I am I can, a mentoring program for girls in grades 9-12, is seeking professional women to work with new students to the program. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student on a one-to-one basis, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance in achieving their post-graduation goals. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Shenendehowa, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE”
CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joyful Noise was a contemporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritually and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Music Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the recognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will culminate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us during our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and identifying folks to assist on various committees that have been formed. HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. For the last couple of months, I’ve had to mow every week. Even now, the soil is still moist due to all the passing thunderstorms we seem to be having and the lawn is still growing almost as fast as it was in spring. Usually we get a break from mowing about now as the heat slows down the growth of the “cool season” grass types that make up our northern lawns. Not so this year. This non-stop mowing takes a toll on our lawn mowers. There’s still a lot of mowing ahead so now would be a good time to take a few moments to take care of mower maintenance to insure that our mowers are in tip top shape for the rest of the season. This is one of those chores that is easy to put off but wise gardeners will protect their investment but finding the time. Let’s start with the oil. We all know that we should change our car’s oil every 3,000 miles but, what about our lawn mower? Our mowers don’t have odometers so we can’t measure its usage in miles. It is recommended that you change your mower’s engine oil after every 25 hours of use. Of course your mower doesn’t have a gauge or even an “idiot light’ to tell us when these hours have elapsed so we have to estimate. Say your lawn takes an hour and a half to mow. That means that you should change your oil after you’ve mowed your lawn about 17 times. Everyone’s lawn and mower is a different size so this is something you’ll have to figure out on your own. My lawn takes about 4 hours to mow so I need to change my oil after only about 6 mowings. Considering that the mower cost about a grand, I’m willing to tackle the task. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when replacing the oil. Almost all mowers require SAE 30w oil. Don’t make the mistake of just grabbing some automotive oil out of your garage and using it in your mower. These multi viscosity oils (5w-30w, 20w-50w, etc.) are NOT made for use in mower engines and should NOT be used unless your owner’s manual says to do so. If you’ve lost the owner’s manual, ask a qualified mower mechanic what your type of engine oil to use. 99.9% of mowers will need SAE 30W oil. Be careful when you’re refilling you mower’s engine with fresh oil. They don’t hold much oil and it’s easy to put too much in. Overfilling the engine with oil creates extra friction and shortens the life of the engine. A little too much of a good thing. The next big issue is blade sharpness. Never mow with a dulled blade. A dull blade will thrash and shred the blades of grass. This is unsightly and shocks the grass unnecessarily. Worse yet, it puts a lot of extra strain on the engine since it’s a lot harder for the mower to shred the grass with a dull blade than slice it with a sharp one. All this extra work by the engine shortens its life. To avoid EVER mowing with a dull blade, I’ve invested in a spare blade. When the blade on the mower gets dull, I replace it with the new blade and I drop off the dull one at my local power equipment dealer for sharpening. Just as with my razor, a fresh blade is always close at hand. Last but not least, clean the air filter every time you change the oil. My mower has a foam filter so all I have to do to clean it is squeeze it in soapy water, rinse it in clean water and let it air dry before putting it back into the mower. If your mower has a paper filter, keep an extra one on hand so you can change it as needed. Of course, always unhook the spark plug when you’re working on your mower. I know that there are lots of mowers out there that have been mowing away all season with oil that has been in use since last year. If one of these mowers is yours then you’ve got to ask yourself, “Am I feeling lucky?” Save yourself some big bucks and take a few minutes to change the oil. You know who you are. Just DO it. If and when drier, extended summer weather arrives, let your lawn get taller, maybe (4” to 5”) as long as the weather stays hot. If you scalp it, the sun will heat the soil to temperatures that will kill the roots of your lawn. Letting it get a little longer allows the blades of the grass to shade the soil keeping soil temperatures from getting high enough to cause permanent damage to the roots. Thanks for the read.

SCHUYLERVILLE – Heritage Hunters of Saratoga County will meet on Saturday, June 20th, at 1pm at the Town of Saratoga Town Hall, corner of Rt. 4 and Rt. 29 in Schuylerville. David R. Starbuck, author and educator, will present a review of the archeological digs he has supervised in our area over the past 30 years. The sites include; the Saratoga National Historic Park, Mount Independence on Lake Champlain, Rogers Island and other Fort Edward sites, Fort William Henry, and his current project, Lake George Battlefield Park. Dr. Starbuck is Professor of Anthropology at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. Among the books he has authored are: Massacre at Fort William Henry; Rangers and Redcoats on the Hudson; and Excavating the Sutler’s House: Artifacts of the British Armies in Fort Edward and Lake George. Topaz Topaz is a really sweet and friendly kitty who was found left in an apartment after the owners had moved away. Topaz would make a super lap cat.She has been spayed, vet checked and is up to date on all her shots. Blitzer is a 4 year old Husky mix. He is neutered and up to date on shots. Blitzer is very sweet and smart. He loves to cuddle and meet new people. He likes to go for walks but around the house he is a laid back guy who just loves to snuggle up next to you. He knows how to sit, lay down, stay, and shake and listens well when his name is called. As you can see he likes to have his picture taken and is very photogenic. He is 100% potty trained and very well behaved in the house. Blitzer has been introduced to others dogs and has done well. CLIFTON PARK – On June 26, from 9:00am to 4:00pm, the Shenendehowa Adult Community Center, located at 6 Clifton Common Court, Clifton Park, will hold a Senior to Senior Animal Adoption Clinic hosted by The Town of Clifton Park and Saratoga County Animal Shelter. Dogs and cats, over the age of 5, are looking for homes with seniors over age 60. Adopting a cat is free and dogs are $6 to cover the license fee. All cats and dogs are totally vetted, meaning they are spayed/ neutered and have had all of the appropriate shots for their age.
