Hadley Business Association Tree Decorating Contest HADLEY - The Hadley Business Association believes in giving back to the community. Through the Christmas Season they have held decorating contests with cash awards to the lighted homes in Hadley and Lake Luzerne.

This year the HBA is focusing on local community clubs, organizations, civic groups, and non profits to decorate. They are inviting local clubs to decorate a tree in a Hometown Christmas Theme that depicts a clubs’ mission.

Spots along Circular Street at the Rockwell Street Park have been designated for community trees. The 6 foot tree are furnished by the Hadley Business Association, with the first 10 entries receiving a FREE TREE to decorate! SARATOGA SPRINGS On Aug. 23, Dennis King left his cardiologist’s office with one thing on his mind -- a $4 deal on two sausage Egg McMuffins at McDonald’s.

And that’s all that he remembers. That’s where McDonald’s staff picks up the story.

“All I heard was someone was down in the drive-thru,” said Karen Robison, the

shift manager at the city’s South Broadway McDonald’s. “I thought someone was hit by a car.”

The fast food restaurant’s Manager Paige Eaton and Robison sprinted outside to the pay window and found King slumped in his seat suffering sudden cardiac arrest. With his car still in drive, but his foot on the brake, Eaton threw the car in park.

Robison felt for a pulse on his wrist and neck. There was none.

Glens Falls Community Theatre General Production Meeting GLENS FALLS - Glens Falls Community Theatre will hold a general production meeting and auditions for “SPY!: The Manhattan Murder Mystery,” an interactive murder mystery play by Alan S. GFCT is mounting this production in celebration of the group’s 20th anniversary of staging murder mystery dinner theater shows. The original GFCT production of “SPY!” was presented in March 1999 and was directed by the late Dick Stein and produced by Lynn Gorham.

There are three male roles and three female roles available. Actors need not be age-appropriate. In addition, there may be several smaller roles cast from the available audience participation characters, depending on turnout at auditions.

“SPY!” is set in May 1945 – just days after the Allied victory in Europe in World War II. A party hosted by Frank and Betty Spencer to celebrate the occasion will also serve as an opportunity for Frank – who just happens to be the chairman of American Aircraft – to announce that his company has been chosen to build several B-29 bombers. But other guests – including a professor in charge of a secret research project, a Soviet military official, and a gorgeous French songbird hired by

We will make this a loop and head back towards the Lake Ann trail from the Easter Ridge and take that back to Bonita, back to the parking lot. SARATOGA SPRINGS - The Saratoga Springs Figure Skating Club will offer free ice skating immediately followed by 20th Annual Winter Ice Skating Exhibition. On December 30th at 3:15pm the ice at Saratoga Springs Weibel Rink, 30 Weibel Avenue, Saratoga 12866, will be available for free skate.

While Eaton was screaming to the workers inside to call 911, Robison struggled to put down his seat.

“I pushed every button and nothing was happening,” Robison said.

She started administering CPR on him as he was sitting upright. Inside, with 911 on the line, the dispatcher kept asking if he was breathing.

“I got sick of answering ‘no, he’s not breathing,’” Eaton said. “We were so scared.”

And Robison was getting tired.

“Paige told me to keep on going,” Robison said. “We couldn’t switch. That would have taken too long.”

That’s when city police officer Lloyd Davis Jr., who was nearby on West Circular Street, arrived. With his help, they pulled King out of the passenger side, positioning him on the concrete with his head propped up by a car cover. From there, Davis took over.

“He did gasp for a breath,” Davis said.

“That was a good sign, but he was still critical. We didn’t know which way it would go.”

When the fire department arrived minutes later, they got him breathing with a CPR machine. Yet King was still unconscious.

“I died,” King said who returned on Thursday to McDonald’s with rose-accented bouquets for both women. “The paperwork from the doctor says I died in the field. If it wasn’t for them, even if I was resuscitated, I’d be stupid. They saved me.”

CPR, the American Heart Association’s website notes, keeps the blood flow active so that a patient suffering cardiac arrest can be resuscitated successfully by trained medical staff. When he regained consciousness, he felt like he was beaten up.

“I was sore for weeks,” he said.

The 74-year-old has had heart issues, including AFib and tachycardia, for 40 years. After spending a week at Saratoga Hospital, he was sent to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City where he underwent open-heart surgery. He remained there until Oct. 7.

“The doctor says I’m good until 80,” said King who is a former Realtor and carpenter who is back home in Saratoga Springs. “I feel like this is giving me a second chance in life. I wonder why me?”

King said recovery has been slow and at times painful, but dying was easy. He said it was like falling asleep. He didn’t see a light, deceased loved ones or his life flash before him. “It was black,” he said.

King tells it in a matter-of-fact way, in contrast to both women, who recall the incident in an animated fashion as if it

were happening all over again. They say they are relieved and elated to know that he survived.

“Last time I saw him he was being put in an ambulance,” Eaton said.

After the ambulance headed for the hospital and the crews managed to clear out the backup of cars in the drive-thru, the two women burst into tears. Then they tried to find out what happened to King.

“I called the hospital, but they wouldn’t tell us anything,” Eaton said. “I’m so happy to see you. You look so much better.

You look good.”

The kindness warms King who has suffered from a broken heart most of his life. His father’s career in the Air Force as a Russian interpreter stationed him in locales where a family could not follow.

He believes his father chose to keep his family at bay because his mother suffered from an undiagnosed mental illness. She was combative; and when she and his father were together, they wouldn’t speak to each other for months on end.

As an adult, he got married to avoid the Vietnam War draft. When his marriage failed, he married a second time. That didn’t last either.

“I just walked away,” King said. “I don’t know why. I was a disaster from a romantic standpoint.”

King, who never had children, admits he’s disappointed with his life and believes he now has a chance to make things right.

“I became a hermit,” he said. “I was comfortable with that. With the time I have left, maybe I’ll get some therapy and discern what happened in my life. I wonder if there are things I can improve.

I’m not sure how to approach it. How do you change the way you have been? It’s hard, but it’s great to have the opportunity to rethink and maybe straighten out my relationships.”

He does cherish his relationship with Robison and Eaton, whom he calls his angels.

“I’m thankful for them,” he said.

He will see them because he hasn’t changed his taste for McDonald’s. But he is trying to improve his diet. Instead of a sausage Egg McMuffin, his last breakfast sandwich was an egg-only McMuffin with no sausage or cheese.

“I’ve been told they do serve salads,” King said, glancing over at the women with a smile.

He also discovered he’s still owed his two sausage Egg McMuffins that were paid for in the second before he collapsed.

Eaton promised she’ll make sure he gets his McMuffins. Robison said he can have whatever he wants and she would pay for it.

decline in enrollment, brought about the decision to look at a merger.

The tiny district in Washington County currently has around 500 students housed in one building that serves prekindergarten through grade 12.

“There could come a time when we can’t pass our budget because we don’t have enough people in the community who are connected to the school district,” Ward said.

Kristine Orr, the superintendent of schools in South Glens Falls, said the study will look at all aspects of the two districts -- separated by the upper waters of the Hudson River -- to determine the feasibility of a merger.

An annexation, as it is called by the state Department of Education, would likely reduce the tax rate and head off deficits in Fort Edward. In exchange, the South Glens Falls district, with an enrollment reported at 3,113 in 2017-18 and located in Saratoga County, could potentially be in for $47 million in additional state funding spread over 14 years.

“I think the Fort Edward School District wants to look at all the possibilities for the district,” Orr said on Wednesday. “There is a lot of hometown pride at Fort Edward, but the board wants to be fiscally responsible to their taxpayers and we want to be as supportive as possible.”

This pre-merger study, which will be done by Castallo and Silky LLC of Syracuse, will look at a variety of factors, said William Silky, who will complete the study by the spring. He said he will examine enrollment projections, all facilities including buildings, programs, transportation, finances, staffing and contracts for a school merger.

“In addition, I’ll be looking at if the communities are compatible,” said Silky, who has done 29 merger studies in 32 years, but has only seen five successful mergers, including the state’s most recent: Elizabethtown-Lewis with Westport in the Adirondacks. “A major variable is taxes. A school with a much lower level of taxes doesn’t want to merge with a school with higher taxes. No one wants their taxes to go up.”

That could be a factor in a cross-county merger.

According to the South Glens Falls’ website, district residents in the town of Moreau (which the district mostly encompasses) now pay $15.51 per assessed $1,000. Fort Edward residents pay $27.30 per assessed $1,000, according to district business manager Michelle Taylor.

Ward said that represents about a $7 increase per assessed $1,000 in the past three years.

South Glens Falls is not the only district with which Fort Edward is exploring a merger. Earlier in the year, the district initiated a pre-merger study with Hudson Falls Central School District, its northern neighbor, also in Washington County. That study, done by Capital Area School Development Association, found that Fort Edward will continue to see a drop in enrollment -- from 486 as reported to the state Education Department in 2017-18 down to CASDA’s estimated 448 by the 2022-23 school year.

The CASDA study also found that in order for Fort Edward to keep pace financially, it would need to raise school property taxes even more. But a merger with Hudson Falls, the CASDA study noted, could reduce village taxes by $5 per assessed $1,000 a year. It also estimated that Hudson Falls, with a reported enrollment of 2,202, would be granted $44 million over 14 years in a merger plan.

Linda Goewey, superintendent of schools at Hudson Falls, said she is still interested in discussing a merger with Fort Edward “when/if Fort Edward deems it necessary.”

She also noted that Fort Edward and Hudson Falls are compatible because they are both in Washington County.

No matter which school is a better fit, Silky said, the process is complicated. Once a pre-merger study is done, then a second, more involved merger study must be completed. Then each school’s board of education must approve the plan to move forward. After that, each district would need to hold two referendums, starting with a straw poll. If that passes, each district hosts a second, legally binding referendum, Silky said.

“It’s also a lot of hoops to jump through,” said Michael Borges, executive director of the New York State Association of School Business Officials. “The state should consider streamlining it to make it easier to merge. One majority vote should be enough. “ A 2014 study from the state school business officials found that mergers are beneficial to schools with fewer than 1,500 students.

“It’s an economy of scale,” Borges said.

The study, which was done by Castallo and Silky, also found that many schools resist merging for fear of losing local identity, perception that the communities are incompatible, higher costs or higher taxes, job security for employees and a natural tendency to resist change.

“People identify with their school,” Borges said. “Especially in rural areas, the school is the focus of the community and the community feels a loss of identity.”

Ward said he is not sure which way things will go for Fort Edward. At this point, he hasn’t gotten a lot of feedback from the community and expects they are still digesting the news.

Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task.

The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and nonswitch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded
