SLCA PRESENTS “LOW AND LONESOME” IN CONCERT

Sand Lake Center for the Arts presents “Low and Lonesome” on Saturday, June 1, at 8 pm. Rock, Jazz, Country have all drawn from the wellspring of the Blues. Phil Drum and Rob Adkins, as Low ‘n Lonesome, host a night tracing the history of Blues music from the earliest recordings of the 1920’s to the birth of electric Blues and Rock in the 1950’s. With special guests Holly and Evan, and Sonny Speed and the Resonators, the music will sample the rural and urban styles of such Blues greats as Robert Johnson, Memphis Minnie, and Muddy Waters, narration by Ray Giguere, Blues aficionado and player.

Tickets are $16, under 18 $10, and reservations can be made at 518-674-2007 or www.slca-ctp.org. The SLCA is located at 2880 NY 43, Averill Park, NY. There is plenty of free parking, and the center is handicapped accessible.

The Spinney at Pond View is a new “55 & Better” cottage rental community, located off Exit 10 of I-90, in the Town of Schodack.

It is distinct in concept from other senior communities because it allows residents to downsize and simplify living, without giving up independence and privacy. Each cottage has its own garage, private entry with front porch and own back deck.

The Spinney at Pond View thrives on a sense of community among its residents who organize and attend regular activity events at the Welcome Center.

Two Grand Openings are also building this sense of community.

The first one was the Grand Opening of the RISOTTO Cafe at The Spinney. Located on the second floor of the Pond View Arts Building, the Cafe is open to Spinney residents, commercial tenants at 2500 Pond View, and the community at large. It is the brain-child of David Camacho and Joe Sandor, owners of RISOTTO Restaurant, at 360 Northern Boulevard, across from Albany Memorial Hospital. Capital Region Living Magazine recently voted RISOTTO Restaurant “Best Mediterranean” food in our area. Risotto Cafe serves breakfast and lunch, Monday thru Friday, from 8 am to 2 pm and offers a variety of soups, salads and sandwiches. Catering for office functions or private parties is also available.

The second Grand Opening will take place on Saturday, June 1st. The Pond View Farmers’ Market will be open every Saturday until September 28th, from 9 am to 1 pm, in the Pond View parking lot. It will promote healthy living for the Spinney residents and neighbors who will be able to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables and will also promote a greater sense of community spirit.

Grand Opening on June 1st will feature the music of a prominent Banjo Trio. Seasoned musicians Bob Altschuler, Tom Thorpe and Steve Karpinski will perform blue grass, country rock and blues from 10 am to 11 am. The public is invited to enjoy the music, fun, food and goods for sale. Among the local vendors are Bud’s Florist, Swartz Dairy and Freddi’s Rockin’Hummus, all from Castleton, Jenn’s Sweet Adventures from Troy, Mort’s Maple from Averill Park, and many more.

EAST GREENBUSH HUB DESERVES “COMPLETE STREETS” Letter to the Editor: With the warm weather upon us, walkers, cyclists and joggers will join drivers on the roads around Rensselaer County. Some communities are doing more to allow for road sharing and safe passage for these exercisers by adopting a Complete Street policy.

Complete Streets is a policy that accommodates the needs of all road users: walkers, cyclists, the elderly, the disabled, busses, and cars. Currently, the “built environment” of the intersection of Luther Road (County Road 151) and Michael Road (East Greenbush), like countless others around America is designed with only the speed and safe maneuverability of cars in mind. It should be built to show that we care equally about the health and safety of citizens who are on foot or bicycles.

The intersection between the Community Library, YMCA and Columbia High School deserves the attention and collaboration of the town, county and community based organizations to address the lack of shared-use supports for walkers and cyclists. Pedestrian injuries have already occurred at this intersection and future injuries can easily be prevented if the right walking and bike lanes are painted onto the streets during the next scheduled repaving/restriping event.

Take a careful look at the new East Greenbush round-about.

There are sidewalks surrounding the structure because New York State has adopted a Complete Street policy. Why don’t the sidewalks connect to anything? Without local Complete Streets policies, the local roads don’t have to be planned with pedestrian safety in mind. Won’t it be expensive to make changes to the road? A walk audit is a community event which allows citizens to learn from planners and public officials about the relatively minor design changes that could “complete” the street from the roundabout to Columbia High School. Let’s help our community walk more and more safely. POESTENKILL ANNUAL RABIES CLINIC The Rensselaer County Health Dept. in connection with the Town of Poestenkill will be holding their annual RABIES CLINIC on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at the Sullivan Jones Post Pavilion located on Veterans Street.

Cats will be vaccinated from 5 p.m. thru 6 p.m. and they must be in carriers. Dogs will be vaccinated from 6 p.m. thru 7 p.m. and must be leashed. A record of rabies inoculation is requested in order to obtain a 3 yr. booster. A donation is requested to help defray the cost of the clinic.

SUNY NEW PALTZ CELEBRATES UNDERGRADUATE COMMENCEMENT The State University of New York at New Paltz held the May 2013 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 19, at 10 a.m. on the Old Main Quadrangle. This year, there are 2,059 undergraduate degrees being conferred.

There will be more than 1,400 undergraduate candidates participating in the ceremony and celebrating their achievements in the presence of their family and friends.

The ceremony recognized two cohorts of students: August and December 2012 and May and August 2013 candidates.

The following local residents are among more than 1,400 students to participate in the May 2013 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony: Megan Porpeglia, a resident of Castleton, NY will receive a BFA in Painting. Simeon Youngmann, a resident of Hoosick Falls, NY will receive a BFA in Painting. Charlotte Cray, a resident of Nassau, NY will receive a BA in Psychology. The Averill Park Teachers would like to invite the Averill Park School District community to join us at the Rally for Public Education on June 8, 2013 at the Capitol in Albany. We are marching on Albany to insist that New York State fairly fund our school district to avoid further devastating cuts to your child’s educational programs. Over the last few years, our students have lost many important classes, programs, services, and teachers. It is time to stand up and say we will not tolerate any more cuts to our school district.

On April 23rd, the Averill Park Board of Education adopted a resolution against high stakes testing. We live in an unprecedented time of testing. Our students in grades 3-8 just finished two weeks of intense NYSED standardized testing where the “average” student tested for over 450 minutes and we will be testing again within a week or two according to testing regulations set forth by the state education department.

The Rally for Public Education will give us a collective voice to tell NYSED that students need to spend more time at school learning and less time taking standardized tests AND that we stand united against standardized tests for grades K-2.

We would truly appreciate community support of this Rally for Public Education on 6-8-13. Educators, students, families, administrators, and Board of Education members across New York State will be in Albany to use one collective voice to tell New York State that our students are too important to not get public education decisions right. MURDER MYSTERY DINNER THEATER “MURDER IN POESTENKILL” The Poestenkill Christian Church will host a Murder Mystery Dinner Theater on Saturday, June 22. “Murder in Poestenkill” written by Ron LeVan and Kathryn Capalbo will be performed by the Highlight Acting Troupe. Come and help solve the mystery of who murdered Horace Serley, the bank president.

You can ask questions of the suspects and help the detectives discover who the murderer is. The dinner will be an Italian Buffet, and the cost is $15 for the dinner and show. COUNTY HONORS ANTHONY J. CYBULSKI, WWII NAVY VETERAN

A host of family members, friends and government officials including Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. The late Anthony J. Cybulski, who served aboard the USS LCIR 651 during the Invasion of Iwo Jima, was recently recognized

by Rensselaer County’s Honor-A-Deceased Veteran Committee and County.

Cybulski entered the United States Navy in June, 1943, shortly after the completion of his junior year of High School. It was during the initial stages of the Invasion of Iwo Jima when Cybulski, during an assault on the northern portion of the Island, found himself in the position of saving his vessel and the lives of fellow sailors when a rocket misfired, landing in a nearby gun tub. Aware of the danger, Cybulski successfully recovered the armed and misfired rocket from its location and hurled the round overboard without incident.

For his honorable service to our nation, Cybulski was authorized to receive the Naval Achievement Medal, the Navy Commendation Ribbon with Bronze Valor Device, the EuropeanAfrican-Middle Eastern Medal with Bronze Arrowhead Device, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with Two Bronze Service Stars, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Occupation Medal with Asia Bar, the American Campaign Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, the Philippine Independence Medal, and, the Honorable Service Lapel Button/ Ruptured Duck .

TROOP 41 E.G. WELCOMES 2 SCOUTS TO THE RANK OF EAGLE SCOUT

THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT AND YOUR BUSINESS Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) is providing educational assistance to small businesses regarding the federal healthcare law, known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA). CCE is one of 34 small business serving organizations that form part of the Small Business Assistance Program, a program administered by the Community Service Society of New York.

The federal health care law will soon change the way that businesses and employees obtain their health insurance. The business community needs to know about these upcoming changes to make informed decisions. Many small employers, for example, don’t know that they may be eligible for premium tax credits if they offer health coverage to their employees.

These credits have been available since 2010 and the credit will increase in 2014.

Small businesses, sole proprietors, and individuals also need to know about New York’s Health Benefit Exchange. The Exchange will be an online marketplace where individuals and small businesses will be able to shop for affordable health insurance starting October 1, 2013. The objective of the Exchange is to help insure the 2.8 million New Yorkers who are currently uninsured.

Cornell Cooperative Extension is conducting free community presentations and one-on-one educational sessions to help small businesses navigate healthcare reform. CCE can help answer some of the following questions: What are my rights and responsibilities under the ACA? Do I have to offer health insurance to my employees?

Who can I talk to if I need help finding insurance?

What is the Individual Exchange?

What is the Small Business Health Options (SHOP) Exchange?

NAVY FIREMAN SCIARRINO COMPLETES BASIC TRAINING Navy Fireman Michael J. Sciarrino, son of Catherine B. and Jamie W. Sciarrino of Rensselaer, N. Y., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Sciarrino completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.

An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations”. This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.

Its distinctly ‘’Navy’’ flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.

Sciarrino is a 2006 graduate of Columbia High School of East Greenbush, N. Y.

STATE APPROVES FUNDING FOR HISTORIC BURIAL GROUND The State has approved the application of the Town of Nassau for $29,200 in funds to restore the historic Brainard Rural Cemetery.

This cemetery is estimated to contain 300 burials, including early residents and veterans of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Supervisor Fleming and the Town Board have expressed their gratitude to members of the community and the State for providing funds to restore this piece of history.

The state funds will pay for dead tree removal, a survey of the property to determine if there is additional space for burials, new fencing and gates, and most importantly, complete restoration and repair of the dangerous and damaged monuments in the cemetery.

Residents have also contributed a large percentage of the funds necessary to erect a historical marker at the site with the remainder of the provided by Mooney Funeral Home. ~ Submitted by, David Fleming

28 EMERGENCY RESPONSES FOR DFD DeFreestville Fire Department volunteers answered 28 emergency alarms in April, according to Fire Chief Raymond Swart, and spent 128 total fire fighter hours at alarms. For the first four months of the year, DFD has answered 132 alarms and spent more than 781 fire fighter hours at those alarms.

The Chief reported that the April emergencies included four rescue or motor vehicle accidents, two emergency medical service alarms in cooperation with the North Greenbush Ambulance Association, a grass fire and a rubbish fire. There were also two hazardous condition calls, a carbon monoxide detector response and a service call. The Department responded to nine false alarms with good intent, five unintentional false alarms, and two system malfunctions.

The DeFreestville Fire Department in North Greenbush Fire District # 1 is a volunteer organization established in 1945 that provides emergency services 24 hours a day. The fire department always needs and welcomes new members and community support. DFD’s non-emergency number is 2863612. All emergencies in Rensselaer County should be reported by dialing 911. SUNY NEW PALTZ CELEBRATES GRADUATE COMMENCEMENT The State University of New York at New Paltz held the May 2013 Graduate Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 17, at 6 p.m. on the Old Main Quadrangle. Greetings and best wishes to everyone in the City of Rensselaer.

As Rensselaer’s representative to the County Legislature, I am happy to report to you on the actions taken by the Rensselaer County Legislature at our May 14, 2013 legislative meeting.

The Rensselaer Area Senior Center has been an important part of life in Rensselaer. I sponsored a resolution recognizing the 43rd anniversary of the Rensselaer Senior Center. Two years ago, funding problems nearly caused the senior center to be closed. I was able to join with other legislators and ensure enough funding to keep the center open.

It is my hope the center, directed by Gloria Fonda, will see many more anniversaries and many, many more seniors pass through the center doors for a meal, exercise and activity.

The Legislature approved the distribution of revenues from the filing of mortgages from October 2012 through March 2013.

Under the resolution, Rensselaer will receive $66,965.

I was also proud to welcome the Rensselaer Rams Boys fifth and sixth grade CYO basketball team upon a championship season. Congratulations to head coach Mike Teator, and players Stephen Sousis, Motasam Alshami, Nate Breedon, Gabe Dominowski, Daytona Cross, Eli Foust, Julius Johnson, Jayden Seals, Brandon Sion, Joseph Sweet, Kieran Teator and Jonathan Wellington.

Legislators also approved a resolution commending the Rensselaer Pee Wee Cheerleaders for a championship season.

The squad placed second in competitions in Trenton and Syracuse. Congratulations to head coach Pamela Harwood, assistant coaches Amber Arduini and Tiffani Nye, and cheerleaders Gianna Harwood, Madison Berhaupt, Arianna Vogel, Jada Boniface, Amber Foust, Hayley Lizotte, Shanida Williams, Mackenzie Brown, Carizma Carpenter, Alexandria Johnsen and Areonna Knowlton.

Youth sports are in full swing in Rensselaer. I was happy to see the Little League and softball leagues preparing for the 2013 season. I also presented a sponsorship check for $500 from the Mink-Claxton Fire House to support the Upstate Rebels 14 and under travel team. The team helps bridge the gap between Little League and scholastic teams, as Rensselaer does not have its own Babe Ruth league. Motorists are reminded to drive carefully near ball fields during the season.

Every year, Union College celebrates its Undergraduate Research program by inviting students to present their creative and scholarly achievements. This year, over 450 students participated in the festivities that spanned all of the College’s academic disciplines.

The symposium is named for one of the College’s most renowned faculty members, Charles Proteus Steinmetz, who taught electrical engineering and applied physics. As a chief engineer for the General Electric Company, he was widely regarded as America’s leading electrical engineer.

UNCLE SAM COMMUNITY DAY at RCHS Troy is full of Uncle Sam pride. From the 30 new statues that were unveiled in April, to a day celebrating this hometown hero. The Rensselaer County Historical Society is hosting an Uncle Sam Community Day on Saturday, June 8th, which will honor Samuel Wilson, the historic man behind our national icon.

If you want to learn more about Mr. Wilson, or haven’t seen the statues yet, this will be a great day to enjoy Troy.

We can’t get enough of our Uncle Sam, so RCHS is having a full day of events honoring Samuel Wilson and his legacy. If you haven’t seen the statues, come down to Troy for a day of art and history.

AVERILL PARK CSD BUDGET VOTE

As legislative representatives of District 4, including the towns of Schodack, Nassau and Sand Lake, we are happy to provide residents with an update on actions taken at the May 14, 2013 legislative meeting.

The Legislature also approved the distribution of revenues from the filing of mortgages with the County Clerk’s office from October 2012 through March 2013. The funds are used to maintain local services and support operations on the town and village levels. Under the resolution, Schodack will receive $226,025, Sand Lake $110,089, Nassau $46,398, the Village of Nassau $5,497, Village of East Nassau $3,117 and Village of Castleton $9,545.

Legislator Alex Shannon helped lead a bi-partisan effort to lower costs in the legislative operations by utilizing electronic tablets to reduce paper, printing and copying costs. Alex joined with other legislators in a bi-partisan effort that resulted in a $15,000 reduction in costs during 2012. Based on that success, we passed a resolution urging other county departments to consider utilizing the electronic tablets to reduce paper costs.

Legislators are also beginning a review of a proposal from the County Executive to relocate Social Services, Probation and Youth offices to Flanigan Square in Troy. The offices are currently located in downtown Troy in the Broadway area, and approximately 200 workers would be affected. Betsy Stinner was also a resident of the Village of Castleton, married to the late Schodack Councilman Ken Stinner, who had worked as a nurse and developed a cross-stitch business.

Martin also had the honor of addressing the graduating class at Hudson Valley Community College for the 59th commencement exercise for the college. Rensselaer County is a sponsor of Hudson Valley and is proud to support the college and wish the graduates and their families all the best. “IT’S AS CLEAR AS CAN BE” On Sunday, June 2, 2013, the Second Sunday after Pentecost, the Nassau and Stuyvesant Reformed Churches will focus in worship, on the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians 1:1-12.

There, Paul claims he was sent not by human design nor from human authorities; rather by a divine source; and that his message was a gift of God in Christ, nothing less than a miracle.

In the sermon titled, “It’s As Clear As Can Be,” the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will speak to the Gospel of Christ Jesus as the heart of our faith. Join us and come to more fully understand why you can neither add to or take from God’s grace in Jesus Christ.

In a segment of its worship on June 2, the Nassau Reformed Church will witness Sunday School Achievement Program. The boys and girls will present a short drama based on the song, “This Little Light of Mine,” and receive their Medals of Achievement in Christian Education. Those being recognized will include: Gavin Sanford, Lila Meisner, Lauren and Kyle Sanford, First year; Jack and McKenna Kelly, Matthew Murdock, Morgan and Zachary Sanford, Second Year; Meagan Murdock, Six years; Alexis Bulan, Seven years; Christian and Paige Zownir, Eight years; and Morgan Pelletier, Nine Years.

Carol Sanford, Supervisor and teacher, and Donna Ortgies and Becky Kelley, teachers, will be acknowledged for their leadership in the Sunday School Program. The Sunday School boys and girls, and staff will host the Annual Sunday School Picnic following worship. The Nassau Reformed Worships at 11 a.m. in its chapel at 43 Church Street, Route 20 in the village of Nassau. The Stuyvesant Reformed Church worships, 9 a.m. in its sanctuary at the corner of Church Street and Route 9J in the hamlet of Stuyvesant.

On May 21, Averill Park Central School District voters approved the district’s proposed budget for the 2013-14 school year with 1,463 voting “yes” and 716 voting “no.” The $53.49 million budget decreases spending for a fourth consecutive year and is $30,253 less than the current year’s budget. Under the approved budget, the district’s tax levy will increase 2.99 percent, which is at the district’s maximum allowable tax levy limit as calculated under the state’s tax levy cap formula.

District residents also approved a proposition to allow the district to spend $12.9 million on a capital project by a vote of 1,287 to 713.

Three candidates ran for three seats on the Board of Education.

Elected are: Shawn Morgan, 1,359 votes, Stuart Nippes, 1,171 votes, and Peter Schaefer, 1,423 votes. Each will serve a threeyear term beginning July 1. FRIENDS OF OAKWOOD CEMETERY TO HOLD DEDICATION CEREMONY On June 8th, at 10 AM there will be a dedication ceremony by the Friends of Oakwood Cemetery in conjunction with the Troy Cemetery Association of a sign to acknowledge 164 men, women and children who were re-interred in Oakwood Cemetery in 1875 from the Third Street Burial Ground in Troy to make way for a new City Hall. No stones mark this spot since they were probably broken in the removal.

The Third Street Burial Ground was located on the southeast corner of State Street, adjacent to the First Particular Baptist Church, the church of Uncle Sam Wilson. The burial ground was originally donated to the city by Jacob Vanderheyden in 1796.

The corner is now known as Barker Park.

The Van Rensselaer Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will also be placing a wreath to honor three patriots who fought in the Revolution and who were re-interred at the site. They are Robert Woodworth, John Stoughton and Frederik Wolf. Robert Woodworth was a Captain and served in the militia under Col Van Rensselaer. John Stoughton was a private.

Frederick Wolf was born in France and was also a private and a trumpeteer. All are welcome.

As legislative representatives of District 4, including the towns of Schodack, Nassau and Sand Lake, we are happy to provide residents with an update on actions taken at the May 14, 2013 legislative meeting.

The Legislature also approved the distribution of revenues from the filing of mortgages with the County Clerk’s office from October 2012 through March 2013. The funds are used to maintain local services and support operations on the town and village levels. Under the resolution, Schodack will receive $226,025, Sand Lake $110,089, Nassau $46,398, the Village of Nassau $5,497, Village of East Nassau $3,117 and Village of Castleton $9,545.

Legislator Alex Shannon helped lead a bi-partisan effort to lower costs in the legislative operations by utilizing electronic tablets to reduce paper, printing and copying costs. Alex joined with other legislators in a bi-partisan effort that resulted in a $15,000 reduction in costs during 2012. Based on that success, we passed a resolution urging other county departments to consider utilizing the electronic tablets to reduce paper costs.

Legislators are also beginning a review of a proposal from the County Executive to relocate Social Services, Probation and Youth offices to Flanigan Square in Troy. The offices are currently located in downtown Troy in the Broadway area, and approximately 200 workers would be affected. B. TAYLOR HONORED for ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT at ST. OLAF COLLEGE

STEPHENTOWN FOOD PANTRY BENEFITS FROM POSTAL CARRIERS’ FOOD DRIVE The Stephentown Food Pantry has added to the shelves about 800 lb. of food collected in the recent Postal Service Letter Carriers’ Food Drive. Thanks go to the carriers and all the generous people of Stephentown and East Nassau who donated food. The collection from the East Nassau post office was split between the Stephentown Food Pantry and the pantry in Nassau.

This broad community support allows the Stephentown pantry to provide food for 8 to 14 families per week. The Stephentown Food Pantry offers short-term assistance to residents of Stephentown, New York, and Hancock, Massachusetts. The pantry is open every Saturday morning, weather permitting, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Stephentown Federated Church, Garfield Road (County Route 26). Appointments are not needed, but new clients should bring identification showing their street address, such as a current utility bill. As always, requests for help are confidential. This volunteer group has been serving the community since 1983. If you missed the food drive and wish to donate money to help stock the pantry, you may send checks to the Stephentown Food Pantry treasurer at P. O. Box 387, Stephentown, NY 12168.

The pantry is also a member of the Food Bank of NENY in Latham, New York. You may request any contribution you make to them be applied to the Stephentown Food Pantry account as part of their Adopt-A-Pantry program.

He is the son of John and Virgina Taylor.

Honors Day recognizes students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.60 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Letter to the Editor: A few days ago I voted NO on the EGCSD budget and propositions, and today I responded to a survey that the school district sent to me via email. The survey stated that my response would be anonymous, but I do not wish it to be, so I am going to share it with anyone and everyone who cares to know both sides of the issue.

I understand that speaking out against increasing taxes is unpopular with people who do not pay them, and will result in continuing backlash against my business like the boycott that the Schodack Democratic Committee initiated a couple years ago, as well as the passive boycotts that individuals institute simply because they hate what I say, not to mention the newly exposed risk of reprisal from left-wing zealots at all levels of government like the IRS, FEC and other departments of taxation and regulation. But knowing the truth is useless unless it is spoken. This is what we used to call ‘education’.

One of the questions in the survey was: “Did you understand the voting process for the capital project propositions?” My response was: “I understand that YES voters think it’s okay to spend other peoples’ money, including that of other YES voters from other districts. They are okay with picking each others’ pockets and borrowing money that their children will be responsible for repaying if they choose to stay in NY after they graduate.”

The next question was: “Why did you vote the way you did on the capital project propositions?” To which I responded: “I voted NO because there is no distinction in my mind between spending that is paid for with state tax revenue or local tax revenue.

Despite Dr Timbs’ assertion that Justin Beeber and Warren Buffet are now, with the passing of these spending plans, going to be paying their “fair share”, I know that to the contrary, home ownership has just been put that much more out of reach for New Yorkers of all income levels, including the next generation of taxpayers we are ‘educating’.

LOCAL STUDENTS NAMED TO KSC DEAN’S LIST Keene State College has released the Dean’s List for the spring semester 2013. Among the 1,321 students named to the Dean’s List are: Helena E Peters of Castleton, McKenzie Kiely Vaughan of Nassau, Jenna Lynn Cobb of Rensselaer, Elizabeth Marie Streeter of Troy, Mark Jefferson DiIanni of Valley Falls.

The Dean’s List designation is bestowed to those Keene State College undergraduates enrolled in a degree program who have completed a minimum of six credit hours in the semester, receiving no failing or incomplete grades.

A 3.5 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale is required to earn the Dean’s List honor.

STEPHENTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY BIRD PRESENTATION Author Barbara Chepaitis will give a talk, “Feathers of Hope: Berkshire Bird Paradise and the Human Connection With Birds,” at the Stephentown Historical Society meeting on Monday, June 3, at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be at the Stephentown Heritage Center on Garfield Road, Stephentown, New York. The Berkshire Bird Paradise Sanctuary in Grafton, New York, is a bird sanctuary for disabled and injured birds, which strives to give them a safe haven to live, thrive and rehabilitate as best they can. Peter Dubacher started the Berkshire Bird Paradise, a certified not for profit company, back in 1972 as a “labor of love.” It has grown into one of the largest bird sanctuaries in the country. The sanctuary has evolved into an outdoor educational institution, where visitors and students on field trips or on college internship programs can learn about birds. The sanctuary is also a small botanical garden with hundreds of plants and exotic flowers. It is open every day, weather depending, from Memorial Day weekend until the end of October.

Chepaitis is the author of eight published books and is faculty at the Western College of Colorado low-residency creative writing program. “Feathers of Hope” was her first non-fiction book. She has followed it with “Rescue of Eagle Mitch,” also involving Berkshire Bird Paradise. This wounded Steppe Eagle was rescued in Afghanistan by a Navy SEAL and an Army Ranger. Barbara facilitated the journey of the now-flightless bird to its home at the Grafton, New York, sanctuary.

PFC. BONAFEDE EARNS TITLE OF U.S. MARINE Marine Corps Pfc. Nicholas C. Bonafede, son of Tonya M. Schlekat of East Greenbush, N. Y., earned the title of United States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C. For 13 weeks, Bonafede stayed committed during some of the world’s most demanding entry-level military training in order to be transformed from civilian to Marine instilled with pride, discipline and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. Training subjects included close-order drill, marksmanship with an M-16A4 rifle, physical fitness, martial arts, swimming, military history, customs and courtesies.

One week prior to graduation, Bonafede endured The Crucible, a 54-hour final test of recruits’ minds and bodies.

Upon completion, recruits are presented the Marine Corps emblem and called Marines for the first time.

Bonafede is a 2012 graduate of Columbia High School of East Greenbush, N. Y.

by Claire Everett I wish that I had some Averill Park athletics news to tell you, but due to rain, hail, wind, thunder, lightening, and overall disgusting weather, the remaining AP athletics were cancelled this week. Track Sectionals, which were planned to take place on Wednesday, 5/ 22, were postponed to Tuesday 5/28. Softball sectionals against Burnt Hills were set to play on Friday 5/24, but were rescheduled for Monday 5/27. I will let you know next week how both of these events played out.

LEARN TO SWIM SAND LAKE TOWN BEACH The Sand Lake Town Beach will open on Wednesday, June 26, 2013. The Town of Sand Lake will be sponsoring swimming lessons at the Town Beach on Reichards Lake. This is a 6 week Saturday program, $10.00 per lesson.

Lately, the weather has been super warm and full of sunshine, which means golfers like Aaron Mosher, a senior at APHS, are hitting the course. Aaron has been golfing for about six years now. After his grandfather got really into the sport, he decided that it looked fun and he’d give it a try. Most sports are physically hard to play, but what Mosher loves about golf is that it challenges you mentally, so it mixes things up for a change.

He also loves that he has met so many new people just from playing. “Golf is really a fun game to play. It can be serious and mentally demanding at times, but then at others, when you’re out playing with your buddies, it can be quite amusing,” says Aaron. This sport, like many others, takes a lot of skill which requires a lot of practice. Mosher likes to get in at least three practices a week, though it can be tough with his busy schedule. Mosher works at the Burden Lake Country Club and AJ’s Pizzeria in his spare time. He also likes to work on cars, hang with friends and go dirt bike riding when he has the chance.

Aaron also has to balance all of this activity with his packed academic schedule. This year he is taking Pre-Calculus, Advanced Placement Government, and other core classes such as English and Health. He plans on attending The University of Albany or RPI for Mechanical Engineering. At some point in his college career, however, he would like to try to get into law school. With all of this going on, Mosher still takes time out of his day to focus on his passion, which is golfing. “I think being a dedicated athlete means giving whatever free time you have to a sport, whether it’s a few hours a week or a few days a week. As long as you’re giving it your all, then you’re being a dedicated athlete,” says Mosher. Aaron would like to thank all of his family members for always being there to help him make good choices throughout his life. He’d also like to thank his coaches for always helping him practice and never letting him give up. We wish Aaron the best of luck in this future!

It is not unusual to see a young bird crouched in the yard or a young rabbit in the flower garden, both apparently abandoned.

Finding a fawn deer lying by itself is also fairly common. Many people assume that young wildlife found alone are helpless and need assistance for their survival, however, in nearly all cases this is a mistake and typically human interaction does more damage than good. Those that see a fawn or other newborn wildlife should enjoy their encounter but keep it brief, maintain some distance and do not attempt to touch the animal.

Young wildlife quickly venture into the world on shaky legs or fragile wings. While most are learning survival from one or both parents, some normally receive little or no care. Often, wild animal parents stay away from their young when people are near. For all of these young animals, the perils of survival are a natural part of life in the wild.

White-tailed deer fawns present a good example of how human intervention with young wildlife can be problematic. Most fawns are born during late May and the first half of June. While fawns are able to walk shortly after birth, they spend most of their first several days lying still. During this period a fawn is also usually left alone by the adult female (doe) except when nursing.

People occasionally find a lone fawn and mistakenly assume it has been orphaned or abandoned, which is very rare. Fawns should never be picked up. If human presence is detected by the doe, the doe may delay its next visit to nurse.

A fawn’s best chance to survive is by being raised by the adult doe. Fawns nurse three to four times a day, usually for less than 30 minutes at a time, but otherwise the doe keeps her distance. This helps reduce the chance that she will attract a predator to the fawn. The fawn’s protective coloration and ability to remain motionless all help it avoid detection by predators and people.

By the end of its second week, a fawn begins to move about more and spend more time with the doe. It also begins to eat grass and leaves. At about ten weeks of age, fawns are no longer dependent on milk, although they continue to nurse occasionally into the fall. During August, all deer begin to grow their winter coat and fawns lose their spots during this process.

Should you find a fawn or other young wildlife, If You Care, Leave It There. In nearly all cases that is the best thing for the animal. DO NOT consider young wildlife as possible pets. This is illegal and is bad for the animal. Wild animals are not well suited for life in captivity and they may carry diseases that can be given to people. The Dean’s List designation is bestowed to those Keene State College undergraduates enrolled in a degree program who have completed a minimum of six credit hours in the semester, receiving no failing or incomplete grades.

A 3.5 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale is required to earn the Dean’s List honor.

Hippology is a competitive event that tests 4-H members’ horse industry knowledge through horse judging, a written exam, equipment identification and interactive stations on feeds, diseases, physiology, breeds and uses. This region encompasses 9 counties in the Capital District area. Thanks goes out to our Rensselaer County Coach Charlene Schermerhorn, as well as the many county and regional volunteers who assisted with the facilitation of the contest. Many practices and homework assignments were given throughout the spring getting members ready for the event. Rensselaer County members were on mixed and county teams and participated as Novice, Juniors and Seniors. Our novice members were Shane and Amanda Thrasher who participated in this event for the very first time. The Junior Team consisted of members-Shiann Faluszczak, Julia Schepici, Erin Goodermote and Brigham Logue. The team placed 1st with Erin placing 4th, Brigham 6th and Shiann 8th individually.

Rensselaer County Senior members Courtney Luskin played on a combined senior team which placed first. Other Senior Team members were Kassie Hetherly of Albany County, Connor Bryant of Saratoga County and Jennifer Van Alpen of Columbia County.

Individually, Courtney placed 1st, Connor 2nd, Kassie 3rd and Jennifer 4th. All 4 juniors and senior members have qualified to represent the region at the State Hippology Contest which will be held at the State Fair at the end of August. This event allows a great venue for challenging youth to sharpen their teamwork skills as well as their Horse Industry knowledge.

Another benefit to the event is providing an environment where youth from different counties can get to know each other and start developing life-long networks. A CITIZEN’S FRAME Fort Orange, named after the Royal Dutch House of Orange, was the first permanent Dutch settlement in New Netherland and was on the site of the present-day city of Albany, New York. In 1623, a ship with 30 French landed near present-day Albany.

There they proceeded to build Fort Orange replacing an older stockade from about 1614 built on Castle Island in the Hudson and abandoned in 1618. The fort’s commander kept 25 or 26 traders there, but no families. In 1626, the commander of Fort Orange and a company of men set out from the fort to assist the Mahicans in their war against the Mohawks. They were ambushed and three of the men were killed approximately a mile from the fort, roughly where Lincoln Park and Delaware Avenue are sited today.

The Dutch built Fort Orange without any Indian consent and continued to hold it only through the goodwill of the Mahicans. When the Charter of Privileges and Exemptions was established in 1629 setting up the patroon system, Kiliaen van Rensselaer established his patroonship of Rensselaerswyck, surrounding Fort Orange on 24 miles of shoreline along the Hudson River and 24 miles inland on each side. The director-general of New Netherland representing the West India Company was Pieter Stuyvesant, who saw the patroon’s position, power, and land as a direct threat to the West India Company’s ability to profit from the beaver pelt trade in Fort Orange. Several confrontations arose over the status of the fort and the right of settlers around it.

After the yearly freshets had damaged much of the fort, the West India Company decided to reconstruct the fort using stone. In response, the patroon’s agent Commander van Schlechtenhorst declared it illegal for anyone to quarry stone within Rensselaerswyck for the fort or for anyone to sell the material to the fort’s commander. All material for the fort then had to be shipped in from outside the colony. Van Schlechtenhorst claimed that Fort Orange had been illegally built on the patroon’s lands, while Stuyvesant pointed out that Fort Orange had been built 15 years prior to the establishment of Rensselaerswyck. By the end of the 1650s, the fort was in disrepair again and Fort Orange was enclosed by a wooden stockade in 1660. In 1663, smallpox raged in Fort Orange, killing one person a day, which was a large percentage given the small population in the fort. On September 8, 1664 the English, after sending numerous war ships to New Amsterdam, demanded the surrender of New Netherland. New Netherland became the Province of New York with Colonel Richard Nicolls as the first English colonial governor, and New Amsterdam was renamed New York.

Letter to the Editor: Rensselaer County Clerk Frank J. Merola is taking exception to comments Governor Cuomo made regarding County Clerk’s handling of the exemption form section of the controversial SAFE. The Governor in his statement implied that any Clerk not agreeing with his position on the SAFE act is not “following the law”.

“New York State doesn’t need another “shoot from the hip” Governor who speaks before examining all the facts.” Mr. Merola said, “The Governor shouldn’t tell me or any other County Clerk what to do and how to do our jobs. More importantly, he should examine his own law. There is no timetable involved for clerks to process these forms that I know of. I am perfectly willing to follow the law, but I have other priorities in my office that command my staff’s immediate attention.”

The main point of contention is the unfunded mandate portion of the SAFE act that passes investigative and administration responsibilities of these permit exemption forms, which would exclude a pistol permit holder from any list produced as a result of a FOIL request down to County record holders, such as Clerks, who have neither staff or money allocated in their budgets to accomplish this task. Under the SAFE act, all state level pistol records are sealed, although the State inexplicably refused to seal all county records.

“The Governor would have saved a lot of work for all County Clerks if he had been consistent and sealed the county as well as the State records.” Mr. Merola said, “Who is going to handle the lawsuit that may arise if we release one record that should have been exempted, but was missed due to lack of manpower and funding. I have no problem following the SAFE act provisions, but if the Governor wants the Clerks to be his enforcement agents, he should provide adequate guidance, funding and staffing to aid enforcement. Until this happens, county pistol record, will remain sealed.”

TABORTON ROAD CREW BUTCHERS ARE AT IT AGAIN! Letter to the Editor: Ah, spring is finally here! The sounds of birds chirping, streams bubbling - and maniacal chainsaws fill the air. The road crew butchers are at it again in Taborton picking up where they last year left off, leaving a fresh swath of destruction behind them.

The once beautiful stretch of Taborton Road from Old Stagecoach to Walk Roads now resembles its lower mountain neighbor - old and young trees have been indiscriminately hacked to stubs and stumps that are a reminder of the shortsighted mentality we are held hostage to. Those of us who value not only road safety (the supposed justification of these “improvements”) but environmental aesthetics and landscaping still have no voice in these practices.

The ladies Auxiliary’s annual shopping trip will be to Lancaster, PA this year. The bus leaves the lodge at 6am sharp on Friday, October 18, 2013, and head to the Rockvale outlets. Dinner at the Good and Plenty Restaurant and return to the Holiday Inn Express for lodging overnight.

Continental breakfast at the hotel in the morning, and then go down to the Kitchen Kettle, and then onto the Tanger’s outlets. We should arrive at the lodge between 10 and 11 on Saturday night. APHS SOPHMORE A. D’ALLEVA FEATURED ON NEWS CHANNEL 13’S KIDS WHO CARE Averill Park High School Sophmore, Andrew D’Alleva, was recently featured as one of News Channel 13’s Kids Who Care (http://wnyt.com/article/stories/S3040927.shtml?cat=10125).

For a year, Andrew has volunteered at the Hawthorne Ridge Senior Living Community in East Greenbush. His role, as technical adviser, has been of great benefit to community members. Andrew has given advice on a variety of computer and device related issues, as well as “troubled shooting” an array of problems.

Andrew was awarded a $500 donation to a charity of his choice.

He chose New Horizons Foundation, a local non-profit which supports a community group in the Dominican Republic (www.funho.org.do). Andrew is a member of Mr. Goodnow’s Global History Honors Class, who have been working with New Horizons Foundation for several years. Miss Nevaen Anderson, age 11, of Troy, has been chosen as a State Finalist in the National American Miss New York Pageant to be held August 15, 2013 at the beautiful Hyatt Regency in Rochester, NY. The National American Miss pageants are held for girls ages 4-18, and have five different age divisions. Navaen will be participating in the Pre-teen 10-12 age division, along with other outstanding young ladies from across the great state of New York.

Miss Nevaen Anderson’s activities include talent, photogenic, casual wear modeling, spokes model and actress. She also enjoys Girl Scouting, writing, coloring and reading.

BELL PARK Have you driven along Route 20 in Brainard NY and wondered what is happening to the former Brainard United Methodist Church property?

Well wonder no more! In early April, the Village of East Nassau became the owner of the property and a committee consisting of community residents, including members of the former church and the village board, have formed Save the Brainard Bell Inc. and have committed to transforming the property into a community pubic BELL PARK under the auspices of the Village Board of East Nassau.

Immediate plans consists of cleaning up the site, followed by the placement of signage while funds are being raised to finance the formation of the Park, which will include the installation of the bell and tower from the former church.

Several fundraising ideas have been presented to the Committee, and donations toward this endeavor are also being graciously accepted and you may help finance the Park by forwarding your contribution payable to Save the Bell Inc, PO Box 71, Brainard, New York 12024.
