YOUR WEEKLY GUIDE TO NEWS AND SHOPPING

Join the Greenbush Historical Society on Sunday, April 14, 2019, 2 PM, at the East Greenbush Community Library, for Jim Cochran’s presentation, “Military Ballooning in the Civil War.” After a brief international history of ballooning, Jim will focus on military ballooning in the United States, starting with an interesting flight in Albany in 1833. Three aeronautics, including one from Troy, NY, were most responsible for the U.S. Balloon Corps and each competed to be its commander. The interesting role of balloon reconnaissance during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862-1863 will be examined. In many ways, the Civil War Balloon Corps can be called the first U.S. Air Force. Our guest speaker Jim Cochran is a retired literature teacher and amateur United States historian who is very interested in the Civil War and local historic people, places, and events. The program is free and open to the public. Please register with the library at 518-477-7476 as seating is limited.

Waste find prompts visit

Added contamination needs to be addressed, two congressmen say By SARA CLINE

Town Supervisor David Fleming stood in front of the Dewey Loeffel Superfund Site. Behind him was a sign that read “Danger! Hazardous Waste!” More than 46,000 tons of industrial hazardous waste, including solvents, waste oils, PCBs, sludge and solids, were dumped there, Fleming said. And for decades Nassau residents have dealt with its effects -- unsafe drinking water and health problems, including cancer clusters, Fleming said. “Tragic,” said U.S. Rep. Paul

Tonko, who visited the site with fellow Rep. Antonio Delgado on Friday, just a few weeks after the Environmental Protection Agency notified the town that there is now another site, believed to be related to the Loeffel site, testing positive for contamination. “The latest contamination has provided an opportunity where we can sit down at the table and talk about the reality and how we can serve the people that we are here to serve,” Delgado said. “It’s about protecting public health.” Fleming received notification

by the EPA Regional Administrator on March 14 that more contamination was found at the Loeffel property at 5525 County Route 203. The discovery included a buried 10,000-gallon chemical tank, as well as a PCB-tainted pond and trichloroethylene (TCE), a human carcinogen, in ground water. According to town assessment records, the 8.8-acre property near Sweets Crossing Road includes the Loeffel home, which is owned by Carol Loeffel, the Please see WASTE 8

Calls publicized to start suicide dialogue East Greenbush police release details of nine recent distress cases By STAFF REPORTS

Town police said they handled several mental health emergency calls in recent days, and that all nine residents were safely admitted to area hospitals for treatment. A year ago, Chief Christopher Lavin started periodically releasing basic information about suicidal residents and how police respond to their needs, most often de-escalating the situation and getting them treatment. The recent list East Greenbush police released is similar to the information they have provided to the public in the past. Lavin said in a March 2018 interview with the Times Union that he doesn’t think it should take a tragedy to coax his community into

talking about suicide. The sheer number of selfharm cases police respond to every day should be enough, he said. “It’s important to know these events are going on,” Lavin said. He said they don’t always result in horrific tragedies, “but they often become smaller emergencies that affect the person, their family and the community.” His continued approach is a stark departure from how most law enforcement agencies deal with such cases. Typically, police only talk about a self-inflicted injury or suicide when it happens in public, puts someone else at risk, or involves a public figure. “In most communities there has to be a problem for any action to happen,” Lavin said. He wants the conversation to start earlier --

even if people are resistant. “Some people ask, ‘How could you talk about that? How could you let the community know someone on their street tries to hang themselves or overdosed?’” Lavin said. His answer: “It’s not only lawful but it’s beneficial for the larger community to know.” These are the latest cases: A 60-year-old town man contacted his health care provider saying he was fighting depression and that he kept dwelling on ways to kill himself. Sgt. Ernest Tubbs made contact, taking the man into protective custody. A mother called 911 when her 17-year-old daughter complained of weakness and depression and couldn’t get out of bed. Officer Marie Abraham responded, and the girl eventually Please see DIALOGUE 8

Over the past decade, the Averill Park Senior Class has put on a proud and memorable tradition known as the Mr. AP competition. The first Mr. AP was Adam Polonski in 2004, and most recently, in 2018, Adam Johnson took home the title. This “variety show” provides contestants with an opportunity to demonstrate their best qualities as well as challenge themselves out of their comfort zone. During the event, each contestant is tasked to showcase a talent, participate in

student-choreographed dance numbers, and answer character-based questions. The judges have the even harder task of determining which contestant best personifies the spirit of Averill Park High School. While there will be plenty of laughs, there is a lot more to the Mr. AP competition than just the immense comedic tone portrayed throughout the night. It’s an event that promotes volunteerism within the community and a cohesiveness of the

senior class. This year’s contestants are: Austin Bradway, Martin Bond, Anthony Carucci, Henry Crawley, Matthew Gaston, Thomas Hacker, Nathaniel Jamison, Matthew Kenneally, Nicholas Maggio, and Cole Swahlan. Who will be this year’s Mr. AP? Find out at 7:00pm on Friday, April 12th, in the APHS Auditorium. Tickets at $10.

79-year-old daughter-in-law of Dewey Loeffel. Fleming said the newly found contamination several miles south of the landfill is believed to be related to Loeffel operations decades ago -- perhaps as a staging area for trucks. The town immediately began notifying residents who may be affected and providing bottled water, Fleming said. Fleming said he himself went from house to house knocking on doors. He said his heart sank telling people. Some said they were horrified, others said “here we go again.” Twenty-six private wells were tested in the area for new contamination, and the preliminary results found none have dangerous levels of chemicals such as PCB. Three wells were found to have TCE present, but levels were low enough for safe human consumption. Fleming said the EPA is continuing its investigation into the extent of contamination, and results from the well tests still need to be finalized. Unfortunately this is not new to residents. “We’ve been living with this for an entire generation,” Fleming said. The approximately 19-acre Loeffel landfill off Mead Road is was used as a dump in the 1950s and 1960s, much of it hazardous waste carried in by haulers for several firms including General Electric Co., Bendix Corporation, which is now Honeywell, and Schenectady Chemicals, which is now SI Group. The materials were dumped into a lagoon, an oil pit and drum burial area, according to the EPA. The dump, which had no liner, allowing chemicals to leak into the ground unchecked, has been a persistent environmental headache. Its cleanup was first ordered by the state in 1968 to be done by Loeffel. After a dozen fruitless years, the state took over the project in 1980 after striking a deal with GE, which paid $30 million to handle all cleanup costs. Part of that money paid for the cap placed over the Loeffel dump in 1984. “It’s like putting Band -Aids on bullet wounds,” Fleming said. “They thought if they capped the landfill it would be fine but its still leaking chemicals.” The EPA assumed control and installed a treatment system for rainwater passing into the ground and through the dump. Many millions of dollars have been spent by the state and federal government on the landfill but it has been proven time and time again that more needs to be done to solve this decades-old issue. “This is environmental injustice of a blatant kind in a very small rural township,” Tonko said. “People should not be asked to live in this kind of stressful situation. The pollution of the past needs to be addressed.” sara.cline@timesunion.com - 518-454-5420 CONTINUED FROM 3

said she had taken a bottle of an unidentified medication. She was taken to Samaritan Hospital CONTINUED FROM 3 in protective custody. Parents called 911 after their 19-year-old daughter became enraged over an issue and grabbed a knife intending to cut herself. Officer Griffin Hotaling took her into protective custody. Rensselaer County Crisis Line counselors received a text message from an unknown girl who said she wanted to kill herself. Sheriff’s officials traced the phone number to a Troy address, responded there and found the cellphone’s owner, a 16-year-old, was not home but staying at an East Greenbush home. Officer Edward Ashley located the girl who thought that suicide by taking pills would solve her problems. She was taken into protective custody. A town man, 73, told a health care provider he was tired of being a burden on his family and would just like to find a way to kill himself. Officer Max Scheibly took the man into protective custody. A man called police out of concern for his son, 27, who had been up all night yelling and screaming in his bedroom. Officer Ashley found the troubled man still in his bedroom. He told the officer that he was on the phone all night with a girl who he has known for five years but has never met. He said she drives him to do self-destructive acts. He was taken into protective custody. A woman called police to report that her 19-year-old son was upset and had just run out of the house saying that he was going to kill himself. Officer Max Scheibly located the man in a nearby parking lot, where he told the officer that he wanted to impale himself with a knife. He was taken into protective custody. A town man, 25, under the outpatient care of Albany County Mental Health Services, made frightening statements to members of the health care staff and said he had no intention of returning for treatment. He was taken into protective custody by Officer Trevor LaGrave on a physician’s order for a mental health evaluation. A man called 911 after his 19-year-old daughter began saying that life was not worth living. Officer Anthony Gullo talked with her, and she described how she has been thinking of stabbing herself with scissors. She was taken into protective custody. While in protective custody, all people receive services at Samaritan Hospital’s regional mental health reception center for evaluation, counseling and family assistance on a case-by-case basis, police said.

This week’s scholar athlete is Marissa Nagel. Marissa is a captain on the Varsity Softball team. This season marks Marissa’s second year playing at the varsity level. However, she has played the sport since she was 7 years old through the Classie Lassies program. Marissa’s favorite part about softball is “being able to have fun with my teammates and be successful as a team.” Yet, one of the most difficult aspects of the sport is that “you don’t always succeed in softball and one of the hardest things is putting the last play behind you.” Last year, Marissa and her team were able to achieve great success as they reached the New York State Final Four game after winning the sectional title. This year, Marissa hopes to mirror their success from last year, and win another sectional title. In order to prepare for this season, Marissa played softball for the Capital District Fusion, as well as practice her hitting and fielding 2-3 times a week. Marissa’s hard work is not only evident in her sport, but in her academics as well. Throughout high school Marissa has maintained a GPA of 95. This year, Marissa is taking multiple challenging courses such as Advanced Placement Biology, Statistics, and Economics. Last Fall, Marissa’s hard work was recognized when she was inducted into the National Honor Society. In her future, Marissa will be attending SUNY Oneonta where she will be playing on the softball team. Marissa does not only attribute her successes to her own hard work, but to the efforts of others as well. Marissa says her biggest role model is her mother, “my mom has inspired me to work hard in school ever since preschool, and in my sport my dad always pushes me to do my best in both softball and volleyball.” Additionally, she says, “my coaches, teammates and parents help me excel in my sport. They always push me to do my best and are my biggest supporters.” We all wish Marissa the best as she concludes her senior year and enters SUNY Oneonta this August.

The New York State Sheriffs’ Institute will begin its annual Honorary Membership drive in Rensselaer County according to Sheriff Patrick Russo. The New York State Sheriffs’ Institute was established in 1979. It is a not-for-profit corporation, tax exempt organization, and contributions to the Institute are tax deductible. While the Sheriff’s Office is a unit of county government, many of the concerns of Sheriffs and other law enforcement agencies are best addressed on a statewide level. The Sheriffs’ Institute provides centralized training programs and services for all Sheriffs’ Offices, where those programs and services would be unavailable or impractical on a single county basis.

The flagship program of the Sheriffs’ Institute is the Sheriffs’ Summer Camp for economically challenged children. The Sheriffs’ Camp, in its 42nd year of operation, is located on Keuka Lake and 840 children from across New York State attend each summer. The Sheriffs’ Institute pays the entire cost of the camp stay and transportation. Most children attending wouldn’t otherwise have an opportunity for vacation travel or a summer camp experience. “In these difficult economic times we cannot forget our youth who will not have the opportunity for a summer camp experience or a summer vacation,” Sheriff Patrick Russo said. “By becoming an honorary member, you are supporting the Sheriffs’ Summer Camp for economically disadvantaged children.” In addition, the Sheriffs’ Institute operates a scholarship program that provides one scholarship to each of New York State’s Community College’s Criminal Justice Programs. This program is designed to help attract the best and the brightest to the criminal justice vocation. For more information about the Sheriffs’ Summer Camp and other Sheriffs’ Institute Programs, visit our website, www.sheriffsinstitute.org or simply google “Sheriffs’ Institute kids” and it will be your first option. Financial support for many of the Sheriffs’ Institute programs comes from Honorary Membership dues. Any persons interested in supporting the efforts of the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute by becoming an Honorary Member should contact the Sheriff if they do not receive an invitation in the mail or visit our web site at: www. sheriffsinstitute.org to download an application.

Pet Care “Mutt” and “mongrel” have long had negative connotations, but there’s no need to turn one’s nose at mixed breed dogs. Dogs of any kind, regardless of lineage, can be cherished companions who offer years of tireless love and affection. In fact, mutts have gained steam as dogs of choice thanks to new, more trendy monikers, such as “designer dogs” or “cross-bred pups.” In addition, many well-recognized purebred dogs popular today were likely once amalgams of different breeds that were carefully crafted to acquire the desirable traits of popular breeds. Here’s a look at what can make mutts stand-out pets. · Healthy pup: Mixed-breed dogs may not be prone to genetic diseases specific to one particular breed and may be less likely to develop an inherited disorder. According to Dog Reference, something called “hybrid vigor” explains how a mutt’s mixed ancestry makes it hardier and more robust. The average lifespan of a mutt is longer than that of most purebred canines. This doesn’t replace the need for quality veterinary care, however. · Life-saving choice: Animal shelters are often bursting at the seams with mutts. Choosing to adopt a mixedbreed dog can reduce overpopulation and ensure that dogs will not be euthanized. · Affordability: Mutts are typically more affordable

Reasons a mutt should be your next dog

than pure breeds because a person is not paying for lineage, show titles and AKC registration. Some mutts actually may be free if a family is giving away puppies.

· Unique qualities: No two mixed-breed dogs are the same - even among litter mates. That individuality can be an advantage.

Schodack Supervisor’s Report for March ‘19 In a continuing effort to keep residents informed of my activities as well as issues pertaining to the Town, I submit to them this report for March of 2019. As always, further information can be found on the Town’s website or its social media pages by searching for Town of Schodack on Facebook or Twitter. Over the course of my first 15 months in office, one of the things I’ve made a priority has been to work with our Police Department to ensure that our officers are adequately equipped and trained to meet the daily challenges they face in the course of their work so that our residents get the best service possible. Several months ago, Chief Belardo approached me and the Town Board and offered a proposal to create a separate detective division within the department. We already had a detective, but due to the current structure of the department, that officer remained on a regular patrol, and then would have to come in during a different shift, which would trigger overtime, to complete their detective work. Through working with the Police Union, Chief Belardo, and my fellow Town Board members, an agreement was reached that would see the Detective come out of normal shift selection and patrol to take a dedicated shift during weekdays as to best utilize his time to compete detective duties. This will help reduce the overtime that was being accrued. Through further work with Chief Belardo, patrol shifts that were generating the most overtime call-outs were identified, and we have hired an additional full-time officer who will allow for more dedicated coverage of those time. In the end, the Town receives a better uti-

lization of funds through an increased effectiveness of our officer’s time while on duty, a more professionalized department, and at very little if any additional cost as the reduction in overtime expenses will help offset the cost of an additional officer. I want to thank my fellow Board members, Chief Belardo, and the Police Union for their work in helping achieve these improvements. With the return of warmer weather, we will be holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony at our new Town Park playground. Please check the Town’s website and social media pages in the coming weeks for that announcement. ~Supervisor David Harris, Town of Schodack, NY

Tracey Rex Reports to the People of Schodack I believe staying in touch with constituents is an important part of serving in elective office. This monthly report is an example of my commitment to keeping residents informed of the activities of the Schodack Town Board. All town board meetings can be viewed live or at a later date at https://townhallstreams. com/ towns/schodack. During March, the Town Board appointed Matt Montross to the position of full-time Schodack Police Officer. We also finalized plans to hold the annual Spring Clean-Up Days on May 16, 17 and 18 between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. During these days, items that normally have a fee can be brought to the Transfer Station for free or at a reduced charge. The Town Board adopted a resolution securing the musical acts for the 2019 Music in the Park Concert Series that will be held at Schodack Town Park beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesdays from June 4 through July 2. Residents are encouraged

to attend these family-friendly concerts and enjoy free outdoor live musical entertainment as well as our new inclusive playground. The Rensselaer County Department of Health will hold a Rabies Clinic on May 2 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Schodack Highway Garage (3776 U.S. Route 20). Cats and ferrets are the first hour and dogs are the second hour. Please bring a copy of the last rabies certificate in order to get a 3-year vaccine. During March, I attended the annual Hoops Against Hunger charity basketball game held at Maple Hill High School where a large crowd turned out to enjoy a friendly game of hoops. All proceeds of the event were donated to The Anchor food pantry. As one era ends, another one begins. We say thank you to Goold Orchards Farm, a family-owned apple orchard that has been a staple in our community for generations. After 109 years in business, the Goold family is selling the farm to Scott and Todd Seeberger, lifelong residents of Schodack and experienced orchard owners. Thank you, Scott and Todd for investing in our community and carrying on the family farming tradition on this property. ~Tracey Rex, Member of Schodack Town Board

From the Nassau Town Clerk’s Office The Nassau Town Clerk’s Office will be closed Friday, April 26th, and Monday through Wednesday, May 6th through the 8th, due to training. Please plan your visit around these dates. We apologize for any inconvenience. Sincerely, Sandra L. Rings, RMC Nassau Town Clerk

North Greenbush Republicans Announce Candidates The North Greenbush Republican Committee has proudly chosen their slate of candidates for the upcoming November election. This group will work as a united team for our town and will continue to build a sound foundation for the good of all North Greenbush residents. Deputy Supervisor Joe Bott is a lifelong resident and small business owner who will continue giving something back to the people of North Greenbush by serving as Supervisor. The Bott family has deep roots in the Snyder’s Lake area, and Joe is widely known throughout North Greenbush as General Manager of Bott Brothers Electric Contractors, a firm specializing in industrial plant modernization, construction design and property management. Joe will use his business expertise to help town government continue to run efficiently and in a cost effective manner, accountable to town taxpayers. Joe is experienced in budgeting, personnel management and job creation and favors sound financial planning, expansion of the town tax base and services that the town provides in order for North Greenbush to successfully meet new demands in these challenging financial times. Accomplishments from previous terms include updating highway equipment for improved services at lower cost, assisting with relocation of police communication equipment from a leased site to a town owned site, participating in a municipal share agreement with the City of Troy, improving court room and town hall security with installation of a camera system, and pushing for town wide water delivery system improvements with grant assistance. Kelly Hoffman is the only candidate seeking re-election to the Town Board and has an unprecedented proven record of accomplishment. Kelly is a strong conservative member of the town board. Since being elected, Kelly has worked to erase a large town deficit and with fiscal prudence policies, helped build the town’s fund balance to over $5m. Through the annual budget process, Kelly and Joe approved an unprecedented 3% town property tax decrease in 2018 and 2% decrease in 2019. These reductions in taxes follow 10 years of no tax increases in the general fund. Kelly has also worked to create a “tax stabilization reserve” account of $1.16m. All of this contributed to the town’s bond rating being raised to “AA rating”. Kelly serves as Chair of the Public Safety Committee, and Co-Chaired of the Memorial Day Parade. Kelly is a member of the town’s Negotiating Committee, most recently negotiating a 5 year contract with the North Greenbush PBA. Her experience also includes previously serving as Commissioner of North Greenbush Ambulance Association, Co-Chair of the Comprehensive Plan Implementation and Codes Review Committee, Member of the Comprehensive Plan Committee and served on the town Zoning Board of Appeals. Kelly was also elected and served as Board Member to the Wynantskill Union Free School District Board of Education. Kelly is Regional Director of Real Estate and Leasing for St. Peter’s Health Partners and Vice Chair of the Rensselaer County Legislature. Kelly, and her husband, a retired police sergeant, have two children, Hannah and Raymond. Kyle McCauley Belokopitsky, her husband, Doug, and their two sons are longtime residents of North Greenbush. Kyle is a mom first, an attorney, and child advocate, currently serving as Executive Director of the NYS Parent Teacher Association and has been an adjunct professor of law and criminal justice at HVCC since 2006. She is devoted to her sons’ school and activities, a committee chair of PTA at Gardner Dickinson, 1st Vice President of Twin Town Little League, and on the Board for North Greenbush Youth Makes a Difference. Kyle is past president of the Junior League of Troy, past knight in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and a past firefighter and EMT at Defreestville Fir Department. Kyle previously represented the NYS United Teachers, the NYS Council of School Superintendents, and the NYS Catholic Conference. Kyle’s family are parishioners at St. Jude’s also. Katie Connolly has been our Town Clerk since 1992. She is a graduate of Siena College and has lived in North Greenbush all of her life. Katie has always put the residents of North Greenbush first. She serves the Veterans by running the Memorial Day Parade, she has served the children for many years by organizing the Easter Egg Hunt and Halloween Parade, and she served all residents in her work for the creation of the North Greenbush Ambulance District. Her parents Doreen and Tom Connolly ran the Local Funeral Home in Town for over 50 years. Our candidate for Receiver of Taxes Lori Ruffinen who is a long time resident of North Greenbush, along with her late husband, Ralph, owned a successful building business that was built exclusively in North Greenbush and owns 16 apartments in town. With her eye for detail and strong organizational skills, she became Director of Finance for the Town of North Greenbush in 2012 and is currently the Auditor for Rensselaer County since 2015. As Chair of the committee, I am happy to present our slate to you, knowing that each candidate will uphold their title for the better good of our great community and to be there to listen and serve the resident of North Greenbush. DEC Initiates New Enforcement Action Against Dunn Landfill New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos announced that DEC is initiating new enforcement actions against SA Dunn & Company to immediately address blowing sand from this facility, including possible penalties for any violations found during the agency’s ongoing investigation of facility operations in the city of Rensselaer.

“DEC will not tolerate these latest violations at the Dunn Landfill,” said Commissioner Seggos. “We are committed to upholding our responsibility to ensure landfill operations like Dunn are not negatively impacting surrounding communities and DEC will continue to take rigorous enforcement against this facility or any facility that violates our stringent permit requirements.” On April 3, DEC immediately responded to reports of blowing dust around the Dunn Landfill to investigate the nature and extent of the dust. DEC will take aggressive actions to hold the facility accountable for these violations and is directing Dunn operators to immediately hydroseed the sand piles at the facility to ensure dust is contained on site. DEC recently directed the Dunn Landfill to improve operations and reduce odors at the facility. These comprehensive actions included new gas collection and cover system requirements and en-

Castleton-Schodack Kiwanis makes donation to Castleton Library The Castleton-Schodack Kiwanis Club was pleased to be able to support the Castleton Public Library again this year. The Castleton Public Library offers many classes and events geared toward all ages and is a valuable asset to our community. Spring Dog Obedience Sessions Class is in session: Spring Introduction to Basic Dog Obedience Sessions will take place Wednesday Evenings at the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds April 24th-June 5th 6:00 – 6:45 PM; Open to Rensselaer County Residents (Adults): Designed for the new puppy, family pet, or for someone who wants to get more involved in the world of “dogs”. Dogs must be nonaggressive. This class will introduce basic obedience tasks including sit, down, attention, walking on a loose leash, recall and building drive. For those that have the basics down, we can continue working on same tasks, but introducing distractions and longevity. 7:00 – 7:45 PM Open to Rensselaer County Residents (8-18 years old): Designed for our children, who are able to keep control of their dogs on a leash. For those that may need some assistance with the dogs, we ask that an adult participate with them. This class will introduce or continue your work on sit, down, attention, walking on a loose leash, recall and building drive. I also will be including some tricks that everyone enjoys doing. The cost for 4-H members and volunteers is $25 and $50 for non-members. Space is limited, so please call Kayela at 518-272-4210 to reserve your spot today!

Take Back the Night 2019 In observance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, April 7-13th, 2019, the East Greenbush/Lower Rensselaer County communities are invited to participate in this year’s Take Back the Night Walk. It will be held Thursday evening, April 11th, 2019, at Onderdonk Park on Hampton Manor Lake beginning at 6:00pm. A brief ceremony will be held led by Martha Lasher-Warner, President of the Family and Friends of Liza Ellen Warner Association. She will introduce our special guests and government officials who will be joining in the walk. All in attendance will be invited to demonstrate their own support by joining in the mile-long walk around the lake. Close to 100 persons participated in the 2018 event. East Greenbush has a particularly poignant reason for this gathering. Two members of the town who grew up in these neighborhoods - Liza Ellen Warner and Nikki Hart - lost their lives as victims of domestic violence. Onderdonk Park is located across from Hampton Manor Lake at the corner of Hampton Avenue and Lakeshore Drive, East Greenbush. All are invited to follow the Family and Friends of Liza on Facebook for event updates and fundraiser activities www.facebook.com/FFLEW. inc

PET OF THE WEEK ~ Comet

1 year old, neutered male, heartworm negative, possible lab/pittie mix. He is approximately 45 lbs and is full grown. Comet is very very active and has no aggression. I wonder at times if he has an ‘off switch’. He loves to be squirted by the hose and he will lie on his belly and be squirted all day. He dries off within a few minutes. He loves to chase the ball but is learning how to return it. He can run fast..... Comet is too active for young children. He loves other dogs and loves to play.

Community “Repair Café” Gathering April 13th in N. Greenbush The all-volunteer group Rensselaer Repair Café is offering its first community repair café on Saturday, April 13, 2019, from 9am to 4pm at Woodland Hill Montessori School, 100 Montessori Place, North Greenbush, NY 12144. Help take care of our precious earth and reduce waste by repairing and reusing your household items. Instead of throwing away that broken toaster or DVD player that’s not working, bring it in to our “repair café” and our volunteer repair experts will help you fix it on the spot. In addition to the helping hand and advice, we’ll have tools and materials available that may come in handy for your repair. We welcome all broken items, but examples of things we can help you repair include: clothing, furniture, electrical appliances, toys, bicycles and electronics. Free minor bicycle repairs and adjustments will be offered by Velofix Albany. Volunteers Needed! We’re still looking for volunteers with a variety of skills who enjoy sharing their knowledge with their neighbors. We need community members who can help with this or future repair cafes. We are especially looking for people who are handy with: clothing/textile, electrical appliances, bicycles and furniture/wooden objects. To volunteer, email us at info@rensselaer-repair. cafe. DEC and Ag & Mkts. Announce Sixth Annual Invasive Species Awareness Week July 7-13 The State Departments of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Agriculture and Markets announced that New York State’s sixth annual Invasive Species Awareness Week (ISAW) will be held July 7-13. protect the state’s resources from the negative impacts of invasive species. Planning is already underway, and this year’s theme is “Early Detection: Explore, Observe, Report.” “Invasive species can cause serious damage to our farms and crops,” said State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball. “Public education, awareness and vigilance are key components to preventing the establishment and spread of invasive species in New York State. These events help inform the public and encourage people to watch for, and report, these pests.” The “Early Detection” theme is meant to shine a spotlight on the importance of detecting infestations of invasive species early, which increases the success of response efforts. Spotted lanternfly, oak wilt and hydrilla are just a few of the emerging invasives that could or are beginning to have significant impacts in New York. The theme will also help to highlight the soon to be released iMapInvasives 3.0, a revamped version of the New York invasive species database that will have a more user-friendly, mobile-responsive map display. Organizations interested in hosting an event should visit the New York Invasive Species Awareness Week website (leaves DEC website) for more information. All types of programming and events are encouraged, including removal projects, science trainings, film screenings, and more. Any interested partners should provide their local PRISM coordinator with information about their events by Monday, June 24, to ensure they can be added to the statewide list. To learn more about ISAW, visit the New York Invasive Species Awareness Week website (leaves DEC website). To learn more about iMapInvasives and to sign up for a training near you, visit the New York iMapInvasives website (leaves DEC website).

A New Sport That Will Last A Lifetime Here’s your opportunity to learn a new sport that will last a lifetime. Fly Fishing!! Home Waters Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be offering clinics and guest speakers at their monthly meetings. Our guest speakers this month will be Elizabeth Mosher and Natalie Ohl who will speak about taxonomy of streams. Sand Lake Town Board Seeking Park/ Beach Advisory Committee Members The Sand Lake Town Board is seeking 7-9 volunteers to serve on a Butler Park/Town Beach Advisory Committee. We are looking for committed, enthusiastic individuals wanting to assist the Town Board in setting priorities for improvements to these

recreation areas. While the Committee will set its own meeting schedule and select its own Chairperson, the group should plan to meet twice monthly to review Park/Beach plans, establish development and spending priorities, obtain costs associated with suggested improvements, and make recommendations to the Town Board for consideration in the 2020 Budget. We want this committee to represent as many demographics in the Town as possible. Prior town government involvement is not a prerequisite; in fact, we sincerely hope people with no prior experience will apply. It is an excellent way to become part of our town’s decision-making process and positively impact two important recreation resources for our town. You may apply through the “Contact Us” and “Email a Question or

Comment” on our Town website. Explain a bit who you are and why you are interested in serving on the committee. We will accept applications through April 19, 2019 and will form the committee shortly thereafter. If you have any questions, please reach out to Supervisor Perry at nperry@sand-lake.us or call (518) 674-2026, ext. 112. ~Nancy Perry Town Supervisor

As a kickoff to summer, we are offering an award for two junior golfers as BLCC Ambassadors of Golf. The two ambassadors will get a free membership to Burden Lake Country Club, a set of golf clubs and the chance to meet PGA Professionals at the Traveler’s Championship in Hartford, Connecticut. To participate for the Junior Ambassador of Golf, you must be between the age of 10 to 17 and a resident of Rensselaer County. We have a questionnaire to fill out on our website, www.burdenlakecountryclub.com. All questionnaires should be filled out and returned by May 20th. We will announce the winners by June 1st. We plan to make this an annual award to help promote junior golf in the area. Ron made a commitment to Junior Golf a long time ago, and we plan to keep the commitment in the future.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR I was listening to the news the other day and heard that teacher salaries in NY are the highest in the nation, the average being over $79,000/yr. The same news story stated that New York’s residents pay the highest property taxes in the nation as well. One fact not mentioned along with those others is that public school teachers’ union contracts call for no more than 900 hours/yr to base those salaries on. Keep in mind that the traditional amount of hours that the average American worker’s annual salary is based on is 2000. This makes the effective teacher salary over $180,000/year in comparison. Other recent news stories have reported that New York’s educational outcomes are far from the highest in the nation and are always outperformed by other states that spend far less. I’ve been a political observer and conservative activist advocating for education reform for going on 30 years and I’ve never heard teacher salaries reported by the Main Stream Media before…not to mention that NY residents’ property tax burden is the highest in the nation as well in the same report. Interesting. I am convinced that teachers’ salaries in NY are not purchasing the quality of education that we were promised when we approved our school districts’ budgets. I believe that what was purchased was the teachers’ silence when top-heavy programs were forced down our throats. Teachers’ classroom autonomy has been compromised. Their jobs have become what I think can more accurately be described as that of program facilitators. I believe we have a President and Secretary of Education who understand that the key to success is to restore educational freedom to teachers as well as parents and students. Education policy that leads to more classroom freedom will translate into more diversity. We need to unleash the innovation that our best teachers used to be able to incorporate into their curricula. Teachers’ morale has been very low for many years and I believe this is the major source of the problem. These are things that money can’t buy. ~David Crawmer www.republicamerica.us

Our Past Needs a Future When my husband and I decided to move back to the area after 17 years in the Midwest, we chose Averill Park out of all the other small communities within 30 The former John Gill Averill home, now the miles of Hathaway Homestead. Albany. We wanted to live in an historic home and chose to purchase and carefully renovate the John Gill Averill home in the town of Sand Lake. But it was more than just this one home; it was the wide variety of historic homes, places and as important, regard for that heritage. We chose Averill Park for its history and could feel the richness of its character. What a rewarding adventure!

But…in our short time here, we have watched in alarm as historic homes and structures have been changed beyond recognition or torn down completely. This motivated me to become involved in the Town of Sand Lake’s planning process and help to develop a historical neighborhood project. As a member of the Planning Oversite Committee, we recognize the importance of our history and the need to protect it. Our history is our charm and a part of our identity. As a member of the Sand Lake Historic Neighborhood Project our mission is to recognize, promote interest in, and encourage the preservation of historic homes, structures and heritage in the Town of Sand Lake. I’m writing this today to encourage the recognition and preservation of our history to ensure our past has a future. ~Tammy Goddard Hathaway, Averill Park, NY

“Here We Go Again- Another Fracked Gas Pipeline Proposal” National Grid has just publicly proposed to build a new fracked gas pipeline called “E37 Reliability and Resiliency Pipeline”. It would traverse Bethlehem, East and North Greenbush, NY. They have not documented this need, nor have they analyzed non-pipeline alternatives to meet our twenty-first century energy needs. They are blindly following an old path to planetary ruin by using last century’s technologies. If we continue to build fossil fuel infrastructure, there is no incentive to find alternatives. Fossil fuels are causing climate change that endangers the future of our planet, so we have to find alternatives quickly. The NY State mandated goal of 100% clean power by 2040 cannot be met if we continue to build fossil fuel infrastructure. New pipelines will last approximately 50 years and will likely become “stranded assets” before then. By paying for a new pipeline with our rate payer money, there is not enough incentive for National Grid to find alternatives. Why not use the rate hike money on our electric bill to incentivize the use of geothermal heating and cooling for new growth and also credit entities to not use gas or to use less gas on the few “peak energy” days each year? Such actions are referred to as “demand response”. Energy users should seek out ways to have a back-up

Feathers Along the Mohawk

energy source and to conserve and become more efficient with their energy consumption to eliminate the worry about “peak energy” periods. The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC), which is the lead agency herein, needs to pressure National Grid to look at demand-response, no-pipe energy alternatives (not including CNG tractor-trailers or storage). In Westchester County, NY the PSC did impose a moratorium on new pipelines and told National Grid to use renewables instead. The same should be done with this new proposal. If our country was at war, we would ask our citizens to make sacrifices for our national interests. We believe it is time to ask people to make creative choices to ensure the continuation of a sustainable environment. ~written and submitted by, Becky Meier and Bob Connors Community Advocates for a Sustainable Environment Canaan, NY 12029
