BALLSTON SPA – The Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association will hold its Annual Meeting and Community Mixer on Monday, March 18, from 6-8pm at the Ballston Spa Elks Lodge, 10 Hamilton Street. The Association will be celebrating its 30th year of service to the Ballston Spa community. The BSBPA was formed in 1983 to promote the village of Ballston Spa, its businesses and merchants, and to foster community pride through events, activities and village beautification. The Annual Meeting and Mixer will begin with a social hour and buffet at 6pm, followed by the official meeting at 7pm. Officer elections will be held, along with a wrap up of BSBPA achievements over the past 30 years and a look toward the future. This event is open to the public; the cost is $20 per person. Non-members attending that evening will receive a $5 discount off membership dues if they join the Association. 6th Annual Celtic Jam CAPITAL REGION – The Scotia-Glenville Pipe Band is proud to announce their Sixth Annual Celtic Jam at 7pm on Friday, March 8, in the Scotia-Glenville High School Auditorium, Scotia. The New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs and the New York State Showpeople’s Association sponsor the scholarships. The qualifying students must be active at the Saratoga County Fair or with the New York State Showpeople’s Association. I know that it is hard to believe, but in only a few short weeks we’ll be out in our yards cleaning up and planning our summer gardens. This is a great time to get reacquainted with your yard. Before you set foot in a nursery to select plants for your landscape, you need to understand conditions in your yard. I call this “Learning Your Yard”. Gardening success starts with knowing how much light a plant needs and where conditions in your yard match up with the plant’s requirements. I’ve spent a lot of time helping folks with plant selections. One of the first questions I must ask before I can make logical recommendations is, “What direction does your house face?” More often than you would believe, the answer I get is “the road”. Obviously this isn’t the information I’m looking for. I’m simply trying to deduce how much sunlight the site will potentially receive. The largest factor influencing conditions in your yard is the house. Each wall faces a different direction, and each direction has different qualities of light and exposure that determine which plants will grow and thrive in that location. Let’s examine the growing conditions of walls facing the four cardinal compass points. The east-facing wall is exposed to the sunrise so it will get morning sun until about noon and then shade for the rest of the day. That means that this side of the house will get about 6 hours of direct sun a day during the growing season. This morning sun is considered the most “balanced” light of the day. It lacks the hot, infrared quality of afternoon sun. Plants that require shady conditions may be able to tolerate 3 or 4 hours of eastern exposure whereas the same amount of western or afternoon sun would be too hot for shade loving plants. The east-facing wall is also the most sheltered area in the yard. The house acts as a windbreak; protecting this area from the cold, dry prevailing wind that blows from the west and northwest in winter. This dry winter wind is the worst enemy of rhododendron, azaleas, holly and other broadleaf evergreens making the east-facing wall the location of choice for this family of plants. The south-facing wall of the house provides the sunniest exposure possible with twelve or more hours of direct sun per day. All of this sun makes it the perfect location for most flowering shrubs as well as sun-loving annuals and perennials. Plants that require full sun will need at least seven hours of direct sun per day and the south wall will provide all that and more. Plants that require shade will overheat when planted on the south side of the house. People who love flower gardening are always thrilled to have good southern exposure. The west-facing wall gets the second half of the day’s sun from noon until sunset. Afternoon sun is much hotter and infrared than its morning counterpart. This makes it possible for many sun-loving plants to do well even though they will only get a half a day of sun when planted against a west-facing wall. Shade plants that may thrive in the morning sun will find the west-facing wall too hot. The west-facing wall is also exposed to prevailing wind that blows from the west and northwest so, even though light conditions might be appropriate for broadleaf evergreens, winter wind will make this a tough location for them. The north-facing wall gets less direct sunlight (in fact none) than any other location against the house. This and the fact that it is directly exposed to drying north winds in winter make this one of the most challenging areas to plant. Lack of direct sun makes it impossible to grow most flowering shrubs and roses will never do well. Naturally the north wind will make it impossible for broadleaf evergreens to survive this location. There are some junipers and other durable evergreens that can live here. The greener the plant the better, since gold or blue evergreens need more sun than a north-facing wall will provide to maintain their color. Shade loving perennials and annuals are good choices to brighten up this difficult wall. Of course, few houses face exactly south, north, east or west. If your house faces southeast, for instance, it will have a combination of east and south wall qualities. Then there are the other factors that will influence the “micro-climates” within your yard. There may be a large shade tree on the south side of the house so, instead of getting full sun all day, that side of the house may only get direct sun for a couple of hours. There may be a fence or evergreen hedge to the west of your yard that blocks the wind from that direction making it possible to plant rhododendrons there. These are the variables that you’ll need to learn to make logical plant selections and take best advantage of your garden spaces. The most successful gardeners are those who understand what their yard has to offer and learn to work with it. Take the time to observe the way the sunlight moves across your yard, the path the wind takes and the other variables that affect your little piece of the planet. Then you’ll be able to shop at the garden center in with your yard’s qualities clearly in mind….and you won’t find someone asking you, “Now, when you’re standing in your front doorway, where does the sun come up?” Thanks for the read.

Malta to hold Armed Forces Day Parade
MALTA – The Town of Malta is planning a special salute to the military by holding a parade on Saturday, May 18, “Armed Forces Day.” The Town has been running an annual parade since 2009 on the Saturday prior to Patriot Day – the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. March 2013 will be the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq and there has been no regional parade to mark the service and sacrifice of this new generation of veterans. The Malta Veterans Committee has tproposed a tribute parade to focus on this generation, while still acknowledging all previous ones. Have you ever wondered how some people are such wizards on iPads, Droids, and other mobile tools, busily posting away on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and all sorts of strange sites with exotic names? You’re not alone. I confess it wasn’t all that long ago when I was scared to death of delving into the social media world. Today, digital communication is my number one method of reaching friends, family, colleagues, and even employees! Many of the Chamber’s programs are now Pete Bardunias, directed by digital communications. For example I can put out a call for volunteers or an event announcement President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County on Facebook and quickly get a large response. The key is to know and understand the best digital applications for your situation. To help business owners and interested citizens figure that out, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County and the Burnt Hills – Ballston Lake Business and Professionals’ Association (BPA) are proud to present a seminar entitled “Digital Communications: Building Your Arsenal To Mobile & Online Success”. This presentation, featuring local experts, will take place at the Ballston Spa National Bank building, 990 State Route 67 in Ballston Spa, on Wednesday, March 6th from 8-9:30AM. Panelists include Peter Dean of RenderTribe, a Saratoga Springs-based digital marketing company, Kim Hickok of Web Instinct, a web development company, and Rick Noel, of eBizROI, an internet marketing service provider. The discussion will be moderated by Nigar Hale, MBA, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County’s Vice President of Marketing and Membership Development, and President of the American Marketing Association, Capital Region Chapter. This is a great cast of experts, all heavily involved in the southern Saratoga business community and well versed in the most effective digital communications strategies for local entrepreneurs.
