Thirst quencher

Nonalcoholic drink options growing in popularity By STEPHANIE GRAVALESE

Elissa Emery of Averill Park has been impacted by addiction from a young age. From the age of 5, she saw her mother battle addiction and later enter rehab, and learned early on what addiction can do to a person and to a family. She also knew she had a choice. “I can follow in the footsteps of my mom or Ican fight like hell to never let that overcome me.” As a young adult, Emery’s best friend also struggled with an addiction to heroin. As she was on the road to recovery, Emery and her friend had trouble finding aplace to go where alcohol wasn’t present. This challenge, along with witnessing her community being “significantly

impacted by addiction,” inspired Emery and her fiancé, Sarah Wehnau, to open Unbreakable Nutrition in West Sand Lake last August. The goal was to create a space to socialize without alcohol. “We felt like it was our job as acommunity, as business owners and as a human being really to just help end that stigma,” says Emery. There are many reasons that Americans choose not to drink alcohol, whether they are pregnant, in recovery from an addiction to alcohol or drugs or are “sober curious,” a concept popularized by writer Ruby Warrington. Regardless of the reason, there is data to suggest that there is a slow shift in how Americans relate to alcohol. Please see THIRST 8

Mental Health Psychological First Aid Everyone reacts differently to trauma. Emotional distress is not always as visible as physical injury, but it is just as painful and debilitating. After a disaster or traumatic event, the earlier you can assist someone in gaining a sense of calm and meeting their immediate needs, the better they can cope throughout their state of crisis. Join us at the Troy Public Library on Monday, August 19th at 5:00 pm for this Psychological First Aid training workshop that will give you the tools to make this possible. Avoiding long term struggles such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or unhealthy coping skills such as substance abuse, is the goal of this training. Recognizing when other people - caregivers, first responders or even ourselves may need a little extra help is also part of the discussion. This method does not require a professional to carry out the steps of care. The process can be learned and employed by anyone who can make direct contact with individuals affected by crisis. A resilient community is a healthy community! All participants will receive a certificate of completion. (This is a 2.5 hour training including hands on activities, video demonstrations and interactive scenarios with role play). Jennifer Lee is a certified instructor of Psychological First Aid (PFA) from the NYS Office of Mental Health, NYS Department of Health, UAlbany CPHP (Center of Public Health Preparedness) and UAlbany University at Albany School of Public Health. To register go to: https:// www.surveymonkey.com/r/SignUpTL This program is free and open to the public. The firm IWSR found in its 2018 U.S. Beverage Alcohol Review that alcohol consumption in the U. S. has declined for the second year in a row, citing a“slow-building trend of moderation or not drinking at all.” While you may not find sober bars in the Capital Region, there are options. From fermented beverages to spirit-free cocktails, bars and restaurants in the area are thinking about different ways to serve those to choose not to imbibe. The “nutrition club” as Emery calls it, is not limited to people in recovery -- drawing on a mix of families and high schools students and others, regardless of age, gender or income – and has become part of the Averill Park community. “Addiction doesn’t discriminate, and neither should we when aiding the recovery world.” The protein smoothies and energizing iced teas the restaurant serves have been catching on. “The Cool Cucumber is very light, very refreshing, or the Jolly Rancher,” says Emery of some of the more popular flavors. The Cool Cucumber is made with a base of lemon herbal tea and steviabased cucumber and blue raspberry flavors. The Jolly Rancher has a base of pomegranate green tea topped with stevia-based blue raspberry and grape flavors, layered on top of one another. Now that Emery and Wehnau have the staff, they are planning on offering summer activities and are open until 8 p.m. twice a week. “We’re going to play corn-hole and do all this stuff that typically people would associate alcohol with, but they’re going to be drinking teas and protein shakes,” says Emery. The owners are working on assisting in opening new locations, all independently owned in East Greenbush, North Greenbush, and Clifton Park and are planning for up to 12 sister locations. “I want people to know that at the end of the day, that no matter what, you can come into any one of our locations and I promise that you will be loved and you will be valued, and you will be appreciated,” says Emery. “And there is no judgment whatsoever. And I think that’s important for people to know.” CONTINUED FROM 3

Properties, acquired two vacant parcels totaling 115 acres for a total of $3.1 million. The town granted Scannell a permit on June 17 to begin site development work. Heavy construction vehicles first started creating new dirt roads for the trucks and other construction vehicles that would be working at the site. Then the real work started. “Over the following days, excavators and dump trucks began moving substantial volumes of earth around the site,” Williams said in a July 11 deposition. “They appeared to be leveling a portion of the site for future consideration. Other equipment began clearing brush and other vegetation from the site.” Williams’ deposition was filed with the Appellate Division as part of a motion by the neighborhood association to request an injunction against Scannell to stop the site work until its case can be decided. The Birchwood Association’s original lawsuit filed in state Supreme Court in Troy was dismissed earlier this year but is now under appeal. Williams said that by the last week of June and the first week of July, Scannell’s contractors started cutting down trees as well, even those she says were supposed to remain in place to create a natural wall between her backyard and the future Amazon warehouse. “Tree cutting has continued apace in the days since, often throughout the entire 12hour work day. Hundreds of trees were cut down on July 3, 2019 alone,” Williams said in her deposition. “Some of the cleared trees are among those that Scannell had previously assured me would be left in place to screen the warehouse and truck terminal from my home.” Town officials have declined to comment due to the pending litigation. Scannell also declined to comment through its spokeswoman, Andrea Martone. “Scannell has no comment at this time,” Martone told the Times Union on Friday. In another filing with the Appellate Division, lawyers for the Birchwood Association argue that the injunction is needed to prevent further environmental damage before its case can be decided. The Appellate Division has not ruled on the motion for the injunction. “Before these events, the site was undeveloped and featured mainly woodlands and an open cornfield,” John Privitera, an attorney for the Birchwood Association, wrote in a July 12 filing in the case. “That character is now being steadily lost, and (the association members) now seek to preliminarily enjoin this irreversible destruction pending the resolution of their appeal and the completion of an adequate environmental review process.” CONTINUED FROM 3

Dear Sand Lake Residents, Questions have been raised recently regarding the elimination of the Community Van program. Let me share the facts with you. The proposal to eliminate the Community Van program was included in the 2019 Town of Sand Lake Budget and first announced publicly on September 26, 2018 at the Town Board Workshop meeting. The meeting was open to the public, televised, and streamed online. There were an additional five public comment periods (October 10, October 17, October 31, November 7, and November 14) where the Town Board solicited comments related to the Budget. These meetings were also televised and streamed online. These budget hearings were also advertised in The Advertiser. There were no comments expressed at any of these public meetings regarding the Community Van. The Community Van program was officially terminated as of January 1, 2019. The 2019 Town of Sand Lake Budget, including the elimination of the Community Van program, was passed unanimously 5-0 on November 14, 2018. The factors leading to program elimination included: • The program suffered from a lack of participation, both from drivers and riders. By October 2019, the participation was down to one driver and one rider. • The Town Board communicated the issues associated with the lack of participation well before the proposed program elimination was announced. At every Town Board Business Meeting, Councilman Steve Beebie announced the need for more drivers and riders. At least five articles were placed in The Advertiser expressing the need for more drivers and participants. The Town’s Cable Access Channel also advertised the need for drivers and participants. • The Highway Department was concerned that the 2012 van was getting old. The van was recalled for safety repairs in 2018. The Highway Department recommended that a new van be considered for purchase within the next 2-3 years. The current van was purchased in 2012 at a cost of $41,192. • The van was sold through public auction for $15,100. The money is earmarked for the Highway Department to use as part of a down payment on a new tandem truck. • It was apparent that other transportation services were available to our Town residents. Family, neighbors, and friends already provide the bulk of rides for medical needs. Rensselaer County provides transportation for Veterans and Medicaid-eligible citizens. The increased availability of ride-sharing services is another means of transportation. • Volunteers are covered under the Town’s liability insurance. However, drivers were not required to have health physicals or CPR training. These deficiencies increase the Town’s liability. However, the implementation of safety measures would undoubtedly lower the number of volunteers, and if paid for by the Town, would increase costs. In addition, our Highway Department staff, who operate machinery, are subject to random drug tests. Consideration would have to be given whether the volunteer drivers would be required to submit to random drug tests. Our liability insurance provider had great reservations about the program because of these issues. If it continued, changes would have been required to lessen the town’s liability. The elimination of the Community Van program was a difficult decision but necessary given its problems. The Town Board must adhere to sound fiscal prudence. I am willing to participate in efforts to create a new program if we can overcome these issues, primarily by demonstrating sufficient need and ensuring an adequate supply of volunteer drivers. Nancy Perry - Town Supervisor

Veterans To Exhibit Award-Winning Vietnam War Photos During Celebrate Stephentown On Saturday, August 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the Veterans of Stephentown will present an exclusive exhibit of images taken during the Battle of Hue in 1968 by former U.S, Army combat photographer John Olson, who currently lives in Chatham. Young Men At War: Remembering the Tet Offensive will feature a transformative collection of 20 large-format prints, taken directly from the groundbreaking 50th anniversary exhibit, The Marines And Tet, which recently ran for 15 months at The Newseum in Washington, D.C. Presented here in the setting of Stephentown Veterans Memorial Park, these award-winning images will be displayed outdoors next to the monuments honoring those who risked their lives in the United States Armed Forces. “These photographs are very impactful,” explains Dennis Burek, the event’s organizer. “They’re a poignant reminder of what the young men and women from Stephentown and across this country experienced 50 years ago during their service in Vietnam and they make me appreciate that service and sacrifice even more. We believe our Memorial Park is a perfect setting to remember, reflect on and cognize the reality of war.” Admission is free with donations accepted. FDA Issues Nationwide Advisory on Imported Basil from Siga Logistics The State Department of Agriculture and Markets and the Department of Health today urged New Yorkers to not eat fresh basil imported from Siga Logistics S. de R.L de C.V of Mexico following the release of the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) nationwide advisory, which has potentially linked the herb to cases of Cyclosporiasis illness in New York and other states. The FDA is advising consumers who have basil in their home that originated from this distributor to not eat it and throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick. The FDA is also urging retailers and restaurants not to serve or sell basil from the company until further notice. Cyclosporiasis is a gastrointestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. People can become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite. Outbreaks of Cyclosporiasis have often been associated with imported fresh produce.

Illness typically results in watery diarrhea, and can include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea and fatigue. These symptoms can appear approximately 1-2 weeks after ingestion of the contaminated source. If untreated, symptoms can last as long as one month or longer and can return one or more times. Infection is generally not transmitted directly from person-to-person.

pike, one can see we are an old, historic cemetery in the Town of East Greenbush. However, we are still active and offering lots sales for a reasonable cost in three new sections. With lifestyle changes in a more mobile culture, our cemetery is suffering financially. Lot sales are way down and more cremations are being done rather than burials. Cemeteries are forced to rely on donations to keep operating. The Greenbush Cemetery estimates the operating cost for 2019 is $20,000.00. We will need to raise $15,000.00 to stay operational for this year. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to help maintain this historic cemetery in East Greenbush. The Greenbush Cemetery Board of Trustees (all volunteers) will be most appreciative! We will publicly list you as a donor unless you wish to remain anonymous. Please make checks payable to: Greenbush Cemetery Association. Please mail checks to Jim Finke, Treasurer, 13 Horizon View Drive West, East Greenbush, NY 12061. For more information, contact: Bobbie Reno 518465-7938. Thank you.

The Half Moon Button Club The Half Moon Button Club will meet on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, at the Bethlehem Public Library, 451 Delaware Avenue, Delmar 12054. The social time starts at 11:00 a.m. and the business meeting starts at 12:00 noon followed by the program, which will be presented by Kirsti Gariepy on creating polymer clay buttons. Bring a bag lunch. Dessert will be provided. For more information call Lisa at 518-469-7420 or Kirsti at 518-869-8125. Everyone is welcome!

DEC Asks Public to Report Moose Sightings The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is asking the public to report moose sightings and observations. DEC and its research partners use these public sightings as indices of moose distribution and abundance in New York. This is part of a multi-year research project to obtain information on the status of New York State’s moose population, health of the moose, and the factors that influence moose survival and reproductive rate. Most moose sightings occur within the Adirondacks, but neighboring states Connecticut and Massachusetts also have moose populations, resulting in observations in the southeast portion of New York. The moose, a protected mammal in New York State, is the largest member of the deer family and the largest land mammal in New York. Bulls weigh from 600 to 1,200 pounds and stand up to six feet tall at the shoulder. Cows weigh anywhere from 500 to 800 pounds. DEC reminds the public to respect wildlife by viewing from a distance, at least 50 feet away. Keep quiet, move slowly, and do not approach moose. Drive cautiously at dusk and at night in the Adirondacks. Have you seen a moose? Let DEC know by reporting your observations using the online form. Share your moose encounters by mailing in or e-mailing your GETTY IMAGE photos to us.

Lake Placid 9er can be High Peaks prelude ByLINE: HERB TERNS OUTDOORS

On Baxter Mountain in the Adirondack High Peaks, I caught a moment I had been chasing for a while. Just a few breaths after sunrise, I saw the morning mist swirl in the valley below while the mountains beyond rose like islands in a white ocean. For a few moments, Iwas the man in Caspar David Friedrich’s “Wanderer above the Sea of Fog.” It was asight I had seen in photos and paintings, but never experienced. Baxter Mountain is in the High Peaks but isn’t a High Peak; it’s a Lilliputian among giants, a mountain that hadn’t made it on my radar before James Appleton. A Lake Placid native and Saranac Lake resident, Appleton has created the latest Adirondack hiking challenge — The Lake Placid 9er. He has baked a mix of small and not-so-small peaks into a casserole that both new and experienced hikers can feast on. There’s a beautiful and thoughtful logic to Appleton’s recipe. He picked Lake Placid because the town is a showcase for the Adirondack High Peaks. The proximity to 5,000-foot mountains like Mount Marcy and Algonquin can tempt new hikers to go from couch to High Peak. For many new hikers, this transition isn’t a good idea. “Hiking isn’t fun unless you’re physically primed and ready to go,” Appleton says. The Lake Placid 9er consists of three easy peaks, three moderate peaks and three

Cobble Hill, Mount Jo, Baxter Mountain, Mount Van Hoevenberg, Big Crow Mountain, Bears Den Mountain (Wilmington), Pitchoff Mountain, Catamount Mountain and Hurricane Mountain. tougher peaks. None of the mountains are High Peaks and most can be done in half aday. The idea is that if you finish the list, you should be ready to take on the High Peaks. Some hikers who are primed and ready to go have been taking on the Lake Placid 9er as an “ultra.” That is, doing all nine peaks in a 24-hour period. Appleton has been surprised how popular this has become considering it’s 30 miles of hiking in total. In the interest of full disclosure, this aging, out-ofshape columnist tried to trail run all the mountains in a 12-hour period. Just before I crashed and burned after only doing six peaks, it led to this conversation on Catamount Mountain: “Did you run all the way?” one of a trio of wide-eyed French-Canadians asked on my descent. I’d passed them on my way up. “Were you able to see me?” I asked. “No,” they said. “We couldn’t see you.” “If you weren’t able to see me, then yes,” Isaid. “Yes, I

did run the whole way.” Appleton and his brother-in-law auditioned a variety of mountains before paring the list down to the current nine. Some peaks that made the cut are familiar, Hurricane Mountain, for example, while others like Baxter and Bears Den were new to me. In addition to different degrees of difficulty, the peaks also offer radically different views. Catamount Mountain is a craggy peak that offered a striking profile across a field of flowers as I drove to the trailhead. The summit offers sumptuous views of the northern Adirondacks. Bears Den, part of the beautiful Flume trail system in Wilmington, hosts a dramatic view of Whiteface Mountain. Several mountains on the 9er list give High Peaks views without High Peaks effort. Though the Lake Placid 9er launched late last summer, Appleton says he received emails from grateful hikers who weren’t sure where to start until seeing his list. With a bit of trepidation, Appleton approached the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) with his plan for the LP9. One of the mountains on the list, Pitchoff, shares a trailhead with the far-too-popular Cascade Mountain (although there is another route and parking area for Pitchoff.) The DEC saw the wisdom of the Lake Placid 9er. So did some Lake Placid area businesses that signed on as sponsors to help offset some of the cost of patches and other promotional materials like the website. It will not only spread out foot traffic from the High Peaks to less visited but worthy smaller mountains. It will also hopefully put more prepared hikers in the High Peaks after they become 9ers.

Lessons learned on the trail ByLINE: HERB TERNS OUTDOORS

“Will you remember me when I leave?” a 6-year-old girl, a girl we call “Little Wren” asked over a smoky campfire at Allegany State Park in western New York. Little Wren asked me that question nearly three years ago during asummer we all thought would be our only summer together. As my wife, Gillian, eloquently wrote a few weeks ago, Little Wren did not leave. This spring, she officially became our daughter. There are times I’m still surprised to hear the young girl’s voice calling “dad” is calling for me. After three years, I’m still terrible at doing Little Wren’s hair and I occasionally mix up my wife’s and daughter’s clothes while sorting laundry, which annoys two women at once. I ask too much of the outdoors sometimes, but it’s the place I go to separate things that are just noise from the things that are really important. The woods and the waters teach, and these are the lessons I hope to share with the little girl who walks beside me: • Bach and Beethoven and Mozart and Mahler wrote great music, but waking up by an Adirondack lake to warblers, loons and chickadees is one of the most beautiful things you’ll ever hear. • Sometimes it rains; it’s just water. Sometimes it snows; it’s just frozen water. Plus, you can ski on the frozen stuff. • Put the heavy stuff in the bottom of your pack. • Campsites have either morning sun or afternoon sun. If you can find one with both, you’re very lucky. • Actually, if you’re camping, you’re already very lucky. • If you’re not sure how you feel about someone, go backpacking with them. It will teach you all you need to know. • Coffee tastes better when you drink it at sunrise next to an Adirondack lake. • No, you can’t have coffee until you’re older. • The flat tire on your bike isn’t the universe plotting against you. Sometimes

it’s getting you to stop and look at a pretty spot you might have missed otherwise. Sometimes, it’s areminder to call someone who cares about you to pick you up. • The second flat tire really is the universe plotting against you. • If you can, only share a tent with people you care about. • If you (or someone else) can fix the thing you’re about to complain about, then fix it. If it can’t be fixed, then there might not be any point in complaining. • The most beautiful days aren’t always obvious at dawn. Give each day a chance. • Food dropped on the ground at home is garbage. Food dropped on the ground while backpacking is seasoned. • Never trust the mileage on the trail signs. • There may be leeches and snapping turtles in that lake. Swim anyway. • It doesn’t matter what the forecast says, bring a rain jacket. Always. • The dog sleeps in the tent, no matter how smelly he is. You probably don’t smell that great either. • Being slow is not a sin. Fast people can slow down but slow people can’t go faster. Put the slow people in front so they can set the pace. • Let the fast people go fast once in a while so they remember they can. • I don’t care what size, color, religion or gender the person you love turns out to be, but they better be able to paddle a canoe properly. I will not watch some joker constantly switch the paddle from side to side every 10 seconds and call that paddling. The j-stroke is easy to learn. • Stick up for winter. People pick on it, but winter makes us who we are. • It’s just mud, but you know that already. The hard part is remembering when you grow up. • Don’t do the easy thing, do the right thing. If you’re not sure, the right thing is usually the one that takes more effort. • Don’t listen to the ultralight people; bring a book on your trip. A real book. • Read about far-off, exotic places but don’t forget the place around you needs discovering. • Boring stories are the ones where everything went right. • We’re probably not going to have many boring stories, you and me. • Start more sentences with “I did” than with “I watched.” • There’s probably some awesome adventure over that hill. Let’s go. • hterns@timesunion.com

This design trend is coming back Design trends come and go, but some have a funny way of resurfacing years after they first became popular. Homeowners who may have been considering renovating their home to remove a design element they believe to be passé might want to see if that feature has experienced a resurgence in popularity. In fact, one of the more derided home decor trends of yesteryear has slowly crept back into style, albeit in moderation. Wood paneling is back and better than ever, advise many design professionals. It’s the formerly ugly duckling that filled homes starting in the 1950s, creating drab dens and faux-wood family rooms. Paneling had long been an element of choice because it is relatively easy to install and can camouflage problem walls in a home, like those covered in boisterous wallpaper prints. Wood paneling reach the peak of its popularity in the 1970s, and since then homeowners have been tearing down these faux offenders for years or masking them in paint to brighten up spaces. However, the experts at Apartment Therapy report that wood paneling in shades of brown are making a comeback in cozy spots such as dens or studies. The warm tones of wood paneling elicit a retro vibe. But unlike their fake predecessors, today’s paneled walls are being outfitted in real wood, making them more eco-friendly and stylish than ever before. Designers have flocked to reclaimed wood and veneer panelings to incorporate them into design elements. And while wood paneling used to be hung vertically, designers now experiment with hanging paneling. LAWN CARE • Many people no longer use paneling to cover an (518) entire space. Paneling is used sparingly as an accent

wall or another feature for character. Wood walls can be stained in a rich mahogany to look upscale or be weathered and rustic. Homeowners ready to re-embrace wood paneling can choose to enhance one wall in a room. Think about the space above a fireplace or a strip of wall behind a sitting chair and side table. Paneling also can serve as a headboard behind a bed in a master suite. Painted horizonally, paneling can add dimension and texture to walls, even in a bathroom. Wood paneling is slowly making a comeback, proving that no design trend every truly goes away.

With more than 60 different species of deer worldwide, there’s a good chance individuals will have some sort of interaction with these majestic animals at one point during their lifetimes. Deer, which live on all continents except Antarctica, can survive in everything from mountainous areas to wet rainforests to suburban neighborhoods. These herbivores are voracious eaters that will search far and wide for their meals. Home landscapes tend to be easy pickings for foraging deer. Many people are excited to see deer in their neighborhoods and yards because they can be such graceful creatures to behold. However, once deer start to munch on ornamental trees, annuals and flowering shrubs, the novelty of these animals may wear off. Furthermore, deer also can be covered in ticks that spread illnesses like Lyme disease. Here are some tips to keep deer at bay. • Avoid tasty morsels. Deer like English ivy, lettuces, impatiens, pansies, and hostas. Fruit trees also are targets. Choose other plants to grow, and wait until after early spring, when deer aren’t as concerned with reMechanicville

Reduce distractions behind the wheel If you must use your cell phone, do so only after pulling over to the shoulder or into a rest stop. Despite the fact that automobiles are now designed with more safety features than ever before, the rate of traffic accidents and fatalities continue to rise. The National Safety Council says safety improvement like crash-avoidance technology hasn’t reduced accidents, and driver error is still to blame for many crashes - with distractions behind the wheel and impaired driving leading the way. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says distracted driving claimed 3,450 lives in 2016 alone. Distracted driving is defined as any activity that diverts drivers’ attention from the road. This can include everything from talking to passengers to eating to fiddling with the car radio. However, distractions from technology have become especially alarming, particularly texting or reading phones while driving. During daylight hours, approximately 481,000 drivers typically use cell phones while driving. The NHTSA says that removing one’s eyes from the road for a mere 5 seconds when traveling at 55 miles per hour is like driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed. Reducing distractions should be a priority for all drivers. Here are some suggestions, courtesy of Geico insurance and AAA Exchange. · Store loose gear and other items that can roll around away from the driver’s seat so you are not tempted to reach for them. · Adjust mirrors, GPS maps, climate controls, music,

The information is sent to one of the 9 leaders, who will then assist the caller. If you or someone you know needs information, resources, or a referral for a substance use problem, call 1-833-467-3123. Sheriff Patrick Russo Announces Membership Drive The New York State Sheriffs’ Institute will begin its annual Honorary Membership drive in Rensselaer County according to Sheriff Patrick Russo. The New York State Sheriffs’ Institute was established in 1979. It is a not-for-profit corporation, tax exempt organization, and contributions to the Institute are tax deductible. While the Sheriff’s Office is a unit of county government, many of the concerns of Sheriffs and other law enforcement agencies are best addressed on a statewide level. The Sheriffs’ Institute provides centralized training programs and services for all Sheriffs’ Offices, where those programs and services would be unavailable or impractical on a single county basis. The flagship program of the Sheriffs’ Institute is the Sheriffs’ Summer Camp for economically challenged children. The Sheriffs’ Camp, in its 42nd year of operation, is located on Keuka Lake and 840 children from across New York State attend each summer. The

Sheriffs’ Institute pays the entire cost of the camp stay and transportation. Most children attending wouldn’t otherwise have an opportunity for vacation travel or a summer camp experience. “In these difficult economic times we cannot forget our youth who will not have the opportunity for a summer camp experience or a summer vacation,” Sheriff Patrick Russo said. “By becoming an honorary member, you are supporting the Sheriffs’ Summer Camp for economically disadvantaged children.” In addition, the Sheriffs’ Institute operates a scholarship program that provides one scholarship to each of New York State’s Community College’s Criminal Justice Programs. This program is designed to help attract the best and the brightest to the criminal justice vocation. For more information about the Sheriffs’ Summer Camp and other Sheriffs’ Institute Programs, visit our website, www.sheriffsinstitute.org or simply google “Sheriffs’ Institute kids” and it will be your first option. Financial support for many of the Sheriffs’ Institute programs comes from Honorary Membership dues. Any persons interested in supporting the efforts of the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute by becoming an Honorary Member should contact the Sheriff if they do not receive an invitation in the mail or visit our web site at: www.sheriffsinstitute. org to download an application.

We Need EMT’s and Drivers: We Will Train You The Sand Lake Ambulance has been in existence for 60 years. We have operated as primarily a volunteer organization

for most of that time. We need your help to keep our costs down by filling out as many shifts with volunteer EMT’s and drivers as we can. We could particularly use recent retirees who are looking to stay active working days during the week. If you have ever been interested in becoming certified to provide emergency care to friends, family, neighbors, or others, we will pay for that training. The course is 4 months long and will require some commitment of time and work. And we will ask you to ride as a member for at least 2 years with Sand Lake Ambulance for training you. We also train ambulance drivers in EVOC training. We generally work on keeping our skills up with regular training and try to keep it both educational and enjoyable. And as an active member of the ambulance, you’ll be working calls and helping your community. You need to be in fairly decent physical health and able to lift 50 pounds fairly easily, you need to be okay with working with trauma patients or sick community members, and you need to be willing to get up at all hours to do it. Please consider joining, we need your service. We aren’t saying it won’t be work, but it will be worth it.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Antonio Delgado

A Family Outing

We are experiencing a major improvement here in the 19th Congressional District in our access to our Representative. Democracy works when people have the opportunity to express their concerns and wishes to elected representatives who value their views. Congressman Antonio Delgado has been exceptionally active in making himself available to his constituents by holding town meetings throughout the District as well as meetings with community groups. He has shown us that he is ready to listen and to work for solutions. I have been encouraged by the thoughtful responses I have received when I have phoned or written his office; an emailed letter from the Congressman and, on occasion, a phone call from a staff member. This tells me my voice matters. We all have a role in making our democracy work. A healthy democracy needs us to participate responsibly rather than just complaining. I appreciate Delgado’s ability to use words that lessen overheated political rhetoric. He pursues collaboration over partisanship. From the time he was elected, Congressman Delgado has listened to his constituents, done his research, and made thoughtful informed decisions. This is the kind of leadership I applaud in our representatives. Priscilla Fairbank, Poestenkill

I almost didn’t walk that way this morning after hearing a warning bark from he third house on the right where a hostile dog flings doggie insults at my dog, Sophie whenever we pass. Fortunately our enemy was just hopping into the family car; the coast was clear, so we proceeded. This section of Eastern Union Turnpike is straight but dippy. Up ahead I saw a large buck unhurriedly crossing the road. There was a car approaching. Close behind the buck was a doe, and behind the doe straggled three tiny fawns. I was enthralled by the scene but almost paralyzed with fear. With the dips in the road, would the driver see them, and brake in time? Holding my breath, I watched as the little family made the crossing safely. The tableau had been so beautiful, the relief so great, I had to share it with someone, but no one was there except Sophie, and she didn’t get it. As the car passed me; I gave an enthusiastic “thumbs up” and waved wildly (Actually, I almost did a cartwheel). From inside the care there were vigorous answering waves and happy smiles. Mutual wonder and relief flowed between us. There was joy in the sharing -- no words were necessary. It lifted my day, even my week. Naomi Boel, Averill Park

As always, we can accept donations only when we are open. The shop, located at 1249 Third Street in Rensselaer, is on CDTA bus route #214. Enter through the parking lot on the Catherine Street side and be amazed.

TERESA MARIE MOSHER,

It has been five years since God called you home. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and miss you. Your beauty, your love, and your life touched so many people, and we have continued to share and spread the love you gave us. You were amazing. Thank you for being part of our lives and loving us so much. ILYVM

Leaving a void in his life He could ask his brother, Or maybe call his cousin, but Hell, they were his age; Knew ‘bout what he did. He quickly took stock: Mom was gone... Grandpa gone a long time ago. Not a single aunt or uncle left. There was nobody to call... His kids/grandkids called him these days He suddenly realized he was perched At the top of the family tree. Riders Mills Historical Association: Stop The Bleed

Check our Facebook page for updates if weather is a concern: On Thursday August 15th at 6:00pm the Friends of Oakwood will present their next Full Moon Twilight Tour. Led by Oakwood volunteer Heidi Klinowski, we will look inside the opulent Gardner Earl Chapel, to take advantage of the western sunlight streaming through the vibrant stained glass windows. Then we will walk to the monuments of some of Oakwood’s interesting ‘residents’, where we’ll hear their stories. Uncle Sam’s grave and the panoramic overlook at sunset are included highlights of this walking tour. And of course we’ll hope for clear views of the full moon. On Saturday August 17th at 9am Oakwood presents a NEW tour, Millers, Merchants and Collar Makers. Troy and Rensselaer County Historian Kathy Sheehan will lead us on a walking tour to the gravesites of some of the workers of Troy’s 19th and early 20th C. She will tell us about their jobs and the kinds of contributions they made to our area. Hannah Lord Montague is sure to be included. Do you know why? Tuesday August 20th at 6pm is the date for Oakwood’s popular FAMILY SCAVENGER HUNT. Just $10. per Family, payable on arrival. We will search a new area this year with clues for readers and non-readers. Prizes go to all children who complete the hunt. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the chapel flagpole and we will caravan to the hunt site. In case of rain, we will call if your reservation includes your phone number. Coming Next: ADULT SCAVENGER HUNT Friday September 13th!

Riders Mills Historical Association is proud to present, “Stop the Bleed” a program by Albany Medical Center, developed for a nonmedical audience to address the needs of the immediate responder to control life-threatening bleeding until help arrives. Stop the Bleed, a national awareness campaign and a call to action, was launched in October 2015 and is intended to encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. Help given by an immediate responder can often make the difference between life and death before professional rescuers arrive. There will be a 30 minute lecture with 45-60 minutes with hands-on training. Thomas Moran will present this life saving program. Dr. Moran is the Trauma Education, Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator at Albany Med Trauma Program traumaprogram@amc.edu. He is a Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, EMT-Paramedic, Clinical Instructor, HVCC Paramedic Program, Rescue Captain, Niskayuna Fire District #2, Commissioner, Niskayuna Fire District #2, National Ski Patrol, Maple Ski Ridge.
