Clifton Park Elks Annual Hoop Shoot® Competition CLIFTON PARK - The Clifton Park Elks Hoop Shoot, the national free throw shooting contest for children ages 8 through 13, will be held at the Southern Saratoga YMCA, 1` Wall Street, Clifton Park, NY on Saturday, November 17 from 1 PM until 3 PM. There is no charge to compete. There are four age categories for boys and girls: 8 to 9; 10 to 11; and 12 to 13 (as of April 1, 2019). Each contestant has 25 shots at the hoop. The boy and girl in each age group with the best scores advance through four tiers of competition to qualify for the national finals in Chicago, IL. STILLWATER - Stillwater junior striker Brooke Pickett, despite having an entire year to plan “Cortland Return Bus Ride 2018,” kept the itinerary remarkably succinct going home from Cortland High School following Sunday’s Class C girls’ soccer state final.

“There will be a lot of singing, a lot of dancing and probably eating a lot of food,” Pickett said.

“And a lot of sleeping for the next few days,” Stillwater sophomore standout Keelyn Peacock said.

The Warriors waited 12 months to eradicate the memory of falling in the 2017 final. Stillwater, paced by the scoring exploits from Pickett, established the lead quickly and kept adding to it in posting a 5-0 championship victory over Little Falls.

“I am just so excited to take this back to Stillwater to celebrate,” Pickett said as she clutched the state title plaque. “Last year was such a bad feeling going home without the (championship) trophy.”

“I can’t even say how proud of this team I am,” Peacock said.

“It is just great to see all of their hard work pay off,” Stillwater coach Christine Ihnatolya said.

Last November, Stillwater dropped a gut-wrenching 3-2 decision in overtime against Allegany-Limestone in the final. What ensued after was Cortland Return Bus Trip 2017. “That three-hour ride home was basically just crying, and I knew I did not want to do that again,” Pickett said. “I wanted to laugh the whole time and celebrate, so that really wasn’t an option for me.”

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Books for Troops would like to thank all those who helped to make our book sale of Nov. 3 a huge success through your donations of books and postage and your attending the book sale. Because of the steady publicity of the Pennysaver/Local First, for several weeks before the sale, and because of word of mouth we had a steady supply of buyers who not only bought books, but donated generously postage money. As a result we raised enough to send 50+ boxes of 40 or more books to our troops to give them the escape they so badly needed. I would also like to thank two of my wonderful volunteers, who wished to go unnamed. They spent two weeks, every day sorting and organizing the thousands of books that were for sale. Without their tireless work, the sale would just have been a pile of random books to

All proceeds will benefit the Mechanicville Emergency Food Pantry. Throughout the month of November, we will accept a food item at the Library for each Mechanicville fine on your card. For example, if you have three fines on your card, you need to bring in three food items to the Library to have your fines waived. Please note that fines from other libraries, replacement costs, and collection agency fees cannot be waived! Even if you have not accumulated fines, we will encourage our community to donate!

American Legion Invites High School Students to Compete in Speech Contest SARATOGA COUNTY Winners will earn scholarship money, chance to compete in national finals - High school students in Saratoga County have been invited by all Local Posts of The American Legion to compete in the 50th Annual American Legion

High School Oratorical Scholarship Program.

The invitation to enter the competition was extended today by Saratoga County Oratorical Chair, William Deuval.

The contest for County students has been arranged with the full cooperation of local school officials and the local High School Guidance Offices who will assist with the contest arrangements.

The subject in the prepared oration portion of the contest must be about some phase of the Constitution of the United States, emphasizing the duties and obligations of a citizen to the United States government. The prepared oration must be the original effort of each contestant and must be 8-10 minutes in length.

The Saratoga Contest will be held in Early De-

cember at a school to be announced later date.

In addition to the awards by winners of the various elimination rounds of competition, college scholarships of $18,000, $16,000, and $14,000 will be awarded to the first through third places in the national finals. Each state winner who competes in the first round of the national contest will receive a $1,500

AMARYLLIS

This is the time of year to start Amaryllis bulbs for flowers to enjoy when winter days are at their shortest and living flowers outside are still months away. Nothing brightens up a winter home like giant Amaryllis flowers.

Amaryllis flowers range in color from pure white to wine red and every variation in between. Banded, striped and bordered have been developed, transforming an already striking plant into an extraordinary specimen indeed! It isn’t uncommon for the flower spike to rise 2 1/2’ above the top of the bulb and produce flowers 7” across...a real show stopper!!

Amaryllis brightens a winter day.

If you’re thinking of purchasing one for someone (or for yourself), be aware that Amaryllis bulbs offered can vary greatly in size....and size does make a difference! The bigger the bulb, the more flowers your get.

When you’re ready to plant your Amaryllis bulb, inspect the bottom and remove any dead roots. Dead roots will be withered and dry. The pot you choose should seem too small for the bulb. It should only be an inch or two wider than the widest part of the bulb. Plant so that 1/2 to 1/3 of the bulb is exposed above the soil and water thoroughly.

Size mattters, so go large.

Place your potted Amaryllis in a warm spot (on top of the refrigerator works for me). Don’t water it again until you notice the flower stem starting to emerge from the top of the bulb. This will take some time so be patient.

When a shoot emerges it’s time to move your Amaryllis to a bright location. Keep the soil lightly moist (not soggy wet). The flower spike will grow very quickly with noticeable growth each day.

When the huge flowers open, you may want to move Potted up and ready to go. your Amaryllis to a cooler location (as low as 50 degrees) to prolong the show of flowers.

After the flowers are spent, cut off the flower stem. By now leaves have probably started to emerge from the bulb.

To get your Amaryllis to flower again, it’s important to promote this leaf growth. Think of the leaves as solar collectors that convert sunlight into energy that’s stored in the bulb for the next flowering cycle. Bright light (but not direct sun) is the source of next year’s flowers. Keep the Giant flowers. soil lightly moist and feed with a soluble plant food at half strength about every two or three weeks. The best way to strengthen your Amaryllis is to sink the pot in a semi-shady flowerbed outside when things warm up in midMay. Sink the pot into the soil so that the exposed part of the bulb is almost covered.

In fall before frost, bring your Amaryllis inside and allow it to dry out completely.

Keep dry and store at 60 to 65 degrees for at least a month. This dry storage period is necessary to stimulate your Amaryllis to begin its next growth cycle. Remember, Amaryllis like to be potbound, so leave it in the same size pot for two or three years.
