This year’s Sand Lake Memorial Day Parade will be Monday, May 27, at 10:00am. The Parade route is from Averill Ave. in Westfall Village to the Sand Lake Veteran’s Memorial Park on NYS Route 43. Ceremonies will begin at about 10:30 in the Park. This year’s parade theme is the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings on the Normandy Beaches.

To attract more participation and attendance this year, we encourage all interested civic organizations, businesses, churches, community and youth groups and individuals to participate in this year’s parade.

Our Grand Marshal will be Duane Wehnau, a World War II veteran who served in the Navy in the Pacific and our honored speaker is MSgt Jason S. Robelotto who served as the First Sergeant for the 109th Medical Group, Stratton Air National Guard Base, New York. Sergeant Robelotto enlisted in the Air Force September 2003 and attended the Medical Materiel Apprentice Course in June 2006. Veteran cop expected to plead guilty Stolen property found at home of East Greenbush officer

Stolen razors, detergent pods and air fresheners found in the home of a town police officer have led to the Town Board calling a special meeting to accept his resignation and end his 15-year career, officials said.

Officer Warren Kretzschmar, a 15-year veteran of the town police department, has been on an unpaid suspension for the past several weeks, Supervisor Jack Conway

said.

Kretzschmar is scheduled to appear at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Schodack Town Court before Justice Paul Peter when he’s expected to plead guilty to a misdemeanor to satisfy the felony charge he faces.

“I anticipate a resolution will be reached Wednesday night,” said Cheryl Coleman, the defense attorney representing Kretzschmar.

Kretzschmar’s foray on the other side of the law began in September

2018 when State Police arrested him after investigators with a search warrant found stolen razors, detergent pods and air fresheners in Kretzschmar’s home. The state Attorney General’s Office carried out the investigation and is prosecuting Kretzschmar.

Before his arrest, Kretzschmar had never been accused of misconduct, according to town authorities.

Kretzschmar, 47, was arrested at the end of his shift at East

Greenbush Police Department headquarters. He was charged with misdemeanor fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

The case was transferred to Schodack Town Court to avoid conflicts of interest.

The charges were upped with the addition of a felony count of first-degree scheme to defraud, according to court records. Kretzschmar was allegedly working with two other Please see COP 8

Welfare fraud sweep nets 19 Rensselaer County still looking for seven others in crackdown

Rensselaer County arrested 19 people in a welfare fraud sweep and is looking for seven others, county officials said Monday.

“Fraud sweeps act as a deterrent to some who may be thinking of committing fraud,” Theresa Beaudoin, the county’s social services commissioner, said at a press conference at the Rensselaer County jail.

The investigations involved cases in which a total of more than $56,000 was allegedly stolen in public assistance benefits, Beaudoin said.

Department investigators worked with other law enforcement in the county to make the arrests, she said.

“This money is our money -- it is taxpayers’ money that’s being funneled to those who don’t deserve it,” District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly said. “We need to reserve that money

Sheriff Patrick Russo said the sheriff’s office will work with other county law enforcement agencies to crack down on welfare fraud.

The suspects face felony grand larceny charges when the amount stolen totals more than $1,000 for fourth-degree grand larceny and more than $3,000 for third-degree grand larceny.

County Executive Steve McLaughlin said the county will roll out various ways for people to report suspected fraud beginning Tuesday with renscofraudtips@dfa.­state.ny.us.

Schodack Supervisor’s Report for April 2019 In a continuing effort to keep residents informed of my activities as well as issues pertaining to the Town, I submit to them this report for April of 2019. As always, further information can be found on the Town’s website or its social media pages.

Earlier this year, after the departure of our previous Animal Control officer, we began to look for a replacement. After beginning this process and looking into the duties and requirements of the position, we quickly determined we needed to make some updates in order to ensure the residents of Schodack receive the best possible service. Over the past several months, in conjunction with my fellow Town Board members, our attorney, and most recently Elizabeth Holmes from NYS Ag and Markets, we’ve worked to develop the new job description and we will be holding interviews to fill this position and should be announcing a new Animal Control Officer shortly.

On April 9th, I attended the Rensselaer County DWI Victim Memorial dedication ceremony. It was a somber but moving event that really drives home what a selfish and reckless decision drunk driving can be and highlighted the all too frequent cost innocent victims pay for it. In this day with ride share programs like Uber and Lyft, there really is no excuse for anyone to drink and drive. I thank Rensselaer County Stop DWI Coordinator John Hourigan for the work he does within our communities and with local law enforcement in the effort to eliminate these tragedies.

And finally, in celebration of Arbor Day and part of their journey to improve their community,

Daisy Troop 1762 held a tree planting ceremony at our Town Park. With the help of Park Manager Dan Garvansites, the Daisies placed two trees near our pavilion which will help beatify our park for years to come. I admire these young ladies for their generosity and commitment to being a positive force in their community. I was honored to attend their ceremony and was joined

Tracey Rex Reports to the People of Schodack I believe staying in touch with constituents is an important part of serving in elective office.

This monthly report is an example of my commitment to keeping residents informed of the activities of the Schodack Town Board. All town board meetings can be viewed live or at a later date at https://townhallstreams. com/towns/schodack.

During April, the Town Board accepted audits conducted by the Town Comptroller for the Building Department funds, Town Clerk funds, Justice Court funds and Petty Cash funds. The Comptroller performed the audits in accordance with guidelines provided by the Office of the State Comptroller.

Performing internal audits of cash collection activities are essential for improving government operations, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, and protecting assets.

The Town Board approved the Road Program as proposed by the Superintendent of Highways to resurface with hot-mix asphalt on Apple Tree Lane, Clove Road, Cynthia Lane, Jensis Road, Old Miller Road and Shelter-

wood Road. Additionally, crack fill/single chip seal treatments will be applied on Beaver Road, Knickerbocker Road, Lape Road, Palmer Road, Poyneer Road, Rice Road, Sagendorf Road and Schoolhouse Road. Thank you to our Highway Department workers for their dedicated service to maintaining over 100 miles of townowned roads.

I believe the work of a Town Board member goes beyond attending meetings and casting votes on resolutions. To me, it is also important to be actively engaged in our community, attending events, and supporting local organizations and good causes.

It was an honor to attend the annual Rensselaer County DWI Memorial Ceremony hosted by Rensselaer County District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly.

Families of loved ones, community members and elected officials were in attendance to honor the lives lost to impaired drivers and to give hope in saving lives from being stolen by the dangerous decision to drive while impaired.

I had a great time participating in the East Greenbush-Castleton Youth Baseball and Softball League Opening Day Parade and Ceremony. Best wishes to the players and thank you to the coaches who teach our youth the game of baseball/softball and the important values of teamwork and fair play.

Sand Lake Ambulance Announces its 2019 Fund Drive

In conjunction with EMS Week, Sand Lake Ambulance (SLA) celebrating its 60th anniversary, is kicking off its 2019 Annual Fund Drive in the Town of Sand Lake.

Mailers should be arriving soon. The Fund Drive is an integral part of SLA’s ability to continue to provide high level emergency services to town residents.

The money contributed by donors is used by SLA to obtain state of the art heart monitors, chest compression devices for doing CPR and automated breathing equipment. In addition, the ambulances and the paramedics carry Narcan to help in the fight against opioid addiction and other drugs that help stabilize people with breathing issues.

Your generous support is greatly appreciated and goes a long way toward keeping this service available in the town.

A Call to Artists for a Summer Juried Art Show - “Turn, Turn, Turn” Artists of all media are invited to submit up to two works for a juried art show titled, Turn! Turn! Turn! at Sand Lake Center for the Arts. The artwork will be based on the song Turn! Turn!

Turn! by Pete Seeger to honor him on the anniversary of his 100th Birthday. The exhibition opens on July 1, 2019 and ends August 31, 2019. Pittstown Historical Society Anti-Rent War Lecture The Anti-Rent War (1839 – 1869) will be the subject of a lecture by historian Michael Barrett on May 16th at 7:30 PM at the Pittstown Town Hall in Tomhannock (97 Tomhannock Road).

Barrett will talk about the turbulent pre-Civil War period in which armed resistance, terror, imprisonment and strife swept across 16 counties of upstate NY. The Anti-Rent movement protested the leasehold property that the landed aristocracy refused to relinquish. Barrett, who is presently serving as the Executive Director of the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway and the Burden Iron Works Museum in Troy, has lectured extensively and is a member of numerous local historical societies.

Capital Community Voices Presents Spring Concert EAST GREENBUSH, NY – Capital Community Voices, directed by Julie Panke, will present “At the Hop” on Saturday, May 11th, at 7:30 pm at Genet Elementary School, Route 4, East Greenbush, NY. It’s anticipated Kretzschmar will plead guilty to the misdemeanor charge, resign from the police department and not take another job as a police officer. He will not receive a jail sentence.

The Town Board will hold its special meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Town Hall to accept Kretzschmar’s resignation. The public notice said the meeting is to accept an officer’s resignation. Conway confirmed that Kretzschmar is the officer.

Troop G referred questions to the state Attorney General’s Office Friday. The state agency did not immediately respond to a request for information about the case.

Town of East Greenbush Memorial Day Parade The Town of East Greenbush in collaboration with the Melvin Roads American Legion and the East Greenbush VFW are busy planning the annual Memorial Day Parade. This year’s parade will take place on Saturday May 25, 2019, kicking off at 10 a.m. from the East Greenbush Bowling Center and proceed down Columbia Turnpike to the Melvin Roads Post. A short prayer service will take place at the Greenbush Cemetery recognizing a fallen comrade from the Second World War. Veterans are encouraged to participate.

For those veterans unable to march, the Capital District Transportation Authority, as well as car dealerships in our area, have graciously offered transportation in their vehicles. Parade participants should assemble at the East Greenbush Bowling Center at 9 AM. At the parade’s conclusion, there will be a small ceremony at the Melvin Roads Post, representatives from Town and County Government will offer brief words of encouragement to those present. Hot dogs and beverages will be provided.

SCHOOL BULLETIN Maria Fontaine Named EGTA Teacher of the Year School Social Worker Maria Fontaine with EGTA President Drew Romanowski at Red Mill Elementary School.

Congratulations to School Social Worker Maria Fontaine who was named Teacher of the Year by the East Greenbush Teachers Association. Ms. Fontaine serves students at Green Meadow and Red Mill Elementary Schools by providing individual and group counseling services; class lessons for character education traits, life skills and wellness topics; intervention services; and offering consultation to school staff and parents.

The annual award, which was first given out in 1970, is voted on by the hundreds of members in the EGTA. “To be recognized as support personnel was even more of an honor for me because it truly means that my colleagues appreciate not just the support I may be giving them, but also their students and families,” said Ms. Fontaine. “I’m very humbled and grateful.”

Ms. Fontaine has worked in East Greenbush Central School District for the past 14 years. Prior to that, she worked as a school social worker in Florida.

In addition to her regular job duties, Ms. Fontaine contributes to special programs that directly benefit students. She coordinates the After-School Enrichment Program, the annual Character Education Walk and the new Backpack Program at Red Mill. She also serves on the Red Mill and Green Meadow Instructional Support Teams.

“My favorite part of my job is connecting with the We Buy students,” Ms. Fontaine said. “Just knowing that Junk/Unwanted I am one part of their life Cars And Trucks that hopefully is meaningful and positive is so gratifying.”

The city has closed the Ferry Street tunnel that carries eastbound traffic from the Troy-Watervliet Bridge into the city’s downtown. Issues with the concrete ceiling forced the closure, city spokesman John Salka said.

Repairs are not expected to be completed before the end of Thursday. In the meantime, traffic is being diverted onto the River Street/Front Street off-ramp, to River Street, Adams Street and Fourth Street.

The city advised heavy trucks to seek alternate routes.

The shutdown was apparently unexpected: The traffic advisory issued by Troy said the closure was effective immediately. Water has been dripping through seams in the roof in recent weeks. Several potholes in the roadway also will be repaired while the tunnel is closed. The state Department of Transportation contacted Troy to close the tunnel, Salka said.

“Following a scheduled inspection, DOT found that concrete was chipping off the surface of the Ferry Street tunnel and directed the City of Troy to make repairs. Once the repairs are complete, DOT will re-inspect the tunnel before certifying that it is safe for travel,” DOT spokesman Joseph Morrissey said Friday.

The Ferry Street tunnel first opened to traffic Dec. 21, 1967, six months ahead of schedule, according to The Sage Colleges Libraries archives. The 514-foot-long tunnel was Russell Sage College’s solution to avoid widening Ferry Street to a fourlane highway, which state transportation officials had announced in 1961.

AP’s softball team defeated Burnt Hills 3-0 on 4/29.

Maise Dawson homered for AP and McKenzie Swinson and Kelsey Mohl each drove in a run in the victory. AP followed this win with a 6-2 win against Ballston Spa on 4/30. Kelsey Mohl and Marissa Nagel each recorded 2 RBI’s and Jadyn Lee got the win in a complete game performance. The Warriors ousted Troy 3-1 on 5/1 behind another complete game performance from Jadyn Lee and a 3 hit day for McKenzie Swinson.

AP’s baseball team defeated Ballston Spa 9-7 on 4/29.

On 4/30, the Warriors shut out Scotia 14-0. The Warriors picked up their third victory of the week on 5/1 with a 5-3 victory over Troy. Up next for AP is an away game against Troy on 5/10.

Boys lacrosse defeated Maple Hill/Ichabod Crane 16-2 on 4/29. Aidan Jones and Nick Gelder each recorded 3 goals for AP. Matt Kenneally, Adam Kiely, and Chris Kalinowski also added 2 goals in the win. On 5/2, AP fell to Ballston Spa 19-2. They will next take on Guilderland at home on 5/9.

Girls lacrosse destroyed Emma Willard 16-1 on 4/29.

Anita Reitano and Lauren Meyers led the Warriors with 4 and 3 goals, respectively. On 4/30, the Warriors fell to Columbia in a close 12-11 contest. Lauren Meyers scored 5 times to lead AP’s offense and both Julia Foster and Janey Adams added 2 goals in the defeat. The Warriors fell to Ballston Spa 9-6 on 5/1. Julia Foster found the nets twice and Skye Taylor recorded 12 saves for AP in the loss.

The boy’s tennis team won their senior day game against Troy on 5/1. Dylan Hansen, Tristan Shelhamer, Brian Bourne, Nico Donvito, Nate Jamison, and Nixon Kwok all got wins for AP in singles. The doubles teams of Ryan Baker/Logan Bielawski, Kyle Reasor/Sam Bendett, and Nick Spink/Aidan Westfall all also recorded wins for AP. AP’s boys track and field team beat Burnt Hills 89-84 but fell to Schenectady 97-83 on 5/1. Jamie Cocca threw 55’ 9.5” in the shot put, which broke a school record set in 1983.

The girls track and field team also faced off against Burnt Hills and Schenectady on 5/1 and defeated each of them.

This week’s scholar athlete is Julia Haworth. Julia is a defender on the varsity lacrosse team. Julia has played lacrosse for seven years after she began playing the sport in sixth grade.

Julia says her favorite aspect of lacrosse is the friendships she has formed through the sport; “the connections I’ve made throughout the years will hold a special place in my heart forever.” To prepare for this season, Julia attended preseason conditioning as well as play for a travel team through Capitaland Lacrosse. Julia’s offseason efforts have helped her team greatly as they beat Shaker for the first time in school history. Julia hopes her and her team’s hard work will help them win a sectional title this year. “It is more possible than it ever has been because of the amazing effort this team has put in this year.”

Not only does Julia work hard on the field, but in the classroom as well. Julia has maintained an average of 93 throughout high school. Julia’s hard work in her academics was recognized last Fall when she was inducted into the National Honor Society. Julia participates in Student Government and does community service through the AP Youth Girls Lacrosse program by refereeing, coaching, and running practice clinics for younger players. Additionally, Julia is a candidate for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Student of the Year. In the future, Julia will follow in her mother’s footsteps as she will be attending SUNY Oneonta to study Early Childhood Education.

Julia’s greatest role model has been her sister Emily. “She has shown me the type of person I can be and inspires me to be better just like her. Emily always brings out the best side in me, and I know I can always rely on her to keep my head up. With her being a high honor student, and an EMT in her free time, she inspires me to work hard and give back.”

Julia would like to thank her teammates for making her last season unforgettable: “Thank you for laughing with me until it hurts, letting me have a shoulder to cry on, and most importantly always having my back.”

We all wish Julia the best as she finishes her high school season and enters college.

Burden Lake Junior Ambassadors of Golf Ron Choquette came up to Burden lake from the Jersey Shore in 1983. For over 30 years, Ron taught Juniors how to play the game of golf. Some Juniors went on to play in College and one became a PGA Professional. Over 2500 kids learned the game of Golf from Ron. This summer, Ron is coming out of retirement to run the Junior Golf Program.

As a kickoff to summer, we are offering an award for two junior golfers as BLCC Ambassadors of Golf. The two ambassadors will get a free membership to Burden Lake Country Club, a set of golf clubs and the chance to meet PGA Professionals at the Traveler’s Championship in Hartford, Connecticut.

To participate for the Junior Ambassador of Golf, you must be between the age of 10 to 17 and a resident of Rensselaer County. We have a questionnaire to fill out on our website, www.burdenlakecountryclub.com. All questionnaires should be filled out and returned by May 20th. We will announce the winners by June 1st.

We plan to make this an annual award to help promote junior golf in the area. Ron made a commitment to Junior Golf a long time ago, and we plan to keep the commitment in the future.

WGAWB Tournament Results The Women’s Golf Association of Winding Brook began its season with a N-O-S-E Tournament on Wednesday, May 1. With this tournament, only the holes beginning with the letters NOSE will be counted.

In first place with a score of 36 was Karen Meyer.

Geriatric pets are susceptible to the same conditions seen in older people, including cancer, diabetes, weakness, senility, joint or bone diseases, and heart disease. It is essential to keep an open dialogue with a veterinarian to discuss any potential health issues aging pets may encounter.

According to veterinary behaviorist Nicholas Dodman, coauthor of “Good Old Dog: Expert Advice for Keeping Your Aging Dog Healthy, Happy and Comfortable,” pet owners must realize that older pets are less able to thermoregulate, so they’re more sensitive to extreme temperature changes.

Pets may need blankets or sweaters. They also may need to spend more time indoors when the weather is harsh.

Dietary changes may need to be made. Older pets may eat less, but they should be fed high-quality, nutritious foods that help keep their weight in check.

Excess weight can put added stress on sensitive joints and may contribute to problems with diabetes.

Veterinary Pet Insurance, a division of Nationwide Insurance Company, says there are new, alternative treatments available for aging pets, often used to treat pain, pet arthritis and cancer. Cold laser treatment directs light to stimulate cells and increase blood circulation to ease aches and pains.

Medical acupuncture can help reduce pain and

inflammation.

Radiosurgery can target cancerous tissue with a very high dose of targeted radiation while avoiding doses to surrounding tissue. In addition, monoclonal antibodies can be attached to cancer cells to boost natural immunity to cancer and germs.

Older pets require different care and more patience.

Owners of aging pets should speak with their veterinarians about caring for pets as they grow older.

Understanding feline diabetes Diabetes is a condition most often associated with humans. But this potentially debilitating disease can even affect pets, including the family cat.

Feline diabetes can greatly affect cats’ quality of life. The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine estimates that between 0.2 and 1 percent of cats in the general population suffer from feline diabetes. While that’s a low number, the potential dangers faced by cats with undiagnosed cases of feline diabetes makes it imperative that cat owners understand this disease and how to recognize it.

What is diabetes?

The cells in a cat’s body require sugar in the form of glucose for energy. Glucose in the blood requires the hormone insulin, which serves as something of a key that unlocks the doors to the cells, making them capable of employing the glucose for energy. The insulin attaches to the cells and lets the body know when to absorb the glucose. That process is essential for muscle function. When a cat has type 1 diabetes, glucose concentrations are high because of a decrease in insulin production. Type 2 diabetes, which is more common among felines than type 1, occurs when glucose levels are high because the cells are not responding to the insulin in an appropriate way.

What are some signs that may indicate the presence of feline diabetes?

Diabetes deprives the body of a necessary energy source, so when cats are suffering from diabetes, be it type 1 or type 2, weight loss is likely to occur. That weight loss occurs because cats’ bodies will turn to sources other than glucose for energy. In these instances, the body breaks down fats and proteins, resulting in weight loss.

The CUCVM notes that this weight loss occurs even though cats’ appetites increase.

Excessive thirst and urination is another potential indicator of feline diabetes. Cats’ bodies respond to elevated levels of glucose in their blood by excreting excessive amounts of the glucose in their urine. That high concentration of glucose in the urine pulls excessive amounts of water into the urine. According to the CUCVM, this results in increased urine volume, increased urinary water loss, a higher likelihood of dehydration, and an increase in thirst.

Some cats experience nerve damage in their hind limbs as a result of feline diabetes. However, the CUCVM notes that this is a rare occurrence.

Pet Care Reasons a mutt should be your next dog “Mutt” and “mongrel” have long had negative connotations, but there’s no need to turn one’s nose at mixed breed dogs.

Dogs of any kind, regardless of lineage, can be cherished companions who offer years of tireless love and affection. In fact, mutts have gained steam as dogs of choice thanks to new, more trendy monikers, such as “designer dogs” or “cross-bred pups.” In addition, many well-recognized purebred dogs popular today were likely once amalgams of different breeds that were carefully crafted to acquire the desirable traits of popular breeds.

Many mixed-breed dogs are beautiful, well-behaved pets. The American Veterinary Medical Association states that 36.5 percent of American households have dogs. Many of those pooches are mixed-breed dogs.

Here’s a look at what can make mutts stand-out pets. · Healthy pup: Mixed-breed dogs may not be prone to genetic diseases specific to one particular breed and may be less likely to develop an inherited disorder.

According to Dog Reference, something called “hybrid vigor” explains how a mutt’s mixed ancestry makes it hardier and more robust. The average lifespan of a mutt is longer than that of most purebred canines. This

doesn’t replace the need for quality veterinary care, however. · Life-saving choice: Animal shelters are often bursting at the seams with mutts. Choosing to adopt a mixedbreed dog can reduce overpopulation and ensure that dogs will not be euthanized. · Affordability: Mutts are typically more affordable than pure breeds because a person is not paying for lineage, show titles and AKC registration. Some mutts actually may be free if a family is giving away puppies. · Unique qualities: No two mixed-breed dogs are the same - even among litter mates. That individuality can be an advantage. · Moderated traits: Many purebred dogs were bred to serve specific purposes of the breed. A Border Collie, for example, is designed to herd and requires rigorous exercise to remain healthy both physically and mentally.

Stripped of that primary job, a dog might be destructive or become depressed. Comprised of different breeds, a mutt may have a less intense drive to fulfill its breed standards, perhaps making it a more easygoing pet. · Trendy: Thanks to puggles and labradoodles, it’s now chic to have a mutt.

Mixed-breed dogs can be the ideal puppy pets and can be a first stop in one’s search for a new canine pal.

4-H Members Participate At Communications Events On Saturday, April 27th, the Capital District 4-H Public Presentations and Regional Horse Communications contests were held at Tamarac High School.

4-H members representing Albany, Columbia/ Greene, Fulton/Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schoharie, Washington, and Warren counties presented on a variety of topics to volunteer evaluators.

Representing the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County 4-H program at the Capital District 4-H Public Presentations event was Emilee Roadcap of Troy. Emilee received a blue certificate for her presentation entitled, “The Rabbit Breeding Cycle”.

At the Regional 4-H Horse Communications contest, the Cornell Cooperative Extension Rensselaer County 4-H program was represented by: Brigham Logue of Johnsonville who placed first in the senior individual presentation category with his presentation “Bale Out”; James Czub of Schaghticoke placed second in the senior individual presentation with his presentation “Ranch Horse”. In the Junior Division, Abigail Trinkle of Nassau and Kaylie Millar of West Sand Lake placed first with their team presentation “Is It Worth It, Yay or Neigh”. Rensselaer City Historian’s Office seeking info. on Albany Woolen Mill Rensselaer City Historian’s Office is seeking any information on the Albany Woolen Mill on Green Street in Rensselaer City.

Personal remembrances, receipts, documents, advertisements, pay stubs, anything related to the AWM. We are told AWM once manufactured Woolen sweaters and perhaps jackets for the US military during World War II. From time to time there was Surplus sales of irregular garments.

Park Improvements Continue for the Town of E.G. Improvements continue for the Parks in East Greenbush. A new playground will be built at the Town Park. The old playground will be coming down in the next few weeks and the new playground should be complete within the first few weeks of June. Please use caution in this area of the park during demolition and construction. Other improvements at the Town park include paving of the new parking lot and the road inside the park and light posts along the road.

Improvements have begun at Woodland Park as well. The fencing has been removed, a new

Rensselaer County Teens complete district wide 4-H Tractor Safety Program April 22-24, 2019.

Rensselaer Co. Youth Attend 4-H Tractor Safety Program Ten Rensselaer County residents participated in the annual 4-H Tractor Safety Program. Over the course of three days, youth from across the Capital District learned about the hazards of agricultural work by participating in a presentation by the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH) and by visiting local farms and business. The participants were also able to learn, and practice skills related to safe operation of agricultural machinery such as tractors, ATV’s and skid steers.

On the final day of the program they were evaluated by written exam, practical skills, and tractor driving.

Upon successful completion the participants were given their Hazardous Occupations Safety Training in Agriculture (HOSTA) certification. Youth who complete this course are better prepared to work in an agricultural workplace and operate agricultural machinery that are appropriate for their skill level.

Rensselaer County participants included: Ian Giannone, Ben Howard, Josiah Howard, Sam Herrick Jr, Jamison Miller, Jessie Cameron, Wyatt Cameron, Lane Pelletier, Brayden McMillan, and Konnor McMillan.

DEC Advises New Yorkers to Remove Bird Feeders to Prevent Attracting Bears The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) reminded New Yorkers to take steps to prevent bears from easily accessing food sources like bird feeders and garbage.

Due to poor natural food availability last fall, many black bears went into their dens with low fat reserves and as they begin to emerge from winter dens, have already begun seeking out food sources around homes.

DEC has already received several reports that bears are knocking down bird feeders to eat the seed. Feeding bears either intentionally, which is illegal, or unintentionally through careless practices around properties, has consequences for entire communities. DEC advises everyone who lives in or visits bear country to remove items that are attractive to bears. People should take down bird feeders by April 1, store garbage inside secure buildings, and feed pets indoors. Allowing bears to find food naturally keeps them out of trouble and reduces negative interactions with people and property.

Again, the Dewey Loeffel Hazardous Waste Site on Mead Road in the Town of Nassau, is in the headlines, as the full extent of the contamination continues to expand. It has been a concern since the 1950’s and is so complex that remediation efforts still continue today.

The site, with over 46,000 tons of hazardous chemical mixtures, has contaminated area soils, groundwater and waterways, including the Valatie Kill, Nassau Lake and Kinderhook Lake.

In the 1980’s the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) was the lead agency holding General Electric and two other companies accountable for the contamination. Remediation work was performed, including placing a soil cap on top and a slurry wall around the landfill in 1984. This work proved insufficient, as the landfill continued to leak chemicals into the groundwater and waterways, and was listed as a Class 2 hazardous waste site (significant threat to public health and the environment).

Due to a lack in the remediation progress at this site, UNCAGED (United Neighbors Concerned About General Electric & Dewey Loeffel Landfill) was formed in 2000, keeping concerns of this site in the forefront and to monitor and respond to all aspects of this landfill clean-up process.

NYS DEC had the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) place this site on the Superfund list on the US National Priority Listings in 2011. UNCAGED continues to be instrumental in providing continued oversight of the remediation process. Our efforts include continued review of the procedures and testing protocols being used for contaminated soils and waters, and meetings with EPA Representatives to discuss these concerns and the progress of the remediation.

After 19 years of advocating for a full cleanup of the site, UNCAGED continues to interact with all levels of Government, as well as community groups, with a strong grassroots approach. Unfortunately, Neighbors, there is STILL the need to advocate for a full cleanup, as this is the only way to ensure a sustainable future for this area.

Memoirs of an Amnesiac: Masked Crusaders In my opinion, the 1950s were the golden age of two-fisted TV heroes. Brooding anti-heroes came later; for now, it was still easy to spot the good guys. And the airwaves were full of them: cowboys, cops, spacemen, soldiers, knights, and one with superpowers. Among my favorites was the swashbuckling Zorro, title character of the Walt Disney series (1957-9).

In the story, mild-mannered student Don Diego de la Vega is summoned home to 1820s California, to help oppose a corrupt politician who’s oppressing the people.

(Some things never change.) By day he’s a nerdy disappointment; at night he wears a mask and cape, and fights injustice with secret sword-fighting skills. A simple mask

is disguise enough to keep people from guessing Zorro’s true identity. The fact that Zorro first appears around the same time as Don Diego doesn’t seem to arouse suspicion. Never mind that was for grownups to ponder. At age 7, all I wanted was to enjoy the action.

That Halloween my twin brother and I both went trick-or-treating as Zorro, and it was the greatest costume I ever owned. Mom bought a pair of black jeans with a matching jacket for each of us. Everything else she had to make by hand—times two! For people who answered the doorbell that night, it must have been amusing to see two little Zorro’s standing there.

Use of my cape, mask, and cummerbund tapered off after Halloween. But the jeans and jacket remained the cornerstone of my wardrobe for months. Finally, there came a sad day when I could no longer squeeze into them.

For the first time, I was aware that a chapter in my life had closed. I was getting old. Eventually the show itself went off the air. One horrible night it was replaced by “The Donna Reed Show”. “This can’t be happening!” Yet, I knew deep down that “Zorro” could not go on forever.

It was fun while it lasted, and it’s still fun to remember.

Reduce Plastic Pollution The Advertiser and Times Union ran a set of photos last week that illustrated our plastic pollution problem in an ironic way: several people are picking up litter while wearing single use plastic rain ponchos that will end up in the trash. We all need to reduce plastic pollution, in our own lives and in our communities, as speaker Judith Enck explained at the Poestenkill Firehouse on May 4 to a crowd of more than 90 people. The public information event was sponsored by the Poestenkill Democratic Committee. Judith Enck, a 34-year resident of Poestenkill who spent 7 years during the Obama Administration as Region 2 EPA Administrator, is now a senior fellow at Bennington College and founder there of Beyond Plastics. The project works with community leaders, college students, and concerned citizens to put policy changes in place that will save us from the plastics crisis plaguing our oceans and landfills and health. just passed a ban on single use plastic bags and Albany County has a food service polystyrene ban, as examples like many across the country in recent years. Ultimately systemic changes like cradle to grave pricing to reflect environmental costs of products, and requirements that supermarkets or on-line vendors take back packaging to be recycled, are the bigger picture. But for now, let’s find ways to reduce plastics as a personal contribution to moving beyond them. Whiteview Road Condos and Gas Pipeline The North Greenbush Planning Board Meeting drew the attention of town residents concerned about the aggressive actions of a developer with plans to place 140 condos off Whiteview Road. While the Planning Board has yet to approve the proposal, the developer clear cut acres of trees piling them up along the roadside as tall as a house. The Times Union has a story which you can read online at their website.

It seems our Town Board has not passed a land use regulation to prevent the developer’s action. Hence, if the project is not approved, the landscape has been forever altered. Two members of the Town Board attended the meeting, and both are running for supervisor. Neither offered any criticism of the developer’s actions.

The project is surrounded by single family homes, but our town has designated this area R3 meaning large scale condos are now permitted. Most residents are perplexed as to how this was allowed. This is an example of government of by and for the development interests and not the residents who will see dramatic increases in traffic should the project be completed.

Finally, a gas pipeline is being proposed by National Grid which would run thru North and East Greenbush.

It would override provisions of our zoning code and use fracked gas at the expense of other states’ residents.

The destructive effects of fracking are well documented which is why it is banned in NY state. The East Greenbush Supervisor has opposed it as have I in a public hearing. Our town board has remained silent. There is no upside for town as the gas company has already stated there will be no expansion of gas service to parts of our town that have none. ~Ron Sinico, North Greenbush, NY

Any student from Averill Park High School looking to enter the field of Art + Design at The Sage Colleges is eligible for a $5,000 yearly scholarship for a total of $20,000 over four years. Additionally, a $5,000 scholarship (total of $20,000 over four years) is offered to Averill Park students interested in majoring in Education at The Sage Colleges. Local Student David Sills Performs in West Side Story CLINTON, NY -- David Sills, of East Greenbush (12061), was a member of the orchestra in the Hamilton College Spring Theatre production of West Side Story, based on a conception of Jerome Robbins, book by Arthur Laurents, music

by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Professor of Theatre Mark Cryer directed the play, and a live orchestra conducted by Heather Buchman accompanied the performance.

The classic American musical received an update with the Theatre Department’s production.

His association, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, has financed virulent ads on TV, radio, newspaper and bus shelters in the Washington, D.C area, to get people to stop eating bacon, because it is a cause of colon cancer. “The message is, `Bacon is the new tobacco.’

The ads focused especially on communities hit hardest by colorectal cancer. The colorectal cancer rate in poorer neighborhoods is triple that of wealthier areas. “There is also a marked racial disparity, with rates among African Americans in the district nearly triple that for whites.”, the committee reports. Kiwanis Pasta Dinner “All-You-Can-Eat” Fundraiser The Sand Lake Kiwanis Club wants to invite all to participate in a Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser on Saturday, May 11th, from 4PM to 7PM at the West Sand Lake Fire House on Rt. 43. Jim Gaudet and the Railroad Boys return to the Sand Lake Center for the Arts

(Westfield, MA, April 26) –Capital Region athletes skated past their disabilities and scored a winning goal for equal opportunity in sports on Friday at Amelia Park Arena. The Capital District Sled Warriors, a program of STRIDE Adaptive Sports in West Sand Lake, won their first tournament in five years with a thrilling double overtime goal in the championship game against the New York Rangers at the 21st Annual New England Invitational Sled Hockey Tournament. Captain Stefon Stillwell captured the winning goal in a 6-5 victory. Earlier in the season, the team also competed in the NYS Empire State Winter Games in Lake Placid, winning a silver medal.

The 21st Annual New England Invitational Sled Hockey Tournament is held at the Amelia Park Rink in Westfield, MA. Sixteen teams from Delaware to Ontario, Canada, competed in junior and adult divisions for the Amelia Cup Championship Trophy.

The team (originally Bethlehem Sled Hockey) was founded by Tom and Kim Wilson of Slingerlands for their son and other teenagers with physical disabilities twelve years ago to make hockey accessible to those with lower limb disabilities. STRIDE Adaptive sports took over the fledgling team in 2009, and the team has grown exponentially since then. Just as fast-paced and physical as stand-up hockey, sled hockey follows most of the typical ice hockey rules with the exception of equipment.

Players sit in specially designed sleds that sit on top of two hockey skate blades, and each player uses two sticks instead of one. The team is now made up of 15 members plus 2 pushers with a varsity and junior varsity squad and includes numerous wounded warrior veterans.

Newcomers are invited to join the team on the ice to try a sled on the first weekend of practice each month.

Bell Top Elementary School Accepting “Wall of Fame” Nominees The East Greenbush Central Schools’ Bell Top Elementary School is preparing for the Annual Bell Ringers Wall of Fame. This honor is bestowed upon former Bell Top students who have attained significant accomplishments in the criteria areas of Academics, the Arts, Citizenship, or Athletics. According to the school’s selection committee, any citizen may nominate a former Bell Top student whom they believe has made an outstanding achievement and/or commitment in any of the criteria area.

The District’s June 2018 Columbia High School graduates will automatically be recognized and inducted to the school’s Wall of Fame if they have graduated Valedictorian, Salutatorian, or earned Summa Cum Laude honors.
