ATTENTION ALL DOG OWNERS IN THE TOWN OF SCHODACK

Debra L. Curtis, the Schodack Town Clerk, wishes to remind residents that under New York State law, all dogs are required to be licensed by four months of age.

Before a license can be issued or renewed, current proof of rabies vaccination must be provided. Rabies is a contagious and serious disease spread from animals to people so having them vaccinated helps to protect not only your dog, but you, and your family.

To obtain a new license, a copy of the current Rabies Certificate (must be valid for more than 30 days prior to licensing) and proof that the animal has been altered must be provided. The cost for a spayed/neutered dog is $7.00 and an unspayed/unneutered dog is $15.00. One tag is issued for the lifetime of the license; however, in the event of loss, can be replaced at a cost of $3.00. A renewal letter will be sent, on a yearly basis, based upon the anniversary of the license.

If you have a dog that is of age and unlicensed, you are in violation of State and Town statutes. Please be aware that if the Town conducts a dog enumeration, not only will you have to pay the licensing fee, but you will also have to pay an additional fee for having an unlicensed dog. If you have any questions please visit the Schodack Town Clerk’s office, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or please call 518-477-7590.

ANGEL GOWNS OF THE CAPITAL REGION

This is a volunteer group helping parents who have suffered the loss of a baby by providing burial gowns for their precious ones. Our “angel gowns” are made from donated wedding gowns, first communion dresses and other donated fabric and are transformed into “angel gowns” by our special seamstresses. We offer these gowns for babies weighing under one pound up to (approximately)

13 pounds.

WHAT WE NEED: Seamstresses – those willing to volunteer a few hours of their time to create an “Angel Gown” from a wedding gown. Simple patterns, instruction and support will be provided. The Town of North Greenbush and the Youth Makes a Difference Committee are excited to announce that one of our summertime favorites is back! Our second annual "Free Night at the Movies" series is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, July 21st, when we will be showing Disney's live action fairytale, “Cinderella”.

Our August selection will be Disney's live action version of "The Jungle Book" and it will be shown on Saturday, August 25th. Both movies will begin around dusk behind Town Hall on Main Avenue and light refreshments will be provided

Five Hudson Valley Community College students were recently recognized with one of the highest honors bestowed on a student in the State University of New York system, the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. Recipients include: Inesa Pengu of Troy, an Engineering Science major. Inesa has been awarded the Kenneth M. Barber Award for Excellence in Experimental Physics and the USA Today Phi Theta Kappa All New York Academic Award and was named to the Hudson Valley Community College President's List during each of her semesters at Hudson Valley. She serves as a peer tutor at the college and is also a member of the Engineering Club.

Skylar Blankenship of Rensselaer, a Liberal Arts Honors major.

As a member of the Liberal Arts HonorScholar program at the college, Skylar has maintained a GPA of above 3.5 since Fall 2017 while engaged in a range of extracurricular activities.

Skylar is the founder and current president of Hudson Valley's American Sign Language Club and has also served as the club's vice president. She also serves as a peer tutor and as a tour guide at Hudson Valley, and was elected treasurer of tour guides from Fall 2017 through Spring 2018. She has served as a student representative at the college's HonorScholar Informational Evening for two years.

Schools are out, and summer is here. Congratulations to all of the high school graduates. Each graduate has reached the first of many milestones in their lives. There is a world of opportunity available to each of them, and we are hopeful that their futures are bright, and full of happiness and success.

Our goals are to provide strong communities with opportunities for growth so that our graduates are able to stay in the area and advance their careers. That is why we are excited for the opportunity to attract the new Wadsworth Center to East Greenbush. Rensselaer County is already a hub for many technology-based companies, several are located at the University at Albany Health Science Campus.

The work of our Legislature enabled Regeneron Pharmaceuticals to expand and hire hundreds of local residents to work at their location in this Campus. That is why this month; we adopted a resolution urging the NYS Department of Health to choose East Greenbush as the home of the new Wadsworth Center. Vice Chair Kelly Hoffman and Legislator Tom Grant joined other elected officials and toured the Health Science Campus to see firsthand the incredible work being done there already. We are ready to take the necessary steps to bring the Wadsworth Center to Rensselaer County because it makes sense for them to co-locate with companies they already work with.

Vice Chair Kelly Hoffman and Legislator Tom Grant participated in the 11th Annual Run for Help- 5k Race/Walk Against Domestic Violence and attended the informational meeting for the Route 4 Traffic and Pedestrian Improvement Project in North Greenbush. Kelly Hoffman took part in the Hospice Walk, and Tom Grant ran the Sean Strong 5k.

We were pleased to welcome Wynantskill resident Jay Wilson as the acting Director of the Bureau of Public Safety. Jay has decades of experience in emergency services and will be an asset as we work to improve our services.

Cadet Macauley J Hoyt graduated from the U.S. Military Academy on May 26th. Hoyt graduated from Averill Park High School in 2014. While at West Point, Mac concentrated his studies in Systems Engineering. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He is in the Corps of Engineers and will report to Louisiana to be part of the 10th Mountain Division as his first assignment.

The tournaments are sponsored by Make The Right Move, the capital region’s chapter of The Right Move, dedicated to free chess tournaments for youth. Adult competition is also encouraged. Sandeep and Sreenivas Alampalli served as the Tournament Directors in these nationally certified chess tournaments.

The mission of EGCC is to promote an educational chess community for people of all ages. The group meets on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 in the Sunshine Day Care building at 14 Hayes Rd in East Greenbush. EGCC provides various chess activities that include weekly classes, monthly tournaments and individual coaching. The club is open to people of all ages and everything is free. Letter to the Editor: With the Democratic primary for Congress accomplished and its candidate decided, we turn our attention to November and incumbent Republican John Faso.

Born and raised in Massapequa (Oyster Bay, Nassau County, Long Island), John Faso graduated in 1970 from Archbishop Molloy HS in Queens (same school as Andrew Cuomo), before earning a bachelor’s from SUNY Brockport (1974) and law degree from Georgetown (1979). After several years in Washington, he moved to the Hudson Valley, in 1986 running successfully for the State Assembly replacing the retiring Larry Lane. Faso managed Pierre Rinfret’s unsuccessful run for NY governor in 1990 (losing to Mario Cuomo). In both 1994 and 1998 he sought – unsuccessfully -- the GOP nomination for State Comptroller and was named Assembly Minority Leader in 1999. In 2002, he finally did receive the Republican nod for State Comptroller – thus vacating his Assembly seat -- but lost in the general election. In four years as Assembly Minority Leader, Faso sponsored a total of eight bills that eventually became law, all special legislation (such as raising the speed limit on the Berkshire Spur or changing the voting date for the Coxsackie library district’s elections), nothing significant. Barred by law for two years from lobbying in New York, Faso became a Washington-based lobbyist for Manatt, Phelps and Philips in 2002. He was a registered federal lobbyist from 2003 to 2013 and at the state level from 2007 to 2015, working out of Manatt’s Washington, New York City, and Albany offices. Over that time, its clients included Wall St banks and investment firms, insurance companies, pharmaceutical corporations, and health care concerns. Faso’s also represented both the Constitution and Tennessee Gas pipelines in New York. He ran for Governor in 2006 (losing to Eliot Spitzer) and was elected to Congress in 2016. Swamp dweller? For the fourth quarter of 2017/18, the students selected to receive this recognition are: Freshman – Jenna Hoffman, Sophomore – Emily Smith, Junior – Rhonda McBride Senior – Tori Whimple.

Jenna, daughter of Mr. Mark and Jackie Hoffman, was nominated for being a well-rounded, enthusiastic person. Here at Maple Hill she is a member of Key Club, Student Council, softball, basketball and volleyball teams. Jenna is also Class President. Outside of school Jenna plays AAU Basketball along with being a member of Girl Scouts. Jenna is receiving a Silver Award in June for making food bags for students over the summer.

Jenna would like to play basketball in college and coach. She thinks she would like to be a guidance counselor being she likes to help people.

Emily, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Smith, was nominated for being a kind, courteous and responsible student. Here at Maple Hill she is a member of Key Club, GSA, SADD, softball and volleyball teams. Outside of school she is a member of the Girl Scouts and she babysits her little cousin. Emily is looking to do her undergrad at SUNY Oneonta and would like to be an Occupational Therapist, Rhonda, daughter of Mr. Shawn and April McBride, was nominated for working hard in and outside of the classroom. Here at Maple Hill she attends the VoTech program for Criminal Justice. Outside of school she volunteers with the Troy Police Department as a cadet along with working after school every day.

Rhonda is planning on going to college and would like to go to UAlbany for Criminal Justice and/or Psychology. Rhonda would like to be a Police Officer.

Victoria, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Whimple, was nominated for being a mature young woman who is serious about her academic studies. Here at Maple Hill she is a member of Student Council, SADD, GSA, International Club and is the Class Secretary. She also plays soccer, indoor and outdoor track. Outside of school Tori is a member of Girl Scouts, dances and she collected apple sauce for the Equinox. Tori is going to SUNY Plattsburgh for a Nursing degree and will be on the indoor and outdoor track teams.

SMART DEVELOPMENT IN SCHODACK?

Letter to the Editor: We recently learned that Amazon wants to occupy over one million square feet of a fulfillment center in Schodack off Route 9. Trucks would come or go from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. There could be between 15 and 30 truck trips per hour during daytime hours. Thirty tractor trailers per hour and approximately 400 employee vehicles per work shift.

David Harris, before being elected as town supervisor told residents, “…I don’t want a million square foot warehouse or projects like that. That’s not smart.” Now he says that an Amazon facility of that size would be good for the town and its businesses as well as the local school districts.

Although there are claims of tax benefits to residents, we are still waiting to learn the specifics. Those who think the Schodack School District will benefit probably do not realize that the area is within the East Greenbush School District.

Residents are interested in preserving the rural character of the Town and don’t want to see it become “warehouse row” which others seem determined to create. We love our homes and our neighborhood. Why should we be driven out? This proposed mega-warehouse is NOT smart development and does not belong in an area zoned for “residential and light commercial use”. This is someone’s idea of putting Schodack on the map for their own political aspirations and not everyone is jumping on the bandwagon.

June has been a busy month. A standing room only crowd gathered at the Defreestville Fire Department to learn about long-awaited traffic safety and pedestrian improvements to Route 4. I have spoken with many town residents concerned about increasing traffic congestion and dangerous driving conditions on Route 4. The town is attempting to improve traffic flow and reduce collisions on the nearly 3-mile stretch extending from the intersection of Routes 4 and 43 to the Troy border. Representatives from the engineering firm Creighton Manning described the project which is supposed to begin in 2019 and will focus on “hot spots”. Highlights will include the construction of a turn lane from Valley View to Winter Street, the addition of sidewalks and a possible roundabout at the Williams Road/Glenmore Road intersection. Many residents in attendance from the Teliska neighborhood voiced concerns about unsafe driving conditions on Bloomingrove Drive. Town officials at the meeting expressed hopes that the Route 4 improvements will shift traffic from Bloomingrove to Route 4. The project is anticipated to cost nearly $10 million which will come from federal and local funding sources. Information on this project can be found at https://route4corridorng.com/ page/. Three new police officers were sworn in at the June town board meeting. Congratulations to Zachary Bourdeau who joins us from the Menands police department, and new officers Kirk Catlin and Matthew Peasley. All three new officers live in town. I spent an eventful evening on a ride along with Sergeant Deeb getting a first-hand look at a “typical” shift for a North Greenbush police officer. It was quite an adventure and I thank Chief Keevern and Sergeant Deeb for allowing me this eye-opening experience.

June brings graduations. I presented a citizenship award to Vincent Corina, a graduating 6th grader at St. Judes and a Social Studies Award to Nick DeGiorgio, a graduating 8th grader at Gardner Dickinson. The next town board meeting will be July 12th at 7pm.

Letter to the Editor: To Lee King, GREETINGS: On behalf of Poestenkill residents sick and tired of the seemingly endless stream of lies, deceits, deceptions and falsehoods of Poestenkill Supervisor Dominic Jacangelo, who styles himself the dictator of Poestenkill, as if Poestenkill were some third-world banana republic, I would like to commend you for having the courage to step up to the plate in the Advertiser to ask the hard questions concerning my absence in Poestenkill Town Hall, where I am in fact quite unwelcome per Supervisor Jacangelo, who has twice retaliated against me in the most craven and cowardly manner for daring to speak out and question his actions.

So that you better understand, I am unwelcome in Town Hall because in 1993, I dared to challenge in court what Assistant Attorney General Kathleen Liston Morrison was forced to admit under oath in Albany County Supreme Court in Matter of Paul Plante v.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Albany County Index No. 4840-93, was intentional criminal activity by the NYSDEC in connection with the issuance of fraudulent instruments in the form of DEC permits, one of which was for the PDD Transfer Station, which fraudulent instruments were then laundered through the Town of Poestenkill in a further series of criminal actions known as the “Mother of All Back-Room Deals,” which back-room deals are being defended by Supervisor Jacangelo today, which makes me his enemy, unwelcome in Town Hall today.

Supervisor Jacangelo has been free to defend those criminal actions of the DEC and past Poestenkill administrations thanks to political cover and back-up from now-disgraced NYS Attorney General Eric T. “Teddy” Schneiderman, the lawyer for NYSDEC, who has me barred from further access to the courts, effectively silencing my voice in Poestenkill.

German, the Adjutant General, announces the recent reenlistment of members of the State National Guard in recognition of their continuing commitment to serve community, state and nation as part of the Army National Guard. RANERI RECEIVES CHANCELLOR’S AWARD

Rosanne Raneri, an associate professor in Hudson Valley Community College’s Fine Arts, Theatre Arts and Digital Media Department, received the 2018 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, one of the highest honors the state university system bestows. Raneri has been with the college since 1992. She teaches courses in the college’s Theatre Arts associate degree program and was recognized for nurturing and supporting students and putting on quality productions.

The Schodack Town Board, in an effort to help inform residents of its activities, furnishes for them this report for the month of May 2018.

Our Summer concert series, “Music in the Park”, is under way.

Concerts take place every Tuesday at 6 p.m. in our Town Park and run through July 3rd. Should a cancellation arise due to weather, rain dates would be the following Wednesday.

Concerts are family friendly and free of charge. The Town Board would like to invite and encourage residents to come out and enjoy our beautiful park and some wonderful music.

As events like “Music in the Park” demonstrate, our Town Park provides a wonderful space for our residents to gather in and enjoy the great outdoors with family and friends. In an effort to improve upon and expand this, the Town Board is currently exploring the possibility of adding a playground to our Park.

Discussions have been held and proposals have been submitted by several companies and the Town Board is reviewing these.

In the coming months, we’re hopeful a selection can be made, and work can begin on adding this exciting addition to our Park.

After a prolonged winter and delayed spring, our Highway Crew is in full swing doing their summer road maintenance. At the May 10th Town Board meeting, the 2018 Road Program proposed by Highway Superintendent Holmes was adopted.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County will hold its annual “Rensselaer County Garden Tour” on Thursday, July 12, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. This drive-it-yourself tour will feature more than ten gardens in East Greenbush and nearby Rensselaer areas. This year’s gardens include shade and sun perennial gardens, raised bed vegetables, condominium and townhouse gardens, poolside gardens, arbors and pathways, backyard orchards and fruit plants. Participants will enjoy seeing the gardens and learning from their owners and will take home dozens of inspirational ideas.

FREE SUMMER ATHLETICS PROGRAM

Columbia Athletics is offering a free training program this summer for all students and athletes entering 7th to 12th grade. The training will focus on weightlifting, agility and mobilization and be instructed by Columbia coaches. A two week “Ringer” Tournament was held at Winding Brook on June 6th and 13th, for the Women's Golf Association at Winding Brook. Lynn Keil captured first place with a net 69.

Eighty-four SUNY Potsdam student-athletes, including nine two-sport athletes, have earned a spot on the State University of New York Athletic Conference's Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. The honor roll recognizes athletes with a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average for the entire 2017-18 academic year. It takes fortitude, courage to see our mistakes and to learn from them.

These traits are not only important to teamwork but also to be a good Christian. Through teambuilding exercises, tennis, baseball/softball, soccer and water Olympics, as well as prayer and scripture, children will learn the importance of being a part of a team, most especially God’s team!!

WE NEED EMT’S AND WILL TRAIN YOU

The Sand Lake Ambulance has been in existence for nearly 60 years. We have operated as primarily a volunteer organization for most of that time. Due to declines in the number of new volunteers, we have started to fill out some shifts with paid employees. But we keep our costs down by filling out many shifts with volunteer EMT’s and drivers.

If you have ever been interested in becoming certified to provide emergency care to friends, family, neighbors, or others, we will pay for that training. The course is 4 months long and will require some commitment of time and work.

Also, we will ask you to ride as a member for at least 2 years with Sand Lake Ambulance for training you. We also train ambulance drivers in EVOC training.

We generally work on keeping our skills up with regular training and try to keep it both educational and enjoyable. As an active member of the ambulance, you’ll be working calls and helping your community. You need to be in fairly decent physical health and able to lift 50 pounds fairly easily; you need to be okay with working with trauma patients or sick community members, and you need to be willing to get up at all hours to do it.

The First Reformed Church in Wynantskill will be holding a Cooking and Creating for a Cause Summer Camp again this summer. This camp is for boys and girls entering grades 2-8 who would like to create food and crafts to be donated to local charities. The camp will be held the week of July 16-20 for children entering grades 2-4 and August 6-10 for children entering grades 5-8. The camp hours are from 9 am until 12 pm and will be held at the Church on the corner of Main Ave. and Church St. in Wynantskill. The cost of the camp is $15.00 per week per child.
