by Riley Ludwig Averill Park teams have entered their respective sectional tournaments and are doing great so far! The two track teams had fantastic showings at sectionals, which took place on Wednesday, 5/21, at University at Albany. I’ll begin with the ladies! The Lady Warriors took second in the 4x800m event. Averill Park was represented by senior Michaela Omecinsky, juniors Alexis Reed and Brittney Mack, and freshman Payton Bielawski. Senior Amanda Harrington placed sixth in both the 200m and pole vault events. Junior Kelsey Ernest placed third in the discus event. Nice job, ladies! On the men’s side, the Warriors took first place in the 4x800m event! The team of seniors Wes Clayton and Jarred Austin, as well as sophomores Jeremy Carter and Lukas Morgan competed in this event. The girls’ team placed seventh overall, while the men’s team placed eighth. Jeremy Carter also took second place in the 3200m event, with a time of 9:59.58. Wes Clayton, Jarred Austin, junior Matt Lanoue, and Lukas Morgan placed third in the 4x400m. Overall, the ladies placed seventh, and the guys placed eighth. Congrats everyone! State qualifiers take place on Thursday, 5/29, and Friday, 5/30. Qualifiers will take place at SUNY Albany. Athletes who qualify will move onto the state championships, which take place Friday, 6/6, and Saturday, 6/7. Good luck! The baseball team pulled a huge upset in their first sectionals appearances. Entering the tournament as the eighth seed, they played the number one seed Queensbury at home (due to weather conditions) on Friday, 5/23. Senior Tyler Childrose led the Warriors from the mound. A home run from senior Ben Reinisch and unyielding effort from the team resulted in a 5-2 win for the Warriors! The baseball team advanced to the semifinal round. They faced Amsterdam at The College of Saint Rose on Saturday, 5/24. I will have the results from this matchup in the next column! The softball team also was successful in their first sectionals game. The Lady Warriors received the number two seed spot. They faced the seventh seed Glens Falls at home on Friday, 5/ 23. The ladies pulled off a 6-0 win against Glens Falls and advanced to the semifinal round. They faced the winner of the South Glens Falls/Burnt Hills match-up. The game took place on Wednesday, 5/28. Unified Sports played two games last week. They traveled to and defeated Saratoga on Monday, 5/19. The team traveled to Ballston Spa on Thursday, 5/22, but lost to Ballston Spa, which is their first loss of the season. Nice job, team! Feel free to email me at reludwig512@gmail.com. As always, go Warriors!

Nathan Glanton started playing tennis competitively his freshman year of high school, but had played casually since elementary school. He first became interested for trying out for the team when his good friend, Jake Pagoda, convinced him to give it a go. Now, Nate plays third singles and it is his third year playing varsity tennis. He prepares for games by practicing until 5:30 every day after school and preparing in the off season. Nate runs track in off season and is always at the tennis courts with his friends or coaches. Along with tennis, Nate also plays soccer and indoor track. In Nate’s free time, he enjoys fishing, swimming, skiing, and hanging out with friends. Nate also lifeguards in the summer, and is a proud eagle scout! Nate’s parents have always been there for him, and for that reason they have inspired him to be the person he is today. For Nate’s senior year, he is taking Advanced Placement Macroeconomics, Engineering Design and Development, Engineering Applications, Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature, Cinema and Literature, Health, Participation in Government and Economics; and also took courses at Hudson Valley, Calculus 2, English 101 and Intro to Sports Management. After high school, Nate plans on attending St. John’s University in the fall to major in Finance. He hopes to continue playing soccer, and tennis intramurally. When I asked Nate what being scholar athlete means to him he said, “Being scholar athlete means exceeding standards both on the court and in the classroom.” Congratulations on excelling during your high school years, Nate; we wish you the best of luck with all of your future plans! ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○
