Studio tunes to special talents

COLONIE — Christopher Harrison, 16, likes the sound of the piano and the joy it can give others, particularly when playing Christmas music.

To Matthew Preston, 15, the piano is full of fresh ideas and for Anna Maple, 20, the piano makes her happy, especially playing songs from her well-loved “Hamilton” music book.

The trio has taken lessons from Dee Cucinotta for seven, 11 and 13 years, respectively, at Creative Harmonies Music Studios in Latham.

The studio, which specializes in piano lessons for children and adults with learning difficulties, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month.

I

both her home studio and, as her students got older, the studio’s original name, Piano for Special Kidz. She can now see up to 30 students a week.

“When it was time for me to open up my own studio, I wanted it to be exclusively for the needs of children that have issues in other studios,” Cucinotta said.

The current studio, tucked in a suite along Avis Drive near Exit 6 on the Northway, has a lobby sparsely decorated to minimize distractions. The walls are painted a neutral cream, and the lighting is soft. A white noise machine tucked under a table muffles chatter in the lobby as Harrison, Preston and Maple go to the piano in an adjacent room to play a hymn, a jazz standard and a bit of “Dear Theodosia” from “Hamilton.”

Cucinotta also offers the option of virtual lessons.

Unlike a music therapist, who would use piano playing to help address behavioral or cognitive issues, Cucinotta is focused on the students’ enjoyment. Improvements on attention span, fine motor skills or memory will come, but only if the students like the lessons. That means standard method books are replaced with what interests the students, be it musical theater, classical, jazz standards or, in Preston’s case, the Nintendo Super Mario video game series scores.

“That’s the incredible thing about taking lessons here because Dee lets them play what they want to play,” Preston’s mom, Charity, said.

Cucinotta taught special music education on Long Island before moving upstate. When her neighbor’s daughter, who had struggled with her piano teacher, found success working with Cucinotta, her neighbor suggested she start a studio for children with learning disabilities, something the region lacked.

Word spread through ads in Penny-Savers, word-of-mouth, public recitals and social media. Cucinotta’s program eventually outgrew

Cucinotta’s background in music and special education, and as a mother of a daughter who was diagnosed with ADHD later in life, helps her connect with the students and with anxious parents and guardians looking for a safe space for their children.

“I really understand where their thinking is, where their concerns are, what their worries are,” Cucinotta said. “It’s not just about piano

lessons.”

Twila, Harrison’s grandmother, found the studio by accident. She was looking for something that could help with a tremor Harrison had in his hands and saw the studio in the paper. By the time he was 9, his memory was strong enough to start lessons, she said. Now, seven years later, he’s performing recitals and learning classical pieces.

Cucinotta prepares her students for the idiosyncrasies of performing — playing through mistakes, learning how certain audiences might clap or sing along to standards — in addition to practicing the songs themselves.

For Harrison, sharing music with others is the best part of playing live.

“It gives me happiness when (the people in the audience) go home because they’ll think it in their head and sing it,” he said. “It’s fun when they go off and see how happy we made them. They’ll remember that for the rest of their life.”

For the last five years, Cucinotta has been building a network of music teachers through a virtual mentoring program. She works with six teachers across the country who want to teach students with disabilities, helping them navigate lessons through observation, feedback and advising.

“That’s my next 10 years,” she said. “It’s really important to me that part of the legacy of this is that other teachers are able to create it in their community and then spread it.”

Clifton Park Center is sold

Mall was purchased for $55 million, according to real estate company

CLIFTON PARK — Clifton Park Center, one of the largest retail properties in the Capital Region, has a new owner.

Longtime owner Donald Greene of DCG Development sold the mall for $55 million to CPC Development I, led by principal Faraz Khan, according to a release from RedMark Realty, which brokered the transaction.

The transaction closed Friday, Alexander Kutikov of RedMark Realty said.

The nearly 50-year-old property totals 630,000 square feet on more than 50 acres.

Greene purchased the mall in 2006 from GE Capital with hopes of reinventing the property: demolishing its former Steinbach department store, reorienting stores and making way for new retailers. Current anchors include JCPenney, Boscov’s, Regal Cinemas and Sky Zone Trampoline Park.

According to RedMark, the mall’s occupancy rate is 96 percent with a mix of national, regional and local retail including fashion tenants such Loft, Maurices, Lane Bryant and Shoe Department and restaurants including Olive Garden, Chipotle, Starbucks and Buffalo Wild Wings.

RedMark cited commercial real estate location analytics company Placer.ai as showing the center with more than 4.8 million visitors a year.

The news release noted that new neighbors in the town of Clifton Park will soon include a Chick-fil-A and a Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s.

The mall was built in 1976 by Buffalo-based developer Myron Hunt and had as its original anchors Steinbach, A&P grocery store and Mack Drugs, according to Red-Mark.

“Don Greene and I have been working together for some time to bring this deal to fruition,” Khan said in the release.

“In our opinion, Don Greene and DCG did extraordinary work transforming the former Clifton Country Mall into the Town Center that it is today.

“We hope to continue Mr. Greene’s vision and legacy by further developing the property in years to come.”

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Rotary Club,Camp Stomping Ground & Immersion Pt Host:

4 Seasons 4k Fun Run Events

BURNT HILLS - The second installment of the new fun run series, the 4 Season 4K, will take place on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at 10:00 am at Camp Stomping Ground (3430 Boyhaven Rd, Middle Grove NY). Community members, families and pets of all ages and abilities are welcome to run, walk or dance through the trails of Camp Stomping

Ground.

Megan James, owner of Immersion PT & coach of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake cross country & track teams, designed the fun run series as a way to inspire new runners, and foster appreciation for our natural spaces in a fun, family-friendly environment. “It will be spring in upstate New York, so we are hoping for a muddy run to kick off the season!” says James.

Laura Kriegel, Executive Director of Camp Stomping Ground, is excited to welcome the local

community to the property to highlight the rehabilitation work that has been done at camp since 2020, including the recently-completed renovation of the 1830’s farmhouse. “Camp is all about gathering and building community. We are looking forward to hosting this event and sharing this beautiful space with the local community,” says Kriegel. Proceeds from the events will go to BHBL Rotary Club, which supports many other local organizations and events, including Camp Stomping Ground, and Immersion PT’s “Team Teen” programming for young female athletes.

The new trail will tour through Camp Stomping Ground’s infrastructure, existing trails and the neighboring NYS Forest. Participants should note that trail runs in some areas are ungroomed so caution and surefootedness are advised. The spring run will also highlight maple syrup-based creations for post-run snacking, local maple syrup for sale, and non-traditional prizes, including one for the muddiest runner & the person who brings the “biggest squad” to the run. There will be no time-based, agegroup or overall placing awards at any of the events in this series.

Tickets to the event can be purchased through: https://campstompingground.org/4s4k

Note: In the event of extreme weather or extenuating circumstances, the race will be postponed to Saturday, April 8 at 10:00am. Updates will be posted on our registration page.

The Basics of Soyfoods

When visiting a modern grocery store, consumers may recognize that their options are seemingly unlimited. Those options abound whether you typically visit a large chain grocery store with 20-plus aisles and expansive specialty sections or you tend to go to smaller stores that emphasize organics and other health foods.

Regardless of where consumers buy their food, soyfoods are one option they’re likely to encounter. Many people have undoubtedly encountered soyfoods, even if they didn’t realize it. For example, edamame is a commonly used soyfood that’s found in various recipes. In addition, a trip to the dairy aisle of a favored grocery store will likely lead to an encounter with soymilk. Given the ubiquitous nature of soyfoods, consumers may want to learn the basics of this widely available option.

What are soyfoods?

The United Soybean BoardTM notes that the term “soyfoods” refers to a broad category of soybean products that are consumed by humans. Foods that are in the category of soyfoods include tempeh, tofu, miso, soy milk, and soy-based meat alternatives.

How common are soyfoods?

Soyfoods are more common than consumers may realize. In fact, the Kansas Soybean Commission notes that individuals likely have soyfood products in their pantries even if they aren’t aware of that. Protein shakes and baking flour are two examples of foods that include soy ingredients.

How healthy are soyfoods?

First and foremost, anyone considering adding more soyfoods to their diets is urged to speak with a physician before doing so, as any dietary changes, however insignificant they may seem, are best adopted under the supervision of a physician. Physicians also can discuss the latest research into various types of foods, including soyfoods, with their patients.

In regard to the nutritional value of soyfoods, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health notes that there is debate regarding soyfoods. The school notes that nutritional scientists often tout the significant health benefits of soyfoods, but also points out that some research has indicated soy can have negative effects in certain situations. That’s led to some hesitancy regarding whether or not to recommend soyfoods without qualification. This debate underscores the need for people to discuss soyfoods with their physicians prior to altering their diets.

Sister Bodyworks

Soyfoods are considered rich in B vitamins, fiber, potassium, magnesium, and high-quality protein. However, the Chan School of Public Health notes that soy also can have estrogenic properties, which can affect hormone levels in the body. Since no two people are the same, the effects of soyfoods on the body figure to be different among individuals as well. Research studying the effects of soyfoods on human health is ongoing, which is another reason why it’s so important to discuss soyfoods without a physician before changing a diet.

Soyfoods are available at many different grocery stores. Such foods are worthy of consideration and discussion with a qualified healthcare professional.

How to Handle a Lengthy Renovation

The global pandemic reignited people’s passions for home renovations, as they directed dollars that would normally have been spent elsewhere into the places where they were now spending the most time — their homes. According to the 10th annual Houzz & Home survey of more than 70,000 respondents in the United States, higher-budget projects cost around $85,000 or more in 2020, compared with $80,000 in the two years prior. Kitchen projects were the most popular among renovating homeowners.

Even though many COVID-19-related restrictions have lifted and life has largely returned to regular programming, renovations remain a popular investment. Homeowners embarking on home renovation projects understand that a certain measure of upheaval is to be expected, but some may not fully anticipate the impact that renovations have on daily life. The following are some tips for making it through a lengthy renovation.

• Discuss the timeline with contractors. It may be easier to make a plan for how much life will be disrupted if you have an idea of how long the renovation will be (if everything goes according to plan). Sit down with contractors and have them spell out the minutiae of the project so you’ll be able to anticipate what’s going on day-to-day.

• Start at the right time.

Some contractors may say they can fit your project into their schedules in between other jobs. While this may seem convenient and timely, your work may be put on hold if there are delays with the other job or jobs. Instead, it may be better to hold off until the contractors can devote the bulk of their attention to your renovation.

• Recreate commonly used spaces elsewhere. A kitchen or a bathroom remodel often requires giving up spaces that are used throughout a typical day. Unless you have a spare full bathroom or kitchen, you’ll need to make due. Set a microwave, tabletop electric burner and a coffee pot on a folding table in the garage or utility room. Rent or purchase a small refrigerator where you can store a few necessities. Ask your contractor to set up a makeshift outdoor shower so you have a place to get clean when the bathroom is under construction.

• Pack up and cover. Remodeling one room may cause a trickle down effect on other areas. Dust from drywall sanding can infiltrate many rooms in the home. Pack and label boxes with items not immediately needed and store them in another area. Cover most things so a film of dust won’t form on them.

• Adjust your schedule. Sleeping in will be a thing of the past for the duration of the renovation, as may

be working from a home office. Try to get out of the work zone as much as possible for new scenery and respites from the noises and smells.

• Ease up on cleaning standards. It’s challenging to keep a home clean during a renovation. Relax standards and expect a mess for some time. Explain to guests what they’ll find if they drop by.

Renovations can disrupt life, but often are well worth the sacrifices homeowners must make to see them through to completion.
