The committee intends to release more information in the weeks ahead. Program on “First Lady” Mary Todd Lincoln MALTA – The Malta Branch of the Round Lake Library will be presenting a Presidents’ Day program about Mary Todd Lincoln on Wednesday, February 13 from 6:30-8:30pm. Local author Patricia Nugent will lead a lively discussion about the first “First Lady,” presenting from her recently published article about Mary Todd Lincoln in the Ms. Magazine blog. The talk will explore whether Mary Todd Lincoln was a lunatic, as her only surviving son testified, or was she a woman who had suffered immeasurable loss with too little support? The discussion will explore how extreme grief can masquerade as insanity. Recently brought to life on the big screen by Sally Field in Lincoln, there’s a new compassion for, and interest in, this woman so loved by our beloved 16th president yet called “one of the most detested public women in American history” by historians. Books written about Mrs. Lincoln will be reviewed. For more information, contact the library at 682-2495. (P)

O’BRIEN PHARMACY

Falling In Love With Chocolate Valentine’s Day and chocolate have been linked for some time now, but there really hasn’t been any definitive explanation for just why the delicious confection and the day of love seem to go hand in hand. The average American eats 11 pounds of chocolate every year, a significant percentage of which is enjoyed around Valentine’s Day. The reason people are known to enjoy and crave chocolate may be connected to its chemical components.

Chocolate has been known to affect mood in many ways. It contains 380 known chemicals, triggering a host of responses in the brain. Chocolate can trigger the production of opioids, which are chemicals, such as those found in opium, that produce a feeling of well-being (euphoria). Eating chocolate then may make a person feel better, which is why chocolate is often a turn-to comfort snack. Chocolate also may work like THC, the chemical components in marijuana, extending the feeling of being “high” or well-being. Chocolate can also increase blood pressure and bloodsugar levels, attributing to feelings of alertness. The caffeine in chocolate also acts as a stimulant.

Did You Know? Many early Christian martyrs were named Valentine, which can make it confusing when trying to figure out just who is being honored on Valentine’s Day. While there might be many martyrs named Valentine, the two honored on Valentine’s Day are Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni. The former was a Roman priest who was martyred in roughly 269 AD, while the latter was bishop of what is now Terni who was martyred in 197 AD. It was not until the 14th century that any of today’s popular romantic elements began to take shape when celebrating Valentine’s Day. As a result of those new developments, the distinctions between Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni were gradually lost, eventually prompting the feast of St. Valentine on February 14 to be removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1969. olate appears to contain phenylalanine, the same chemical that is produced by the brain when people fall in love. Doctors think that eating chocolate creates a temporary “love high.” For those gifting chocolate for Valentine’s Day, consider dark chocolate, which is also high in antioxidants. SAM’S CHINESE

“Love” is a powerful word that describes one of the most potent human emotions. The word is believed to have evolved from the Proto-IndoEuropean’s word “leubh,” which described care and desire nearly five thousand years ago. The word was incorporated into Old English as “lufu,” a noun meaning “deep affection” and a verb “lufian” meaning “to be very fond of.”

Throw A Sensational Super Bowl Party The culmination of the American football season is on the horizon. Millions of people will tune in to watch two teams battle for the title of champion. While the teams may be busy prepping their last-minute offensive and defensive strategies, sports fans across the country are doing their own strategizing by planning the perfect game-day party. The first AFL-NFL World Championship Game in professional American football, later known as Super Bowl I, was played on January 15, 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs. Since that day, ardent fans and novices alike have been celebrating football by hosting their own viewing parties at home. These parties present yet another way for friends to get together. As the opening kickoff draws closer, here are some keys to Super Bowl party success. * Know your playing field. Your home is only so big, and that means you will have to limit the number of people you can invite. Crowding too many people into the house can be uncomfortable and dangerous, never mind trying to talk and hear above the cacophony of too many people. Take inventory of how many you can seat comfortably. You may need to move out larger furniture and move in folding chairs if you plan to accommodate more guests. If you live in a warmer climate, you may be able to hook up the television outside and host an outdoor event in the yard. This will enable even more people to attend. * Size up your competition. Super Bowl Sunday is a once-ayear event. There will be thousands of like-minded individuals planning their own parties and utilizing the same services in your local area. Those who need to rent tables and chairs and rely on a caterer (or the services of the nearest pizza joint) should plan early. If you would like to have a football gathering, start laying the groundwork a few months in advance. This way you can leave deposits for any vendors and be secure in knowing you will have what you need come gameday.

fans want to upgrade their televisions for the big game. If yours is a TV that has seen better days or doesn’t offer the high-definition picture guests have come to expect, this may be the time to cash in holiday gift cards for a new flat-screen. If buying new isn’t a possibility at this time, there are centers that will rent electronics.

* Watch the clock. Hardcore fans will not want to miss any of the action. Therefore, refreshments and other components of the party will have to coordinate to the timing of the game. Do the bulk of food preparation before kickoff and allow guests to mingle and fuel up before the game starts. Save finger foods and other snacks that are easily accessible for when the game starts. Guests can take a break at halftime and grab food and beverages that are set up buffet-style in another room. Hosts and hostesses also may want to consider serving as food “butlers” and constantly come out with new finger foods on trays and go around the room to ensure everyone doesn’t miss a moment of the game.

*Establish your play book. Will this be a chips-and-dips type of party or will you be offering more substantial fare? Is it adultsonly or are guests able to bring their kids along? Make a list of questions that need to be answered and set up the party parameters. This way you will know what to stock up on in advance. Consider allocating a separate room in the house for kids’ play or for adults who are there for the social aspect of the party and will not necessarily be glued to the television.

* Don’t run interference. There’s not much entertainment that needs to be scheduled on game day apart from the game itself. Ensure that the television is situated so nobody’s view is obstructed and that people moving in and out of the room need not cross in front of the TV to get food or use the restroom. While it may be customary to decorate your home with a few decorations, ensure any decorations do not obstruct views of the game. To make things comfortable for the largest number of people, consider having two TVs tuned into the game running in separate rooms. This way, guests can mingle and not be tied to one area.

* Check your equipment. What is the Super Bowl without a means to watch the game? Retailers often offer the best deals on new televisions this time of year because they know sports

Super Bowl parties are fun ways to enjoy the last football game of the season and have a houseful of guests celebrate and socialize.

1/2 cup Mayonnaise 1

clove garlic, minced

1

tablespoon onion, grated

1

teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped

1

tablespoon red wine vinegar

1/3 cup blue cheese, crumbled

Directions Preheat the barbecue on high. Cut each wing at the joint to make two pieces, and discard wing tip if still attached. In a large re-sealable bag, whisk together vegetable oil, garlic, spices and vinegar. Add chicken wings and toss to coat. If using rotisserie basket, spray or brush lightly with vegetable oil to prevent sticking. Place chicken wings on bottom of basket, cover with the top part, and fasten on tightest setting to secure the wings in place. Cooking grids will need to be removed, and a drip pan placed beneath. If using rear rotisserie burner, set to high. If using lower burners, set to medium. Place the basket on spit and in the rotisserie and start the motor. Cook until golden brown and crisp, about 45 minutes to an hour. If cooking directly on well oiled cooking grids, turn heat to low, and cook, turning frequently until golden brown and crisp, 30 - 45 minutes. Use an instant-read thermometer to ensure that all wings are cooked through and ready to eat. Stir together all the dip ingredients. May be made ahead of time and chilled until ready to serve with chicken wings, celery and carrots.

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week Joey

This outgoing young man was dumped at a trailer park. While fending for himself things didn't go too well and his tail was badly injured. Once rescued the tail had to be amputated, but Joey is such a vibrant kitty, who packs in enough fabulousness that a tail was not needed anyway. Joey LOVES petting and attention, but can get a little nippy if overstimulated. Kind of like when people get "slappy" if they don't like being tickled (well at least that's what happens to THIS writer). :) For that reason, a home without young children may be the best fit for him. Joey is at the Annex at Clifton park Center Mall.

Eliza

Eliza was living under an elder lady’s porch with her kitten when HOPE stepped in to help her find a real home. Eliza is about 6 years old and does well with other cats. She has a mildmannered purrsonality that assimilates well into various types of households. Friendly and affectionate, she loves to cuddle and engage. After temporary quarters for so long, our “fair lady” is ready to become someone’s forever cat. Eliza is at the Annex at Clifton Park Center Mall.

IF YOU USED the Mirena IUD between 2000-present and suffered perforation or embedment in the uterus requiring surgical removal, pelvic inflammatory disease leading to hysterectomy or had a child born with birth defects you may be entitiled to compensation. Janice

Janice is a bit of an older kitty - her angular face suggests a smattering of siamese in this cutie. Saved from the streets of Troy and new to HOPE, her bio is forthcoming, but you can meet her in person at the Annex in Clifton Park Center Mall.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon - adult female. Cinnamon may be a little shy at first and might even hide, but, don’t lose hope. If you are patient with her she will learn to trust you and start coming around. Once she does she’s a HUGE lovebug! Loves sitting on laps and getting all the scratchies she can - and will purr up a storm. Could go as an only kitty or maybe with another kitty or two - not too sure about dogs. There were two in her foster home, but she preferred to keep her distance. Cinnamon is now at the Annex.

Mia

Mia - young adult female - found wandering the streets in Amsterdam. Sweet as pie - just wants to sit in your lap - not always crazy about other cats - may do better on her own.

Champ

Classic tabby looks and the sweet charms of the boy cat you always wanted......This handsome boy was wandering the snowy streets of Queensbury when he was picked up by animal control. When his 5 days were up, HOPE saved his life and took him in. A friendly 3ish years old, Champ had clearly been someone’s pet. Champ has been extremely gentle and affectionate - immediately after coming in at the Annex, he seemed a little growly with his new kitty cage neighbors, but he seems to be settling in now. Champ is at the Annex at Clifton Park Center Mall.

Volunteer Opportunities to Help Seniors

SO. SARATOGA COUNTY – Sometimes we feel better about ourselves when we do something to make someone else’s life better. You can have a chance to start the New Year off by giving a little of your time as a Care Links’ volunteer. This program helps anyone 60+ with services that help them stay in their homes. Transportation, visiting, respite, shopping and chores are some of the non-medical services provided residents in Clifton Park, Halfmoon, Malta and Mechanicville. If you are interested in learning more about what being a volunteer entails or to request services, call 399-3262. (A)

Late January is a quiet time for the gardener. This is the time of year I like to get out my maps (rough drafts to be sure) of last year’s gardens and beds and review and refine any changes I’ll want to make. The non-hardy bulbs and tubers that I have stored for spring planting are due for their mid-winter inspection. I like to remove them from their shoe box storage containers and inspect them for any problems. Around this time I like to pot up some of my ‘Iron Cross” Oxalis and get them started under lights. There is no real reason to do this other than the good feeling I get watching them sprout and grow. My cats have again decided that they don’t really enjoy the snowy, cold weather so I’ll grow some ryegrass from seed for them to munch on to supplement their diet. They seem to enjoy it and they are less tempted to snack on the houseplants if the grass is available. During late January and early February, I like to spend some time repotting any houseplants that look like they need it. My hanging jade is a prime candidate for this. It did great over summer in its 8” pot but now the soil has shrunk away from the pot letting me know that it’s a bit overdue for repotting. I’ll only want to jump it up to a 10” pot. Since the hanging jade is a succulent, I’ll use cactus soil with a little regular potting soil added. It has also gotten a little straggly in appearance. It hangs down about 4’ from the rim of the pot but is looking a little sparse. To promote some filling in, I’ll remove about 2’ from each tendril to promote new growth further back along the stems. Rather than discarding the cut shoots, I’ll root them into some other pots. Spring or summer would be a better time for this project since they’ll root slowly in the middle of the winter but, since I have my grow lights fired up anyway I’m sure they’ll eventually take off. On closer inspection of the cut off tendrils, I notice that there are little gray nubs along the stems. These nubs represent latent roots that will develop once they come into contact with soil. I want to get as many rooted cuttings as possible to share so, instead of rooting the entire tendril, I’ll chop it into small sections with a pair of scissors. Each section will include at least one pair of leaves. I’ll let the cuttings dry out and “scab over” for a couple of days. This lessens the chance of the cutting rotting before they grow roots. After they’ve scabbed over, I’ll nestle the cuttings into the soil leaving just the leaves exposed. I like to put several cuttings into a 6” diameter pot. A thorough watering will wash the soil into contact with the latent root nubs. The only thing left to do is wait. Since the hanging jade is a succulent, I won’t need to water the cuttings for at least a couple of weeks after the initial soaking. Within a few weeks, I should see some tiny leaves starting to form at the base of the two leaves that were left exposed. By spring, they’ll be well rooted and ready to be given away to a home with lots of bright sun. This rooting procedure will work for most hanging plants that grow leaves all along their stems like Swedish Ivy or Wandering Jew. Non succulents will not need to scab over for more than a couple of hours. Dipping those cutting into a rooting powder before planting will aid in the quick formation of roots. Many folks like to root their cuttings in water, then transplant them into soil. The roots that a plant grows in water are very different than those that form in soil. It’s quicker and more reliable to root directly into soil. Thanks for the read.

Stars for Our Troops

CAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. Bringing Our Youth To The Forefront

It’s always fun to watch our young people mature right before our very eyes. My son Jonathan turned 13 this past fall, fully a foot taller than he was the year before. Other children in our “chamber family” such as Mitchell Roggenbuck, Rachel Rigney, Joseph Kumlander, and Jay Wachala were often seen helping their Mom or Dad around the Chamber office or at events in 2012. Last year we also heard the exciting stories Pete Bardunias, of up-and-coming talents such as Anna Williams, the preteen pen maker from Glenville, or teenage musical President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County phenoms from Clifton Park such as Mike LeRoy and Talia Denis. We watched young Rachel Samuels (granddaughter of Rockland Business Association CEO Al Samuels) compete in the Double M Rodeo, and 17 year old Molly Pokrzywka represent the Saratoga County Dairy Promotion Committee as our Dairy Princess. This past week we got a real treat as Mechanicville’s Michael Bove attended the Presidential Inauguration and shared his experiences with the rest of us via Facebook and radio. The 15 year old high school sophomore got the opportunity through a student program and was in attendance as President Obama took his second oath of office. We got to experience this historic day through Michael’s eyes, and that was a really enjoyable experience. In an age where our youngsters are often criticized for having their heads buried in Nintendos and video games, it’s refreshing to see how many of our local kids are already making an impact on our communities. Let’s keep this trend going and give these children the best possible chance to succeed! On February 12 I will join a group of esteemed colleagues at NYSERDA’s Business, Government and Academia Partnerships event at TecSmart in Malta, discussing ways to help our young people mature and develop the future Tech Valley workforce. .
