Luzerne Music Center Presents The Red Violin Tour of North Country Schools Luzerne Music Center will present “The Red Violin Tour of North Country Schools,” on November 16 and 17, 2011. The tour will take place during the school day at the Hadley-Luzerne Central School District, Lake George School District, and Saratoga Springs City Schools, and serve students in grades four through 12. This tour will feature Elizabeth Pitcairn, President and Artistic Director of the Luzerne Music Center, in partnership with one of the world's most legendary instruments, the "Red" Mendelssohn Stradivarius of 1720. Accompanying Ms. Pitcairn on the tour will be Luzerne Music Center faculty member, pianist Cynthia Elise Tobey. Luzerne Music Center is a summer music camp and performing arts center in Lake Luzerne, NY, where Philadelphia Orchestra members perform and teach. The Center serves 180 talented and deserving music students, ages 11 to 18, every year and devotes approximately 20% of its annual budget to student scholarships. Ms. Pitcairn attended Luzerne Music Center in the summers of 1988 and 1989 and became dedicated to carrying on the tradition of excellence so that other young musicians could have the same opportunity to learn. Saratogian reporter Paul Post will discuss his third book, Soldiers of Saratoga County: From Concord to Kabul. The book is a collection of feature stories he has written for The Saratogian about local veterans from the American Revolution to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Free Beginner Fiber Arts Classes to be held at the Stony Creek Free Library For people who have always wanted to learn to knit, crochet, embroider, or do counted cross-stitch, the Stony Creek Free Library is offering free basic lessons! “Basic Beading Class” at the Stony Creek Free Library Learn to make jewelry and take home a necklace and earrings set that you handcrafted yourself! On Saturday, November 12 from 10am to Noon, instructor Sue Lecuyer will teach “Basic Beading” at the Stony Creek Free Library in Stony Creek, NY. Sue, who works at Saratoga Beads in Saratoga Springs, has been teaching beadwork for 10 years and has been beading for over twenty years. “I sell my work at music festivals and craft shows up and down the east coast” says Sue. The class will include bead stringing, learning how to use crimp beads to attach a clasp, and using beads and headpins to make earrings by making a simple loop in the wire. “We'll use glass seed beads, fire polish beads from the Czech Republic and nickel and lead free findings. We'll string on flexible beading wire. Everyone will make a necklace and earrings”, she adds. We welcome adults and children over 10 years of age to call and register for this class. Cost to attend is $10. For Stony Creek residents the fee is $7. All materials are included. The class size is limited to 10 participants and enrollment will be on a first come, first serve basis. Prior to that, he was the Middle School Principal at Peru Central School District for two years, and the Assistant Principal at Peru Junior-Senior High for one year. He began his career as a high school counselor at the Northeastern Clinton Central School in Champlain, NY, where he served for eight years. Berry earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science and a Master of Science in Education from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. He is a Ph.D. candidate at the University at Albany for Education Administration. He holds NYS School District Administrator (SDA) credential and completed the FutureSuperintendents Academy Program. Mr. Froats has been the Elementary Principal at Dorothy Nolan Elementary School in the Saratoga Springs City School District since 2006. Prior to that he was Elementary Principal at the William H. Barton Intermediate School in the Queensbury Union Free School District (six years) and Assistant Principal at the Queensbury Elementary School (one year). He began his career as a classroom teacher, serving the Brewster Central School District (three years), Yorktown Central School District (two years), and Glens Falls City School District (seven years). Froats earned aBachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from the State University of New York at Oneonta and a Master of Science Degree in Curriculum Development and Instruction from Western Connecticut State University. He completed theEducational Leadership Administration Program through Plattsburgh State University, the Educational Leadership Program at Castleton State College, and the Superintendents Development Program at the State University of New York at Oswego.
