VILLAGE OF NASSAU UPDATE –APRIL 2016 On April 4, the Village of Nassau Board of Trustees met at their annual organizational meeting. Newly-elected Trustee, William Ayer, was sworn in during the meeting and welcomed to the Board. The Board passed a number of resolutions, including acceptance of Mayor Robert Valenty’s appointments to various Village positions, including Deputy Mayor (Trustee Randy Howarth), Clerk (Melissa Turner-Bulan) Deputy Clerk (Tarry Breads), Treasurer (Wendy Ashley), Water Commissioner (Howarth), Code Enforcement Commissioner (Trustee David Scaccia), Animal Control Commissioner (Scaccia), Assessor (Scaccia), Street Commissioner (Ayer), Refuse Commissioner (Ayer), Police/Public Safety Commissioner (Trustee Gaetano Forte), Budget Officer (Valenty), and Historian (Kurt Vincent).

On April 13, the Board held its annual budget hearing. The proposed budget was presented to the audience and then members of the audience weighed in with their thoughts on the budget and priorities proposed by the Board. At the regular meeting that followed the public hearing, the Board passed the proposed budget, establishing the tax levy for the 2016/ 17 fiscal year, beginning June 1, 2016. The budget establishes a tax levy of $319,975 which falls within the state-imposed tax cap of 0.12 percent.

The Village Masterplan Update Committee recently completed its 44th meeting. In the past 30 months, the Committee has reviewed the 1993 masterplan, conducted a survey of Village residents, held several public forums and met with local business owners to discuss the future of the Village, and developed a SWOT analysis. The Committee is currently putting the finishing touches on an updated draft of the Masterplan to be presented to the Board for adoption within the next several months.

Central School District Dear Averill Park School Community, On Sunday, April 17, the Algonquin Middle School students and staff raised over $1600 as part of the Capital Region Best Buddies Friendship Walk at Crossgates Mall. Thank you to our students for making this the most successful walk in the region’s history raising over $115,000 total. The Walk is held to raise awareness and funds to support those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Assistant Superintendent Sharon Lawrence was recognized as a Friend to Education at the annual Capital Region Awards Dinner on Wednesday, April 20. The event, sponsored by CASDA, an education and research non-profit school study council. She was recognized for her more than 20 years of service to the Averill Park Central School District. Sharon is an integral part of the AP staff, and we are thrilled to see her recognized by her peers for her great work.

Students at Algonquin Middle School will be taking trips to Canada as part of the French classes. Seventh grade students will be traveling to Montreal on May 6, while the eighth grade French students will travel to Quebec the weekend of May 1315. As a reminder, Meet the Candidates Night will be held at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, May 10. This will provide interested community members an opportunity to hear from Steven Keller, Peter Schaefer, Stuart Nippes, and Caren Roch, candidates for the three available Board of Education seats. THE BEN FRANKLIN PRESIDENCY

UNITY IN CHRIST At worship on Sunday, May 8, 2016, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, the Nassau Reformed Church will focus on the Gospel of John 17:20-26. It’s here where Jesus prays for his disciples as he prepares to leave them. Specifically, He prays that they would all be one and that, in their unity, the world would see them as one and believe in One God. The theme for worship will center around our prayer life. So often we concentrate on the prayers we offer Christ with little attention to the prayers that Jesus offers us. In the sermon, the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will stress how, in today’s Gospel, Jesus prays for unity in our world which is filled with strife, division, separations, and differences; and that we are to pray for, work for, and promote unity because that is God’s way.

In addition to focus on the Gospel lesson, we will celebrate God’s grace through “Mothers.” The Nassau Reformed Church worships at 11 a.m. in its chapel on the upper level of our Church-School-Building at 43 Church Street (Route 20), approximately one quarter mile east of the only traffic light in the village. Children meet with the congregation at 11 a.m. and then move to Sunday School Class after the children’s sermon.

Letter to the Editor: If Donald Trump or Ted Cruz wins the Republican nomination, who do you think would make for a good Vice-Presidential candidate? There have been more than a few pundits who’ve suggested that the best ticket for winning the general election would be a Trump/Cruz or Cruz/Trump ticket.

This makes perfect sense because of how well liked each of these candidates are by their base. The problem, or at least one of the problems with this ticket is that a lot of Cruz supporters really dislike Trump…and vice versa.

But let’s say the candidates and their supporters were to overcome that hurdle for the sake of The Republic. And let’s also say that they went on to win the general election. How might such an administration play out? God only knows but it’s an interesting exercise to venture a guess.

I look at Donald Trump as kind of a Benjamin Franklin…with maybe a little Patrick Henry mixed in. Would Ben Franklin have been a good President? He was essential to the creation of The Republic, but while he knew a lot about how to broker the deal, he obviously left the system’s complexities to others.

Cruz on the other hand reminds me of a George Washington, Thomas Payne figure. He knows what it’s all about and has the determination to see it through. The Presidency of George Washington is a known commodity, but I can also envision Cruz as a great Vice President restoring the role of President of the Senate.

Either of these men could make a great President. Each has a lot of what it takes but I think the more important question is: Do we as a people have what it takes, to make America great again?

YARD & GARDEN GUIDE

During my ministry in Sand Lake during the past ten years, one of my joys has been the ecumenical cooperation among the pastors and the members of the local churches which share together as Sand Lake Area Association of Churches.

Throughout each year there are several services and events which are part of this cooperation. The next will be the National Day of Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, May 5 from 7 am-8:30 am at the West Sand Lake Fire Hall. Publicity and reservation information is available through our local churches.

Every Sunday worship during our pastoral prayer, I pray for these churches of the Sand Lake Area Association of Churches: Church of the Covenant, Trinity Lutheran, St. Henry’s Catholic, Salem United Methodist, Sand Lake Baptist, West Stephentown Baptist and Zion’s United Church of Christ. Although most local towns and cities have comparable ecumenical clusters of Christian churches, these are the ones in which I have been involved while living and working here. I encourage you, wherever you live and whatever your faith tradition, to support the churches in your own community.

If you are active within a local church, you will know personally the many benefits of being in covenant and fellowship with others throughout the year. If you do not have a home church, I encourage you to visit and get to know more about the places and ways where people put into practice their beliefs and learn to grow in love and care within and beyond their own local faith traditions.

I have taught people of different traditions about each other by leading tours to visit the local churches listed above about twice each year. As a student of ecumenical church history for over fifty years, I delight in escorting people to visit these different churches. These tours have helped us learn together about how Christians are much the same and how there are differences in beliefs and practices. These visits have helped us understand each other better even though we may worship in different places and ways. Learning to love and respect each other within the Christian fellowship helps us learn how to widen our love and respect for all people in our society and world. May you make your own explorations and learn about others.

Trinity Lutheran Church of West Sand Lake has a special Contemporary Service on the Third Sunday of each month at 9:00 a.m. The music chosen for this service is always very special with guitar music and piano playing. The chosen hymns are also so spiritual and meaningful.

Varsity Girls Track competed at the Cohoes Relays on 4/30. At the meet, Payton Bielawski, Christina Bucci, and Meg Glanton set a new school record for the 3X400 hurdles. Also Alana Carroll and Payton Bielawski also set a new meet record for the pole vault relay. The Girls also ran at the Penn Relays on 4/ 28. Alana Carroll placed 2nd in pole vault and set a new school record with a vault 11’11.75.

Varsity Boys Track competed at the Cohoes Relay on 4/30. At the meet, David Cocca set a new PR in Shotput with a throw of 48’1.25". David Cocca also set a new PR in discus with a throw of 138’6". David’s throw helped the discus relay which consisted of Jamie Cocca, Marty Bond, and himself, take first place for the meet with the combined distance of 362’11". The Boys also competed at the Penn Relays on 4/30. At Penn, Hunter DuPont, Christian Nash, Sean Harrington, and Lukas Morgan ran for AP in the 4x400m and finished with a time of 3:33.

Varsity Boys Tennis lost to Ballston Spa High School 9-0 on 4/ 29. On 4/22, the Warriors lost to Guilderland High School 7-2.

The boys also lost to Niskayuna High School 8-1 on 4/25. Their next game is against Colonie High School at Averill Park High School at 4:15 pm on 5/6.

Varsity Softball lost to Liverpool High School 6-2 on 4/30. Senior Tori Fisher had a RBI double. The Lady Warriors defeated Oneida High School 5-4 on 4/30. They also beat Mechanicville 5-3 on 4/28. Amanda Mosall, Olivia Kelley, and Laura Wendell each had a RBI. Their next game is against Colonie at Averill Park High School at 4:15 pm on 5/6.

Varsity Baseball lost a close game against Ballston Spa High School 5-4 on 4/29. Their next game is against Pittsfield High School at Averill Park High School at 4:00 pm on 5/6.

Varsity Girls Lacrosse lost to Guilderland High School 18-8 on 4/ 29. The Lady Warriors crushed Colonie High School 15-7 on 4/ 25. This week as Scholar Athlete, we will be honoring senior, Olivia Marrochello.

Liv plays defense for the AP Varsity Lacrosse team. She first got into lacrosse when she was in 7th grade, because she was looking to try something new after playing softball for most of her life.

To prepare for her season, Liv likes to go for runs regularly, go to before and after school workouts, and participate in an indoor lacrosse league with other people from the team. In season, she practices 5-6 times a week with her team. In her spare time, you can find Liv running, cooking, reading, or watching TV. She is also a member of National Honor Society, Key Club, and the Unified Sports Youth Activation Committee. Olivia’s biggest inspirations are her parents, “They always support me in whatever I do, and go out of their way for me” she says. In school, Liv maintains a 96 GPA, while taking challenging courses such as AP Calc, AP Government and Politics, AP English, French, Spanish, Physics, and Forensics. After high school, she plans on attending Boston University and majoring in Public Relations. When asked what being a scholar athlete means to her, Olivia replied, “It means that you’re able to find a balance between school and athletics, while challenging yourself both in and out of the classroom.”

DEC TO HOST PUBLIC MEETINGS ON DEER MANAGEMENT Participate Online or In-Person for an Update on New York’s Deer Program and to Provide Input New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will host a webinar “New York Deer Management Update” the evenings of May 10 and May 12. Both nights will have the same content. Any member of the public can participate on either night by connecting online from the comfort of their own home or by joining DEC staff at locations throughout the state.

The webinar is designed to inform New York deer hunters and the general public about current issues in deer management and to set the stage for updating DEC’s Management Plan for White-tailed Deer in New York State. DEC will provide an overview of the state’s deer management program, outline progress on current deer program activities including a brief explanation of DEC’s recent decision to encourage hunters to voluntarily pass up young bucks, and discuss current management priorities including urban-suburban deer over abundance, reducing deer impacts on forests, and other issues.

The presentation will be simulcast online and to a number of meeting venues where participants will have opportunity to meet their regional DEC deer biologist. After the presentation, DEC staff will be available online and in-person to answer questions and discuss public concerns about deer management.

GREENBUSH CEMETERY UPDATE The Greenbush Cemetery was incorporated in 1845 in the Town of East Greenbush, NY. It is a non-profit. Over the years, the age of the cemetery began to show. In 2007, it was nearly abandoned. We have brought the cemetery back from abandonment, but we need financial help maintaining it. Most of the families of the residents and lot owners have died off or moved away. The State of New York has laws governing the management of non-profit cemeteries. A permanent maintenance fund principal must remain intact indefinitely. The interest from this trust can be used for paying upkeep such as mowing, repairs and insurance fees. For every burial and sale of lots, the Board of Trustees pays fees to the fund.

The Greenbush Cemetery averages about 10 burials a year with fewer lot sales. With interest rates so low, we have very little income to mow the cemetery. The lowest bidder this year is $1,000.00 per mow and will mow every other week for the season. We need help to keep this beautiful, local historic cemetery operating. As legislative representatives of District 4, including the towns of Schodack, Sand Lake and Nassau, we are happy to provide our constituents with a report on actions taken at the April 12, 2016 legislative meeting.

Like many, we were very happy to hear news that the proposed Kinder Morgan Northeast Energy Direct project has been suspended. The project has been very controversial, with neighbors and local elected officials very concerned about the impact of the pipeline and large compressor station proposed to be routed through the towns of Schodack, Nassau and Stephentown. We shared those concerns, recognizing the potential negative impacts to health, safety, quality of life, property values and economic vitality.

At the April 12 meeting, prior to the announcement of the project’s suspension, we renewed a request to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to cancel the project based on the potential negative impacts, overwhelming opposition, and failure by Kinder Morgan to answer reasonable questions regarding the project. We recognize the project is now suspended, and will remain vigilant and responsive if there are new developments. Thank you to the many residents who have contacted us with kind words following the suspension of the project.

We also approved a resolution commending the Columbia High School Girls Bowling team for winning the 2016 New York State championship. Congratulations to the players, coaches, fans and parents on this terrific accomplishment.

The Legislature also approved resolutions for the repair, maintenance and improvement of county roads during the spring and summer.

Thank you to the many residents who participated in the electronics recycling event sponsored by the County Legislature on April 23 at the County Office Building. It was great to see many of our neighbors and see so many unwanted electronics, computers and appliances recycled in a safe and convenient manner.

Tom and Mary Phibbs celebrated 60 years of marriage on 4/14/16. They were married at St. Jude’s Church in Wynantskill, NY. They have 3 children, Kathy (Marty) Andrews, Tom (Colleen) Phibbs and Karen (Jim) Ferritto. Their grandchildren include Samantha and Tyler Andrews and Tom and Ryan Phibbs.

Mary and Tom have lived in Wynantskill most of their married lives and traveled to every state in the US (except for Hawaii) on their Gold Wing motorcycle. The past seven winters they have joined their friends at their mobile in Lakeland, Florida.

THE MORE YOU GET, THE MORE YOU SPEND Letter to the Editor: As the final state budget was completed, East Greenbush Schools apparently dodged a financial bullet on state aid cuts. While fortunate in some ways, this gives the District an excuse to continue its careless spending habits. The constant increase in costs – mainly salaries, benefits, pension expenses, and other payouts – would normally cripple other types of institutions. With schools, however, the simple response is to send larger tax bills to residents living in the community.
