State’s gas line decision raises local question First Presbyterian Church, Sand Lake @1900

It’s been a long cold winter, but spring is upon us. The news of some important rehab projects and renewal of historic Sand Lake buildings is exciting. Let’s begin with Averill Park and the Rohl house that stands in the center of the hamlet next to Young’s pharmacy. Trevor Jewett purchased the house and is doing a great job rehabbing the property, keeping as much of the historical detail as possible. He is not using vinyl siding so even more detail is being preserved. There was a mystery regarding a large stone slab in the basement that looks like the Frankenstein monster could be brought to life on. After some research we discovered that the Everett Typewriter Sales and Service was located in the house. The stone table then may have been used as a worktable for typewriter repair. Mr. Fitzgerald ran the business. If anyone has more info on the property give me a call 518-674-2026. I was lucky to catch Please see RENEWAL 8

Denial is cheered by opponents of proposed Albany Loop pipeline By LARRY RULISON

Environmental groups were emboldened this week in opposition to National Grid’s Albany Loop natural gas pipeline project after the Cuomo administration blocked approval of a downstate pipeline that also was being backed by the utility. On Wednesday, the Department of Environmental Conservation denied a water quality certificate to the Northeast Supply Enhancement pipeline, proposed by Williams Cos. to bring natural gas to the New York City market. The agency said the 23-mile pipeline, which would have run underwater across New York

petitions to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office at the Capitol on Monday opposing the Williams project and other natural gas pipeline expansions say the same arguments that were used against the New York City project can be used against National Grid’s so-called E37 project, a 7-mile expansion of its Albany Loop that brings natural gas around the Capital Region. The $70 million project would connect National Grid’s system in Bethlehem to its Troy Gate Station on Bloomingrove Drive in North Greenbush with a pipeline extension that would be built under the Hudson River. The E37 project is currently being examined by the state Public

Service Commission, and National Grid is hoping to begin construction in the fall. It’s unclear when the PSC could make a decision on whether or not to approve the project. However, there has been enough public interest in the project, and enough people asking the PSC to extend the comment period so that more people could be heard, that last month the PSC extended the comment period from April 24 until May 24, which is Friday. The PSC will hold what’s known as a procedural conference on June 6 that will set the schedule for a future vote by the commisPlease see GAS LINE 8

Rensselaer County 4-H had four members participate in the New York State 4-H Horse Communications event at Cornell University. In this event, 4-H members have qualified through regional contests in which they prepared and delivered presentations utilizing topics connected to the equine industry and or equine science. Abigail Trinkle of Nassau and Kaylie Millar of West Sand Lake presented in the Junior Team Division and placed first. James Czub of Schaghticoke and Brigham Logue of Johnsonville both com-

peted in the Senior Individual Presentation Division and placed 7th and 1st respectively. They all did a great job representing Rensselaer County and our 15 county Region. By placing 1st, Brigham has earned a seat on the New York State Horse Communications Team that will compete at the Eastern National 4-H Round-Up in Louisville, Kentucky later this year. Strong communication skills can be applied to numerous areas of youth’s lives. If you are interested in this or other 4-H Youth Development programs, contact your local Extension office.

Town of North Greenbush May Report Thank you to the Youth Makes A Difference Committee for organizing a fun-filled Easter egg hunt at town hall despite the rain and wind! Your hard work for North Greenbush children is much appreciated. As I have previously written, National Grid is proposing the construction of a natural gas pipeline from Bethlehem through East Greenbush to North Greenbush. More information on National Grid’s proposal is available at http://nygasprojects. com/pipeline-e37-reliability-and-resiliency-project. htm. Paper copies of the application are available at the North Greenbush library and the East Greenbush Community Library. Neither National Grid nor the PSC have responded to my comments yet. As many of you are aware, the developer of a proposed condominium project off of Whiteview Road clear cut many of the trees from this parcel while his proposal is pending before the Planning Board. This tree-cutting resulted in widespread outcry from town residents and calls for town officials to do something. Unlike many neighboring municipalities, the North Greenbush zoning code does not regulate the harvesting of timber by requiring the property owner to obtain a permit or otherwise seek approval from the planning board. The North Greenbush code also does not significantly restrict the activities that developers may undertake on their property while a project is pending planning board approval. Currently, there is nothing the planning board could have done to stop the

developer from harvesting the timber on his land. At May’s town board meeting, I included an agenda item to discuss adopting local laws that would regulate timber harvesting and what a developer could do while a project is pending planning board approval. I am currently working with other town officials and the town attorney to come up with a proposal for the next meeting. The town’s Memorial Day parade is Monday, May 27. The parade will step off from town hall at 1:30 and will be followed by ceremonies and a community picnic at town hall. Please join the community in remembering those who sacrificed for all of us. ~Councilwoman Mary Frances Sabo, North Greenbush

N. Greenbush Town Clerk congratulates 2019 St. Jude’s Award Winners I want to tell you how grateful I was to be at the St Jude’s Awards Dinner to see Elaine & Bill Cronin, Frank Giuliano and Carol Larkin be honored! Elaine and Bill Cronin are two of the nicest, most gracious, all around truly good people you could

ever meet. I am so happy I could be there to see them receive the 2019 St Jude’s Community Service Award for all the good work they have done in our community. Carol Larkin is one of the sweetest and kindest people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. She is a great teacher who is wonderful to her students and just as good to their parents. I know, she was my son Ryan’s teacher at St Jude’s, and she was so very good and kind to us all. She gives so much of herself to our community and to everyone; it was a thrill to see “Miss Larkin” get the Rev. James Clark Volunteer Award, so well deserved! Last, but certainly not least, is my friend Frank “Frankie” Giuliano. I’ve known Frank most of my life and worked with him for a very long time. Frank is simply amazing; he volunteers all he can and has all his life. He helps people in any way he can, he’s been in our Wynantskill Fire Department for 65 years. He volunteers for St Jude’s and has for just about as long as the Fire Department among many other organizations he has volunteered with over the years. Frank is one of the greatest men I’ve ever known, he is good and kind and lives his life as God

would want him to. I am so very proud to be able to call this incredible gentleman my friend. Frank received the Rev. James Clark Volunteer Award and he is so very deserving of this Award. Congratulations Elaine and Bill Cronin, Carol Larkin and Frank “Frankie” Giuliano; a most deserving group to receive these awards! ~Katie Connolly, Town Clerk

Rev. George Hadden working at the First Bible Baptist Church in West Sand Lake. The entire church has been painted and the stained-glass windows have been rehabbed. Originally founded as a Methodist Episcopal church built in 1836, its origins are interesting. Sebastian Weatherwax and family were converted to Methodism after attending camp meetings in Albany County in the 1820s. Early services were held in the barn of Zacharia Fellows on the Albany road about a mile from where the church now stands. The old Sand Lake circuit was established in 1833 and included West Sand Lake, Glass House, Oak Hill, Hedding Chapel, Clarks Chapel, Iron Works and other small places. In 1836, Weatherwax became the preacher in charge. Special thanks to Rev. Hadden and his congregation for preserving this historic church. Finally, the Sand Lake Center for the Arts is scheduled for a facelift soon. The former Town Hall and First Presbyterian Church dedicated in 1835 is in dire need of a paint job. The church was purchased by the Town of Sand Lake and served as town hall from 1972 to 1999. The building not only serves as our town logo but is representative of the town to the many outsiders who attend performances there. Many thanks to all those who are working hard to preserve our historic structures. CONTINUED FROM 3

sioners, which is months away. “New York state should carefully look at the (E37) project for the same reason that they carefully looked at the Williams pipeline, specifically that the (E37) pipeline will go under the Hudson River,” said Robert Connors of Canaan, co-founder of Stop NY Fracked Gas Pipeline. National Grid, which says the Albany Loop extension is needed to satisfy requests by new commercial and residential customers for natural gas hookups and to meet increased demand from existing customers, says that the denial of the Williams pipeline’s water quality certificate doesn’t impact its Capital Region proposal. “There is no impact,” National Grid spokesman Patrick Stella said. “These are two separate projects on two separate gas systems.” Although the New York City pipeline was proposed by a separate company, National Grid had supported and advocated for the regulatory approval of the Williams pipeline. National Grid provides natural gas service to the New York City area, so it sees the extension of the Williams pipeline tied to its future ability to expand its customer base. “Williams will evaluate and address the issues cited in the denial decision and will resubmit the application quickly,” Stella said. “Until we have greater certainty around the project’s application approval timeline, we will continue to advise all new commercial and residential applicants in downstate New York that our ability to provide firm gas service is contingent on the timely construction of (the Williams pipeline).” Connors, who also runs a group called Community Advocates for a Sustainable Environment, says that National Grid is trying to scare people into thinking their homes or businesses could lose natural gas supply if either pipeline isn’t built. Connors and other environmental advocates push for the use of electrically powered heat pumps to cool and warm buildings, not natural gas. The groups fear the expansion of fracked natural gas drilling in Pennsylvania and other states if more capacity is built into the transmission network. “National Grid is fearmongering by saying there’s a threat of supply disruptions if they don’t build the pipeline,” Connors said, “when in fact there are alternatives in both cases: renewables, energy efficiency and more effectively regulating demand.” National Grid has the support of a wide variety of business groups and chambers of commerce to build the Albany Loop connection. They say the pipeline is needed for economic development and expansion. “Without competitively priced and reliable energy, our business, current employees, their families and future growth at our site is threatened,” Doug Martin, vice president of operations at Adirondack Beverages in Scotia, wrote the PSC in support of the Albany Loop project. The $70 million price tag for the Albany Loop project was approved by the PSC in National Grid’s 2012 rate case, although the commission still has the final say whether the project can proceed. Mothers Out Front is another local group that ties the expansion of natural gas pipelines to climate change. “Mothers Out Front in the Capital Region feels this decision on the Williams pipeline highlights the dangers the proposed E37 Albany Pipeline loop will have on the Hudson riverbed and surrounding communities if approved by the PSC,” said local Mothers Out Front organizer Megan Root. “Similar to the Williams pipeline, National Grid has failed to present reliability and resiliency need for the E37 Albany Loop Pipeline to the communities it will serve.” CONTINUED FROM 3

Poestenkill Historical Society May program “A MILL WORKER’S LIFE - 1835” presented by Phyllis Chapman Phyllis Chapman has presented many programs around the area. She portrays women and their contributions to history. She dresses the part and puts herself in the woman’s shoes. This month she will portray Lucy Larcom (1824-1893) who was a teacher, poet and author. After her father’s death, her mother moved from Beverly, Mass. to Lowell with her 10 children. In 1835, at age 11 Lucy began working at Boott Mills, a cotton mill, as a doffer to earn extra money for her family. She was a steady contributor to The Lowell Offering and while at Lowell developed a friendship with John Greenleaf Whittier. In later years, she became a teacher and poet, eventually publishing several books, among them “A New England Childhood”.

Phyllis will include audience participation during the program since part of the presentation involves creating a “mock textile mill”. Come and join us on Tuesday, May 28th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Town Hall on Route 351 in the downstairs meeting room. The program is free, everyone is welcome, and refreshments will be provided.

Greenbush Cemetery in need of donations The Greenbush Cemetery was incorporated in 1845. From Columbia Turnpike, one can see we are an old, historic cemetery in the Town of East Greenbush. However, we are still active and offering lots sales for a reasonable cost in three new sections. With lifestyle changes

in a more mobile culture, our cemetery is suffering financially. Lot sales are way down and more cremations are being done rather than burials. Cemeteries are forced to rely on donations to keep operating. The Greenbush Cemetery estimates the operating cost for 2019 is $20,000.00. We will need to raise $15,000.00 to stay

operational for this year. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to help maintain this historic cemetery in East Greenbush. The Greenbush Cemetery Board of Trustees (all volunteers) will be most appreciative! We will publicly list you as a donor unless you wish to remain anonymous. Please make checks payable to Greenbush Cemetery Association. Please mail checks to Jim Finke, Treasurer, 13 Horizon View Drive West, East Greenbush, NY 12061. For more information, contact: Bobbie Reno 518465-7938. Thank you.

This week’s scholar athlete is Morgan VanDervoort. Morgan is a captain on the Varsity Softball team. Morgan has played softball for almost ten years. “I started out with baseball, as I got older, I saw all my friends were playing softball. I decided to make the switch when I was 8.” Morgan’s favorite part of her sport is “being able to play with the same girls since elementary and middle school; it makes playing so much more enjoyable and stress free. After being together for so many years, you really begin to click as a team.” Morgan and her team’s years of hard work helped them to reach the state semifinals. This year, Morgan hopes to lead her team to the state championship. Morgan works hard both on the field and in the classroom. Throughout high school, Morgan has maintained a GPA of 90. This year, Morgan is taking courses such as Financial Algebra, Ceramics, Forensics, Participation in Government, Literature and Cinema, Economics, and Science Fiction and Fantasy. In her future, Morgan will be attending Hudson Valley Community College to enter the Exercise Science Program there, as well as play softball. Later, she plans to transfer to Russell Sage in order to become a sports nutritionist. Morgan does not only contribute her successes to her own efforts, but the help of others as well. “My family definitely inspires me to work hard in school and softball. They want to see me succeed. Knowing how happy that would make them makes me work that much harder.” Morgan also says that her teammates help push her to become a better player, “We all play for each other, not ourselves.” We all wish Morgan the best as she finishes her senior season at Averill Park and prepares to enter college.

Golf for beginners

5. Pay attention to short shots as well as the long ones. Spend as much time practicing with wedges and the putter as the driver to really tighten up all of your shots. 6. Learn the proper grip and stance by working with a coach. Invest in a glove to avoid callused hands, as you’ll be spending significant time practicing. With these tips, novice golfers can get on the road to developing a great golf game relatively quickly.

Millions of people hit the links to play golf recreationally, and many young stars of the game are inspiring others to try their hand at this difficult sport. There has never been a better time to play golf. However, to the uninitiated, golf can be complicated. There are many different rules and all sorts of equipment to learn and lingo to follow. In fact, the experts at Golf Digest say that some people can be scared off even before they hit the green. Fortunately, all it takes is a little research to get started on learning about and ultimately embracing the game of golf. Here are six ways to get started. 1. Start off on a practice range and not on the golf course. The range is a great place to acclimate oneself to the game and practice your swings. 2. Hook up with someone who can show you the ropes. Going it alone can tame feelings of embarrassment from being new to the game. However, having someone in your corner guiding you can make it easier to learn and love the game. Work with a local golf pro or enlist the help of a friend or family member with some golfing experience. 3. Learn all you can about the clubs, including which kinds are used for various types of shots. While a golfer is allowed to carry as many as 14 clubs in a bag, you will not need that many when first starting out, nor do you have to invest thousands of dollars in a set of clubs. It’s possible to find used clubs online if you want to try the sport before committing. 4. Lean toward more loft when selecting clubs. Look for drivers that have at least 10 degrees of loft and fairway woods that start at 17 degrees, offers Golf Digest. This will make it easier for beginners to get the ball into the air and can reduce sidespin so shots fly more straight.

How to help kids get into golf Golf is a game of skill that can take years, if not decades, to master. Many golfers find their time on the golf course both rewarding and relaxing, even on those days when the fairways seem impossible to find. Though many players never swing a golf club until they reach adulthood, it’s never too early to hit the links. Some of the world’s most accomplished golfers, including four-time Masters champion Tiger Woods, began playing as toddlers, and many feel that getting an early start can lead to a more successful game down the road. Getting kids into golf is a great way for parents to bond with their children while enjoying the great outdoors. Golf can also be used to teach kids humility, sportsmanship and the importance of hard work. Thanks to the often frustrating nature of golf, parents may find it somewhat challenging to instill a love of the game in their youngsters. But there are ways to introduce kids to this wonderful game that kids might just play for the rest of their lives. • Focus on having fun. Few, if any, golfers at your local golf course on a given weekend could say with certainty that golf has never frustrated them. The challenge of golf may be its most appealing characteristic to older players, but young kids can be easily overwhelmed by

the challenges golf presents. By focusing on having fun instead of perfecting techniques, parents can get kids to look forward to their time on the links. The more fun kids have, the more likely they will be to embrace the game and its many challenges. Don’t put pressure on youngsters as they develop their games, but encourage them through their struggles and reassure them that you faced the same obstacles when you started playing. • Hire an instructor with experience teaching children. Instructors with experience teaching children will understand the basics of the game and how learning those basics provides a great foundation for future enjoyment and success on the course. Instructors who have taught kids in the past also know that teaching youngsters the finer points of golf requires patience and encouragement. Ask a fellow parent or an employee at the club where you play to recommend an instructor for your child. And take advantage of any kids’ courses your club offers. • Purchase the correct equipment. Even the best golfers are bound to struggle when using the wrong equipment. While it might be unwise to invest in especially expensive equipment for youngsters likely to grow out of it in a few months’ time, deals can be found on used kids’ equipment. Used kids’ equipment is typically subjected to less wear and tear than used equipment for adults, as kids tend to play less often and fewer holes than adults when they do play. But make sure to find correctly sized equipment that kids feel comfortable using. • Play some holes. Instructors may teach kids the differences between the types of clubs and how to swing and putt. But golf is most fun when players are out on the links going from hole to hole. Instruction is important, but don’t forget to play a few holes with your child each week as well.

These golf terms are par for the course Golf is a game of sport and skill that can be played at any age. Millions of people in North America participate in golf as a recreational endeavor or a professional pursuit. As of the spring 2016, 25.13 million people in the United States played golf over the previous 12 months, according to Statistica. People may immediately think Canada’s sports-based loyalty favors hockey. However, on the recreational side, golf is king in the country. Canada has the fourth most golf courses of any country in the world, says the National Golf Foundation. Plus, one out of every 10 Canadians play golf — a participation rate that is more than double that of the United States. Storied golf history Although golf can be traced back to the Netherlands during the Middle Ages, many people concur that the modern game of golf — played over 18 holes — is a Scottish invention. The popularity of the sport began to spread throughout the world from Great Britain. The first permanent golf club in North America was founded in 1873 and was named Canada’s Royal Montreal Club. The first 18-hole course in the United States was The Chicago Golf Club. Golf lingo Understanding the terminology is key to becoming a full-fledged golf fanatic. While golf lingo is extensive, here is a sampling of some of the more popular terms to get novices started, courtesy of the PGA.

Enjoy all the amenities of our well-established private club!

Approach: A shot hit towards the green. Attack: The relative angle at which the clubhead approaches the ball at impact. Backswing: The motion that involves the club and every element of the body in taking the club away from the ball. Birdie: A score of one under par on a hole. Bogey: A score of one over par on a hole. Bunker: A hallow comprised of sand or grass that serves as an obstacle. Carry: The distance a ball will fly in the air. Chip: A short approach with a low trajectory. Chunk: A poor shot caused by hitting the turf. Divot: The turf displaced when the club strikes the ball. Downswing: The swing forward from the top of the backswing. Eagle: A score of two under par on a hole. Golf range: A facility where people can practice golf swings. Grip: The positioning of hands on the club. Hole: A round receptacle on the green that the ball is aimed into. Lie: As it relates to the golf ball, the position when it has come to rest. Links: Specific term for a course built on linksland, which is land reclaimed from the ocean. Mulligan: An extra shot taken on a poor first shot.

Take advantage of our very specially priced 1919-2019 Centennial Celebration Membership Plan. $2,419 Single $3,219 Family

Par: The score an accomplished player is expected to make on a hole, either a three, four or five. Putt: A shot on the green. Stance: The position of the feet. Golf terms are as varied as the game itself. Knowing commonly used words and phrases makes for a more intimate understanding of the sport.

Interesting facts about golf Golf is played all over the globe. Golf is one of the world’s oldest sports, boasting a rich history. Golf is a sport of skill, that can involve not only athletic prowess, but also brain power. Here are some interesting facts about the game. • To this date, golf is only one of two games to be played on the moon. The other is a javelin throw. • Long before the advent of tees, golfers played off of hand-built sand piles. • In 1889, Ab Smith inadvertently coined the phrase “birdie,â€? when he hit a shot he defined as a “bird of a shot.â€? • Making a hole-in-one during a round of golf is quite a challenge. However, the odds of making two are incredibly low, at one in 64 million. • Only around 20 percent of golfers have a handicap below 18. The United States Golf Teachers Federation defines handicap as “a measure of a player’s current ability over an entire round of golf, signified by a number. The lower the number, the better the golfer is.â€? • The word “caddyâ€? comes from “cadet,â€? the French word for “student.â€? • A regulation golf ball contains 336 dimples.

Sand Lake Garden Club Celebrating 25 years The Sand Lake Garden Club is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. Pat Mulligan, Janet Michael and Bill Glasser, all charter members of the club, vividly remember the first few years of the garden club. “We used to meet at the old town hall”, says Janet referring to the town’s iconic landmark church which is the present home of the Sand Lake Center for the Arts. The Club was established in 1994. Originally formed to beautify yards, learn more about gardening and share information, the Club has expanded to offer educational monthly programs. The members maintain five public gardens in town and offer scholarships for graduating seniors. They encourage young people in food growing, native plantings and encourage garden enthusiasts. In order to help celebrate our 25 years, we will be posting gardening tips throughout the summer and early fall to all readers of The Advertiser. So, keep looking for new tips and please feel free to join us every fourth Thursday of the month at the Sand Lake Town Hall at 7:00 pm for an informative meeting, refreshments and fellowship with other gardeners. Gardening Tips for this week are: 1. Clean all your tools, have clippers, shovels etc.

Enjoy safe backyard barbecues this summer Backyard barbecues are synonymous with warm weather. And why wouldn’t they be? Grilling over an open flame when the weather is warm embodies the relaxing spirit of spring and summer, prompting many people to leave their oven ranges behind in favor of char-

coal and gas grills. As relaxing as backyard barbecues can be, they can quickly take a turn for the worse if cooks don’t emphasize safety when grilling out. According to the National Fire Protection Association, an average of 9,600 home fires are started by grills each year. In fact, the Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that, between 2012 and 2016, an average of 16,600 patients went to the emergency room each year because of injuries involving grills. Such statistics only highlight the need to balance the fun of grilling with safety when hosting a backyard barbecue or cooking for the family. The following are some steps people can take to ensure their backyard barbecues are safe. • Recognize that gas grills pose a threat as well. It’s easy to assume gas grills don’t pose as great a threat as charcoal grills, which produce soaring flames once the charcoal is lit. But the NFPA notes that gas grills are involved in 7,900 home fires per year. No grill is completely safe, and cooks must emphasize safety whether they’re using gas grills, charcoal grills or smokers. • Only use grills outdoors. Grills should never be used indoors. Even if rain unexpectedly arrives during a backyard barbecue, keep the grill outside. If unexpected rain is accompanied by lightning and thunder, extinguish the fire in the grill and go indoors. • Place the grill in a safe location. Grills should be placed well away from the home. Avoid locating grills near deck railings or beneath eaves and overhanging branches. Cut overgrown branches before lighting a grill fire if they are in close proximity to the grill. • Keep your grill clean. The buildup of grease and fat, both on the grill grate and in trays below the grill, increases the risk of fire. Clean the grill routinely. • Properly light the grill. Lighting gas and charcoal grills requires caution. Before lighting a gas grill, make sure the lid is open. If you must use starter fluid to light a charcoal grill, the NFPA advises using only charcoal starter fluid. Never add any fluids to the fire after it has been lit. • Do not leave a grill unattended. Cooks should never leave a lit grill unattended. If you must leave the grill, only do so if another adult can stand in your stead. Lit grills pose a threat to children and pets, and unattended grills can be blown over by gusts of wind or tipped by wild animals, such as squirrels. Standing by a lit grill at all times can protect against such accidents and injuries.

We can never have the peace of God, which passes all understanding, if we participate in this horror. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR This nation was established with three supposedly equal branches of government: Executive, Legislative and Judiciary, to create a balance of power and checks and balances. There is currently a struggle between the Legislative (Congress) and the Executive (headed by the president) to force Mr. Trump’s tax returns to be turned over to Congress. The NYS Legislature (both houses controlled by Democrats) seeks to pass the TRUST Act (Tax Returns Release Under Specific Terms Act) to support the call for the release of Mr. Trump’s personal tax returns. NYS legislators say this act would “make a change in the balance of power at the federal level.” Do we want to change the balance of power to make the Legislature the most powerful branch of government? As tax returns are the chief issue, perhaps all those seeking office at any level, should be required to reveal ten years of past tax returns before being allowed on any elective ballot local, state or national. Would both parties support this measure? If not, why? This would seem fair. This would preserve fairness rather than allowing the Legislative (Congress) to become the most powerful branch of government. ~Steve Sevits East Greenbush, NY

Memoirs of an Amnesiac: Call of the Wild I’m 67 now, and I’ve gone these past 44 years without vomiting. It’s one of my proudest accomplishments. The last time I threw up was Mardi Gras, 1975. Mardi Gras is celebrated not just in New Orleans; I happened to be in Stuttgart, Germany, at the time. Fresh out of college, I took off by myself and managed to find work in a German insurance office. I was there to learn the language. Our office building actually had a wine cellar. Within moderation, it was OK to drink on the job. On that day, the cellar was decorated for a party, and just about everyone was there. At college, I’d never had the time or money to go boozing. Here the drinks were free. I knew the warning against mixing grape and grain, but I also remembered this other advice: “When you’re in the shower, take off your raincoat.” So, I threw caution to the wind and had two of every kind of drink available. At first, I felt great, and even danced with the boss’s pretty secretary. While sober, I’d never have the nerve to ask her. Even now, fortified with “Dutch courage”, the best I could manage was the caveman approach: Without speaking, I took her by the hand and led her onto the dance floor, where we bobbed around ‘til the song ended. I’m not sure what kind of impression I made, but there was no second dance. Soon the alcohol took full effect, and I felt the walls closing in. I retreated to my office and lay my head on the desk—until suddenly my stomach announced that it was time to come clean. I made it to the men’s room just in time. All that was left was to go home. People I saw in the street were weaving around, just as I was. At the train station, I had to focus every brain cell on catching the right train. At my apartment, I put myself to bed at

5:30 and slept a solid 12 hours. Next day, I half-expected a round of applause for making it to work on time. But all my colleagues were there already. It was business as usual, like nothing had happened the day before. One beer is my limit now; that’s how I’ve kept my record all these years. I’m pretty good at not getting headaches, too. Mostly, I just give them. ~Ron McKee, Averill Park, NY

When I Was Young When I was young I loved playing in the park My parents often warned me to be home before it’s dark. As I walked home one day I suddenly heard a cry I looked around thinking the sound must be nearby. Then I saw a half-grown possum that looked like it was dying The sounds he made were sounds like someone who was crying. I held him tenderly and sneaked him near my bed I made a nest of leaves for him to rest his little head. I fed him nuts and berries and pet food for a cat Soon he had recovered and was even getting fat. I named him Little Pepper and now he was my pet He grew by leaps and bounds and got big as he would get. One sad day I knew it was time for him to go He had to find his family and he wanted me to know. One night I took him out and said my sad goodbye He let me hold him once more as I began to cry. Somewhere in the wilds Little Pepper lives his life With...I hope and picture…his children and his wife. So let us all treat wild life with respect and grace Especially on our highways where they share our space. ~Sylvia Honig Wynantskill, NY (I’m not in my second childhood, but I like poems that teach children kindness to animals.)

North Greenbush Board Applauds Guilty Developer The Town Board meeting of May 9th saw all 4 present Board members applauding one of the town’s largest developers for the quality of his projects. This is the same

developer who was shut down by the Army Corp of Engineers for failing to obtain a permit and covering a stream in violation of the Clean Waters Act. The developer blames his deceased engineer for the permit, however, the June 4, 2018 Planning Board minutes states on page 1 “...they will need a permit for the creek from the Army Corps of Engineers...”. Thus, the engineer did not fail to get the permit, the applicant failed. Now he wants to add even more housing units, dozens in fact, behind the Stewarts on RT 4. Traffic at rush hour in this area is astounding now, but the developer believes more homes should be no problem because of a planned roundabout at the intersection. In reality, with traffic lined up for a mile and through 4 lights, the roundabout will be a staging area filled with cars with no place to go. Add to this hundreds of approved homes just south of Stewarts and one can only wonder. The Board voted 3 in favor, 1 recusal, 1 absent, to send the new proposal to the Planning Board for consideration. The recusal came from the lone Democrat, Mrs. Sabo, who did not explain her recusal. Based on reporting in the Times Union, her husband has acted as the attorney for the developer, making her unable or unwilling to protect the residents of this town from runaway development. The Board also failed to take a stand on the proposed gas pipeline as East Greenbush has done even refusing to consider a hearing on the matter. Respectfully submitted, ~Ron Sinico, Wynantskill, NY

Pulitzer “Campfire” Readings and Discussion Group On Wednesdays, June 5th and 19th, at 6PM, Professor Tom Bulger will lead a reading and discussion group at the Troy Public Library. For a hundred years, the Pulitzer Prize has been a leader in recognizing excellence in American journalism, letters, drama, and music. Celebrate the centennial of the Pulitzer

Prizes with this reading and discussion theme, featuring five novels that won the award for literature. Each novel in this series resonates with our contemporary moment, by looking at how authors have depicted our struggles to better ourselves and achieve the American dream — and how, despite our efforts, we can end of up unfulfilled or at odds with other elements of society. The next selection, Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, is available at the check-out desk at the Main Library. New members are welcome! This Program is free and open to the public. For more information, and to register, call the library at 518-274-7071or online at www.thetroylibrary.org. The Troy Public Library is located at 100 Second Street, Troy, NY.

Troy Area United Ministries to hold FEAST! On May 30th, Troy Area United Ministries (TAUM) will hold its annual FEAST! Dining for a Cause on Thursday, May 30, at Franklin Terrace Ballroom. This year’s event will benefit the Furniture Program. The program will also honor and highlight the generosity of Stewart’s Shops and Albany Presbytery. Cocktails begin at 5 pm and dinner at 6 pm. Ticket information is available at www.taum. org. FEAST! Dining for a Cause includes an elegant buffet dinner, cash bar and silent auction featuring getaways, themed gift baskets and excursions. Advance raffle tickets to win a dream vacation may be purchased at www. taum. org. TAUM’s Furniture Program recycles good, used furniture to help families to rebuild their lives. Last year $275,000 worth of furniture helped people in the Rensselaer County area. Demand for the

The free, two-day event, which is open to the general public, will be held Thursday, May 30, from 4-8 p.m.; and Friday, May 31, from noon to 7 p.m. at The Armory at Sage College of Albany on New Scotland Avenue. “The Freihofer’s Run for Women Health and Fitness Expo showcases the best in health and fitness in the Capital Region,” said Freihofer’s Run for Women Co-director Kristen Hislop. “It highlights fitness facilities, health and wellness companies, health and fitness activities, nutrition and healthy eating, fitness apparel and gear, plus clinics on self-defense, mental health and running, and preparing yourself to run injury free.
