KATERI TEKAKWITHA POWWOW CAPITAL DISTRICT - The Metis Nation of North American and Canadian Bands is holding is annual St. Kateri Tekakwitha Powwow on July 1-4, 2017, at Our Lady of Martyrs Shrine on Noeltner Road in Auriesville, NY. We honor St Kateri at each day’s opening ceremony with the performance of the Kateri Honor Song, sung by Pat Whyland in Mohawk, followed by Grand Entry, during which we are proud to honor all veterans. The public is welcome to attend this exciting event, which includes the Aztec Dancers, native dancers, native food, many vendors, exhibition of native crafts, candy for children in the “Candy Dance”, a free public auction on Sunday about 7pm at the pavilion. Auction items include native crafts, jewelry and much more. Please come & enjoy. This year we are pleased to have the Mobile Veterans Center on powwow grounds on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4. The many services they provide are free to all eligible veterans and their families. Some of these services include: counseling, outreach and education, employment/VA benefits & referrals, and substance abuse assessment/ referral. Donations at the gate are $8/person, $6/seniors.

Free admission to: Children under 5, disabled and nursing home residents. Donations collected at the gate assist with scholarships for native children; some of the proceeds are shared with the Shrine as well.

GRAFTON SUMMER FESTIVAL GRAFTON - The Grafton Summer Festival is scheduled for Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the Grafton Town Park on NYS Route 2, one mile east of the State Park entrance.

Sweet Adelines Coming to Grafton! As part of the Grafton Town Festival, the Capitaland Chorus will be singing at 12 noon on July 15. The Capitaland Chorus is an award winning chapter of the Sweet Adelines International. The women of the chorus have performed a capella four-part harmony in the barbershop style for many groups in the Capital District, including on stage at Proctors, the Saratoga Arts Festival, the Albany Tulip Festival, the Troy Music Hall and Schenectady Central Park. The repertoire includes Side by Side, Fit As a Fiddle, If I Ruled the World, In My Life, Can’t Buy Me Love, It Had to Be You, Let There Be Peace on Earth, and God Bless America. This event is sponsored by the Grafton Historical Society and will be held in the gazebo on the historic village green!

For over 25 years the festival has been held and has featured a craft fair and flea market. This year a record number of vendors is expected. Among the activities are Civil War reenactors called Crenshaws Battery. This will include several soldiers in full garb and a display of tents and equipment and personal weapons. There will also be two cannons on display. Crenshaw’s Battery is sponsored by the Grafton Community Library. Our Lady of the Snow, Mission of Our Lady of Victory, will sponsor a chicken BBQ with up to 300 meals to be served on site or for take-out, from 12:00 noon until the meals are sold out.

Bulletin Board Tickets for the dinner may be obtained and reserved by calling 421-5070. Advance reservations are recommended. The Girl Scouts of Grafton will be providing hamburgers, hotdogs, sausage and peppers and cold soft drinks.

In the morning they will be providing coffee, donuts and other breakfast items for the vendors and patrons.

Homemade baked goods will be on sale by the ladies of Our Lady of the Snow Mission. Our Lady of Victory Youth Ministry will be selling popcorn and doing face painting and other youth-oriented activities.

As always, Sister Kennan McGowan’s Memorial Giant Raffle will be continued with tickets available from most parishioners of Our Lady of the Snow Mission. Tickets will also be sold all day on Saturday, July 15, 2017. We are expecting to have music, singing and entertainment all day. The Hawaii Five Oh, a musical group of high school students from the Troy and Our Lady of Victory area will also be playing for the festival goers. It is expected that the Grafton Volunteer Fire Co. will have a dunking booth and other activities for everyone’s enjoyment.

The Grafton Community Library will have a display of the many offerings of the modern library. The friends of Grafton State Park will have a booth with information about the State Park system and Grafton in particular.

The Dyken Pond Environmental Center in Grafton will also be present with displays and information about their many programs. We are anticipating the presence of the Grafton Snowmobile Club with a display of some of their new snowmobiles. Every day more exciting vendors and community organizations are joining the festival.

RAFFLE OF AMERICAN FLAG FLOWN ON A COMBAT MISSION IN AFGHANISTAN CAPITAL DISTRICT - Books for Troops will be holding a raffle of an American flag flown in our honor on a combat mission in Afghanistan and donated by a troop of airmen to Books for Troops for their appreciation of all the books we sent them during their deployment. This flag has been shared with the public by being on display in the town halls of Halfmoon, Clifton Park and in our office. We have now decided to “pay it forward” by giving it back to the troops by offering it as raffle to raise additional funds to send more books to more troops. The honor of receiving the flag will always be a treasured part of our history, but using the flag as a fundraising will be another way of saying thank you to them.

CLIFTON PARK-HALFMOON PUBLIC LIBRARY TRUSTEE CANDIDATES SOUGHT FOR 2018 CLIFTON PARK - The Board of Trustees of the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library are seeking candidates for three library trustee positions to begin January 1, 2018.

The three trustee positions represent Halfmoon. There are no expiring Clifton Park Trustee positions this year.

In order to qualify, candidates are required to be registered voters residing in Halfmoon within the boundaries of the Library Tax District. Employees of the Library, contractors and vendors to the Library are ineligible.

Residents will vote for the trustees as part of the annual Library Budget vote scheduled for September 14. Two Halfmoon positions are for five years and one position will be a four year term due to the resignation of trustee Mark

Attmore. Trustee term length will be determined by the number of votes for each candidate.

Interested individuals can obtain a nominating petition at the Ask-A-Librarian Desk. The nominating petitions are also available online at www.cphlibrary.org under “About the Library” then “Annual Budget Vote and Trustee Election”. Candidates must collect 25 signatures as indicated on the petition. All petition signatures must be registered voters, residing in Halfmoon within the boundaries of the Library District. Completed nominating petitions and accompanying questionnaires must be returned to the Library by 5pm, Tuesday, August 15.

The Library Board consists of 11 trustees; 7 representing Clifton Park and 4 representing Halfmoon. SARATOGA NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK ANNOUNCES 100 MILE CHALLENGE STILLWATER - With the National Park Service Centennial celebration now over, Saratoga National Historical Park

Bulletin Board is looking forward to the next 100 years of stewardship and encourages you to continue to “Find Your Park!” Get to know your local national park by joining the 100 Mile Challenge – get on the bike or hike the trails and see if you can accumulate 100 miles at the battlefield between May 1 and October 31, 2017. Through this challenge people can enjoy the rich natural and cultural heritage of this local site as they explore their national park, plus get some exercise too!

Anyone can take part in this challenge, from beginners to advanced hikers and cyclists, young and old, human and canine. Pets are great companions for enjoying the outdoors - to complete this challenge, each participating pet must hike 100 miles in the park with their human companion, following park pet policies.

Each participant must register for the challenge. To register, email your name (and your pet) and email address to: SARA_info@nps.gov. To register more than one person, please specify number of participants and their names in the email. The park will periodically send email messages with updates about this challenge, including news about upcoming hiking and biking events in the park, hiking and biking tips, and motivational thoughts. Your email address will not be shared with others.

Each participant that completes 100 miles between May 1 and October 31, 2017 will receive an award for their achievement, but the real awards you’ll get for completing this challenge are the new experiences and memories you’ll gain while on these adventures in your local national park. Hopefully this challenge will inspire you to get out and explore more national parks; after all there are more than 400 throughout the country!

Teaching artist Jay Mankita guides teens in constructing delightfully complicated contraptions that accomplish a simple task. Hands-on fun and real engineering! For teens in grades 6 to 12; registration required.

BOOKS FOR TROOPS NEEDS STRONG VOLUNTEERS CAPITAL DISTRICT - Books for Troops has now reopened its collection site at Halfmoon Town Hall on route 236 in Halfmoon from 9-4 daily. The bin is inside on the left. Once more we thank you for your generous donation of books.

However, our biggest needs right now are for DVDs, Books on Tape, and puzzle books. They help the troops on the long nights of night watches or on those many sleepless nights.

Book drives for these items would be welcome. Books for Troops has continually asked for people who could mail our books to our Post Office two miles away and occasionally to other places. You must be strong enough to lift heavy boxes of books. We mail about once every two weeks and it takes less than two hours. We still have no volunteers.

TOWN OF WATERFORD SENIOR NUTRITION PROGRAM WATERFORD - the Town of Waterford Community Senior Center will be hosting the Saratoga County Office for the Aging Senior Nutrition Program. This program features home delivered meals and congregate meals. This program has been offered in the past through the County at Grace Episcopal Church and will now be operating out of the Town of Waterford Community Senior Center. The Town would like to thank the Grace Church for their service and use of their facility which helped to make this program a success for the past 20 years. SEARCH AND RESCUE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED CAPITAL DISTRICT - The Tri-State Emergency Team is recruiting volunteers to provide wildland and underwater searches within a 100 mile radius of Waterrford, NY. This includes all aspects of field and underwater search. The Tri-State Emergency Team responds when requested by NYS Forest Rangers and other police agencies throughout New York State, Western Vermont and Massachesettes.

We are looking for certified scuba divers, experienced boat handlers, and people who enjoy hiking and the outdoors in general who wish to help people in need. The team will provide training and complete support as needed. Our headquarters is located in Waterford. Applicants need not live in Waterford to volunteer. SARATOGA COUNTY VETERANS PEER CONNECTION PROGRAM SARATOGA COUNTY - The Saratoga County Veterans Peer Connection falls under the New York State PFC Joseph Dwyer Program. The aim is to assist Veterans by pairing them with another Veteran who has had similar life experiences, in order to provide for a meaningful relationship. The program pairs established Veterans with returning Veterans who are experiencing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other re-acclimation challenges. Personalized and informal, these pairings yield understanding and rapport intended to ease the transition from combat to civilian life. The trained mentors have access to local and county resources as well as a clear understanding of state and national opportunities. While the main goal is to provide each Veteran with a meaningful and dependable relationship, other types of assistance may include: job hunting, academic pursuits, life skills, guidance, peer support, encouragement, and understanding. We also have an active mentoring program to Veterans currently in the Saratoga County Jail; have a Vets and Pets program aimed at connecting Veterans with companion animals in conjunction with the Saratoga County Animal Shelter. Currently, Veterans are meeting casually at Saratoga Coffee Traders on Broadway in Saratoga Springs, Tuesday evenings from 6-8 pm for coffee and conversation. All Veterans are welcome.

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Capital District Humane Association, Inc. (CDHA.NET) is an all-volunteer, no-kill animal rescue group that has been saving animals of all kinds throughout the capital region and beyond since 1988. Our goal is to place each animal in our program in a wonderful home where it will be treated like a valued member of the family. We re-home dogs with no charge for surrender.

Since CDHA is a rescue group and doesn’t have a facility of its own, all it’s dogs are in foster homes and dogs are showcased at pet adoption clinics held three times each month. Searching for that special dog? Come join us at an adoption clinic at Latham Farms PETSMART the first and second Saturday of each month and at Clifton Park PETSMART the fourth Saturday of each month.
