EAST GREENBUSH FIRE COMPANY WINS TWO TROPHIES The East Greenbush Fire Company was awarded two trophies for their participation in the 125th Annual Convention of the Hudson Valley Volunteer Fireman’s Association held in West Glens Falls on June 19, 20 and 21, 2014. The Hudson Valley Association is comprised of member fire companies from counties that are contiguous to the Hudson River, from Essex County in the north to Rockland and Westchester Counties in the south. Annually, members gather on the third weekend in June to discuss and vote upon items of importance to the organization, as well as conduct business to continue the vitality of the multi-county firefighter association.

As part of the business portion of the convention, Michael Benson, Jr. of the East Greenbush Fire Company was elected to be Rensselaer County Vice President. The convention also features two parades, a Mardi Gras themed parade on Friday evening and a competitive dress parade on Saturday afternoon.

The East Greenbush unit was awarded the first place trophy for the Most Firematic Theme among the 41 fire companies participating in the Mardi Gras parade. On Saturday, the fire company was awarded the first place Best Appearing Parade Dress Unit trophy for their efforts in the line of march during the parade, which featured over 100 units. The East Greenbush Fire Company thanks the West Glens Falls Fire Company for a successful 2014 Hudson Valley Convention.

PATROON DOG TRAINING CLUB NEW BEGINNERS OBEDIENCE CLASS Patroon Dog Training Club will be starting a New Beginners Obedience Class on Monday, July 7th. The class will help you teach your dog basic commands like, to sit, to lie down, to walk with you on a leash, to come when called, and in general, to improve his/her manners.

Each month one student in each grade, 9-12, is selected for this award by a faculty committee after a review of all nominations. For the month of May, 2014, the students selected to receive this recognition are: Freshman – Nick Morris, Sophomore – Taylor Wilcox, Junior – Lauren Benevento, Senior – AJ Barber Nicholas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Morris, is nominated for being an awesome example of a hardworking, dependable student. He has a full challenging schedule at Maple Hill and is willing to help others whenever he can. Here at Maple Hill, he plays on the Lacrosse and Wrestling teams. Outside of school, Nick enjoys riding his dirt bike. Nick plans to go to college after high school.

Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Wilcox, is nominated for being a polite, bright, respectful, and conscientious student.

Here at Maple Hill, she plays basketball, is a member of SADD and plays in the high school band. Outside of school, she enjoys working with her horses. Taylor plans to go to college possibly for something in the medical field.

Lauren, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Benevento, is nominated for being a great student and setting some lofty goals to study foreign studies in college. Here at Maple Hill, she is a member of International Club and has gone to China twice on Maple Hill International Club trips. Outside of school, Lauren enjoys playing the piano and drawing. After high school, Lauren plans to go to SUNY Albany to study foreign language.

Adrian, son of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Barber, is nominated for stepping up as a leader in his academics, athletics, and co-curricular opportunities this year. Here at Maple Hill, he is a member of Cross Country, Track and Field, along with participating in Science Olympiad. Adrian is gaining valuable experience interning with MicrOrganics Technologies – a company located in our middle school basement. Outside of school, he works at Hannaford and The Classbook.com warehouse. Adrian plans on going to Western New England University to study Engineering.

As legislative representatives of District 2, including the towns of East Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we are happy to provide our constituents with a report on actions taken at the June 10, 2014 legislative meeting.

At the June 10 meeting, legislators took action to keep an important drug task force in operation after the expiration of state grant funding.

Many in the region and county have been concerned by a sharp increase in drug offenses, particularly offenses related to illegal use and sale of opiates. The county drug task force, including two investigators assigned to the District Attorney’s office, has fought to reduce drug crimes. These positions were funded through the state Operation Impact grant.

Unfortunately, state funding priorities shifted from drug investigation to prevention of illegal gun violence. That created a funding shortfall which could have led to the loss of the two investigators and a reduction in overall drug investigations in the county.

The Legislature approved a resolution to provide funding to the Sheriff’s Department to allow for the two investigators to continue working to prevent drug crimes. The resolution passed unanimously at the June 10 meeting, with lawmakers recognizing the need to fight growing instances of drug abuse in the area.

Legislators also approved a resolution supporting state legislation, now under consideration in both the State Senate and Assembly, to improve long term care provisions for veterans.

Legislators also approved resolutions for the purchase of materials for repair and maintenance of county roads, and to obtain equipment needed for road work. Please be cautious travelling through work sites during the summer construction season to ensure workers get home to their families.

The Legislature will also hold a public hearing on the proposed Hudson Valley Community College 2014-2015 budget prior to the legislative meeting on July 8 at 5:30 p.m. Residents can learn more about the college’s plans by visiting www.hvcc.edu.

AIRMAN PRICE GRADUATES BASIC TRAINING Air Force Airman Frederick L. Price graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Price is the son of Frederick L. and Debra R. Price, grandson of Barbra J. Johnson and nephew of Stephanie V. and Philip Leslie, all of Troy, N.Y. He is a 2013 graduate of Troy High School, Troy, N.Y.

There will be a large number of items donated by area merchants in a Silent Auction area for which attendees may bid. C. MILLER NAMED to DEAN’S LIST at WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY Christian Miller from Wynantskill, NY was named to the Spring 2014 Dean’s List at Wake Forest University. Students who achieve a 3.4 and no grade below a C were named to the list.

RENSS. CO. 4-H PRESENTATION EVENTS Rensselaer County 4-H had eight youth present at the Regional Horse Communications Event and six youth present at the Regional General Interest Presentations Event in April, 2014.

Members selected a wide range of topics to research and develop a presentation to deliver and be evaluated.

We would like to congratulate Jessica Brown, Abby Reeves, Elyse Scott, Ella Mary Yonkers, Kerry Judge, Taylor Hansen, Brittany Whitford and Brigham Logue. The Junior Team of Abby and Jessica placed 1st; Senior Team Elyse and Ella Mary placed 1st; Senior Presenters Kerry and Brittany placed 2nd and 3rd respectively; Junior Presenters Brigham and Taylor placed 1st and 5th respectively. Dan Wrenn, Maddie Hoyt, Emma Woolley, Sarah Malenfant, Madelynne and Pierce Hurd presented at the General Interest Presentation event and we were proud to send such a great group of delegates.

Some of the youth that presented at these events were asked to represent Rensselaer County and the Capital Region at the state level. Four members from the Regional Horse Communications event presented again in May at Cornell University. Kerry competed, as well as Brigham, who placed 2nd in the state contest for Junior Individuals and a very special Congratulations to Elyse and Ella Mary who placed 1st in the state, and earned seats on the NYS Horse Communications National Team, which will compete in the Eastern National 4-H Roundup in Kentucky in the fall. Pierce and Sarah were two of the six chosen to move onto the State Competition from the General Interest Presentation event and Maddie Hoyt was first alternate. Since Pierce was unable to attend, Maddie took his place at the state event scoring 183 points earning a gold seal and the silver medal (second place overall) in the demonstration category and Sarah earned 136 points earning a silver seal in the demonstration category. Congratulations!

We are proud of all our members who represented us at the regional and state events, and thank them for all the hard work they put into their presentations; and to all the parents and volunteers that provided support to our members. Good luck to Ella and Elyse as they continue to compete.

N. RAGOSTA JOINS US AIR FORCE UNDER DELAYED ENTRY PROGRAM Nicholas A. Ragosta has joined the United States Air Force under the Delayed Entry Program. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to enlist and delay going into basic military training for up to one year.

Qualified men and women are eligible to receive skill training, experience, and education benefits. After completing basic military training, airmen receive specialized technical training in one of more than 140 job career fields. He will report to Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, for basic training in August.

Ragosta is the son of Nancy and Salvatore Ragosta of Poestenkill. He is a 2013 graduate of Averill Park High School.

WALK OF LOVE Kaitlyn Bechand, age 8 and a 3rd grade student at Tamarac Elementary School, recently raised over $700 for the Northeast Kidney Foundation.

The Nassau Community Band will present a free to the public concert on Thursday, July 10th, at the Village Commons Gazebo in Nassau. Located on John Street, just off US Route 20, the program starts at 7 pm. Community bands have a long history in Nassau, dating back to the post-Civil War era.

The group today is made up of volunteers ranging from college students to folks well into their retirement years.

The program will offer a mixture of contemporary, popular and traditional selections ranging from Latin to ‘70s pop, American marches and plenty to allow the audience to sing-a-long. Lawn chairs or blankets are always a good idea. For more information, call 766-2291.

Girl Scout Troop 1474 has a learning night at 16 handles. The girls learn about entrepreneurship, corporate philanthropy and even some basic plumbing. All had fun learning the day to day operations of the business.

With local high school students having celebrated the achievement of their success, I would like to congratulate all students who graduated. This is an accomplishment that will allow for a future of possibilities. To local college students who have graduated in the past month, and to all of our community members moving up this year, congratulations. You are the future, and from everyone at Town Hall, we wish you the best of luck.

In June, the Town held the Spotlight on Youth awards ceremony for youth in our community. Award recipients are nominated by a teacher or administrator for their hard work, dedication and for what they contribute to the community. This year we had a great group of students that we presented awards to.

I would also like to acknowledge Officer Dan Keegan on his retirement from the Town of East Greenbush. Teach your children the importance of water safety and the rules of the pool. We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable summer. EAST GREENBUSH LIBRARY SEEKS TRUSTEE CANDIDATES

JESUS SAYS; STOP, TAKE A REST On Communion Sunday, July 6, 2014, the message shared in the Gospel of Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30 is “Jesus rests between his teaching and performing miracles in his ministry.” In these verses, Jesus says: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest;” and “... and you will find rest for your souls.” In his time, Jesus was one of many traveling preachers and teachers. He soon became more than just one in the crowd because of what he offered: In the case of this text, he offers rest. In the sermon, the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will reference Jesus not only promising rest, but practicing rest. In a time of chronic hurry and busyness, Jesus’ gift and witness of rest is needed like never before. Join us and come to understand that learning the benefits of rest will help us to desire it more and our productivity will be greater.

Beginning on this Sunday, and continuing through August 31, 2014, the Church at Nassau Reformed will begin worship at 10 a.m., 43 Church Street, one half mile east of the only traffic light in the village. N. CULLINGS GRADUATES MAGNA CUM LAUDE from BABSON COLL. Natalie Cullings, daughter of Ned and Erin Cullings of Castleton, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Babson College in Wellesley, Ma., May 17, 2014. Natalie was selected to be the student commencement speaker. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management with a double concentration in Marketing and Literary / Visual Arts. At Babson, Natalie was a student ambassador for The Center of Career Development and a peer mentor in The Writing Center. She interned at the marketing firms of Intrepid Labs in Boston and Mechanica in Newburyport. Natalie graduated from Holy Spirit School and Columbia High School Class of 2010. Although Natalie has received numerous awards, the one that she held in the highest esteem was being an annual recipient of the Alyssa Bouchey Memorial Scholarship from Columbia High School. She is now employed at Customer Portfolios in Boston as a Marketing Program Specialist.

MANSFIELD UNIVERSITY CONCERT CHOIR TO COMPETE AT WORLD CHOIR GAMES The Mansfield University Concert Choir, directed by Peggy Dettwiler, will compete at the 2014 World Choir Games, the largest international choral competition in the world, July 9-19 in Riga, Latvia.

Thousands of singers in 491 choirs from 59 countries around the world are already registered to join together in festive competition for gold medals and championships at the event known as “the Olympics for Choirs.”

DEC Urges New Yorkers Not To Disturb Fawns and Other Young Wildlife. New Yorkers should keep their distance and not disturb newborn fawns or other young wildlife as many animals are in the peak season for giving birth, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) cautioned. It is not unusual to see a young bird crouched in the yard or a young rabbit in the flower garden, both apparently abandoned. Finding a fawn deer lying by itself is also fairly common. Many people assume that young wildlife found alone are helpless and need assistance for their survival, however, in nearly all cases this is a mistake and typically human interaction does more damage than good.

Those that see a fawn or other newborn wildlife should enjoy their encounter, but keep it brief, maintain some distance and do not attempt to touch the animal.

Young wildlife quickly venture into the world on shaky legs or fragile wings. While most are learning survival from one or both parents, some normally receive little or no care. Often, wild animal parents stay away from their young when people are near. For all of these young animals, the perils of survival are a natural part of life in the wild.

White-tailed deer fawns present a good example of how human intervention with young wildlife can be problematic. Most fawns are born during late May and the first half of June. While fawns are able to walk shortly after birth, they spend most of their first several days lying still. During this period a fawn is also usually left alone by the adult female (doe) except when nursing. People occasionally find a lone fawn and mistakenly assume it has been orphaned or abandoned, which is very rare. Fawns should never be picked up. If human presence is detected by the doe, the doe may delay its next visit to nurse.

A fawn’s best chance to survive is by being raised by the adult doe. Fawns nurse three to four times a day, usually for less than 30 minutes at a time, but otherwise the doe keeps her distance. This helps reduce the chance that she will attract a predator to the fawn. The fawn’s protective coloration and ability to remain motionless all help it avoid detection by predators and people.

If a fawn or other young wildlife is spotted, “If You Care, Leave It There.” In nearly all cases that is the best thing for the animal. DO NOT consider young wildlife as possible pets.

This is illegal and is bad for the animal. Wild animals are not well suited for life in captivity and they may carry diseases that can be given to people. SPRINT FOR SOLDIERS 5K Plan Ahead Events of Albany & Saratoga is organizing the First Annual Sprint For Soldiers 5K to be held on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at Lions Park in Niskayuna.

This event will raise money to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

The morning begins at 8 am with Day-of Registration and a Trade Show of local businesses supporting the Wounded Warrior Project. The race start time is 9 am. There will also be raffles to enter to win, food and music to enjoy. Runner Awards will start at 10:30 am and Raffles and Exhibitor Booths will close down at the completion of awards.

Learn-to-Swim is a statewide program that will teach more than 1000 children across the state to swim for free this summer season. The program, for children age 5 years through 12 years, is made possible through a partnership between the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the American Red Cross, National Swimming Pool Foundation and the Northeast Spa and Pool Association.

Grafton Lakes State Park will hold two Learn-to-Swim sessions this summer. The first session will run from July 7th through July 18th while the second session will begin on July 21st and end on August 1st. The free swim classes will help children become comfortable in an open water environment and will provide basic swimming and water safety techniques.

AMERICAN RED CROSS SEEKS MORE BLOOD DONATIONS THIS SUMMER The American Red Cross encourages blood donors to help prevent a summer shortage by rolling up a sleeve to give. Donors of all blood types are urged to schedule an appointment now, especially those with types O negative, B negative and A negative.

Type O negative is universal and can likely be transfused to anyone who needs blood. Types A negative and B negative can be transfused to patients with either Rh positive or negative blood. These blood types are the most in demand and the first to run out if there is a shortage.

To encourage more people to make time to donate blood before and after Independence Day, all presenting blood donors from June 30 through July 7 will receive a commemorative Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last.

The Red Cross must collect 15,000 blood donations every day to meet the needs of patients at 2,700 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country. To learn more and make an appointment to donate blood and help save lives, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
