Volunteers Needed For Saratoga County Office for the Aging Home Delivered Meals Program

SARATOGA COUNTY - The Saratoga County Office for the Aging is in immediate NEED of volunteers to help deliver meals to homebound seniors in the Galway and Burnt Hills/ Charlton area. This program helps many seniors remain independent in their own homes. Nutritious meals are prepared, packed and ready for transport. Delivery takes about an hour.

Curtis Lumber To Host 8th Annual Petapalooza Pet Adoption Day!

SARATOGA COUNTY - Curtis Lumber will host their 8th annual pet adoption day and fair on Saturday, June 17, 2017 across select retail stores located throughout New York State and Vermont.

The event is called “Curtis Lumber PetAPalooza.” Each store will host multiple pet adoptions/rescue groups. Many adoption rates will also be lowered for the day!

Hundreds of animals from over 80 (to date) shelters and rescue groups will be available for adoption including cats, dogs, rabbits and birds. There will also be pet service providers in attendance such as local veterinarians, groomers, pet sitters, photographers and trainers offering valuable discounts off their services.

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Capital District Humane Association, Inc. (CDHA.NET) is an all-volunteer, no-kill animal rescue group that has been saving animals of all kinds throughout the capital region and beyond since 1988. Our goal is to place each animal in our program in a wonderful home where it will be treated like a valued member of the family.

We re-home dogs with no charge for surrender. Since CDHA is a rescue group and doesn’t have a facility of its own, all it’s dogs are in foster homes and dogs are showcased at pet adoption clinics held three times each month. Date for the 9th Annual Taste of Malta Announced

MALTA - The Malta Business & Professional Association announces their 9th Annual Taste of Malta on Tuesday, July 19, 2017, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Hudson Valley Community College’s TECSMART, 345 Hermes Rd., Malta.

Each year, cuisine from local Malta and surrounding area restaurants is offered for tasting and sampling. Past events have featured menu items and specialties from Panza’s Restaurant, Campagna Restaurant, Lake Ridge, NaNola, Wolf Hollow Brewing Company, Lily and the Rose Catering and many more.

Event Chairwoman, Karen McGowan, said “We are excited to be planning this year’s Taste of Malta event again! We never know who will be joining us each year with regards to vendors or attendees. Last year we saw another jump in families enjoying the evening out with us. Each year, we try to add something new and this year we’re adding an Adirondack Tree to our raffle area. This activity ensures that everyone who participates in this particular activity will walk away with something! Could be a certificate to an area restaurant, to the movies, to a spa…you never know what great items we’ll have this year! Year after year, we continue to be amazed by the community support from both businesses and residents and I’m sure this year will not disappoint in that area!”

Proceeds from the event support the Ballston Spa Partnership for Innovation in Education Fund. Through business and individual sponsorships and donations, entrance fees to the event, and funds raised from raffles held at the event, we have been able to give over $13,000 to the fund which supports several Ballston Spa Central School District’s most innovative initiatives, including the Clean Technologies & Sustainable Industries Early College in High School (Clean Tech ECHS) held at the HVCC’s TEC-SMART facility in Malta.

Erie Canal Program at Round Lake’s Malta Branch Library MALTA - Celebrate the Bicentennial of the start of the Erie Canal with the historical program: Low Bridge: The Erie Canal in Saratoga County presented by Clifton Park Town Historian John Scherer on Thursday, June 22 at 6:30pm at the Round Lake’s Malta Branch Library located in the Malta Community Center, 1 Bayberry Drive in Malta. When the Erie Canal was completed in 1825 it was a milestone in engineering and was considered to be the eighth wonder of the world! Thirteen miles of the canal went through southern Saratoga County. CAPITAL DISTRICT - Books for Troops has now reopened its collection site at Halfmoon Town Hall on route 236 in Halfmoon from 9-4 daily. The bin is inside on the left. Once more we thank you for your generous donation of books. However, our biggest needs right now are for DVDs, Books on Tape, and puzzle books. They help the troops on the long nights of night watches or on those many sleepless nights. Book drives for these items would be welcome.

Books for Troops has continually asked for people who could mail our books to our Post Office two miles away and occasionally to other places. You must be strong enough to lift heavy boxes of books. We mail about once every two weeks and it takes less than two hours. We still have no volunteers. Please contact ekeegan3@nycap.rr.com. Saratoga County Veterans Peer Connection Program

SARATOGA COUNTY - The Saratoga County Veterans Peer Connection falls under the New York State PFC Joseph Dwyer Program. The aim is to assist Veterans by pairing them with another Veteran who has had similar life experiences, in order to provide for a meaningful relationship. The program pairs established Veterans with returning Veterans who are experiencing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other re-acclimation challenges. Personalized and informal, these pairings yield understanding and rapport intended to ease the transition from combat to civilian life. The trained mentors have access to local and county resources as well as a clear understanding of state and national opportunities. While the main goal is to provide each Veteran with a meaningful and dependable relationship, other types of assistance may include: job hunting, academic pursuits, life skills, guidance, peer support, encouragement, and understanding. We also have an active mentoring program to Veterans currently in the Saratoga County Jail; have a Vets and Pets program aimed at connecting Veterans with companion animals in conjunction with the Saratoga County Animal Shelter. Currently, Veterans are meeting casually at Saratoga Coffee Traders on Broadway in Saratoga Springs, Tuesday evenings from 6-8 pm for coffee and conversation. All Veterans are welcome. A Journey With Lyme

This is the secone part of a two part series about Lyme disease

by Emily Marcason-Tolmie Lyme disease does not discriminate. It doesn’t care if you are rich or poor; a mother or a father; young or old. It is a vicious, relentless disease that may take hold and never let go. A person may test positive for Lyme and never experience a symptom of it. Another person may test positive for Lyme and struggle the rest of his life to survive. Then there are others that suffer silently with the disease for years unknowingly, being misdiagnosed with incorrect ailments by doctor after doctor. Eric Rutulante of Saugerties, NY, and Lucy Crotty of Saratoga Springs, NY, are two people living every day with Lyme disease. Their stories, however, are very different.

Eric Rutulante is not shy about sharing his every day struggles with Lyme. This past Easter, for example, Rutulante was too ill to even get his mother a card. He asked her to buy a box of chocolates for herself as a gift from him, although he couldn’t pay her back for it. “I was too sick to get up to eat or spend time with my mom on the holiday,” he wrote in an email. “I am 8 years into this…I spend almost my entire time in bed...My head feels like it’s filled with Jell-O a lot, and all the time I feel like I am moving in Jell-O or water.”

Rutulante, blogger of Lymebites.com, believes he has suffered from Lyme disease for most of his life, starting at around age 5. Plagued with various ailments over the years, Rutulante was initially diagnosed with Multiple Scoliosis (MS) in his mid-thirties. However, it was a physician’s assistant that overheard Rutulante’s symptoms and encouraged him to be tested for Lyme. At the age of 36, Rutulante finally received an accurate diagnosis. But, the Lyme disease diagnosis was just the beginning and fighting the disease is only half the battle.

Rutulante reflects that for the past 7 years his medical expenses have become the burden of his family. He has lived with his mother since his diagnosis. “My mother is the greatest for all she has done for me, and does for me now,” he wrote. He appreciates that he never feels judged by her, even at his darkest moments of suffering.

After 8 years of learning to live with the disease, he is finally starting to look towards the future. “I am passionate because I am angry at the great life I had built and career for myself, to living in my mom’s family room, depending on her for last 8 years for everything…,” he wrote. When he is well enough he hopes to one day be an advocate for all those people fighting Lyme disease and too sick to fight for themselves. “I will do anything to get the word out there to stop people from having to go through this,” he wrote. “I want this to be last generation to suffer from tick diseases.”

Lucy Crotty and her family relocated to Saratoga Springs after living in the Pacific Northwest for many years. In early October of 2008, she went to a new patient appointment with a local doctor. “Ironically, I remember telling the doctor that I am never sick and that she would probably only be seeing me once a year for a physical,” Crotty said. It was only a few days after that appointment that Crotty found herself sitting in a meeting at work on a Friday afternoon feeling herself deteriorate by the minute. “That Friday morning I woke up feeling like I was coming down with something but by Friday afternoon I felt like I was hit by a truck. It hit me that fast,” she said.

For Crotty, the symptoms included what she thought to be a bad case of the flu. She had a high fever, fatigue and throbbing headaches. The common rash associated with Lyme disease eventually appeared on her back, but not until many weeks after her symptoms flared. The whole weekend she never once thought of Lyme disease as being a possibility. “I kept thinking about a work trip that I was supposed to take that Monday and being really upset that I might have to cancel it.” She did cancel that trip. Instead, on Monday morning she found herself back in the doctor’s office that she vowed she rarely needed.

“I am very lucky that my doctor was proactive,” Crotty said. “She was really thorough and diligent. She brought in another doctor for a second opinion.” In retrospect she is most appreciative that her doctor didn’t brush her symptoms off or ask Crotty to give it a few days. “I received the attention I needed when I needed it the most. I received the antibiotics I needed. I think this swift movement is why I got better.”

Feeling better for Crotty was not instant, however, as is sometimes the misconception when antibiotics are introduced to the treatment plan. She remembers her recovery to be slow and gradual. She also remembers the immense fatigue and radiating joint pain, which started in her knees, moved up to hips and back and eventually caused short-term paralysis in her jaw. She recalls the headaches being brutal.

“All I did during those six weeks was sleep, eat popsicles and drink sips of water. I had no desire to do anything,” she said.

Crotty is an avid hiker. She enjoys the beauty of nature and is not letting Lyme stop her from doing what she loves. “I’m not going to let these ticks stop me,” she said. Crotty, in remission from the disease, remains diligent about checking herself daily for ticks and uses a bug and tick repellent out on the trails.

However, she notes that the recent news about the rise of another tick induced virus, Powassan (POW) is making her nervous because it has no antibiotic. “It is scary but I’m just trying to stay informed,” she said.

“I will keep doing what I am doing now to protect myself.”

What is unsettling for Crotty is not really knowing the source of her Lyme. She never found a tick on herself around the time of her illness in 2008. She did spend some time in Connecticut, the epicenter of Lyme disease, in the weeks prior to her symptoms flaring up. Crotty said she doesn’t remember Lyme being talked about then as much as it is now. “It wasn’t really a part of the everyday conversation in 2008,” she said. “I’m glad we are talking about Lyme so much more now.”

Saratoga National Historical Park Announces 100 Mile Challenge

STILLWATER - With the National Park Service Centennial celebration now over, Saratoga National Historical Park is looking forward to the next 100 years of stewardship and encourages you to continue to “Find Your Park!” Get to know your local national park by joining the 100 Mile Challenge – get on the bike or hike the trails and see if you can accumulate 100 miles at the battlefield between May 1 and October 31, 2017. Through this challenge people can enjoy the rich natural and cultural heritage of this local site as they explore their national park, plus get some exercise too!

Anyone can take part in this challenge, from beginners to advanced hikers and cyclists, young and old, human and canine. Pets are great companions for enjoying the outdoors - to complete this challenge, each participating pet must hike 100 miles in the park with their human companion, following park pet policies.

Each participant must register for the challenge. To register, email your name (and your pet) and email address to: SARA_info@nps.gov. To register more than one person, please specify number of participants and their names in the email. The park will periodically send email messages with updates about this challenge, including news about upcoming hiking and biking events in the park, hiking and biking tips, and motivational thoughts. Your email address will not be shared with others.

Each participant that completes 100 miles between May 1 and October 31, 2017 will receive an award for their achievement, but the real awards you’ll get for completing this challenge are the new experiences and memories you’ll gain while on these adventures in your local national park.

Hopefully this challenge will inspire you to get out and explore more national parks; after all there are more than 400 throughout the country!

CROSSWORD It seems that nothing could be simpler than watering your garden, but I’m always amazed that so many gardeners, even experienced gardeners, continue to make the rookie mistake of spraying their plants with water. Spraying your gardens with water can turn even a great growing season into a struggle. Here’s why.

1. Spraying chills the leaves, shocking the plant. On a hot day we might think that our tomato plants would enjoy a cooling spray from the hose. Actually, tomatoes love their leaves to be hot. On a 90° summer day, the leaves of the tomato are evaporating moisture. The tomato (or any of our garden plants) replaces that moisture by drawing it up through its roots. Along with that moisture comes the nutrients the plant needs to grow, flower and produce fruit. When the leaves get hit with that 50°F water from the hose, it shocks the plant and it takes a couple of days to recover. Every time you chill your tomato by spraying it with water, you’re cheating yourself out of at least couple of days of growing. Our season is short enough without being cheated by spray watering.

2. Spraying our plants with water creates a perfect environment for fungal diseases to incubate and thrive.

Folks are always worried about late blight, powdery mildew and a host of other diseases. But they’ll continue to water their vegetable garden with a lawn sprinkler.

Plants with dry leaves are always going to be healthier.

Wet leaves are an invitation to the spores of fungal diseases.

3. Spraying our plants with water washes the pollen out of the flowers. Once that happens, the plant will abort that now-useless flower. In the case of flowering ornamental plants, this means that a flower that could have lasted several days will now turn to mush by the next morning.

In the vegetable garden, spraying the pollen out of the flowers means that no fruit will form until a new flower opens and gets pollinated. All the effort we put into our vegetable gardens is undermined when we water with a lawn sprinkler or spray then with water from a hose.

4. Spray watering wastes water. Plants absorb water through their roots and that is where the water should be directed. Water sprayed on your garden evaporates into the air, doing little good for your plants and a great deal of damage.

A soaker hose waters the soil, not the leaves.

So, how do we water the gardens without wetting the plants? Use a watering wand. A watering wand allows you to direct the water to the soil at the base of each plant so the roots can be soaked while wetting the foliage as little as possible. The wand gets the water where it’s most needed without wasting any.

If you haven’t the time or patience for wand watering, you can use oozing soaker hoses so all you have to do is hook up your hose and walk away. If you are using several soaker hoses in different beds, you may want to invest in snap connectors and an inexpensive water timer/shut off so you can let it run while you leave for work. Water your gardens isn’t difficult but make sure that it helps rather than harms your plants. Thanks for the read

Many parents would never intentionally put their youngsters in harm’s way, but leaving a child in an unattended vehicle — even if it’s just for a few minutes — can be incredibly dangerous.

Since 1998, 611 children have died from hyperthermia, or heat stroke, which resulted from the kids having been left in hot cars.

Consumer Reports notes that more than 50 percent of those deaths were children under the age of 2.

Heat is not the only danger children face when left in cars. Cold cars can be equal-

ly dangerous. Young children cannot regulate their body temperature very well.

The University of Rochester Medical Center says babies can’t adjust to temperature changes as well as adults, and infants can lose heat rapidly, nearly four times faster than adults. Healthy newborns may not be able to keep their bodies warm if the environment around them is too cold. On cold, snowy days, babies may

need a constant flow of heat in the car to remain comfortable.

Weather and temperature are not the only dangers kids face when left alone in cars.

Strangulation from safety belts, entrapment in doors and windows and falls from open windows also may occur when kids are left in cars unsupervised. Some dexterous children may climb into the driver’s seat and engage the gear shift, causing the

vehicle to move. Abduction is another potential danger, as unattended children in cars are potential targets for kidnappers.

Never leave a child unattended in a car. Parents prone to forgetfulness can put a stuffed animal on the front seat to serve as a reminder that they have kids in tow or place a purse or wallet on the backseat so they must look in the back of the car before exiting their vehicles.

Convertibles Maintain Their Popularity For many people, warm weather road trips are most enjoyable when taking to the road in a convertible.

Fans of convertibles find few things can compare to the wind blowing in their hair and the sun shining on their faces on a beautiful day.

The concept of a convertible is nothing new. In fact, convertibles can be traced to some of the earliest vehicles, which were built without tops and based on the design of horse and carriages. The first closed vehicle was manufactured in 1910, and the first retractable hardtop vehicle system was unveiled in 1922. People are attracted to convertibles for many reasons.

Appearance and the feeling of connection to the outdoors are two of the most popular reasons for driving convertibles. However, the same attributes that draw some people to convertibles may deter others. Many assumptions and criticisms about convertible cars are exaggerated and could incorrectly paint these vehicles in a negative light.

Functionality is one com-

mon knock on convertibles.

Convertibles certainly are at their best during warm weather, but that doesn’t mean they cannot be driven in different seasons. Many modern convertibles feature cabins that are well insulated. With the top up, a person can feel just as comfortable as in other vehicles.

Safety is another concern with regard to convertibles, but modern technology has done much to make convertibles safer. While there

is the rare possibility in a rollover incident that convertibles could land on the open top, maintaining the speed limit and driving defensively can reduce the risk of accident. Many modern convertibles are modeled on coupes or hatchbacks that would ordinarily have a static roof. To compensate for the roof removal, reinforcements to the pillars and the chassis, as well as rollover bars or other safety features in handling

and stability to drastically reduce rolling risk, are included.

Convertibles can be enjoyed regardless of where drivers live. According to Forbes magazine, although 23 percent of convertibles are owned by those in California or Florida, the top five markets in the United States also include colder cities like New York and Chicago.

Convertibles have been fea-

tured in movies and helped to shape the history of automobiles. And contrary to popular belief, convertibles are not exclusive to drivers in warm climates.
