Fundraising Effort for Playground Kicks Off

GREENFIELD – The parents of Greenfield Elementary, a rural school in the Saratoga Springs District, have boldly embarked upon one of the largest recent projects of its kind that is garnering lots of attention. Its parent teacher organization, the Home School Association (HSA), is now leading a community “Feed the Dragon” campaign to be sure its children continue to have a recess area that is distinguishable, safe and accessible to all. The campaign features the Greenfield Elementary School dragon mascot and includes a year-long marketing campaign driven to raise money and build awareness for the project. Along with grant application writing, hundreds of sponsorship packets are being mailed to area businesses and residents. Events throughout the year will include such things as student dances, a “dragon” cookbook sale, a 5K race, in-school contests and a community gala early next year. The playground team developed a new logo, tagline “Feed the Dragon” and multiple promotional materials are being distributed throughout the region. The Greenfield Elementary HSA and Playground is a 501 (c) 3 organization. Donations can be made on the organization’s website at www.greenfieldplayground.com or by calling (518) 893-7402. (A)

The Value In Knowing R-Value (MS) -- If you are in the midst of renovating or building your home, it is likely you have heard the term “R-Value” being thrown around. Understanding what it means and its importance is the real test. Measuring the ability to limit the heat flow transferred through insulation is known as R-Value, say specialists in this field. Augmenting the traditional insulation in walls and ceilings is not typically regarded by industry specialists as an effective short-term or long-term solution, since it does not offer air ny.com sealing capabilities the way modern alternatives do.

Spray foam insulation, like that available from innovators Icynene, provides a consistent R-Value plus air seal in one step without the potential for sagging, settling or gaping that traditional insulation might. Adding further layers of insulation in a traditional environment just to increase R-Value eventually proves superfluous and ineffective with very little payback over the long-term. The United States Department of Energy says that compressed insulation will not provide its full R-Value. Moreover, the installed RValue will differ from the insulation R-Value itself due to heat flow around the home making it imperative that the insulation is properly installed by a professional who knows their product and how they work. Homeowners should stay ahead of the curve and understand what is right for their home to ensure its long-term sustainability. Further information on R-Values and air sealing can be found at www. icynene.com.

Homeowners looking to prevent their homes from becoming a meal or nesting site for potentially harmful insects may know to keep watch for termites during the year. But termites aren’t the only insects that can damage a home. There are a few other pests that can bore through the wood of homes and structures, potentially causing considerable damage. People can familiarize themselves with these other wood-boring bugs and recognize the signs of infestation. * Carpenter ants: These insects get their name because they prefer to nest above ground in wooden structures. Unlike their smaller ant cousins, who make intricate colony systems underground, larger carpenter ants prefer tree stumps, lumber, subfloors, or even roofs. They don’t use the wood for food, and can establish residence in just about any solid housing material, including rigid foam insulation.

* Powderpost beetles: Though termites might have the most name recognition, according to LivingWithBugs.com, powderpost beetles are potentially more destructive to seasoned wood. Wood boring powderpost beetles spend most of their lives as larvae (woodworms) in wood, where they tunnel in search of starch and other nutrients they need. They can cause all sorts of structural issues if they damage beams and other major components to homes. * Carpenter bees: These large bees resemble bumblebees, except they have a shiny black abdomen instead of a furry one. Carpenter bees bore symmetrical holes in exposed wood, where they lay eggs and in which larvae grow. Although the bees’ holes are superficial and rarely cause much damage, birds in search of larvae for food, such as woodpeckers, may peck at wood containing the larvae and cause more significant damage.

Make Household Drafts A Thing Of The Past (MS) -- Outside is below freezing and the heater is working overtime, but throughout the house there are cold, drafty areas. Does this sound familiar? Specialists in the field say that any cold or drafty areas within a home are typically caused by air leaks within the building envelope. Air leaks can make rooms uncomfortable and allow the air to escape, forcing heating equipment to work continually to compensate.

www.hard-scape.com Did You Know? According to TGB Enterprises in Burlington, Ontario, kitchen renovations are the most popular home improvement projects. Renovating a kitchen is a great way to increase the value and also the functionality of a home. The National Kitchen & Bath Association’s latest market report says that, in the first three months of 2012, the number of homeowners who started a kitchen renovation was up more than 50 percent from the previous quarter. A kitchen is a central gathering place and is one of the most popular family gathering spots in the house. With traditional dining rooms being eliminated in favor of open, eat-in kitchens and entertaining spaces, more attention than ever is now placed on a well-designed kitchen. The average remodeling budget for a kitchen renovation exceeds $30,000. But there are ways to keep budgets in check. * Do some of the work yourself to reduce money spent on labor costs.

Home Offices In Tight Spaces A home office is a necessity for many adults these days. While some people have entire rooms available to house a home office, others have to make do with less space, and that can mean fitting an office into a tight space. The first step in establishing a small home office is figuring out the space you have and any limitations that may accompany it. For example, maybe you have an unused corner in the living room but don’t want to have wires and equipment out in the open. An armoire-type desk that can be closed when not in use is a viable option in such a situation. Perhaps there is an unused closet in a bedroom. A wall-mounted desk surface, such as a piece of custom-cut countertop material, complete with foldaway mouse and keyboard tray can easily turn the space into a compact nook. Maybe there is an entryway with a small table that would be large enough for a laptop. A stool or ottoman that can be tucked under it can serve as a desk chair and extra seating for company.

* Consider laminate flooring and counters, which will look like real stone but at a fraction of the cost. * Skip custom cabinetry in lieu of stock units. They’re more attractive than ever before and don’t require the wait time of custom-ordered cabinets. * Choose less expensive, mid-range appliances that may function better than or equal to highend models. * Plan layout accurately and spend time reviewing your designs. Late changes in a remodel can quickly eat up a budget.

Call today to find out how you can get $50. for yourself and $50. for your neighbor.

Consider a home’s wall infrastructure. If traditional insulation material has been installed, replacing it with a modern alternative can help alleviate the high monthly energy costs. Stop-gap solutions such as caulking and sealing cracks might not be sufficient. However, spray foam insulation, like that available from innovators Icynene, provides a complete solution sealing any gaps that would allow heating and cooling to escape. The United States Department of Energy says that household heating and cooling accounts for around 54 percent of the average American’s utility bill. Savings could be achieved through proper equipment maintenance and upgrades. However, the Department of Energy explains that an energy efficient furnace alone will not have as great an impact on energy bills as using a whole-house approach.

Did You Know? According to Remodeling magazine’s 2011-2012 “Cost Vs. Value Report,” replacement projects perform better in resale value than other types of remodeling projects. Siding-, window- and door-replacement projects all recoup between 69 and 78 percent of their initial costs. Replacement projects perhaps recoup so much value because, with the exception of roofing projects, each of the projects examined in the report are priced at less than $19,000. Replacement projects also tend to rely heavily on durable, low-maintenance products, reducing the overall cost of the project while helping owners eventually regain more of their investment. In addition, replacement projects are known to instantly increase curb appeal, helping homeowners make a strong first impression with prospective buyers.

Albany, NY (October 15, 2012) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Goldstein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals” campaign helps support the mission of the organization, including sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the prevention of cruelty to animals. This year’s goal is to raise $125,000, in honor of the Society’s 125th Anniversary. To reach the goal, the Goldstein Auto Group will need to collect more than 1,500,000 cans and bottles. The 2012 "Empties For Animals” campaign has raised over $73,000 thru Sept. 2012, an increase of $17,638 or 33% over the same period last year. The 2011 campaign raised a total of more than $74,000 and collected 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans, based on the originating distributor, which in turn generated $.08 per can or bottle instead of the regular $.05 redemption fee paid at stores. Monies from the program were used to benefit the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2012 “Empties For Animals” campaign. We would like to thank all of our customers and the members of the community who have generously donated to such a worthy cause,” said Alan Goldstein, President of Goldstein Auto Group. A CLEAN HOUSE! Weekly or bi-monthly. Good rates and dependable. 899-2304 or 441-3598

Since this is the time of year when it makes the most sense to apply lime to your lawn, I think a little reminder is in order. Why is this the best time? To cause the pH correction you’re looking for, lime takes at least 3 months. If you test your soil and apply lime in the spring, you won’t see any benefit until the very end of the season. If you make your application now, the lime will have all winter to react with the soil and you’ll start out the growing season next year with nice, sweet soil. During my years in garden retailing, I’ve noticed a reluctance among residential turf specialists (you who care for the lawn) to pay attention to soil pH. Many folks are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on lawn food and moss controls but will dig in their heels when asked to spend a couple of bucks on a simple soil pH test kit. Go figure. I guess it sounds too “complicated and scientific” or something. We’re not talking hours of research in a laboratory here, just a thimble full of soil, one test tube and some distilled water. The benefits of properly adjusting the pH of the soil and the benefits of limestone itself are far reaching. I could carry on for pages about nutrients in the soil (or from the fertilizer you pay good money for) being “bound up” and unavailable to plants because of acidic soil. I could write reams on how the microorganisms that “feed” your lawn die off in soils with a low pH. I could rant and rave about how important calcium and magnesium (from limestone) are in formation of plant fiber or how osmosis (the ability of plant to draw moisture from the soil) is impeded in acidic soil. Let’s just say, its VERY important. Here’s the deal. There’s a tendency for soil to gradually become acidic over time. Decomposing organic matter (grass clippings in the case of your lawn), fertilizer and acid rain all contribute to acidification of the soil. In heavier soils like clay, this happens very slowly. In looser soils like sand, acidification occurs more rapidly. The more fertilizer and organic matter you apply to your lawn or garden, the more often you should check the pH. Different plants prefer different pH levels. Most vegetables grow best in slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5 to 6.8) while your lawn will be healthier if the soil is neutral (pH 7). Every once in a while I run into someone who’s heard that lime is good for the lawn and they’ll ask, “I’ve got an average size lawn and I’ve never limed it. How much lime should I apply?” To the uninformed, this seems like a reasonable question. To me, it’s like asking your mechanic, ”I have a mid-sized sedan. How much oil do I need to add?” There’s no way your mechanic could answer unless you allowed him/her to look at the dipstick. The inexpensive soil pH test kit is your “dipstick” to determine how much lime you need to apply for healthy plant growth. If I’m asked, “I have 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn and the pH is 6.0. How much lime should I apply?” I can then say that you need 10-40 lb. bags of pelletized lime to bring your soil’s pH up to the pH of 7.0 that it should have. Of course, you may not need to ask since the information is provided in the pH test kit. Unlike fertilizer applications, you won’t need to apply lime every year. Usually every 3 to 5 years, maybe even longer depending on the type of soil you have. Another benefit of checking and properly adjusting the pH of the soil in your lawn is the control of moss. I’m not telling you that lime applications will kill moss if it’s already established itself in your lawn but if you’d paid attention to the soil’s pH all along you probably wouldn’t have a moss problem to begin with. Moss won’t take hold and thrive unless the soil is acidic. Once it gets established, moss causes the soil in the area it’s growing to become acidic even faster; creating an environment that allows it to spread quickly. The net effect is that the moss kills off the grass by making the soil too acidic and then fills in the bare area that’s left. The whole situation can be avoided by checking and adjusting the soil’s pH regularly. Remember, too much lime will make the soil too alkaline for the grass to thrive so more isn’t better. The bottom line is this: you can spend a few bucks for a pH test kit and you’ll end up using less lawn food and have a healthier, more disease and drought resistant lawn while spending less. PH test kits are one of the best lawn care bargains going. Just one little reminder before I run out of space. If you have an area of your lawn that you want to start or thicken up, consider “dormant seeding”. The idea is to wait until the weather gets so cold that there is no chance of grass seed sprouting (but before the snow falls) and apply grass seed. This may sound crazy to you but here’s the idea. Your late application of grass seed will lie out there all winter without sprouting. Snow and rain will beat the seed down through the grass blades to the surface of the soil. Since the seed will be soaking all winter, it will sprout with the first warm weather next spring. Don’t worry about the freezing weather harming the grass seed. Grass grown in a natural state (not mowed) would grow tall and produce a crop of seed. This seed would then fall to the ground and sprout the following spring. We mow our lawns so the grass plants never get the chance to produce a crop of seed. By adding seed late in the season, you’re providing that crop. It’s an easy way to thicken thin areas without having to waste time in the spring dragging hoses around trying to keep the seed moist. Try it…it works.
