YouthSquared to Host PopUP for Medical Supplies

SARATOGA - Youth2Youth Helping Youth (www.youthsquared. org) is an organization, founded in 2003 with the goal of initiating positive social action in our local, national and even global communities. The Youth2 Advisory Board is composed of youth and adults who come together to brainstorm ideas to positively impact our community and vote on grants to assist with social action proposed by other Saratoga County youth up to age 22. These grants are youth-designed and youth-led and can help people all over the world. Through this, youth are able to see their direct impact, encouraging them to continue doing good.

On April 22nd, Youth2 will be hosting a Pop-UP, from 12-2 P.M. at the Mary Lou Whitney Pavilion at Gate 16 to benefit the backstretch workers of the Saratoga Race Course. A new clinic at the Saratoga Race Course will open in May to assist backstretch workers and provide them with medical care and other necessities. Our Pop-UP seeks to donate supplies to be utilized and handed out at the track, in collaboration with the Backstretch Employee Service Team of NY, Inc. Items requested and most utilized include band aids, sunscreen, bug repellant, antibiotic ointment, Qtips, hand sanitizer, chap stick, tick removers, Vaseline, hygiene items such as soap, toothbrushes, tooth paste, and deodorant, packaged snacks (granola bars, crackers, etc.) and whole first aid kits. Please ensure these items are not used.

Gate 16 is the first gate on the right after Henning Road or the last gate on the left coming from downtown, on Union Avenue.

Conservative member fails to win his party’s endorsement in Malta

Tim Dunn to run in primary in effort to keep council seat

MALTA — A town councilman and member of the Conservative Party has been passed over for an endorsement, a move that is forcing a Conservative primary in June.

Tim Dunn, a two-term incumbent and former Republican, said he filed five times the minimum required signatures to secure the Conservative line on the ballot. However, Saratoga County Conservatives have selected Republicans to fill the seat — incumbent Craig Warner and political newcomer Murray Eitzmann — in the November election.

have the overwhelming support of so many grassroots rank-andfile voters in my town,” Dunn said in a statement. “The people have spoken loud and clear, and I plan to work hard every day to live up to the honor bestowed upon me.”

When asked why Dunn was not chosen by Conservatives, Saratoga County Chair David Buchyn said, “He’s definitely not a conservative.”

“Tim is a pro-growth moderate,” Buchyn said. “During his interview, Tim touted his ability to win Democrat votes in the general election. We did not view that as a positive. He has publicly supported left-wing candidates (Assemblywoman) Carrie Woerner and (Democrat and candidate for Town Supervisor) Michael Williams. Tim was the leader of the Unite NY party, a center-left party that includes far-left policy advisers.”

Buchyn said he believes Dunn switched to the Conservative Party in December “simply because it’s much easier to gain ballot access on the Conservative line than on the Republican line,” adding Dunn only needed 11 signatures in Malta. Buchyn said Dunn would need more than 200 signatures to push a Republican primary.

Eitzmann for town board. Incumbent Supervisor Mark Hammond was also endorsed.

Dunn was backed by Republicans in 2015 and 2019, winning in both three-way races. If Dunn wins the primary, he will run solely on the Conservative line in November. Currently, there are 239 registered Conservatives in Malta out of 12,779 voters.

Dunn, who founded the marketing and communications firm Dunn Strategies Group, is undaunted, saying he will continue to work to keep Malta affordable and safe, help businesses succeed and work to strengthen the community with better code enforcement, programs for those in need as well as building parks, trails and open space.

PROVIDED BY TOWN OF MALTA Malta Councilman and member of the Conservative Party Tim Dunn will face a primary in June.

Dunn said the only reason he didn’t get the Conservative Party support is because he seeks “to serve the interests of the community, not of political party bosses.”

“I’m proud to

Ted Willette, the town GOP chair, said Dunn also sought an endorsement from the Republican committee. He said Dunn made the move just hours before the committee was to vote on its choice of candidates.

“Tim Dunn is not a Republican,” Willette said. “I don’t think him trying to get the endorsement was completely truthful. ... The committee took a no confidence vote in Tim Dunn.”

Like the Conservative Party, Willette’s committee ultimately endorsed Warner and

Bicycle lanes are coming to Spa City’s Union Avenue

Project to enhance safety near Saratoga Race Course

— The state announced Wednesday it will invest $5.7 million to build a sidewalk and bicycle lanes on Union Avenue near Saratoga Race Course.

The project, which dovetails with the city’s Complete Streets plan, will include an Americans with Disabilities-compliant sidewalk on the north side of Union Avenue between East and Polk avenues at Gate 16. The bike lanes will run on both sides of Union from East Avenue to Henning Road, near Exit 14 of the Northway. And Union Avenue, which will be updated with new drainage, will see new pavement from East Avenue to the Saratoga Lake bridge.

“Expanding bicycle and pedestrian access is an essential part of our commitment to invest in infrastructure that reconnects communities and provides new opportunities for recreation, tourism and economic growth,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement. “This Complete Streets project in Saratoga Springs will add to the charm of this historic upstate city and make it easier for residents and visitors to explore all that it has to offer without getting in their cars.”

Since 2012, the city has been working on a Complete Streets plan that is “focused on promoting and encouraging access for all modes of transportation for all users throughout the city.”

Mayor Ron Kim welcomed the state’s help.

“My administration has been promoting and building connected networks of bike and pedes-

trian paths throughout the city to reduce greenhouse emissions, cut down car traffic, and ultimately make Saratoga more accessible to all its residents and protect the environment for future generations. This project is a crucial part of that effort and a critical element in the implementation of our Complete Streets plan,” Kim said in a statement.

“Saratoga Springs and the Saratoga Race Course are jewels of the Capital Region and among the most popular attractions in New York state. With these improvements to Union Avenue, we are making it easier for area residents and visitors to leave their cars behind and experience Saratoga by walking or riding a bicycle — allowing everyone to enjoy the history and vitality of this community

“The future is bright in Malta, but it’s time to stop with petty partisan antics and focus on improving our community,” Dunn said in a statement. “I’m proud to be working with Supervisor Hammond and so many grass-roots voters to help our town realize its potential.”

While Conservatives only represent a small percentage of Saratoga County’s voters, about 3,200 out of 183,400 registered voters, an endorsement from the party can make or break a candidate. Judicial candidate Chris Obstarczyk, a Republican, learned that when he narrowly lost to Democrat Robert Muller after failing to win Conservative backing.

How to Create More Privacy on Your Property

An inviting backyard can serve as a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life. After a long day at the office or an exhausting day spent transporting kids to and fro, it’s hard to resist the allure of a peaceful outdoor space in which to unwind.

Privacy is a key component of any backyard oasis. Some homes may be so remote that privacy isn’t an issue.

But many suburban homeowners recognize they might need to tweak their landscapes if they hope to create a private oasis outside.

Fencing or planting?

Most homeowners looking to create more privacy on their property will have to choose between fencing and planting. Fencing provides immediate privacy because,

once it’s installed, no one can see into the yard. Fencing also doesn’t require watering or other immediate upkeep, which will be necessary when planting to ensure tree roots can establish themselves.

But planting has its benefits as well. Planting for privacy is essentially creating a living fence that can grow over time and provide even more privacy as trees reach maturity. Plants also tend to be less costly than fencing. The home renovation experts at BobVila.com estimate that fencing projects typically cost between $1,667 and $4,075. However, fencing projects can cost considerably more than $4,000, especially for homeowners with large properties they want to enclose. Large, mature trees can be expensive, though it’s unlikely they will cost as much as fencing. In addition, fencing requires more maintenance and will potentially need to be replaced, while native trees won’t require much upkeep and can last for generations.

Planting

Homeowners who choose to plant for privacy will next have to decide which type of plants to add to their properties. Evergreens provide year-round privacy because they don’t shed their leaves, so these are the ones most often chosen when creating a living fence. A number of varieties of evergreen trees can do the job, but it’s important that homeowners consult with a landscape architect prior to choosing trees so they can ensure the trees will thrive when faced with the growing conditions on their properties. During such a consultation, homeowners may discuss the following popular privacy trees.

• Leyland cypress: The Arbor Day Foundation® notes that the Leyland cypress is popular for hedges and boundaries, likely because a typical tree reaches a mature height of 60’-70’ and can spread as wide as 25’. The Leyland cypress grows fast, which may appeal to homeowners who don’t want to wait to establish privacy.

• Green Giant Arborvitae: There are different varieties of the arborvitae, but the Green Giant tends to be the go-to option for privacy. The ADF notes that Green Giants will grow up to three feet per year until they reach maturity, providing a fast-growing option for privacy planters. The Green Giant can spread as wide as 20 feet at maturity, which is another attribute that makes it so popular among homeowners desiring privacy.

• Eastern White Pine: The ADF notes that the eastern white pine, which can reach heights as high as 80 feet, is favored in spacious yards. That’s likely due to its height and its potential spread, which can reach 40 feet. Homeowners who choose the eastern white pine might like it for its resemblance to a Christmas tree, and in fact it is widely used for that purpose. The privacy provided by the eastern white pine is significant, but it might be best suited to especially large properties.

Whether it’s fencing or planting, homeowners have many options to consider as they seek to create more privacy on their properties.

Siding Materials to Consider for Your Home

Exterior renovations consistently top the list of projects that offer maximum return on investment, according to Remodeling magazine’s annual “Cost vs. Value Report.” Siding replacement is a popular exterior renovation and one that can completely transform the look of a home.

Siding comes in a variety of materials, and homeowners can explore the pros, cons and affordability of each to make the most informed decision when replacing their existing siding. Factors to consider apart from price include durability, maintenance and aesthetics.

Vinyl

Vinyl siding is one the most popular siding materials in North America. That popularity is perhaps due to the relatively low cost of vinyl siding replacement, which Forbes Home estimates is between $6,150 and $15,900 to install for a 2,000-square-foot home. A wide array of color options as well as weatherproof protection makes vinyl siding worthy of consideration.

PVC, which is what vinyl siding is comprised of, also is quite fire-resistant. Potential pitfalls of vinyl are that it can fade more quickly than other siding materials and is sensitive to excess UV exposure.

Engineered

Engineered materials cost more than vinyl but are considered very durable. They can be advantageous in damp climates or ones where insects are problematic. LP SmartSide™ is a type of engineered hardwood that is very durable, so much so that a 50-year warranty often is offered for the product, according to First American Roofing & Siding. This material can be painted if homeowners desire a change of color down the line. This siding costs around $2.50 to $4.50 per square foot for siding and all trim accessories with an additional installation cost of $5.50 to $12.00 per square foot. The product is made of wooden strands that have been coated with wax for moisture resistance. A special zinc-based solution is added to protect against rot and insect infestation.

A similar product, HardiePlank™, is engineered from a blend of cement, wood fibers, fine sand, and water. It is similar in price point to the SmartSide and offers resistance to rot and insects. HardiePlank also can be repainted.

Engineered products can be more expensive to install and generally are not DIY renovations, which may deter homeowners working on tight budgets.

Wood siding

Wood is one of the oldest siding materials. It can be stained or painted and comes in a variety of styles, from boards to shingles. It’s a popular choice in historical homes or ones with classic, architectural details.

It’s important to note that wood is a combustible material that can be susceptible to water and insect damage. It also needs to be maintained continuously to look its best. This makes wood siding a true commitment on the part of homeowners. The cost is midrange between vinyl and engineered sidings.

Metal

Those interested in one of the most energy efficient options in siding can look no further than metal siding.

Metal isn’t just for roofing. According to Colonial Contracting, Inc., metal siding creates a uniquely modern appearance and comes in a variety of styles that complement homes.

Unlike fiber, wood or vinyl products, metal siding reflects the sun’s rays and keeps interior temperatures cooler in the summer, a boon in hot climates but maybe not the most insulating option for cold climates. One po-

tential pitfall is the possibility of rust, which would make metal siding a less ideal choice for those who live near the ocean. The cost of metal siding is comparable to other siding products, at around $10 per square foot.

These are a few of the siding options homeowners can investigate if they’re revamping the exteriors of their homes.

Saratoga County History Center

Presents Akum Norder on Researching a Community

BALLSTON SPA - The Saratoga County History Center and Heritage Hunters of Saratoga County are thrilled to announce a talk by Akum Norder, senior editor for opinion at the Albany Times Union, on April 15 at 1 pm

The event will take place in-person at Brookside Museum, 21 Fairground Avenue, Ballston Spa, NY 12020.

Norder’s book, The History of Here: a House, the Pine Hills Neighborhood, and the City of Albany, tells the story of her 1912 house and the people who have lived in it over the years. As an experienced writer and editorial board member, Norder is well-versed in the history and development of the city of Albany, and her book provides valuable insight into how every house changes over time, as well as the impact of the people and neighborhoods surrounding it.

Norder’s work has been recognized by the Journalists’ Association of New York, which awarded her second place in opinion writing in October. Her talk promises to be an engaging and informative event, exploring the history and heritage of the Albany area.

The event is open to the public, and all those interested in local history and heritage are invited to attend. For more information and program updates, interested individuals are encouraged to visit www.brooksidemuseum.org or follow the Center on Facebook or Twitter @ SaratogaCoHistory.

The Saratoga Race Course is across the street. There is a crosswalk at Gate 16. The pavilion will be right in front. Signs will be put out on Union Avenue to help show the way. The drop-off will be Covid-19 safe and outdoors, and Youth2 members will be there to assist with drop-off and receive the items.

In 2021, Youth2 hosted a Pop-UP for sanitary hygiene products. One of the organizations we donated to was the BEST Clinic, at the Belmont Race Track, which benefited the backstretch workers. The hardworking backstretch workers are a key part of the smoothly functioning racetrack, and giving back to them for all they do is a nice gesture. Youth2 would like to thank the Saratoga Race Track, NYRA Security, Nancy Underwood and Sheriza Serravanto for their assistance and for allowing us to hold the Pop-UP onsite! Lastly, thank you to the Stewart’s Holiday Match Grant, for their continuing help to fund our Pop-UPs with their generous donation to Youth2.
