ELKS NATIONAL AND STATE SCHOLARSHIPS Applications are now available for the Elks National Foundation and the New York State Elks Association scholarships. There are two types of Elks scholarships. The national scholarship is open to all New York State high school seniors. These seniors need not be the child of a member of the Elks. The state scholarships are for high school seniors whose parent is a member in good standing in the Order of Elks. Forms for these scholarships may be obtained online at the Elks website (www.Elks.org/ enf/scholars). The same application is used for both national and state scholarships, but the state must be submitted with an additional cover page which is available at nys.elks.org or at the student’s school guidance office. CAPITAL AREA BEEKEEPERS CLUB TO MEET The newly formed Capital Area Beekeepers (CAB) Club will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, December 14th, at the East Greenbush Library at 7 PM. All interested bee lovers are welcome to attend, as we encourage members who are beekeepers and potential beekeepers, as well as those who simply want to help save the honey bee. Please note this meeting is on a Thursday and not a Wednesday due to the availability of a meeting room. We will hear Paul Choppy inform us about learning to identify and control “Foul Brood” which has been making a comeback in recent years. Lively and educational participation and discussion is encouraged. This club is members-driven, and will only function with their ideas and needs. If you need a place to keep your bees, we may have some locations available. There will not be a meeting in January, but we will meet again in February. ANNUAL YULE LOG CELEBRATION On Sunday, December 10th, from 1-3PM, the story of the Yule Log and the Winter Solstice will be shared at the Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center, followed by a search for the hidden Yule Log. We start the afternoon by sharing the traditional story of the Yule Log and the science of the Winter Solstice. Folks will be given a few hints before searching for the hidden Yule Log. Once found, it will be carried back and enjoyed at the outdoor campfire. Peter Dubacher from the Berkshire Bird Paradise will be at the campfire with a special live bird friend to share his experiences with rehabilitating and caring for his many birds. Hot chocolate and light snacks will be provided or feel free to bring your own snacks to share. Holiday crafts and greens will be available to make and take home. BOY SCOUT TROOP 528 MONTHLY BOTTLE DRIVE Troop 528 holds bottle drives on the 2nd Saturday of each month, this month is Saturday, December 9th. Returnable bottles and cans can be dropped off next to the Troop’s signs located at main intersections in the Town of Poestenkill or placed curbside if you live along one of the routes on the morning of the bottle drive, or dropped off in the bin behind the North Greenbush Town Hall any time. Rensselaer Plateau Alliance 2nd Thursday Lecture Series presents The History and Craft of Blacksmithing, with Jim Moran. The craft of blacksmithing has its origins in ancient times, when the Hittites started working iron to make weapons at the end of the Bronze age. Jim Moran will discuss the history of blacksmithing through the beginning of the iron age and how blacksmithing moved across Europe and into modern times. He will then focus on early blacksmithing in our region and will bring us up to date, describing how blacksmithing is in use today. If people have old iron/steel items that they can carry in, Jim will discuss their use and construction. An active blacksmith for 45 years, Jim Moran is Past President of the Northeast Blacksmiths Association.

Center Brunswick United Methodist Church Announces Availability of Financial Aid Grant for June 2018 Tamarac High School Graduates. The Finance Committee of the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church announced that it will award $500 to a student to be selected from the Tamarac High School Class of 2018. The money may be used for any type of expenses related to further education. Students do not have to belong to this Church or any other church or religion to be eligible for this award. Interested students must apply for this award no later than April 1, 2018. Application forms can be obtained from the school’s guidance department, directly from the Church, or downloaded from our website (www.Center BrunswickUMC.company). This award is given in memory of Harold and Mabel Keyes, whose last will and testament created the trust that provides the funding for it. Harold and Mabel were prominent members of the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church for many years. Mabel taught in the Brunswick schools that preceded Tamarac, and continued teaching Sunday School for many years after she retired. Through this award, her love of helping young people learn and grow will continue to reach the youth of our community. ST. NICHOLAS DAY AT CRAILO STATE HISTORIC SITE Crailo State Historic Site will host a St. Nicholas Day Open House, on December 9, 2017 from 12:00pm until 4:00pm. For the Dutch settlers of this region, The Feast of St. Nicholas was a day of celebration with favorite food and treats. Children checked their shoes, left out the previous night, for presents from Sinterklaas. On December 9th, Crailo will hold an open house with food, crafts, shopping and a visit from Sinterklaas! Children can decorate their own wooden shoes, make a Christmas card or felt ornament. For an additional fee, make your own cookie in our cellar kitchen with our wooden cookie molds. Afterwards, visit with Sinterklaas. Good children will receive a small gift. Admission to the house is free. During the event, the entire museum will be open for exploring. NEWS FROM THE AVERILL PARK CSD Just like the fall home football games, all home basketball games and wrestling matches will be free of charge for all students and AP employees. The Board of Education is not charging admission to these sports in support of one of the goals of the district this year, which is to productively engage students in their school community. Game schedules are available on the district website –averillpark.k12.ny.us/programs/athletics—and click on “Schedules.” Come out and support your Warriors! Averill Park High School and Algonquin Middle School Student Governments are collecting new, unwrapped toys through Dec. 15 for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. Boxes are located in both schools. The annual Toys for Tots collection is in memory of Abigail Dutcher who passed away in December 2012.
