicle changes ownership, it will need to pass inspection before you can legally drive it. However, many used cars are purchased as-is, meaning you won’t be protected if the vehicle fails inspection after you have paid for the car. As a result, it’s important to have the vehicle inspected by your own mechanic before any money changes hands. The mechanic can point out any issues with the vehicle and give his recommendation as to whether it’s worth buying. * Research the model of vehicle. Before buying a used vehicle, it also helps to research the specific model. Some models have better reputations for longevity than others. Such research won’t necessarily be easy, but auto-related consumer magazines typically produce stories examining the frequency of repair and maintenance costs with specific models. Buying a used car requires a leap of faith, but a few tricks of the trade can make consumers much more confident that they will find the right vehicle.

WWW.LATHAMFORD.COM Moving Ahead As A Community in 2013 The year 2012 ended on a very troubling note. Emotions and tensions ran high as an unprecedented series of tragedies tore at our consciences and threatened the very security of our families. As a parent and someone who is passionately involved in our community I struggled mightily to personally come to grips with both local and national events. Thankfully the holidays have a way of helping us reflect on the past, refocus our priorities and prepare for the future. Pete Bardunias, With the new year upon us, The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County is embarking on a new initiative in President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County 2013 which will encourage citizens and businesses to work together. It’s called the Community Development Program, or volunteerism with an economic development purpose, to improve our quality of life while adding entrepreneurial opportunities, and sustainable preservation of our historic landmarks. Patterned after the successful work done by the Chamber and its partners at Historic Lock 19 in Vischer Ferry, planned projects will include repairs and historical research at the Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa in conjunction with the Ballston Spa Central School District, and a similar effort at the old Mechanicville train station, in support of efforts already underway by city leadership and the Mechanicville Chamber of Commerce. In Waterford and Charlton, business meetings will develop the agenda for the next round of community development projects in 2014. These exciting developments mark a major departure from the traditional networking role of a Chamber. We’ll still get a chance to network, but in a fun, productive way while getting our hands dirty, along with our children, friends, neighbors and colleagues. We’ll learn more about each other and our communities while making a tangible difference right in our own backyard. To volunteer for the Community Development Program, please call the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County at 518-371-7748 or email me at pete@southernsaratoga.org
