Capital Region safe, fed and physically and mentally healthy during the pandemic. CSSC was proud to present the 2021 Colonie Senior Spirit awards to many honorable individuals. These included, Osamah “Sam” Awad from Caring Wellness Pharmacy, for providing over 1,000 community seniors with COVID-19 vaccinations at CSSC clinics. Assemblyman John T. McDonald III, for his continued dedication and support of seniors in the Capital Region and

Colonie Senior Service Centers. To the CSSC volunteers Yvonne Livingston, Jerry Thompson, Brenda Lovelace -Durant and Sue Moyle for their unending commitment to helping CSSC provide food and meals to seniors in the Capital Region throughout the pandemic. Lastly, Trish Maloney, for being there for seniors in their time on need in dealing with the pressures and struggles of living through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bethlehem road diet balloons into big deal ByLINE: CHRIS CHURCHILL

BETHLEHEM - The stretch of Delaware Avenue from the Albany line toward Delmar could be better. On that, almost everyone agrees.

For one thing, the road is a lousy place to walk, with fast-moving traffic just a few feet from any brave soul who dares a jaunt along the sidewalks. Delaware, with a relatively high crash rate, is also difficult for drivers.

Those factors and a few others -- like the presence of an elementary school

along the road -- have brought a push to change the 1.3-mile stretch. The town of Bethlehem, in fact, wants to put Delaware on a diet, slimming it from four travel lanes to two, with a turn lane down the middle and bike paths on either side.

To many in town, the Complete Street Project looks like progress, change that would make the road safer and more attractive. With a few trees and other touches, it might even make the section of Bethlehem feel more like a traditional town and less like a place to hurry Please see CHURCHILL 10

Hoffman Car Wash Bolsters Food Pantry Supplies Ahead of Holiday Season - Free Car Wash with Food Donation on October 23-24 CAPITAL DISTRICT - For the second time in 2021 and the 10th consecutive Fall, the staff at Hoffman Car Wash will be collecting non-perishable food items to support local area food pantries. On Saturday, October 23rd, and Sunday, October 24th, Hoffman Car Wash will provide a free Ultimate car wash with a food donation.

“Both our staff and customers look forward to the Food Drive every year,” said Hoffman Car Wash CEO Tom Hoffman Jr. “Each year we collect thousands of pounds of items, and our hope is this fall’s food collection will be more successful than ever before.”

Hoffman Car Wash has partnered with 14 different food pantries to provide much-needed assistance for families and individuals in need. Each Hoffman location will donate the

collected items to a food pantry in its neighborhood.

This year’s pantries include: The Anchor Food Pantry (East Greenbush), Bethlehem Food Pantry (Delmar), Captain Community Human Services (Clifton Park), Columbia Opportunities (Hudson), The Food Pantries of the Capital District (Colonie), Franklin Community Center (Balston Spa), Fulton Community Action Agency (Amsterdam), Hope 7 Food Pantry (Troy), Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless (Albany), Loaves and Fish Food Pantry (Binghamton), Northeast Regional Food Bank (Latham), People’s Place (Kingston), South Glens Falls Moreau Community Center (Queensbury), The Wilton Food Pantry (Saratoga).

Suggestions of non-perishable food items to donate include canned meat or fish, canned entrees (stew, ravioli, etc.), canned fruit in juice, canned spaghetti sauce, canned soup, hot or cold cereal, canned 100% juice, and peanut butter and jelly.

Deck the halls with DIY decor Decorating is one of the joys of the holiday season.

Families often decorate together, and such traditions may include dressing the Christmas tree and hanging holiday lights around the house.

A day spent making homemade ornaments is another great way to decorate and spend quality time together as a family during the holiday season. Though families can let their imaginations run wild when making ornaments at home, the following are some great starting points that can serve as springboards for holiday crafting sessions.

• Snowmen: The holiday season simply wouldn’t be the same without snowmen. Homemade snowmen can be made out of ping pong balls, which are the ideal size when making ornaments for the Christmas tree. Those who want to go a little bigger can glue wiffle balls or large polystyrene balls together or create their own papier mâché snowmen to display on mantles or on console tables in a foyer or hallway.

• Santa Claus: Another staple of holiday decor, Santa Claus has inspired many a DIY holiday ornament over the years. A paper plate Santa Claus with a cotton ball beard glued on can make for a fun Christmas craft, especially for young children who can’t wait for the big guy to

• Cookie cutters: Family baking sessions are a holiday tradition for millions of people. Though that often leads to batches upon batches of tasty cookies, it also means families tend to have a surplus of holiday cookie cutters around the house. Surplus cookie cutters tend to be discarded or relegated to the miscellaneous items drawer in kitchens, but a more awe-inspiring fate can await them.

A coat of paint, some glitter and a little bit of string or twine is all families need to transform their extra cookie cutters into colorful tree ornaments.

Risky Relationships: The Link Between Domestic Violence & Problem Gambling CAPITAL DISTRICT - October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

While problem gambling may not be something you associate with domestic violence, the link between the two makes it important to bring awareness to this volatile relationship.

Domestic violence is defined as violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner, which may include physical violence; sexual, psychological, social, or financial abuse; harassment; and stalking. A recent study of help-seeking gamblers found that forty-nine percent of participants reported being a victim of violence and 43% had perpetrated violence (Bellringer et al., 2017). A person with a gambling problem may experience intense mental and emotional distress which may be expressed through restlessness, irritability, or violence. Someone’s gambling problem may also elicit similar distress from a loved one. The person gambling may be the perpetrator or victim of domestic violence. Furthermore, there is already evidence that domestic violence increases during professional sporting events due to the emotions experienced from a “home team’s” upset loss, citing issues like consumption of alcohol, increased interactions with family members during games, increased expectations for a positive outcome, and increased stress and anxiety. Peanut Butter Can Pack a Nutritional Punch

A nutritious, well-balanced diet is a vital component of a healthy lifestyle.

Not everybody agrees the diet would be an improvement, though, not by a long shot. Proposed five years ago, the road diet has been hotly controversial, highlighted by a petition campaign that forced the project, approved by the Town Board in April, onto the November ballot. The vote on “Proposal 6” seems likely to be close.

“It has become this really politicized issue, like so many other things,” town resident Erin Svare told me.

From an outsider’s perspective, the heat and vitriol is odd and surprising, given the project’s relatively limited scope.

I mean, the town isn’t trying to build a subway or an airport. We’re talking about a simple infrastructure project on a short piece of road. What gives?

The project between Elsmere Avenue and the bridge over the Normans Kill would mostly just change how lanes are drawn on an existing road that would be repaved, given a lower speed limit and improved with much-needed crosswalks.

The debate isn’t even about money, really, given that state and federal grants would largely cover the $5.2 million cost.

Somehow, though, the road seems to have become a proxy for broader cultural and political fights, both within Bethlehem and without. To the point, consider

It’s alright to indulge once in

headed for a bad place on a highway full of potholes. How will any bad road ever be fixed?

Which isn’t to say that every every argument against the plan is abstract.

When I spoke to business owners in the Bethlehem Coalition for Common Sense, which is urging residents to vote no, they expressed fear that congestion will lead drivers to choose other routes, away from their businesses.

“Why would you risk destroying livelihoods?” asked Delmar Beverage Center owner Jim Morrill, who wants the town to instead adopt a plan that will include two lanes of traffic heading away from Albany, with one travel lane in the opposite direction and a turn lane.

I understand why change equals uncertainty, if not an outright threat, for business owners. That’s especially true now, when the pandemic and all its effects have many feeling like they’ve built their incomes on sand.

But the threat posed by the road diet seems slim. Delaware Avenue already narrows to two lanes on either side of

the four-lane stretch in question, and that doesn’t seem to cause unreasonable congestion. Traffic engineering studies have found that the diet would add less than two minutes to the average trip. (OK, perhaps a few more minutes at rush hour.)

Plus, roads that are calmer, safer and humane for pedestrians are generally good for businesses, as the thriving, twolane stretch of Delaware heading toward Delmar’s Four Corners shows. Turn lanes help, too. Who happily stops for a store if doing so brings the threat of being rear-ended?

Some things are bigger than economics.

There are basic quality-of-life issues in play here.

The residents of neighborhoods along Delaware need to be able to cross without risking their lives, and kids who go to Elsmere Elementary deserve better than a dangerous zoom-way. They should be able to walk and bike to school safely, as generations of children did before speed became society’s prime objective.

It isn’t about politics, lunatic left or radical right. It’s about fixing a problem.
