City revels as Indians return as champs ByLINE: JAMES ALLEN HIGH SCHOOLS

GLENS FALLS - The euphoria from winning the Class B state football championship had not subsided for Glens Falls as it arrived in town Saturday night after a return trip from the Syracuse Carrier Dome.

The Indians had hours earlier produced a 55-32 victory over top-ranked Batavia.

“The crowd was great at school,” Glens Falls coach Pat Lilac said. “We did a loop around in front of the Civic Center (now known as Cool Insuring Arena) and there were people along the street and people getting out of their cars. It was pretty cool.

“When we came back to the high school, there were a couple hundred people there waiting. They cheered for each kid as they came off the bus. It was great.”

Lots of pizza at school accompanied the Indians’ second state title since 2016.

“It is a satisfying feeling, for sure,” Lilac said,

The latest championship by Glens Falls provided Section II its 15th title in 46 state-final appearances since the full playoff system was adopted in 1993.

The championship marked the third straight year an area team won a state title.

After capturing five titles from 1993-1999, Section II had only one team -- Amsterdam’s 2005 Class A squad -- win a championship from 2000-11.

Since then, Section II has claimed nine state titles in 17 final appearances.

Another reason to mention the 2005 Amsterdam squad is the 2018 Glens Falls contingent reminds of the Rugged Rams from 13 years ago.

Sure, Amsterdam’s offense was different than the Indians’ spread attack, but the similarities are each team was blue-collar tough, overcame injuries, possessed a dynamic quarterback and lost two games before claiming its state title.

Safety precautions key on hunting trips ByLINE: ROB STREETER OUTDOORS

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Folks who don’t hunt may have misconceptions of the sport, especially for how safe it really is. Hunting is actually safer than most sports. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, compared to hunting, you have a much better chance of getting hurt doing things like playing volleyball, snowboarding, or even cheerleading or bike riding. Simply put, the number of accidents compared to the number of participants is very low. Tackle football, for example, is 105 times more likely to produce injuries.

The Neil Hook Vocal Music Scholarship CAPITAL DISTRICT The Festival Celebration Choir will hold a competition for current graduating High School Seniors in the Greater Capital District. CORINTH - Major General Ray Shields, the Adjutant General, announces the recent reenlistment of members of the State National Guard in recognition of their continuing commitment to serve community, state and nation as part of the Army National Guard.

Sergeant Ryan Porter from Corinth, N.Y. has reenlisted to continue service with the Company D, 3-142nd Aviation.

“It’s great to see Soldiers staying in the Army and continuing to serve their State and Nation in the New York Army National Guard,” Shields said. “The most important Army asset we have is the individual Soldier. The dedication, skills, and leadership traits they bring to our community and their employers are invaluable.”

GLENS FALLS- Week of November 19th, 2018. Congratulations to Mr. Jim Farrell, Crossing Guard at the Jackson Heights Elementary School in Glens Falls. Mr. Farrell, who is known as Mr. Jim, may not be an actual teacher…but he teaches both the students and the staff about kindness every day. He influences the school climate

in such a positive way. Mr. Jim can be seen daily with a smile, a wave and words of encouragement to both students and faculty. On Halloween he decorated the school entrance with balloons and on Mother’s Day he gave the staff and the moms of the students, flowers and acknowledged the work they do for the kids. North Country Festival of Trees & Festival Gala

GLENS FALLS - Join friends and neighbors and enjoy a winter wonderland of beautiful trees and decorations at the 27th Annual North Country Festival of Trees, at The Queensbury Hotel, 88 Ridge Street, Glens Falls, from November 29 to December 2. “Make It and Take It” at the Adk. Folk School LAKE LUZERNE - The Folk School will participate in the Town of Lake Luzerne’s craft walk and tree lighting by presenting our first ever “Make It and Take It” family event.

Hometown Holidays Returns to Downtown Glens Falls GLENS FALLS - Downtown Glens Falls will be in the holiday spirit from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 30, 2018, as the community officially ushers in the holiday season with “Hometown Holidays”.

While deer hunting accidents accounted for six of the 19 accidents last season, small-game hunting for the various categories like turkey hunting, upland bird hunting and waterfowl hunting made up the rest.

One takeaway from last year was that in almost 80 percent of the accidents, the victim was not wearing hunter orange, which is an easy precaution to take.

My father and I taught three simple rules as volunteer instructors: treat every firearm as if it were loaded, be sure of your target and beyond, and always point the muzzle of the firearm in a safe direction.

These are simple ideas, but they will prevent accidents every time they are used.

No deer is worth someone getting hurt over, and slowing down and being safe is always the way to go. Yet a lot of people try to drag a deer by themselves when they are out of shape and end up in the hospital or worse. Always get help if you can.

Treestands are another potential for serious injury. Fortunately the safety equipment available and instructional videos that come with every stand are excellent and there is no excuse for not using them. Last season 12 treestand accidents were investigated, revealing that 75 percent of the hunters were not using full body safety harnesses. Fifty percent of these accidents were fatal. If you have a family that depends on you, being in a treestand without safety gear is a recipe for disaster.

So while hunting is a very safe sport, we should never give up the goal of having zero accidents.

Christmas is a time of traditions. We all have them.

Bringing in and decorating an evergreen tree is one of them. Hanging stockings is another. The list goes on and on. Indulging in these traditions gives us comfort. Sometimes we participate in traditions that are so ancient that we no longer remember the origin.

For instance, in recent years many people have a tradition of hanging a ‘kissing ball’ in their home. Thirty years ago, kissing balls weren’t really seen much if at all. If they were seen, they were homemade. You can now get kissing balls made from the same material as an artificial Christmas tree. These also come with battery operated minilights on them. By now kissing balls are a well-entrenched holiday decoration.

So, how did kissing balls get their start?

The biggest clue is in the name. To find their origin we need to look for the original kissing ball....mistletoe. The kissing part makes sense since we all know that, for some reason, we are entitled to kiss someone standing beneath a sprig of mistletoe...but what about the ball part?

Mistletoe is a parasitic plant. Rather than growing roots into the soil to get nutrients, mistletoe forces its roots into the bark of a host tree and sucks the nutrients it needs from it like a vampire. There are several trees that can fall victim to mistletoe including oak trees. A mature clump of Modern kissing balls. mistletoe takes on a familiar shape, a sphere or ball.

Mistletoe is interesting for other reasons. It was never adopted by Christianity into Christmas celebrations. Not only did the church never sanction the use of mistletoe in holiday celebrations, its use was actually banned at one time. This is, no doubt, due to the fact that it was highly revered by the ‘pagan’ Druid priests. It is central to their ancient solstice celebrations along with its host, the oak tree. During the Druid’s solstice celebration, a Druid priest would cut the parasitic mistletoe from the branch of an oak tree and distribute pieces of it to the gathered populace. While doing this, he was careful not to let it touch the earth. Part of the mystery of mistletoe to the Druids was that it grew, not from soil, but from the bark of the oak A sprig of Mistletoe. tree. To receive a sprig of mistletoe from the priest was a blessing Druids looked forward to as part of their solstice rituals.

Today, all we know about mistletoe is that we are entitled to kiss anyone who stands beneath it. That tradition has its roots in Scandinavian myth. Loki, a troublesome little god, shot Balder, another young god, with an arrow made of mistletoe, the only thing that could harm this favorite son of Freyja. The tears of sorrow Freyja shed became the white berries of the mistletoe. All the Norse gods worked together to restore Balder to life and, in gratitude, Freyja is said to bestow a kiss on anyone who passes beneath mistletoe. Now we are all entitled to kiss anyone we find standing below the mistletoe. You have to love mistletoe for that!

Hanging an entire ball of mistletoe was fairly common in Victorian England; it would be rare these days. This is partially due to a small supply but mostly out of safety concerns. Mistletoe is poisonous and can cause harm or even death if eaten.

These days the only real mistletoe you can find is a heavily painted sprig with the warning on the package not to eat it.

“It is a storybook ending, getting to play my last football game in the place I will be playing the next four years,” Girard said.

“There would be no better way to go out than as a state champion.”

The Indians achieved that goal. Prior to the game, Girard told me the offense had to do its job, but that Saturday’s title game would ultimately come down to what the defense did against Batavia.

He was right.

The Indians fell behind 14-0 and watched the Blue Devils recover an onside kick after the second score. Girard switched momentum to the Indians with two critical plays: first with an interception and second on a third-and-10 completion to David Barclay from the Glens Falls 7 to the Batavia 33.

Girard capped that drive with a most unconventional four-yard touchdown run, a dash that began going right before the senior reversed his field beyond the 30-yard line before completing the serpentine journey on the left sideline for the touchdown.

In describing what was in his head at that moment, Lilac said, “No, no, no, no, yes.”

Girard loves to improvise when things become disjointed. He thrives on the backyard nature of making something out of nothing.

“You can do a lot more improv in football than you can in basketball,” Girard

said.

“I was just talking to my Dad. He said he never saw anyone like that. Do you remember anyone like that?” Lilac said.

My answer was no. Girard is a uniquely gifted quarterback.

“And it is not just his athleticism,” Lilac said. “It is his instincts, making plays out of what looks like nothing.”

The offense, featuring Girard (314 yards passing and two touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns), sophomore running back Aalijah Sampson (135 yards, four touchdowns), Barclay (two receptions for 93 yards and one touchdown) and senior receiver Trent Girard (seven receptions for 183 yards and one touchdown) took turns torturing the Blue Devils.

In turn, the defense -- led by senior linebacker Kyle Vachon, senior nose guard Thompson Collins, junior defensive tackle Nick Danahy and senior linebacker/end Terrelle Bonner-Welch -- did enough good to offset the 410 yards rushing and three touchdowns from Batavia’s Ray Leach.

“We got them off schedule a couple of times at second-and-9 or third-and-8.

We had to get enough stops,” Lilac said.

“Watching them play Skaneateles, we felt if we get a couple of stops and then score, we would be good. That is what ended up happening.”

The sting of seeing a 24-game winning streak snapped in the 2017 state semifinals fueled the 2018 team’s quest for redemption. Hadley Business Association Tree Decorating Contest HADLEY - The Hadley Business Association believes in giving back to the community. Through the Christmas Season they have held decorating contests with cash awards to the lighted homes in Hadley and Lake Luzerne.
