East Greenbush Supervisor’s Report As the last vestiges of winter recede, we’re looking forward to an exciting Spring and Summer! For the Town that means resuming the major push to improve the Town Park that began with the construction of the Red Barn. In the next two months, lights will be installed and the parking lot paved. In addition, the Town Board approved the purchase, installation and surfacing of a new playground for the Town Park, as well as funding to pave Town Park Road from the entrance of the Park to the circle. The Town Park is a beautiful setting for recreational activities. With significant improvements in the park and the coming Albany-Hudson Electric Trail, the recreational landscape of the Town is changing in exciting ways. The Town Board passed a resolution opposing National Grid’s Pipeline E37 Reliability and Resiliency Project, which will follow a route of more than four miles under the Town of East Greenbush. National Grid conceded that there was no direct immediate benefit to the Town, and the Town Board felt that the risks associated with a natural gas pipeline outweighed any potential advantages down the line. We also made a point of protesting the used of fracked gas in the pipeline and wondered why National Grid continues to make 50-year commitments to fossil fuels at a time when

the search for alternative sources of energy must take precedence. We approved the paving list for 2019. Our Department of Public Works has inventoried and rated every road in Town; our paving strategy is to start with the roads that need the most attention. The following roads will be paved this year: Carvill Lane, Delehunt Drive, Elliot Avenue, Fieldcrest Drive, Foxwood Circle, Glaz Street, Hartfield Court, Hemlock Lane, Huntswood Drive, Jodon Drive, Johnny Circle, Kristen Court, Marble Road, Mill Run, New Road, Patroon Lane, Pineview Lane, Tamarack Lane, Town Park Road, and Tyler Drive. Several different techniques will be used to improve these roads. I wish we could do more, but the need for paving greatly exceeds the resources available to meet that need. ~Jack Conway, East Greenbush Town Supervisor

Park Improvements Continue for the Town of East Greenbush Improvements continue for the Parks in East Greenbush. A new playground will be built at the Town Park. The old playground will be coming down in the next few weeks and the new playground should be complete within the first few weeks of June.

Please use caution in this area of the park during demolition and construction. Other improvements at the Town park include paving of the new parking lot and the road inside the park and light posts along the road. Improvements have begun at Woodland Park as well. The fencing has been removed, a new gazebo will be placed in the park along with some picnic tables and seating. Any playground equipment that is dangerous and beyond repair will be removed. The basketball court will be cleaned up and hoops repaired. Fresh landscaping, shrubs and flowers will be planted, and a small parking area developed to implement safety and a more aesthetically appealing neighborhood park. All Park improvements are guided by the Town’s updated 2016 Amenities Plan. For questions or concerns, please contact the Community and Recreation Office at 518-4774194.

Towns to draft law on vacant buildings East Greenbush, Brunswick target abandoned homes By KENNETH C. CROWE II

The Town Board is considering a law to require vacant homes be registered, subject to a fee and maintained so they don’t become eyesores. The Brunswick draft legislation calls for vacancy registry fees rising from $1,000 to $5,000 over five years for smaller buildings and from $2,000 to $10,000 over the same period for larger buildings. After five years, the highest fee is

assessed annually if the building continues to be vacant. The town also requires the property be maintained. Officials say the town has at least 30 vacant homes. While Brunswick is on its way to possibly be the first suburban Rensselaer County town to enact a vacant buildings registry law, which are common in cities, nearby East Greenbush has started work on drafting its own local law.

“Our situation here in Brunswick is that there are abandoned homes. People just moved out,” Supervisor Phil Herrington said Monday. The town has found “zombie” properties in its Sycaway neighborhood adjacent to Troy. The term describes houses that sit empty after a bank forecloses but does not take immediate action to sell the property. East Greenbush Supervisor

Jack Conway said his community is planning to write a vacant building registry law with a goal of pushing for redevelopment along the Columbia Turnpike, as routes 9 and 20 are known. “It’s part of a multi-prong strategy for Columbia Turnpike. We’re trying to clean it up,” Conway said. In the Sycaway neighborhood, vacant houses are more noticeable due to the buildings being built Please see VACANT 8

closer together, said Brunswick Assessor Steve Rooney. “They’re just sitting there for a long time. It’s a danger. It impacts other residences,” Rooney said, adding a warning that vacant homes also can hurt home values if properties sit vacant too long. The town has 5,764 housing units and 12,499 residents as of 2017, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The Brunswick Town Board will hold a public hearing at its 6:30 p.m. May 9 meeting at Town Hall on the draft vacant building registry. Rooney said the town’s aim for the law is to “keep it relatively simple.” That includes taking into account homeowners who spend the winter in warmer states, leaving their homes locked up for months. Herrington said the town has moved cautiously to ensure problems are not created by swiftly enacting the local law. Brunswick has drawn upon vacant building registry laws in the cities of Rensselaer and Troy in drafting its own proposal. kcrowe@timesunion.com - 518-454-5084 - @KennethCrowe CONTINUED FROM 3

Cropseyville Resident Colin Claus Returns from Intensive Research Project WORCESTER, MA -- Colin Claus of Cropseyville, N.Y, a member of the class of 2019 majoring in civil engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), was a member of a student team that recently completed an intense, hands-on research project in Massachusetts. The project was titled Park Avenue Redesign. In their project summary, the students wrote, “This project, on behalf of Stantec, Inc., aimed to redesign a section of Park Avenue in Worcester, MA with the goal of improving safety, efficiency, accessibility, and appearance.” At WPI, all undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project addressing a challenge in their major field of study. About two-thirds of students complete a project at one of the university’s more than 50 off-campus project centers, which are located around the world. A signature element of the innovative undergraduate experience at WPI, the project-based curriculum offers students the opportunity to apply their scientific and technical knowledge to develop thoughtful solutions to real problems that affect the quality of people’s lives-and make a difference before they graduate.

News from Averill Park CSD Claire Flynn was named a Top 5 finalist to sing the National Anthem at a Tri-City ValleyCats baseball game this season. The ValleyCats held a contest at Crossgates Mall and then held an online vote for the five finalists. Way to go Claire! Rose Jokiel sold banana bread to students and teachers and collected donations at her church to raise money to create homemade Easter baskets for the homeless. Rose raised more than $500. This was a great idea! In total, 42 students at Poestenkill Elementary had stories selected to be a part of the “Spooky Sagas” series. Stellar job by everyone and by their teacher, Ms. Wendell! Roughly 70 percent of single vehicle accidents are tire-related. Taking tire maintenance seriously can greatly reduce the chances of blowouts, accidents and fatalities. Maintain the right pressure Caring for tires not only improves safety, but also it extends the life of the tires, saving drivers money as a result. Michelin Tires says that simply checking the tires’ inflation pressure can make a significant difference in how long tires last. For example, a tire that is consistently 20 percent under-inflated may see its life expectancy reduced by 20 percent. Tires that are not properly inflated also can have a high rolling resistance.

In such instance, the engine must expend more effort to move the vehicle — thus eating up fuel. Pressure should be checked at ambient temperature before driving, states AAA. The recommended inflation pressure can be found in the drivers manual or on the tire. Check tire tread Tires rely on good tread depth to maintain traction and shed water during wet conditions. AAA recommends checking tread with a visual inspection and with the “quarter test.” Insert a quarter into a tread groove with the top of Washington’s head facing down. If the top of his head is not visible, the tires have at least 4⁄32” of tread and are acceptable for

Some manufacturers state after six years, while others say 10 years is the maximum service life for tires. The Brunswick Cares Food Pantry provides these bags to the food insecure families in our area who regularly utilize the pantry for extra support. Bags are for children 3-14 years of age in the month of their birthday. The Brunswick Cares Food Pantry is open 5-7 pm on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings 9-11am at 42 White Church Lane, Troy, NY, 12180. The pantry would like to extend a special thank you to the AMS Service Club! recent purchase of Cowee Forests, more than 9000 acres of which are on the Rensselaer Plateau. This week’s most dedicated athlete is Morgan Mason. Morgan plays third base and first base on the Varsity Baseball team. Morgan has played baseball for 14 years, after he started playing the sport when he was 4 years old. Morgan’s favorite part of the sport is “the friendships built, and just the game of baseball in general.” Morgan always looks to do his best to help his team excel. He says he feels achievement whenever he is contributing to his team such as “being able to get hits and help do whatever possible in order to make my team be successful.” However, Morgan finds the most difficult aspect of the sport when he and his team do not find success. When this happens, he says you have to forget about it and keep moving forward. In order to prepare for this season, Morgan spent time conditioning and weightlifting during the offseason. He hopes that his efforts will help his team go as far as they can this season. Morgan works hard both for his sport and his education. Morgan has maintained an average of 88 throughout high school. This year, he is taking courses such as Physics, Pre-Calculus, and Engineering Drawing and Design. Morgan’s efforts were recognized last year when he was awarded the scholar athlete award at the baseball banquet last year. In the future, Morgan will be attending the College of Saint Rose, and he will play baseball there. Morgan would like to thank his parents and coaches as they “always are on my side and support me and push me to be better.” Additionally, Morgan wishes to leave a piece of advice for younger athletes: “Put forth as much effort as you can, and to never give up no matter what because slumps can be overcome. Even if you think you aren’t good enough, if you grind and practice hard, you will become better than good enough.” We wish Morgan the best as he ends his high school career and begins college next August. Olympics in July and August. Registration and more information at www.aproadrunners.com. Registration fee includes a uniform $90, 4/9-5/8; $10 sibling discount. Membership in the U.S. Track and Field Association ($20) is required and provides insurance coverage. Contact tfcoaches@aproadrunners.com for help with registration or questions. We’re a parent-run organization, and parental involvement is required. All abilities and skill levels are welcome. See you at the track!

Perennial Plants Needed The Sand Lake Garden Club is holding its annual plant sale on Saturday, MAY 11, and we could use some perennials from your garden if you have some to share. Members from the club will actually come and help dig and separate plants to be potted prior to the sale. Please note that some plants may be rejected due either to inclusion on the State’s invasive list or to their commonality. Proceeds from this sale are used to fund the Club’s student scholarship. Please call Helen at 518-674-3571 to arrange for a perennial dig.

SLGC Annual Plant Sale- Sat., May 11th The Sand Lake Garden Club will hold its annual plant sale on Saturday, May 11th, at the Salem United Methodist Church, Shaver Rd., West Sand Lake, from 8am ‘til sold out (approximately 10:30am). Vegetables, annuals, perennials, herbs, and shrubs will be sold. There will be a raffle with a chance to win a gift certificate to a local nursery. Bring a wagon/box for your purchases. Proceeds from the plant sale are used to provide scholarships to high school students from the community.

Please bundle all brush into 4’ long bundles, and leaves must be in biodegradable bags. Please place all items on edge of the road. Do not place bags of leaves or bundles of brush on pavement, or in front of culverts, or on top of catch basins. If you miss these dates, you may bring the bags to the Transfer Station with proof of address and they will gladly take them. Thank you, Scott Gallerie, Commissioner Department of Public Works

Glendora Vegetarian Club

A man said he was so ugly as a kid that his mother hired a neighbor child to play his part in the home movies. Similarly, Glendora could not find enough classmates for her high school reunion. She had to invite friends to play their part. So, 19 of us gathered at the international dining room, Lee Hall, American International College, Springfield, Massachusetts. Just 4 of us made it as alumni of the class of 1946, Classical High School. Fifteen Glendora friends filled in for the rest. The staff of vegan chefs of American International College created an exciting vegan entre and vegan dessert. We rejected the butter and bread because they were not vegan. The tab was picked up by the Glendora Vegetarian Club $240. The guests came from as far as Philadelphia and White Plains. Glendora told jokes the way she used to in high school. Crawford related his career as President of G and C Merriam, publishers of Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary. Dr. Gordon, a Harvard PhD, recounted his scintillating career as a lecturer in psychology. So, at 90 years old, IV of us out of 323 made our 73rd high school reunion. ~Glendora 518-610-5810

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

I took a walk along the Hudson river shore. Just as I had done so many times, before. But this time off the beaten trail, between the river and the rail. Now let me tell you what eye sore. There’s a plastic bottle and a little baby doll. There’s a piece of driftwood and a tennis ball. No chipmunk or frog I heard. I saw no squirrel, fish, or bird. Just another plastic bottle and tennis ball. And there’s another plastic bottle and some broken styrofoam, and another plastic bottle, and a small plastic comb, and another plastic bottle, and a tiny plastic gnome, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, and another plastic bottle, ~By Michael Cramer Castleton, NY

A Tale of Two Boys It was a Saturday... First sunny and warm day of the year. One boy spent the afternoon at baseball practice; He was catching fly balls. The other boy rambled about with his Grandpa; He was catching frogs!

Burden Lake Junior Ambassadors of Golf Ron Choquette came up to Burden lake from the Jersey Shore in 1983. For over 30 years, Ron taught Juniors how to play the game of golf. Some Juniors went on to play in College and one became a PGA Professional. Over 2500 kids learned the game of Golf from Ron. This summer, Ron is coming out of retirement to run the Junior Golf Program. As a kickoff to summer, we are offering an award

for two junior golfers as BLCC Ambassadors of Golf. The two ambassadors will get a free membership to Burden Lake Country Club, a set of golf clubs and the chance to meet PGA Professionals at the Traveler’s Championship in Hartford, Connecticut. To participate for the Junior Ambassador of Golf, you must be between the age of 10 to 17 and a resident of Rensselaer County. We have a questionnaire to fill out on our website, www.burdenlakecountryclub.com. All ques-

The first had the best of equipment And a team of coaches. The frogger had his net And Grandpa shouting encouragement. The baseball coaches were quite demanding... They sought perfection with repetitive drills. Other than offering safety hints, Grandpa let the other boy play. Now, both boys profited From their sunny day experience: Both baseball and nature play Are good for young boys. But when Grandpa suggested another outdoor adventure, The young baseball player asked to go along...!!! ~Lloyd Barnhart West Sand Lake, NY

You Don’t Say Among the wise old sayings, is this one I most dread: Three can keep a secret if two of them are dead. Another “words of wisdom” that fill my heart with rage: “Age is just a number” when somehow they learn my age. Worst of all are when you meet a mourner face to face And blurt out these cruel words: “he’s in a better place.” Words can bind us together, words can tear us apartBut the words that affect us the most, are the words that come from the heart. ~Sylvia Honig Wynantskill, NY

Looking forward from memory You remember, don’t you? Welcome pussy willows, snowdrops, crocus, daffodils, forsythia. Our northeast sunshine o’erhead. Bright symbols of season changing Hope in new blossoms, leaves, planted seeds and bulbs. Sunshine and rain, our effort combining for a happening. ~Nancy W. Davis, April 2019 Averill Park, NY

Zero Emission Vehicles Global climate change and other energy saving initiatives occupy the public dialogue. Foremost among alternatives are “electric cars” and “zero emission vehicles.” Electric vehicles produce zero emissions in their operation, but the question remains: What is the source of energy for recharging electric, zero emission vehicles? Electricity is energy which must be produced by deliberate design or action. The falls at Niagara drain six million cubic feet of water from Lake Erie into Lake Ontario every minute. They have been harnessed via a massive hydro-electric power plant to provide “clean” energy. Yet hydro power provides only a fraction of America’s energy. The majority of this nation’s electric power still comes from a combination of nuclear and fossil fuel generating plants. Each time an electric vehicle is recharged, the electrons required to do so originate at a generating plant powered by fossil fuels or nuclear energy. Electricity doesn’t magically appear out of nothingness as readymade clean energy. When an electric vehicle is plugged in to charge, there is a massive generating plant at the far end of that electric cord. A zero-emission vehicle requires energy input into its manufacture, continual recharging and maintenance. Zero emission vehicles sound great, but there just ain’t no free lunch. Steve Sevits East Greenbush, NY promote junior golf in the area. Ron made a commitment to Junior Golf a long

time ago, and we plan to keep the commitment in the future. by Jeff Scherer
