PAM TATAR ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR AP SCHOOL BOARD My name is Pam Tatar and I am asking for your support as I run for re-election for the Averill Park School Board. During the past 6 years serving as a board member, I have stayed focused on our district’s goals and policies to improve student achievement, and concentrated on maintaining the best possible programs. At the same time, I have always strived to stay aware of District spending, assuring that we are following our budget guidelines. I have supported budgets that have controlled expenses while maintaining those best programs, always looked at the big picture, anticipating what lies ahead in our future, both financially and academically. I have remained open-minded, relied on facts and remained unswayed by any personal bias or vested interests.

In order to be better equipped to solve difficult problems facing our district, I have devoted a substantial amount of time participating in New York State School Board Association (NYSSBA) training This past June, I was honored with the NYSSBA’S Board Mastery Award. More recently, I was proudly appointed to the NYSSBA Cultural Diversity Committee. Having been part of NYSSBA’s advocacy team, I have supported and will continue to support the mission to advance needed school funding reforms and seek mandate relief that will truly benefit our schools.

At a time when dramatic changes are happening in the world we live in, we need to prepare our students for the increased demands of the 21st century. GIRL SCOUT LEADER / VOL. RECRUITMENT Girl scouts is a wonderful organization in our local community! Our Girl Scout program would not be success without the great troop leaders and neighborhood level organizers. At this time, we are looking for new leaders and new volunteers for the next school year. There are many different ways people can volunteer both directly and indirectly with the girls. Leading a troop is a big commitment, but it is so much fun and you get to see the girls grow so much each year. There are also neighborhood level positions that relate to finances, cookie sales, specific age levels, and Girl Scout programming. On a troop level, we are especially focusing on starting at least three troops for girls attending Van Rensselaer School, starting and maintaining troops for girls attending Red Mill and Bell Top, and starting troops with girls from private schools in our area such as Parker School and the Woodland Montessori School. There are teen troops for girls attend Goff Middle School and Columbia High School that we maintain as well. On a neighborhood level, we need a neighborhood cookie manager to coordinate the cookie sales, and other various positions.

We will be having an informational meeting on Tuesday, May 10th, at 7pm at St. Mary’s Church on Routes 9 and 20 (near K-Mart) to talk to potential volunteers and community members that could help our girl scout community. We would like to match up your skills and interest with our group’s needs to make our Girl Scout community “A Great Place to be a Girl Scout”! There’s a new State law that went into effect April 1st regarding computer recycling. It requires that computer manufacturers accept your old computer for recycling when you buy a new one.

But we at the Guilderland and Greenbush Computer Fare stores have been three steps ahead of them for years.

1st. We have always accepted old computers for recycling whether you are buying a new one from us or not. That’s green.

2nd. We don’t automatically recycle everything we get. Some will be refurbished and reused. Very green.

SCHODACK RESIDENTS CAN DISPOSE ELECTRONICS ITEMS FOR FREE Schodack residents can now dispose of many electronics items for free at the town transfer station, Councilwoman Debra Young announced.The town recently applied to become an electronic collection site in order to allow the Transfer Station to continue to accept these electronic items. The electronics items that can be disposed for free include a computer with a monitor, computer tower, printers, radios and stereos.

SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE The following is an article I wrote which was published in the Schenectady Gazette on 1-23-93: “On the front page of the Jan. 8 (1993) Gazette, I saw a wire service article from Little Rock about the deficit and Bill Clinton’s plans to deal with it.

In describing the Bush administration’s slightly higher deficit figures, the journalist used words like “soaring” and “bleak”.

Nowhere in the article was mention of the fact that Clinton ’s own figures – the ones he based his deficit reduction pledge on – are even higher than those projected by the Bush Administration.

The article blamed George Bush exclusively for this all-time high deficit. In the entire article, focusing on the budget, the author never mentioned the word; Congress.

Mr. Bush’s tax increase of 1990 is well known as the largest tax increase in history. The revenue was targeted to reduce the deficit to $50 billion in five years. It failed to do so when Congress spent it all and then some, causing the deficit to double.

President Reagan tried to balance the budget in 1986. At that time it was the largest tax increase in history. It called on Congress to reduce spending by $2 for every $1 of increased revenue. It failed when Congress refused to cut spending.

In light of previous failures, we all know that increasing taxes without reducing spending, cannot balance the budget. We are now giving Congress $1.29 trillion to spend and Clinton still doesn’t think we are paying enough taxes. If you don’t know what a trillion is, brace yourself. It’s a million millions. That’s a 1 followed by 12 zeros.

George Bush (That’s not George W but his father) tried going head-to-head with Congress. He vetoed nearly every spending bill put before him. In doing so, he reduced the projected deficit by over $100 billion. He also ended his chance at a second term. Such is the power of Congress. All those bills are still out there. In fact, toward the end of Bush’s term, Congress shelved some bills it knew he would veto, opting to present them to the new president when he takes office.”

In light of the debate over cutting federal spending today, with liberals suggesting we need to raise taxes, I felt it would be good for younger voters to know that Congress has been crying for more money since before you were born. ~David R. OPEN MIKE AND COFFEE HOUSE PLANNED AT ST. TIMOTHY’S Saturday, May 7th, will mark the first annual Open Mike and Coffee House at St. Timothy’s, 470 Winter Street Extension, North Greenbush.

Chairman Jim Macris stated, “The fun will get underway at 7 pm. We are inviting all local performers to join in this special evening. DORI SALISBURY RUNNING FOR AVERILL PARK SCHOOL BOARD Over the years, I’ve sat through more than my share of Board meetings. I’ve watched person after person, be they parent, student, teacher, bus driver, or concerned taxpayer, plead their case before the Board of Education, seeking answers.

I’ve fought for my child and yours, arguing for AP classes, sports, music, and probably any other thing you can think of.

Why? Because I care about the success of this District and its students.

My family is fortunate to have graduated four generations from Averill Park Central Schools. My parents, Roger and Sandy Young, were members of the first class to graduate from the “new” high school. I am a member of the Class of 1979 at APHS. My husband, Bill, and I chose to raise our only child, Jason, in this district, providing him with all the benefits Averill Park had to offer and preparing him for a successful future.

I love Averill Park. It’s been my home for my entire life. My son and I were both fortunate to be educated by wonderful instructors who very carefully molded us into the adults we’ve become. The administrators nurtured and supported us, both as students and as adults.

My dad instilled in me a strong sense of community and responsibility to that community. This is why I am running for the Board of Education. I believe that every member of the district has a right to expect representation from its elected officials. I also believe that the Board of Education is accountable to its constituency. I believe that there needs to be a system of checks and balances in this district. I believe that our first priority MUST be to our educational programs but that priority must be balanced by what the community can bear. I believe that every student deserves the same opportunities my son and I both had. I believe that my 20+ years of financial analysis and accounting experience has prepared me well to tackle this task.

My name is Cheryl Glanton; I am a mother of five AP students from Kindergarten through a freshman in high school. I understand firsthand how important it is to provide an excellent education for all the children in our community; therefore, I am pleased to announce my candidacy for AP Board of Education.

In addition to being a parent, I am a businesswoman, who for 17 years worked my way up through the ranks of manufacturing management to become Global Sales and Operations Planning Manager for GE Plastics-Specialty Film and Sheet. I also spent time as a stay at home mom, and currently I am a project manager for NYSERDA. As plant manager I had to make hard decisions, manage a significant budget at the line item detail and react to rapidly changing market conditions to meet business commitments. I made decisions by talking to people with multiple views and experience, digging into the data available and asking questions. I believe these are the skills required of the Board of Education. I am active in the Miller HillSand Lake PTA, currently serving as treasurer. Previously I led the team that completed the fundraising, design and construction of the new Miller Hill-Sand Lake playground. I am a lector and teach faith formation for St. Henry’s Church. Since 2007 I have been part of the AP Long Range Planning Committee.

Here is my agenda: Provide the best education possible for all the students in the district, which includes academics, athletics and extracurricular activities. I recognize that taxpayers don’t provide a “blank check”; every penny must be spent wisely. In order for our district to retain its excellent reputation long term, we must work together—taxpayers, teachers, administrators and board members alike— to ensure that our children have the highest quality education possible so they can thrive and contribute to society and our community in the future. AP TAXPAYERS BOE CANDIDATES FORUM It is vital that we elect School Board candidates who will balance the need to deliver a quality education to students and property owner’s ability to pay the bill. The district needs candidates who understand the fiscal reality we find ourselves in today.

We can no longer afford BOE members who simply rubber stamps the wishes of school administration and the teachers unions whose only solution to the problem is to raise taxes.

This needs to change on May 17th.

The reality is we have overbuilt and overspent as a district.

The escalating costs of retirement benefits and health care are unsustainable. A 2% Property Tax Cap next year would mean an increase of $600,000, which would not even cover the increase in pension contributions of $1,100,000 for this year. How then do we pay the increased fuel costs, health care costs, not to mention the salary increases for union teachers, even after their contract expires guaranteed by the “Triborough Amendment”? The answer is “We don’t!” The cuts will continue each year. Meanwhile, the “For Sale” signs continue to appear as more of our neighbors look to move away from the regressive taxes we endure in Rensselaer County. Gasoline is over $4 a gallon and your grocery bill keeps going up. We need to change course.

Yet, we lay off music teachers, art teachers and business teachers in the classrooms, but we fail to cut a single position from the administration. What’s wrong with this picture?

SAND LAKE VETERANS’ MEMORIAL PARK COMMITTEE REPORT Have you noticed all the progress at the Sand Lake Veterans’ Memorial Park? The sidewalks are in place, some of the granite has been hung on the wall and the final grading and seeding is almost finished. We still have a ways to go and we plan on some fundraisers this summer and fall.

Simply Accounting Plus Business Training Center FRIENDS OF NASSAU FREE LIBRARY ANNUAL SPRING BAZAAR The Spring Bazaar will be held on Saturday, May 21st, from 10AM to 3PM on the library grounds located at 18 Church Street in Nassau, (parking at St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church â&#x20AC;&#x201C; across Rt. 20). The bazaar will feature childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book author, Lois Truax, with her first publication, Grandmothers Are Magic, available for sale. Truax is well known from her familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s business, Jewelry Repair Center, Schodack. She has fulfilled a life-long dream to see her words in print and encourages others to follow creative aspirations. Also featured will be the beautiful hand-made quilt donated for the annual raffle by Pat Piniazek first inspired to guilt during the 1976 bicentennial. She originally joined the Quilt Guild in Schenectady and later launched Eastside Quilters in the Nassau libraryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meeting room. The library has been beneficiary of many quilts over the years. The raffle winner will be drawn during the bazaar. There will also be booths with jewelry, perennial and ground cover plants, childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s books and baked goods for sale.

Ampersand, well known for folk and traditional music, will liven up the event with their rich voices and traditional instruments. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hard Tack and Home Fires: Songs of the Civil Warâ&#x20AC;? will be for sale, an ideal addition to anyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s music collection with the 150th anniversary of the Civil War beginning.

2011 ART IN THREE DIMENSIONS Averill Park high school sculpture students are at it again â&#x20AC;&#x201C; creating beautiful pieces that were chosen to be featured in the 2011 Art in Three Dimensions student exhibition hosted by Mohonasen High School. This highly competitive student exhibition was organized by the Capital Area Art Supervisors. Each suburban council school submitted 20 three-dimensional works to be judged by sculptor, Michael Wells and ceramic artist, David Smyth.

Averill Park was well represented with the most selected entries of all the schools. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everyone received an award and there were many schools represented, it made me feel special that two of my pieces got in,â&#x20AC;? said by senior, Jen Engwer who many at APHS know as a very talented ceramic and over-all artist.

During this difficult time of budget cuts and the uncertain future of art programs at the High School, Averill Park art students are proud that their art teachers entered their work into numerous shows throughout the Capital District.

2011 QUESTAR III HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONAL ART EXHIBIT Averill Park High School Art students, Brooke Ryan, Emily Rosenberg, Kristina Melius and Sarah Goldberg were selected to participate in the 22nd Annual Questar III invitational student art show. Juror, and president of the Arts Center of the Capital Region, Amy Williams chose forty works from eighteen schools in Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene counties.

For its 22nd year, the Questar III High School Invitational will take place from April 13- May 13, 2011. This year Questar III will join forces with the local public broadcasting WMHT to display the student work in its North Greenbush headquarters.

At the opening reception on April 13th, juror, Amy Williams gave brief critiques and recognized outstanding work with merit awards. Emily Rosenbergâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s painting, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Nightâ&#x20AC;? was awarded 2nd place. Brooke Ryanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mixed media sculpture â&#x20AC;&#x153;Medicine Manâ&#x20AC;? received an honorable mention.

This exhibit is open to the public on Tuesdays from 9am â&#x20AC;&#x201C; noon; Thursdays from 2p.m. to 5p.m. or by appointment.

By Morgan McEvilly All Warrior fans welcome! This past week has been a terrific week for your spring athletes. The teams are getting stronger as the weather is getting nicer.

The lacrosse team played Bethlehem High school last Saturday.

Both teams fought the entire game with very competitive play.

The Warriors put five points on the scoreboard, but sadly the Eagles had 13. Morgan Dupont scored two while Molly O’Bryan, Andrea Bond, and Megan Keeler had one point each.

Congratulations to Jo-Jo Burridge for her first assist of the season! The next game will be today at Shaker High school at 4:15pm, please come and support your ladies.

Although the softball game was rained out last week, the girls are ready to take on the Bethlehem Eagles tomorrow away.

The game will start at 4:15pm, so please come early to cheer the girls on!

The boys’ baseball teams also had a lot of rain last week, but still managed to practice and are prepared for their night game against Bethlehem. If you are coming out to watch the girls game tomorrow, then you can go to the boys field right after at 7:30pm. Good luck boys!

CEO TO HOLD SECOND ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT The Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO) will hold its second annual Spring Swing Golf Outing on Monday, May 16th, at Burden Lake Country Club in Averill Park. MORRIS SELECTED NAT’L POP WARNER 1st TEAM ALL-AMERICAN SCHOLAR Rachel Morris, a 5th grader at Red Mill School in East Greenbush, has been selected as a 2010-2011 National Pop Warner First Team All-American Scholar. This is the highest award bestowed upon Pop Warner Little Scholars’ participants to recognize their academic excellence and achievements. Rachel is 1 of 35 cheerleaders who rank academically among the top 1% of all Pop Warner participants nationwide. RELAY FOR LIFE OF RENSSELAER COUNTY Relay For Life is a community event held by the American Cancer Society with the goal of generating awareness, honoring survivors and loved ones lost, and uniting together in the fight against cancer. Saturday, June 11th, at 6PM, Joe Bruno Stadium of Troy, NY will be the host of Rensselaer County’s Relay For Life and is extending the opportunity/challenge to all community members to contribute to the cause. All funds raised support the American Cancer Society’s mission to help people stay well, help people get well, find cures, and fight back.

The overnight event includes a night full of activities that will reflect the night’s theme, “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back”.

These funds are being awarded through the Dorothy S. Tolscer Memorial Fund in memory of a longstanding member of the garden club.

Interested teachers from the elementary, middle school or high school level (both public and private schools are welcome) are invited to submit a letter of request by May 20th outlining their gardening plan and including an approximate budget of their needs. A total of $500 is available for these grants.

Greetings and best wishes to everyone in the City of Rensselaer. As Rensselaer’s representative to the County Legislature, I am happy to report to you on the actions taken by the Rensselaer County Legislature at our April 12, 2011 meeting.

Costs for mandated services are increasing constantly and putting a real strain on middle class taxpayers. In particular, costs for public assistance programs have increased during the past two years.

These programs are designed to offer assistance to those in need.

To help ensure the integrity of these programs, I proposed a resolution supporting legislation introduced in the State Assembly that would require any adult receiving public assistance, particularly welfare, to first undergo a drug test. Along with the increase for public assistance costs, there have been reports about potential misuse of taxpayer-funded ambulance services by residents receiving Medicaid. Legislators have begun collecting information about these instances of potential misuse. In some cases, based on information gathered by the legislative review, persons called for taxpayerfunded ambulance rides despite not having a serious or lifethreatening illness or condition. Rides were given to people complaining of sore feet, headaches, intoxication and other minor reasons. With costs for programs like Medicaid reaching record levels, there is ample reason for concern about these costs. I was also pleased to welcome the Rensselaer Rams 5th and 6th Grade Boys Basketball team to congratulate them on a season where the team finished with a record of 12-1, with the one loss happening after the Rams lost by a single point. The Rams include Kieran Teator, Jalen Wilcox, Mike Stammel, Jaden Citizen, Ethan Radley, Dillon Biancaniello, Kevin “Tank” Billetts, Lamond Armwood, Davonte Foreman, Reese Rose, Aaron Williams, Josh Nye and Kenny Kenyon, and included coaches Kevin, Andre and Mike.

The Legislature adjourned in memory of William A. Carpinello, who was a well-known businessman in the Rensselaer area. Bill was an Army Ranger during World War II before operating his family’s ice business.

HOW SHALL WE LIVE IN THE TRUTH OF EASTER May 8, 2011 is Mother’s Day, the day the Stuyvesant and Nassau Reformed Churches join the world in celebration of Moms and all those who serve in ways that Moms serve. The East Greenbush Central School District’s Continuing Education program announces its May 2011 Six-Hour Insurance/ Point Reduction and Five-Hour Pre-Licensing classes.

The Six-Hour Driver Training Associates Insurance/Point Reduction course reduces car liability, collision, and no-fault insurance premiums by 10% for 3 years and may remove up to 4 points off your license, as determined by the Department of Motor Vehicles. It will be held in two evening sessions: Tuesday, May 17th, and Thursday, May 19th, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. both evenings.

SALEM UNITED METHODIST CHURCH WELCOMES YOU! Located in West Sand Lake, just south of Route 43 off of 150 on Shaver Road, the Salem United Church welcomes you and your family and friends with Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors! We have an active congregation that invites you to join us in worship, in reaching out to the community, in loving and serving others. We offer Christian Education class for all ages on Sunday mornings at 9:15. Worship follows at 10:30.

This Sunday we will celebrate the Festival of the Christian Home and Mother’s day. Our service will include an anthem by the adult Choir and a chime piece by our Youth Choir. Please join us!

Also on this weekend - On Friday we will enjoy Daughter’s Night Out. Anyone who is a daughter is welcome to join us at 7:00 in the Fellowship Hall. Our guest speaker, who is a master quilter, will speak about the history of quilting. The younger daughters will spend time working on a craft project. We will have a dessert buffet! Join us!

Salem UMC also welcomes the Garden Club on Saturday for their annual plant sale on Saturday!! The early bird certainly gets the worm when it comes to this sale! The plants sell quickly!

Come and support them. And don’t forget to make your reservations for our Lobster Dinner by calling the church at 674-3106. The dinner is May 14th, however it is by reservation only. Reservations must be made by May 11th. Last year it was a sellout!!! Hope to see you there!!
