A virtual talk titled “The Saratoga-Las Vegas Connection,” hosted by University of Nevada history professor and Mob Museum board member Michael Green, will kick off the fledgling partnership at 7 p.m. on Sept. 21. Old friends Green and Landis spearheaded the event. The two historians share connections beyond an interest in the history of organized crime, including parallel dissertations on the Civil War. “It’s funny that so much of organized crime and understanding it has to do with understanding connections,” Green said about him and Landis. “And here is a connection (between us) that I think (legendary mobster) Meyer Lansky would probably look at and say, ‘Wow.’ ” The event with the Mob Museum, and the possibilities a partnership holds, are reflective of the Saratoga History Center’s new direction, Landis said. In 2019, the Saratoga History Center — then called the Saratoga County Historical Society of the Brookside Museum — was in debt and considering closing its doors. The COVID-19 pandemic shutdown in 2020 gave the organization a chance to regroup through virtual events. It rebranded as the Saratoga History Center and created new, more expansive programming that covered the entire county — including walking tours led by local historians and a new exhibit on Saratoga Springs and potato chips — instead of focusing just on Ballston Spa. “We’re almost an entirely new organization now that we do so many events, both live and online,” Landis said. “The Saratoga-Las Vegas Connection” is one of these. As its title suggests, Green’s talk will focus on the organized crime connections between the cities, including key players like Italian-American crime boss Frank Costello and Lansky, who served his only sentence at Saratoga County Jail for illegal gambling and was a recurring character in the HBO drama series “Boardwalk Empire.”
“We’re drowning in history,” Landis said. “This is just one aspect of it that I think could use a lot more attention ... not in any way to tarnish our area’s history, but to highlight it in a fun and interesting way that I think people will really get a kick out of.”
“I think there is a tendency to be fascinated with what we do not and cannot know,” Green said. “That, I think, is part of the appeal of the mob, you can make them what you want them to be, in a lot of cases.

Gambling, glamour and organized crime are synonymous with the history of Las Vegas and of another entertainment destination closer to home: Saratoga Springs. Michael Todd Landis, board member of Saratoga County History Center’s Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa, sees the two cities’ historical connections with the mob as an avenue to a potential long-term partnership between Brookside and the Mob Museum in Las Vegas. “I’ve been working since the very beginning to forge a relationship that seems pretty obvious to me,” Landis said. “Vegas and Saratoga both loom large in the world of gambling and organized crime. Perhaps Saratoga was not nearly as famous as Vegas for that kind of thing, but it does have a history of its own.”

If the event is well-received, Landis hopes the Mob Museum will pursue further partnership opportunities through resource-sharing and co-sponsored exhibits and events on both coasts, and even on a national scale, to illuminate this slice of Saratoga’s past.

LANSKY Submitted by Dave Waite August 17, 2022 Dave Waite is a resident of Blue Corners, Saratoga County and has written many articles on upstate New York history, including several in the recently published book, Saratoga County Stories. Dave can be reached at davewaitefinearts@gmail.comGalwayhasalwaysbeenacaring community, one where both long-time residents and new arrivals pitch in and help when there is a need. In the April 12th, 1882, Daily Saratogian newspaper I found two examples showing that the community spirit that is still with us today was just as alive 140 years ago. The first is the loss by fire of a barn on the Alberton farm just south of Mosherville. It must have been devastating for the family to be standing before the smoldering ruins that next morning. The thirty-seven-yearold Cornelius, his thirty-two-year-old wife Lottie, and their nine-year-old son Irwin had moved into Galway from Halfmoon only a few years before. Even with the Alberton family being new to the area, the farmtheaCorneliusmoneyhadshortcollection.upquicklycommunitysteppedandstartedaInatime, theyraisedenoughtoenabletobuysmallbarnfromneighboringofCivilWar veteran Henry M. Lewis. With equal speed, this barn was dismantled with help from his neighbors and transported to the Alberton farm. It was a barn-raising to make the community proud. On the same page of the Saratogian that reported the Alberton fire, was the story of another event in Galway that brought the community together. On April 10th of 1882, Caleb Ferris turned one hundred, and Galway celebrated with him. The 100th birthday of Caleb Ferris was news across the region that spring. Even the New York Evening Post carried this account of his life on the front page of their April 18, 1882, edition:Physically and mentally Mr. Ferris carries his years as lightly as many do three score. He has never used stimulants to any extent, is a moderate smoker, and has been an enthusiastic fox hunter and trapper. A year ago, he caught four foxes. Last winter he was not so lucky but says he caught a number of skunks and shot a fox. He claims he can shoot as well as ever. He had frequently walked several miles through the snow to visit his traps the pastBornwinter.inDutchess County, New York in 1782, Caleb Ferris was the son of Seth & Mary Ferris. Caleb’s father, Seth, was born in Fishkill, Dutchess County & his mother Mary, whose maiden name was Mosher, was also from Dutchess County. For a reason that is never explained, the Ferris family moved between Dutchess and Saratoga Counties several times, starting these moves soon after Seth & Mary were married in Providence, Saratoga County in 1780. By 1800, Caleb was again in Providence, and there he married Alvera Root in 1812. Caleb and Alvera had three children, William, Elvira, and Caleb Dean. Alvira passed away not long after giving birth to their third child in 1824. Caleb soon married Mary Church and in 1825, Orsamus, the first of their five children was born. Following him the next year was Mary Ann, then Lydia Ann, Susan, and finally Anna Maria in 1838. In 1848, at the age of sixty-six, Caleb packed up his family and moved to Fairfax, Virginia where he took up farming. During the Civil War, his house Caleb Ferris at 100

Organized crime has been a pop culture fixture, from hit television shows like “The Sopranos” to critically acclaimed films like “The Godfather.” The mob is shrouded in mystery — members didn’t keep written archives of their nefarious pursuits for, well, obvious reasons — which Green said adds to its enduring appeal.

Setbacks are mandated buffers between surveyed property lines and permanent structures. Easements are legal designations that enable individuals or entities to use portions of a person’s property for physical access or to build on it for one reason or another. Easements may be owned by utility companies for gas lines or government agencies when sidewalks are on a private property. Additional examples of easements include greenbelt conservation easements, beach easements or view easements, according to The Spruce, a home and lifestyle resource. CCRs include rules established by many planned communities, subdivisions and planned unit developments. CCRs, easements and property setbacks can affect which type of renovations are allowed on particular plots and may affect the issuance of permits. It’s essential to learn about property easements, CCRs and setbacks in advance and discuss them with contractors when drawing up preliminary plans. Your property deed or plat map as well as the local building inspection offices can highlight any regulations that may be in effect on your property and if they may affect future projects.

As Caleb had lived and worked in Galway for nearly twenty years, many friends, some even nearly his own age attended. Milestones of this magnitude often bring in family from far and wide, and Caleb’s birthday was no exception. Along with his wife Mary, there that day were grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Caleb also had four of his children with him, including daughters from Kansas and Washington. To record his achievement, Thomas J. Arnold, the Ballston photographer, took his picture, and as it has survived to today, it has been included here. Along with a huge spread of food brought by friends and family, Caleb was given presents to honor his day. One of the most admired of these gifts was a chair given to Caleb by Henry H. Hill. Both the Galway Cornet Band and the drum corps performed during the celebration. As Caleb was an old fifer, he stepped up and played along with the band. The cele-

bration concluded with speeches by eighty-six-year-old Unitarian clergyman Richard Rider of the First Christian Church of Galway and Rev. Asher Cook of Galway’s First Baptist Church. When the newspaper talked to Caleb about his life, they learned that he had been a hunter since his youth, and at times had killed as many as two wolves in one day. He also reminisced that he “was in Saratoga when the first house was being built.” Even at one hundred, the paper called him a “genuine stalwart,” and said that he still had abundant vitality. The Daily Saratogian also praised him as a “centenarian who is in fine health and full possession of his faculties and who greatly enjoyed theInoccasion.”themonths after his celebration, Caleb continued to be active. In November of his 100th year, his nephew Edward Shipman took him to Saratoga so he could buy his annual supply of fox bait. He planned to continue with his trap lines, even planning to get out in the deep snows and stormy winter weather. Caleb made it through the winter, but in the early spring he caught pneumonia after a trip to town and passed away on March 15th of 1883. Galway has come together countless times since these two events in 1882. With this community spirit as alive today as it was those many years ago, it will also continue for many generations to come.

MILTON - Town of Milton Supervisor Scott Ostrander, announced that 10 Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers have been installed in the parking lot at Milton Town Hall located at 503 Geyser Rd. and are currently available for “Weuse. recognize that the energy world is changing, and that electric vehicles are being purchased by consumers concerned about climate change and rising gas prices, but we are also anticipating the State and Federal mandates regarding the future use of EV, “ said Ostrander. “ We have made a commitment, are now poised to help our citizens meet the challenges of the future by providing access to local chargers, while also acknowledging that electrification must , by necessity, co-exist with fossil fuels.” Cost to the consumer will be 15 cents per KW, essentially covering the cost to the Town to provide. Installation of the EV chargers was made possible through a public/private agreement and grants with New York Renewable Energy, Engineering, and Recycling Group (NYREER) and National Grid Corp. , resulting in no cost to the Town or taxpayers. Future plans will include installation of 15 additional chargers at the Town Parks, Park and Ride, and Community Center.

BALLSTON SPA - Do you have the desire to support your community or to give back to the community in some way? In addition, individual Lions volunteer their time in community services like the local food banks, summer lunch programs for kids, and village beautification projects.
If you are interested in volunteering to serve the Ballston Spa community in any of these programs, or if you are interested in joining the Ballston Spa Lions Club, contact Lion Mike Yates by phone (518-885-6665) or myates01@nycap.rr.comemail: . This weekend, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre swatted questions of Biden's 2024 viability away, carefully insisting, "He intends to run. He intends to run." The very same day, another New York congressman, Jamaal Bowman, had trouble answering the question of whether Biden should runOnagain.aCNN panel (on which I was a participant) he dodged the question several times, and finally hedged by saying, "Yes, if the president is running for office -- if he's running -- I will support him."
Step say whether or not it's so, Biden should speak on his plans to run in 2024 or not
Joe:
An analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office finds that audits of taxpayers making under $400,000 annually will account for about$20 billion in revenue for the Inflation ReductionRepublicansAct. don't have clean hands when it comes to government spending, a leading cause of inflation. The national debt increased by$7.8 trillion during the Trump administration. The last president to preside over surpluses was Bill Clinton, from 1998 to 2001. Part of that had to do with welfare reform, which resulted from cooperation between Clinton and Speaker Newt Gingrich. Such bipartisanship appears to be long gone.
"The president has said he's planning on running again. People should take him at his word."That was Anita Dunn, a top adviser to President Biden, sounding very confident in her insistence that Biden will seek a second term -- and almost indignant that the question is being raised at all. But the question is being raised all over the place, by reporters and by other Democrats. Two years into the incumbent's first term, Democrats clearly haven't figured out the 2024 plan or the messaging, and that's leaving the party sounding less like Biden is the done deal Dunn is promising. The resulting fallout has been messy, to say theDemocraticleast. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, running for Congress in Manhattan, raised eyebrows during a debate with Rep. Jerry Nadler and attorney Suraj Patel when she announced, seemingly unbeknownst to the White House, "I don't believe he's running for reelection." Then, in an interview with CNN, she apologized to the president and said she wants him to run Then, again.inan on-the-record interview with the New York Times, she said, "off the record" (but it wasn't) "he's not running again," then, "on the record," went even further, stating, "he should not run again."
Last Tuesday, President Biden returned from vacation to sign the misnamed "Inflation Reduction Act." He might as well have said in his mischaracterization of the legislation that the chief business of America is now government spending and increased debt. The new law puts government ahead of business and diminishes the power of the individual in favor of the power of Washington. And it doesn't do what Biden and Democrats say it will do, particularly on inflation. The Penn Wharton Budget Model, a group of economists and data scientists at the University of Pennsylvania, concludes the law will have no impact when it comes to reducing inflation.
The federal government is taking in record amounts of revenue, but politicians can't control themselves when it comes to spending.Thereis a certain elitism about this bill, as well as there is with many things that come from Washington. Government now sees itself as the primary provider of life's necessities. For many it has become a first resource, while in the Coolidge and earlier years it was a last resort. Credit, or blame, Franklin Roosevelt for expanding the role, reach and cost of government. Though some of his programs were necessary during the Depression, the idea of "entitlement" grew. Addictions, whether to substances, or government, are hard to break. Politicians know this, which is why trying to cut even the rate of increased spending for outdated programs is treated like taking away a child's favorite toy.
I am going to repeat a suggestion I have made before and maybe this time some legislators will pay attention. If Republicans regain control of at least the House of Representatives in November, they should commission an outside firm with no connection to a party or politician to conduct a complete audit of the federal government. Every program and agency that is not living up to its original purpose and can't be done better in the private sector should be eliminated. Businesses do this, or something similar. Only government seems to grow without end. More spending, as in "The Inflation Reduction Act," won't reduce inflation, any more than drinking more alcohol leads to sobriety. But when Democrats are drunk on spending and power and too many Americans have an entitlement mentality, it doesn't appear either side is prepared to go cold turkey when it comes to spending.
Inflation Reduction Act Won't

A third New Yorker, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, refused to endorse a 2024 bid, saying simply, "We'll cross that bridge when we get to Others,it." including Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips, Sen. Joe Manchin, Rep. Angie Craig, and Colorado Democratic Party's first vice chair Howard Chou, have either refused to endorse him or have said outright that he should notTheserun. misgivings are reflected in voter sentiment as well. A July poll from CNN revealed 75% of Democratic voters want someone else to run in 2024 -- a troubling number when compared to the 47% of Republican voters who say they'd support someone other than Donald Trump. Not since Lyndon Johnson in 1968 has a president chosen not to seek re-election, and there have only been six total in the history of the United States. But these are extraordinary times and circumstances. Biden will be 82 years old next inauguration day if he wins reelection, and 86 if he completes his second term. His approval ratings dipped to a new low of 38% in late July, and have rebounded slightly in the days since winning a number of legislative victories. Meanwhile, Trump -- who's just three years younger than Biden -- has managed to keep the Republican Party and voters mostly coalesced around him, although Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been recently breaking through in some battleground states. Biden insists he's the only person who can beat Trump again. And given that he's the only person from either party to do it, it's hard to argue his logic. But "planning" on running, and "intending" to run -- all things his camp has said -- aren't the same things as announcing your reelection bid.And Democrats had better sort this out soon. Trump has effectively been running since 2020, and perhaps never stopped. As I told Bowman on CNN, there's no clear second-choice for Democrats, and if they're going to prepare voters to get behind someone else, they'd better go ahead and let them know who that should be, or let a field of contenders compete.IfBiden decides not to run, it need not be an embarrassment for Democrats. He was always meant to be a transitional president, not a transformational one. Biden can confidently own this while conditioning the environment for a successor. If, on the other hand, he runs, he'll likely be primaried by what one Dem strategist told me would be "a thousand" other candidates. The odds of the latter happening increase with every passing day that Biden's intentions to run areThat'sdoubted.abad scenario for Democrats: a divided field against an incumbent who's short on enthusiastic voters. The lingering question of whether he'll run is undoubtedly weakening his standing. Every interview with a Democratic lawmaker is an opportunity for them to awkwardly hedge or even discourage a run. The longer this is in the news cycle, the worse it looks for Biden. Rather than keep voters and Democrats guessing -- and allow a pileup of naysayers -Biden's best move is to announce decisively what he plans to do sooner than later. In or out, the clock is ticking for Biden in more ways than one.

By educating others that help is available and running/walking together, we can encourage a healthier lifestyle to show others the many “pathways” to wellness. There will be information tables about community resources, music, games, and fun for the whole family. All are welcome to join us.

In January 1925, President Calvin Coolidge, addressed the American Society of Newspaper Editors in Washington. In his remarks, Coolidge said, "the chief business of the American people is business. They are profoundly concerned with producing, buying, selling, investing, and prospering in the world."
