Re-election bid announcement stuns board At town board meeting, Desso rallies base, says he’ll run for third term By KENNETH C. CROWE II

Supervisor Lou Desso turned Thursday’s monthly Town Board meeting into a political rally to announce he’s running for a third term next year, stunning the three other board members who said they had never seen anything like it. In the wake of a Times Union investigation, State Police investigators are examining Desso for potential ethical lapses connected to matters such as a sewer extension

The Big Lots store on Columbia Turnpike in East Greenbush will likely shut its doors after the Christmas season. Employees at the discount retailer said that the landlord has informed the company that it will not renew the lease and that the store will be closing its doors in January. Big Lots officials did not respond to a request for comment. There are other Big Lots stores in Troy, Colonie and Clifton Park. Tracy Rex Reports to the People of Schodack I believe staying in touch with constituents is an important part of serving in elective office. This monthly report is an example of my commitment to keeping residents informed of the activities of the Schodack Town Board. All Town Board meetings can be viewed live or at a later date on my Facebook page at www. facebook.com/TRexFor Schodack. During October, the Town Board held a series of budget meetings to

review and discuss the 2019 Tentative Budget for the Town of Schodack. Department heads did a great job of outlining and itemizing their recommended expenditures and appropriations for the upcoming year. The Town Board also adopted the Town of Schodack Personnel Policy and Procedure Manual that will take effect on January 1, 2019. Great news -- the new playground will be installed at the Schodack Town Park in November. The inclusive playground will provide children and families with a safe and enjoyable place to play for years to come. I believe the work of a Town Board member goes beyond attending meetings and casting votes on resolutions. To me, it is also important to be actively engaged in our community, attending events, and supporting local organizations and good causes. Despite inclement weather, it was nice to see so many people in attendance at the 30th Annual Goold Orchard Annual Apple Festival and Craft

Show. There was a great turnout at the 3rd Annual Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Fair held at the Doane Stuart School in Rensselaer during October. There were more than 50 exhibitors and 23 workshop presenters on hand to provide information on topics such as solar energy and composting. Thank you to SNYFGP for organizing this important community event. I was honored to speak to the 4th grade students at Castleton Elementary School about women in politics and the voting process. This bright and engaging group of students asked terrific questions, such a credit to our dedicated teachers working at CES.

DESSO

lin condemned Desso on Twitter: “Using a town board meeting as a campaign event to announce re-election and stacking the audience to build up a fragile ego is not only shamelessly unethical, it’s weak,” he wrote. McLaughlin and Desso have been at odds since last year’s Republican primary, when Desso backed former Deputy County Executive Chris Meyer in his unsuccessful bid to take the top job. During the meeting, Desso and building inspector Michael Minor tried to blame the town’s failure to notify the county about sewer hookups on county officials, charging its departments had failed to talk to each other. The county sewer district staff has identified unreported hookups, including the ShopRite store on Route 4. Minor said the county was informed in 2011 about the property being on the tax rolls. The grocery store wasn’t built and opened until 2017. McLaughlin tweeted that Desso blaming the county for the town’s failure to report sewer connections “is what passes for logic in ‘Lets (sic) Make a Deal De$$0’ land.” The members of the Town Board -- which is dominated by Republicans -- sat stonefaced through Desso’s announcement. Board meetings are often lightly attended, but at least 65 people turned out for Thursday’s session, many of them Desso supporters. “I don’t think this is an appropriate place for him to be announcing his candidacy,” said Councilwoman Mary Frances Sabo, a Democrat. “I was surprised, very surprised that he would do this,” said Councilman Joseph Bott, a Republican who had considered running next year for supervisor. “Lou is Lou. He’s not going to change.” “I’ve never seen this,” said Councilwoman Kelly Hoffman, a Conservative. “I’m going to talk to him about it.” kcrowe@timesunion.com - 518-454-5084 - @KennethCrowe CONTINUED FROM 3

Agency has been working with a local developer that wants to spend $15.5 million renovating the property to house a state worker CONTINUED FROM 3 training center that would bring in potentially hundreds of workers weekly to the site. The project could likely lead to other new tenants and perhaps add additional retail space. Although Big Lots has not announced the closure, an attorney for the landlord, known as Turnpike Redevelopment Group, wrote to the Rensselaer County Industrial Devel opment Agency back in June saying that the project scope had changed to include the Big Lots space as well. The letter said the developer was planning a “retenanting” of the Big Lots space and that such a change would add about $1 million to the cost of the project. “At this time, applicant does not have a tenant for the Big Lots space,” attorney Debra Lambek wrote to Bob Pasinella of the Renssealer County IDA. “The Big Lots space can be used for retail or warehouse or commercial.” Turnpike Redevelopment Group purchased the strip mall in January for $3 million. Property and bank loan records show that Turnpike Redevelopment Group’s managing member is Stephen Obermayer, chief financial officer at BBL Construction, which is also the general contractor on what is now a $16.5 million project. TD Bank provided the group with $12 million in financing, bank records show. Others listed on the loan document are Brian Hart and a limited liability company with the same address as BBL. The state training facility is expected to bring in hundreds of social services workers to Rensselaer County each week who otherwise wouldn’t be there. It’s expected they will spend money on hotels, food and gas in the area. The Rensselaer County IDA has offered Turnpike Redevelopment Group a tax package that includes $360,000 in sales tax breaks and a $138,750 mortgage recording tax exemption. The IDA also negotiated a 15-year payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement that will save the developer tens of thousands of dollars annually on its property tax bill, although the exact savings is unclear.

Rensselaer County needs YOU! The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) for Rensselaer County is seeking new volunteers, both with and without any medical experience, to supplement the county’s health department staff in times of crisis. The MRC was instituted by the federal government’s Department of Health and Human Services following the attacks on 9/11. It is a national, county-based program for deploying volunteers to everything from weath-

er-related catastrophes to disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies. When a public health situation calls for the over 158,000 residents of Rensselaer County to be vaccinated against disease or other threats within 48 hours, the county conducts POD operations (Points of Dispensing) at several strategic locations throughout the county, administering state-provided antidotes. We still need people with backgrounds as doctors, nurses, surgeons, pharmacists, EMTs and paramedics, but we also need dentists, social workers, veterinarians, clergy, funeral home directors, law enforcement and people like YOU, who can work a laptop, phone bank, do greeting, parking and traffic control, be a runner and many other jobs. Free training in many important areas and lifesaving skills is provided. For more information, or to register, contact MRC Coordinator, Sal Scecchitano at 518 270-2633, or email sscecchitano@ rensco.com.

This week’s scholar athlete is Eamon Finnerty. Eamon plays on the Boys Varsity Golf team and Varsity Lacrosse team. Eamon was introduced to golf at a young age when his father taught him the sport. Eamon has played the sport ever since and began playing for Averill Park in ninth grade. Now in his senior year, Eamon played his fourth year for Averill Park. Eamon says the most challenging aspect of golf is the struggle to “create a good swing, and then replicating it every time you approach the ball.” This year, Eamon faced this challenge as he had issues with his swing. “My scores increased dramatically, and I could barely control the ball. I spent hours in practice and at the driving range working out the problems with my swing. Finally, near the end of the season, I began to figure things out and my scores began to drop.” Eamon’s hard work was recognized at the Golf team banquet, where Eamon was awarded an Athletic Achievement Award. Eamon’s hard work is not only seen on the green, but in the classroom as well. Eamon has maintained a GPA of above 95 throughout his high school career. This achievement becomes even more impressive with the challenging course load Eamon has carried each year. In his senior year alone, Eamon is taking three Advanced Placement courses: AP Calculus, AP Government and Policy, and AP Environmental Science. In order to balance his difficult schedule, Eamon says, “I make use of the study halls I have and get as much work done in them as I can. This allows me to spend more time practicing for golf and lacrosse after school.” Through his efforts in high school, Eamon was accepted into the National Honor Society this Fall. In his future, Eamon plans to attend college, then medical school in order to become a surgeon. Eamon’s work ethic has allowed him to succeed in his sport, but he has received help from others to help him improve. He says, “my uncle was the first person to significantly help me with my golf swing. My dad has also given me several pieces of advice to help me excel.” Along with his family, Eamon looks to his teammates for motivation; “my teammates inspire me to do well in both golf and lacrosse. I don’t want to let them down.” Eamon is clearly ready for his career after high school, we all wish him the best in his future.

Deer Season He set his alarm clock right after dinner, So he wouldn’t forget to do it later on. And then he checked it three times Before he went to bed at 8:30. He would sleep fitfully and dream much On this most special of nights. More than deer taken, he would dream of His hunting companions: family and friends. He would relive hunts with the Old Man and his brothers, And wake to recheck that alarm one more time. He would remember his best friend’s first deer

And those of his son and grandsons. He would savor, again, sausage and gravy breakfasts And tailgate snacks of his delectable hunter’s biscuits. He would review his plans for the morrow, Making sure that he had properly readied his gear. He would sleep little and check that alarm often; He would get very little rest this night. But, come morning, he will be up early, Energized and raring to go. For, tomorrow is… OPENING DAY!!! ~Lloyd Barnhart, West Sand Lake

A lot has changed since Hudson Valley Community College built its original manufacturing training center in 1953. Now, the college is creating a $17 million center where students will learn to use the latest, computer-controlled equipment expected to power American factories into the future. When it opens in September 2019, the new 37,000-square-foot, two-story Gene Haas Center for Advanced Manufacturing Skills will be seven times larger than the college’s current training facility, said David Larkin, professor of advanced manufacturing technology in the School of Engineering and Industrial Technologies at HVCC. Last week, Larkin showed the new center to representatives from some of the 21 private companies that are providing new production equipment. Russell Sage College looking to turn co-ed 102-year-old women’s school might admit male students By: RICK KARLIN

Confronting a need to consolidate operations and simplify recruitment, Russell Sage College, founded as a women’s school in 1916, may be going co-ed. “We’ll become a single co-educational institution,” Sage Colleges President Christopher Ames said. “I’m excited about it.” The co-ed proposal was approved by the board of trustees in October and it includes a reorganization of the multiple schools and names that are now operating under The Sage Colleges heading, which includes Russell Sage College and Sage College of Albany. Planners are now formalizing the reorganization outline which should be done in early 2019. The changes could take effect in the fall of 2020. The schools are technically set up as the women’s Russell Sage College in Troy and the co-ed Sage College of Albany. Students apply to the schools separately but, once enrolled, can take classes at either campus, which can be confusing. There is one board of directors for both schools. The overall female-to-male ratio is 73 percent to 27 percent, but that has been changing. Among new students in 2018, for instance, it’s 68 percent female to 32 percent male. Currently, 24 percent of Sage College of Albany students pursue majors on the Troy campus, while 6 percent of Russell Sage College students take majors in Albany. There also are graduate schools in nursing and allied health sciences like physical therapy as well as in education and business. The plans come as Sage struggles with a junk bond rating and steep competition for students. Moody’s Investor Services, which gave the school a Caa1 bond rating in May, cited increased competition for students and the school’s unwieldy administrative structure as one of its challenges. Both the Troy and Albany campuses have dormitories. But the change would mean opening the Troy dorms to men. (Currently, a handful of male students in Troy who attend the school’s theater program live in the dorms there). Ames conceded that the move will likely be controver-

sial with some Russell Sage alumnae who are proud of the school’s heritage as a women’s institution. But in addition to confusion, Ames said Russell Sage College has in recent years suffered from what, with some exceptions, has been the long-term national decline in demand for exclusively women’s colleges. “Women’s colleges have been incredibly valuable but the market for them has diminished,” Ames said. At the same time, planners are also looking at the creation of an as-yet-unnamed women’s institute at the school that would allow exploration of topics like the #MeToo movement and related gender issues, and which could contain a women’s residence hall. Russell Sage dates to 1916 when a noted Troy philanthropist and suffragist, Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage, created the school for women. The first class graduated four years later. The school enrolled men during World War II in order to support the war effort, however. By 1949, the school opened a co-ed division in Albany. Then in 1957, the co-ed Junior College of Albany opened. It became a four-year school in 2001 operating as Sage College of Albany. Overall, The Sage Colleges this year saw an enrollment increase of about 200 students, including transfers and first-year students, bringing the total incoming class to 570. Total undergraduate enrollment is 1,350, with 1,200 graduate students, including part-timers. Ames attributed the growth to a refocusing of recruitment efforts on in-state students. He said some 70 percent of college students nationally attend school within three hours of their home towns. If Sage changes its name, it would not be the first Capital Region school to re-brand itself. Schenectady County Community College recently began marketing itself as SUNY Schenectady. While the official name remains the same, one reason for the change is that the old acronym, SCCC was similar to two other community colleges, Sullivan County Community College and Suffolk County Community College, said marketing director David White. Overall, he said the school went through a two-year review of its branding and identity. rkarlin@timesunion.com - 518-454-5758

School roof project before Troy voters Voters in the Troy school district go to the polls on Dec. 4 to decide on a $3.85 million roof replacement project at the High School. The proposal will have no additional impact on taxpayers, according to district officials. The Board of Education voted unanimously last month to hold a public vote on the project to replace the portion of the roof over the classrooms. If approved, work would start in the summer. The board also authorized an emergency project to replace the roof over the gyms. This project is currently under way as authorized by the state Education Department. The district is asking the public to authorize spending $577,500 from the capital reserve fund. The remaining $3.2 million will be borrowed in the form of a bond. The

OMMUNITY Giving Thanks to Our Fresh Air Families This November, we thank families in the Albany Area for opening their hearts and home to Fresh Air children. Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s low-income communities visit suburban, rural and small-town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. By volunteering as a host family for summer 2019, the spirit of Thanksgiving can continue in your home throughout the year. Fresh Air children are boys and girls who live in New York City. Children who are re-invited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Volunteer host families frequently share how they rediscover the beauty of their own communities through the eyes of Fresh Air children. For more information about hosting a Fresh Air child next summer, please contact Tenniel Hansen at 518-4414407 or visit www.freshair.org.

INSURANCE CORNER Is It Time To Bundle Up?

It’s definitely me to bundle up when you walk outside and it can also be a good idea to bundle your insurance coverage. Many insurance carriers give significant discounts when you get home and auto insurance together. Why? They can afford to give big discounts because they save money in the process of considering you for a policy. That review process, called underwring, looks at many of the same factors for home/renters and auto insurance so they only have to do the analysis once. They pass that savings onto you. Bundling may not make sense with the company you are with now and that’s where an independent insurance agent can help. We can review many companies to find the best deal, price AND service for your parcular situaon.

Contact us at the Warner & Foley Insurance Agency for all these answers and more. We are an independent insurance agency located in West Sand Lake for over 20 years. We can help with all your home, auto & business insurance needs.

Give thanks for good health by giving blood or platelets The American Red Cross urges people to share their good health this holiday season by donating blood or platelets for patients in need. A decline in donations occurs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day when donors are busy with holiday activities and travel. However, medical treatments and emergencies that require blood don’t stop for the holidays. The Red Cross is thanking those who carve out time to give Nov. 21-24 with a long-sleeved T-shirt, while supplies last. By giving blood or platelets, donors may give patients more time – and more holidays – with loved ones. Make an appointment to donate blood or platelets by downloading the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Another way to help keep the blood supply strong this winter is to host a Red Cross blood drive in December, January or February. To learn more about hosting a blood drive and to sign up, visit RedCrossBlood.org/HostA Drive. HEALTH & FITNESS How to make your favorite foods healthier After the whirlwind of the holiday season, the season of resolutions takes over. Many people to resolve to live healthier, and they may not have to give up their favorite foods to do so.

• Tone down the cream. Delicious dishes like fettuccine alfredo typically are made with lots of butter and cream. Replace cream sauces with a healthier base made of low-fat milk thickened with flour. Increase the flavor with favorite spices. • Fry with care. Use healthy oils like olive or coconut sparingly. Many foods that are traditionally fried also can be lightly coated with cooking spray and baked for a crunchy texture. • Choose sodium-free seasonings. The USCA recommends limiting sodium to less than 1 teaspoon of salt per day. Try options like fresh herbs or lemon juice to add some sodium-free flavor. • Increase fiber content. Fiber helps one feel fuller longer and can also be helpful for digestion and heart health. Choose the “brown” varieties of rice, pasta and breads. • Replace meat with leaner forms of protein. Lean chicken, turkey and pork can replace red meats in many recipes. Some traditional meat dishes, such as burgers, also can be modified using vegetables or seafood. Lean meats dry out quickly, so keep foods moist by watching cooking times. • Stock up on yogurt. Greek and other varieties of yogurt can replace sour cream and mayonnaise in many dishes. Resolving to eat healthier can be easy by making some simple swaps when preparing your favorite foods.

Research from the National Institutes of Health suggests American adults between the ages of 18 and 49 gain an average of one to two pounds every year. Grazing and overeating tends to increase when the weather cools down. A 2005 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that, in the fall, people tend to consume more calories, total fat and saturated fat. In the spring, people seem to prefer more carbohydrates. In addition, less powerful sunshine in winter coupled with people bundling up translates into less vitamin D being absorbed by the body. Some researchers believe there is a link between vitamin D deficiency and weight gain as well. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR It’s Dot-to-Dot, Not 3-D Chess It’s really pretty simple. Trump knows what he (and family) did. He knows what his vulnerabilities are, his liabilities and risks. And has known since 2016. From Watergate he learned that the press, an FBI leaker, the Justice Department, action by the courts, and Congressional investigators could synergize to bring down a president. From the Clinton impeachment he also learned that testifying under oath presents a risk, as well. So, what does he do? Simple. How to save up for your first home Home ownership is a dream for people across the globe. Many people save for years before buying their first homes, squirreling away every dollar they can with the hopes they can one day become homeowners. But thanks to factors beyond their control, even the most devoted savers can sometimes feel like their dream of home ownership may never come true. According to the Pew Research Center, American workers’ paychecks are larger than they were 40 years ago, but their purchasing power is essentially the same. Things aren’t much different in Canada, where analysis from Statistics Canada and the Bank of Canada has shown that, since 2015, wage growth in Canada has been weaker than in the United States. Various challenges can make it difficult to buy a home. However, some simple strategies can help prospective home buyers build their savings as they move closer to the day when they can call themselves “homeowners.” • Determine where your money is going. If you’re finding it hard to grow your savings, audit your monthly expenses to determine where your money is going. Using exclusively debit or credit cards can simplify this process, as all you need to do is log into your accounts and see how your money was spent over a given period. If you routinely use cash to pay for items, even just to buy coffee on the way to work, keep a notepad handy so you can jot down each expense. Do this for a month and then examine how you spent your money. Chances are you will see various ways to save, and you can then redirect that money into your savings account. • Become a more savvy grocery shopper. Another great way to save more money is to alter something you already do each month: grocery shopping. If you haven’t already, sign up for discount clubs at your local grocer. This is a largely effortless way for shoppers, especially those buying food for families, to save considerable amounts of money. Shopping sales at competing grocery stores also can save money. • Dine in more often. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that Americans spend, on average, 6 percent of their household budgets on food. However, the USDA also notes that Americans spend 5 percent of their disposable income on dining out. If these figures mirror your spending habits, you can nearly cut your food spending in half by dining out less frequently. That might be a sacrifice for foodies, but it can get you that much closer to buying your own home. Saving enough money to purchase your first home is a worthy effort that can be made easier by employing a few budget-friendly strategies.

EMPLOYMENT HELP WANTED

Pros and cons to early retirement A lifetime of working compels many people to look forward to their retirement. Some people even work to retire early. But what are the advantages of early retirement beyond starting a life of leisure? And are there any detriments to this plan? A 2014 survey by the financial services provider TIAA-CREF found that 37 percent of Americans plan to retire before age 65. However, many of them will not have control over the matter. Those who do may want to consider the pros and cons of early retirement. Advantages Many people seek early retirement so that they can live a life free of the constraints of schedules. In retirement, time becomes, more or less, a retiree’s own. Leaving a job can be a boon to a person’s health as well. Relieving oneself of the pressures and stresses of professional life can free up the mind and body. Stress can affect mental and physical health, taxing the heart and contributing to conditions such as depression or anxiety. According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can cause headache, muscle and chest pain and contribute to trouble sleeping. The earlier the retirement, the more opportunity to travel before health issues begin to limit mobility. Early retirement also can be a way to volunteer more or even start a new job opportunity — one where workers have greater control over their schedules and careers. Disadvantages One of the disadvantages of early retirement is a loss of income. Contributions to retirement accounts also ceases at retirement. This can lead to financial setbacks if adequate savings were not allocated for retirement. According to the resource Wealth How, some people who retire early fear outliving their savings. While retiring early may be good for health, it also can have negative consequences. An analysis from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that retirement can lead to declines in mental health and mobility as well as feelings of isolation. Retiring early may jump start these health implications. Another consideration is that health insurance provided by an employer typically ends at retirement. That means having to pay out of pocket until a person ages into government-subsidized healthcare, such as Medicare in the United States, at age 65. Retiring early is a complex issue that requires weighing the pros and cons.

Change jobs without burning bridges A new year invites people to reflect on the past and make changes or set goals for the months ahead. Many people list advancing their careers among their goals at the dawn of a new year. For some, that might require getting a new job. People look for new jobs for a variety of different reasons. One of the primary motivators to look for a new job is to earn more money. Others are interested in trying a new field. The employment recruiting and networking resource The Balance: Careers indicates that the average person now changes jobs 10 to 15 times in their professional lives. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that most people now spend 4.2 years in a current job, which is down from 4.6 years in 2014. Although some people may be tempted to leave a job with a bang, they should exit with class and professionalism. No one knows what the

future brings, and it’s best to leave a job on solid terms. With this in mind, here’s how a person can change jobs successfully. • Draft a letter of resignation. Clearly communicate your decision to leave the organization. Follow the proper chain of command and show respect by addressing the person to whom you directly report. Clearly communicate your intent and future plans, highlighting when changes are expected to take place. • Choose the right time. Timing is everything, and some times are better for leaving a job than others. Project Management, a consultant group, says to wait until important projects are finished, rather than bailing out in the middle of crucial work. • Keep an open mind. Some employers may be blindsided by an employee’s desire to leave, particularly in cases when said employee never communicated with a supervisor about the desire for more responsibility or to discuss something that may not be working. A boss who respects your work and values you as an asset may make a counter-offer. Hear him or her out and weigh your options. • Give plenty of notice. While two weeks’ notice is the norm, leaving more time for an employer to find your replacement, and helping to train this individual, is a sure sign of respect for your current employer. Changing jobs can be stressful and awkward, but it can be done in a way to ensure good relations with an existing employer for years to come.

For dessert, we will be serving chocolate or vanilla pudding. Our Fellowship Hall welcomes all individuals. We are located at the intersection of Routes 7 & 278 in Center Brunswick. AMARYLLIS

This is the time of year to start Amaryllis bulbs for flowers to enjoy when winter days are at their shortest and living flowers outside are still months away. Nothing brightens up a winter home like giant Amaryllis flowers. Amaryllis flowers range in color from pure white to wine red and every variation in between. Banded, striped and bordered have been developed, transforming an already striking plant into an extraordinary specimen indeed! It isn’t uncommon for the flower spike to rise 2 1/2’ above the top of the bulb and produce flowers 7” across...a real show stopper!! Amaryllis brightens a winter day. If you’re thinking of purchasing one for someone (or for yourself), be aware that Amaryllis bulbs offered can vary greatly in size....and size does make a difference! The bigger the bulb, the more flowers your get. When you’re ready to plant your Amaryllis bulb, inspect the bottom and remove any dead roots. Dead roots will be withered and dry. The pot you choose should seem too small for the bulb. It should only be an inch or two wider than the widest part of the bulb. Plant so that 1/2 to 1/3 of the bulb is exposed above the soil and water thoroughly. Size mattters, so go large. Place your potted Amaryllis in a warm spot (on top of the refrigerator works for me). Don’t water it again until you notice the flower stem starting to emerge from the top of the bulb. This will take some time so be patient. When a shoot emerges it’s time to move your Amaryllis to a bright location. Keep the soil lightly moist (not soggy wet). The flower spike will grow very quickly with noticeable growth each day. When the huge flowers open, you may want to move Potted up and ready to go. your Amaryllis to a cooler location (as low as 50 degrees) to prolong the show of flowers. After the flowers are spent, cut off the flower stem. By now leaves have probably started to emerge from the bulb. To get your Amaryllis to flower again, it’s important to promote this leaf growth. Think of the leaves as solar collectors that convert sunlight into energy that’s stored in the bulb for the next flowering cycle. Bright light (but not direct sun) is the source of next year’s flowers. Keep the Giant flowers. soil lightly moist and feed with a soluble plant food at half strength about every two or three weeks. The best way to strengthen your Amaryllis is to sink the pot in a semi-shady flowerbed outside when things warm up in midMay. Sink the pot into the soil so that the exposed part of the bulb is almost covered. In fall before frost, bring your Amaryllis inside and allow it to dry out completely. Keep dry and store at 60 to 65 degrees for at least a month. This dry storage period is necessary to stimulate your Amaryllis to begin its next growth cycle. Remember, Amaryllis like to be potbound, so leave it in the same size pot for two or three years. Thanks for the read.
