MENTORS NEEDED FOR LOCAL NON-PROFIT

CAPITAL REGION – Spring is coming and with it a time to renew, re-group, and re-prioritize. What better way than to begin a new volunteer opportunity! I am I can, a mentoring program for girls in grades 9-12, is seeking professional women to work with new students to the program. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student on a one-to-one basis, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance in achieving their post-graduation goals. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Shenendehowa, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please visit our website at www.iamicanachieve.org or contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 688-3010 x102 or at Avon@scherffinsurance.com.

THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE”

CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joyful Noise was a contemporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritually and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Music Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the recognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will culminate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us during our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and identifying folks to assist on various committees that have been formed. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-9929392, e-mail info@stutteringhelp.org, or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. For the last couple of months, I’ve had to mow every week. Even now, the soil is still moist due to all the passing thunderstorms we seem to be having and the lawn is still growing almost as fast as it was in spring. Usually we get a break from mowing about now as the heat slows down the growth of the “cool season” grass types that make up our northern lawns. Not so this year. This non-stop mowing takes a toll on our lawn mowers. There’s still a lot of mowing ahead so now would be a good time to take a few moments to take care of mower maintenance to insure that our mowers are in tip top shape for the rest of the season. This is one of those chores that is easy to put off but wise gardeners will protect their investment but finding the time. Let’s start with the oil. We all know that we should change our car’s oil every 3,000 miles but, what about our lawn mower? Our mowers don’t have odometers so we can’t measure its usage in miles. It is recommended that you change your mower’s engine oil after every 25 hours of use. Of course your mower doesn’t have a gauge or even an “idiot light’ to tell us when these hours have elapsed so we have to estimate. Say your lawn takes an hour and a half to mow. That means that you should change your oil after you’ve mowed your lawn about 17 times. Everyone’s lawn and mower is a different size so this is something you’ll have to figure out on your own. My lawn takes about 4 hours to mow so I need to change my oil after only about 6 mowings. Considering that the mower cost about a grand, I’m willing to tackle the task. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when replacing the oil. Almost all mowers require SAE 30w oil. Don’t make the mistake of just grabbing some automotive oil out of your garage and using it in your mower. These multi viscosity oils (5w-30w, 20w-50w, etc.) are NOT made for use in mower engines and should NOT be used unless your owner’s manual says to do so. If you’ve lost the owner’s manual, ask a qualified mower mechanic what your type of engine oil to use. 99.9% of mowers will need SAE 30W oil. Be careful when you’re refilling you mower’s engine with fresh oil. They don’t hold much oil and it’s easy to put too much in. Overfilling the engine with oil creates extra friction and shortens the life of the engine. A little too much of a good thing. The next big issue is blade sharpness. Never mow with a dulled blade. A dull blade will thrash and shred the blades of grass. This is unsightly and shocks the grass unnecessarily. Worse yet, it puts a lot of extra strain on the engine since it’s a lot harder for the mower to shred the grass with a dull blade than slice it with a sharp one. All this extra work by the engine shortens its life. To avoid EVER mowing with a dull blade, I’ve invested in a spare blade. When the blade on the mower gets dull, I replace it with the new blade and I drop off the dull one at my local power equipment dealer for sharpening. Just as with my razor, a fresh blade is always close at hand. Last but not least, clean the air filter every time you change the oil. My mower has a foam filter so all I have to do to clean it is squeeze it in soapy water, rinse it in clean water and let it air dry before putting it back into the mower. If your mower has a paper filter, keep an extra one on hand so you can change it as needed. Of course, always unhook the spark plug when you’re working on your mower. I know that there are lots of mowers out there that have been mowing away all season with oil that has been in use since last year. If one of these mowers is yours then you’ve got to ask yourself, “Am I feeling lucky?” Save yourself some big bucks and take a few minutes to change the oil. You know who you are. Just DO it. If and when drier, extended summer weather arrives, let your lawn get taller, maybe (4” to 5”) as long as the weather stays hot. If you scalp it, the sun will heat the soil to temperatures that will kill the roots of your lawn. Letting it get a little longer allows the blades of the grass to shade the soil keeping soil temperatures from getting high enough to cause permanent damage to the roots. Thanks for the read.

GREAT GIFTS FOR DEAR OLD DAD

Father’s Day is right around the corner, and the time has come once again to begin searching for a gift for dear old dad. Father’s Day gift shoppers have long since abandoned the notion that a new necktie is what dad really wants, but finding a gift that expresses your love and appreciation for the old man can still prove somewhat challenging.

ECLECTIC FATHER'S DAY GIFT IDEAS FOR DAD (NewsUSA) - What is it about Father's Day that can hang up the savviest gift giver? For Mother's Day, the presents are easy and unfailing: perfume, Godiva chocolate, dinner, flowers or a gift certificate for a massage. Dads, however, seem to always end up with the short end of the stick. "This is the time you can indulge Dad and get him those things he's ogled, but hasn't gone to buy on his own," says Byon Penn, a manager at Jerry's Home Improvement Center in Eugene, Ore. "But the ole, traditional necktie doesn't quite cut it these days." Eric Garland, a father of two, agrees. "There's less of an emotional hoopla around Father's Day traditionally, because men were considered more selfreliant," Garland told USA Today in an interview. "We don't expect a lot, frankly. We don't ask for it ? that goes to the image of men as the strong, silent provider who don't need the open emotional support and affirmation of even those who are closest to them, which are their families. But I think that's changing." To help you find the perfect gift for the perfect man, the following tips might help: * The Stylish Dad. A bottle of his favorite Scotch, some cufflinks made from the wood of his favorite baseball park, or if you must get a tie, perhaps a silk tie from Brioni or Turn-bull & amp; Asser will be sure to please. * The Tobacco-Loving Dad. Cigars or pipes, will do for the

gentleman who appreciates a good smoke now and again.

Oftentimes, the best gifts are the ones that fulfill a need or want, and Father’s Day gifts are no exception. The following are a handful of Father’s Day gift ideas for dads whose hobbies run the gamut.

And for those dads who would rather indulge in smokeless tobacco, consider accoutrements like a portable spittoon. FLASR (www. flasr.com), an Atlanta-based tobacco accessory producer, has created a one-of-a-kind, pocket-sized spittoon that allows dads to take snuff, dip or chew anywhere they are. It's perfect for everyday use or while hunting, fishing or any other outdoor sporting or leisure event. FLASR reusable spittoons feature the exclusive Thumb-Lok Twist Cap for one-handed ease of use. This innovative closing mechanism ensures that it stays securely closed when not in use, eliminating the risk of spill and leaks often seen with cups and bottles.

The Sports Nut

* The Outdoor Dad. Barbecues are a classic gift for those who fashion themselves Master of the Grill. Anything hobby- and leisure-related, such as a tackle box or digital fishing scale for the fisherman, or a 10-in-one tool that will saw tree limbs or open a bottle of wine for the rugged outdoorsman are also great ideas.

Dads who can’t get enough of their favorite teams would no doubt appreciate some new gear or even tickets to see their favorite teams play. If you opt to buy tickets to a ballgame, make it a family affair, as dad would no doubt appreciate an afternoon at the ballpark with his kids and/or grandkids. For a father who no longer lives in the market where his teams play, consider purchasing a streaming service or television package that allows the old man to see his favorite team no matter where he’s living. The Movie Mogul

Some dads simply can’t get enough of the silver screen, and a streaming service that allows dad to watch many of his favorite movies on demand from the comforts of home might make the perfect gifts for film-loving fathers. Services like Netflix and Amazon Prime offer hundreds of titles, and monthly or yearly subscriptions cost relatively little money. The Outdoorsman

Fathers who love the great outdoors might appreciate some new camping gear, a new fishing pole or even some comfortable hiking boots. When shopping for the outdoorsman in your life, consider which outdoor activity is his favorite (i.e., boating, fishing, kayaking, etc.) and try to find the latest useful gadget or newest product made for such enthusiasts. If you don’t share the same passion for the great outdoors and are hesitant to buy something you’re unsure about, a gift certificate to an outdoorsman or sporting goods store will suffice. The Doting Grandfather

Some men simply want to spend more time with family, especially grandfathers who never tire of afternoons with their grandchildren. If dad has retired and moved away, a trip to see his grandkids might make the ideal gift this Father’s Day. Arrange the dates with mom so you are not surprising dad with a trip at a time when he already has plans, and make sure to schedule some fun activities for those days when dad is in town.

Father’s Day is a time each year when dads are told how much they are loved and appreciated. This year, a gift that implies both those sentiments is sure to make dad smile.

587-1279 or 788-1399 still make sure your landscape adds to your home’s appeal by keeping a watchful eye on the property and addressing any issues that arise. Maintain your lawn through the colder months of the year as well, making sure no one walks on the grass when frost has settled, as doing so can produce dead spots throughout the lawn.

around the property. Line walkways with flowers native to your region, as such plants will last longer than exotic alternatives that may not be capable of adapting to the local climate. INEXPENSIVE WAYS TO BOOST A HOME’S CURB APPEAL

• Redo your front door. While their eyes may initially be drawn to a well-manicured lawn, prospective buyers will eventually find their way to the front door. If your door is especially old, consider replacing it. If your budget does not allow for such an expense, you can still give your home’s front entrance an entirely new look by installing some inexpensive molding around the door before giving the door a fresh coat of paint. Molding around the front door can make an entrance more impressive, while a new coat of paint can make a home feel warmer and more vibrant.

Another creative way to make use of colorful flowers is to place a few planters at the foot of your driveway and painting the numbers of your address on the planters. This can be both effortless and inexpensive, but it can instantly make a home more inviting to prospective buyers.

Curb appeal can go a long way toward making a home more attractive to its inhabitants as well as prospective buyers once the house is put on the market. Improving curb appeal is a goal for many homeowners, and while many projects aimed at making homes more aesthetically appealing can be costly, there are ways for cost-conscious homeowners to improve their properties without breaking the bank. • Put your green thumb to use. A well-maintained landscape can dramatically improve a home’s curb appeal. Pay attention to the plants, shrubs and trees throughout your property, watering them during periods of little rainfall and trimming them when necessary so your lawn does not look like an overgrown, neglected suburban jungle. Professional landscaping services can help you maintain your property, but even if your budget does not allow for such an expense, you can

Many homeowners focus on improving the curb appeal of their property during the daytime hours, but you can take steps to make a home more appealing at night as well. Private sellers may know that the amount of mileage on their vehicles will go a long way toward determining their asking price, but they may not know that certain mileage milestones can affect how prospective buyers view their automobiles. For example, savvy buyers know that manufacturer warranties tend to expire after three years or 36,000 miles,

5/31/15,

whichever comes first. That may make a vehicle less attractive to buyers or inspire buyers to ask that the price of an extended warranty be deducted from the asking price of the vehicle. Another important mileage marker to consider is the 60,000mile marker. Upon reaching 60,000 miles, many vehicles need certain upgrades, including new brakes. Sellers who wish to unload their

preowned vehicle as quickly as possible may want to make these upgrades prior to selling their vehicles and showcase the service records to prospective buyers. If not, sellers should be flexible with their asking price, as buyers are likely to know that significant maintenance could be just around the corner for a vehicle that has exceeded the 60,000 mile mark.

873 Saratoga Road Route 50 • Burnt Hills HIGH TECH CAN MAKE DRIVING SAFER (NAPS)—More than 420,000 people are injured each year in motor vehicle accidents involving distracted drivers—but technology can help reduce your risk by improving your awareness behind the wheel, no matter how old your vehicle may be. Safe Solutions Safe driving starts with smart decisions. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) firmly believes safety is para-

mount in a moving vehicle, and a driver’s highest priority must be maintaining safe control at all times. That’s why CEA supports legislation that bans texting while driving and places strict limits on the use of electronics by novice drivers. CEA also developed the Innovating Safety campaign to help consumers and improve awareness and understanding of the broad spectrum of safety-enhancing technologies available today. Distraction Wheel

the

All kinds of things can distract you when you’re driving—using your phone, daydreaming, talking to your passengers or paying attention to anything other than the road ahead. Statistically speaking, newer drivers are over-represented in fatality and injury crash statistics, and studies have found that teens are more prone

to dangerous distractions while driving. Innovation Can Drive Safety

Improve

For parents wondering what they can do to improve their teenagers’ driving habits, there are all kinds of products available to help. Some products limit cell phone usage and texting abilities and create incentives for good driving behavior. Other devices connect you to your car, even when you’re not in it, letting parents access information on their teens’ driving habits, set “safety zones” and monitor vehicle location. More advanced driver-monitoring solutions track the driver’s eye movements and whether the driver’s hands are on the wheel. This technology can then initiate corrective action when the driver’s behavior appears to match that of a distracted

person. Other high-tech safety products include blind spot indicators, backup cameras and crash avoidance systems that help drivers increase their awareness of other cars, pedestrians and dangerous obstructions. Additionally, voice-activated GPS navigational systems enhance situational awareness. New-Car Tech For Your OldTech Car The primary vehicles for most American drivers are more than 11 years old. Fortunately, many technology companies are developing a broad range of aftermarket devices that can be installed seamlessly in most cars to enhance the safety. For expert advice on solutions and installation for your vehicle, look for retailers whose installers carry the CEA Mobile Electronics Certified Professionals (MECP)

certification. There are more than 3,500 MECP installers in the U.S. These experts have the training to ensure you pick the right solution and the skill to install it correctly. After all, smart driving starts with smart decisions.
