Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino is reporting that the recent Youth Summit Conference aimed at educating the young adults of our community to the potentially deadly consequences of drugs and alcohol is making a difference in our communities. “The efforts put forth to prevent drug and alcohol use are a year round fight to help our young people make the right choices for their future,” said Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino. “Once again this year the Youth Summit worked to harness positive peer pressure by teaching our young adults how to reach their peers and convince them that drinking and using drugs is never safe, appropriate, or acceptable.” Rensselaer County, through its Underage Drinking Coalition, hosts two Youth Summits a year. The program provides a number of local schools an opportunity to highlight their efforts and projects to reinforce to their peers as well as other members of the community about the consequences of underage alcohol use. Nearly 80 students from Rensselaer County schools participated in the recent event where they participated in training workshops. The guest speaker at the event was Javier Sanchez. According to his biography Mr. Sanchez is a professional spokesperson who incorporates his expertise in the area of effective youth empowerment with his love of Hip Hop music and comedy. Mr. Sanchez is an advocate for youth and has been encouraging teens to realize that once they catch a vision and a sense of purpose for their life, there are no limits to their potential. In concluding her remarks, Jimino stated, “Rensselaer County is committed to preventing the tragedies that all too often occur when the youth of our communities use drugs or alcohol, and I know our collective efforts are making a difference,” concluded Jimino.
