by Claire Everett I am back on American soil and ready to do some reporting! I would like to thank Riley Ludwig for filling in for me for the last two weeks. I read both of her columns and was very impressed. Thanks again Riley; great job! While I was gone, Averill Park competed in a number of events in all sports ranging from Lacrosse to Track and Field. The Warriors rose to meet the challenge. First, the lady AP lacrosse team battled against four different schools this week. On Tuesday, the girls took on Emma Willard and started the week off right, beating them 10-7. Top scorers were Morgan Lionarons and Sofi Sorriento, each with four goals. Then the ladies challenged Niskayuna on Wednesday, but this time fell short 13-6. Goals were scored by Morgan Lionarons (3), Caitlin O’Shea (2) and Megan Balter (1). On Thursday, the Warriors played against Schenectady, easily pulling out a win, 12-4. The ladies earned goals from top scorers Morgan Lionarons, who tallied 4 goals, and Emily Halpin, Caitlin O’Shea, and Sofi Sorriento who each scored 2. Finally, on Friday, the girls hosted Guilderland. Unfortunately, AP couldn’t maintain the momentum from the win over Schenectady, losing 15-3. Goals were scored by Megan Lettko, Emma Teitano, and Sofi Sorriento. The Track and Field team had one of their most eventful weeks so far as they competed in the Penn Relays. The Penn Relays are the first and oldest of the relay meets. On average, the meet holds one race every minute and continues for about 33 hours. Averill Park took part in the competition along with high school and college teams from around the world. High schools from places like Jamaica, the Bahamas, and South Africa were represented. Averill Park competed in the 4x100, and 4x400 boys and girls relays. The boy’s placed 7th out of 15 in the 4x400 relay for small school high schools. The girl’s relay teams placed 207th out of a total of 357 teams in the 4x100, and 9th out of 13th in the 4x400 for small school high school relay. Congratulations to all the AP athletes that represented AP so well in this prestigious and challenging meet. I hope the team carries a new confidence into the approaching post-season! The baseball and softball teams were also busy this week. The baseball team took on three schools. AP first played Niskayuna on Tuesday, and although they had some great performances, the boys fell short. Then on Thursday, the boys battled Guilderland and again couldn’t pull out a win. Finally, on Friday, the Warriors played against Gloversville, this time coming out on top 8-2. Congratulations to Nolan Gray who pitched 6 shutout innings. Great job to all the Aboys! The AP ladies softball team played three games this week against some tough competition. On Monday, the Warriors took on traditionally dominant Shaker and pulled out an amazing win, 9-2. Then AP played Niskayuna on Tuesday, and earned another win, 5-2. On Friday, the Warriors played their final game of the week against Guilderland. The two teams were neck and neck the entire time and the contest went into extra innings, but sadly Guilderland was able to get the upper hand in the 10th, winning 7-6. There is no rest for the Warrior of Averill Park. Our athletes are fighting some of their last battles of the spring as the seasons slowly approach Sectionals.

This week’s Scholar Athlete is one who constantly pushes herself to be the best at everything she can. Sarah Caruso, a senior at Averill Park High School, has been playing lacrosse for five years now. Her position is always defense and it’s either the bottom defender or d-wing. Caruso’s favorite part of playing lacrosse is the speed and intensity of the game. “Lacrosse games have a very different feel and level of speed from volleyball, which is my other sport.” Games for Sarah are extremely exciting, but can also be very frustrating. As a defender, Caruso states, “It is easy to get discouraged when the other team scores”. However, an athlete as dedicated and focused as Sarah, knows that you must communicate with your teammates and get a good momentum going from the start of the game. Caruso spent a lot of time preparing for the season, because that’s what it takes to become a successful lacrosse player. Sarah ran indoor track in the winter, which she received the scholar athlete award for, while also playing for an indoor lacrosse team to work on her skills. To Sarah, being a scholar athlete means you can balance good grades with being a good athlete. “They Challenge themselves in the classroom as well as on the field,” says the athlete. That being said, Caruso is also an outstanding student. This year she has a packed schedule including Advanced Placement English, Advanced Placement Government, Spanish 5, Cinema Literature, Physics, Senior Portfolio and Statistics. She plans to attend a four year University next year, but is still unsure of where she would like to go. Sarah will be majoring in Communications/Public Relations and minoring in marketing. Caruso doesn’t like having a lot of down time, so she keeps herself busy by participating in Odyssey of the Mind and other school functions. She is also the school treasurer and a member of the National Honors Society (NHS). Unfortunately, Sarah tore her ACL recently and will not be able to finish the season. An athlete like Sarah, however, still deserves recognition for all of her effort and success over the years. She has never been more disappointed, because she won’t be able to finish her senior year playing lacrosse with all of her teammates. However, Sarah is going to take full advantage of the opportunities she is given in college, because she would love to continue playing. Caruso would like to thank all of her teammates for being so supportive through her injury. She would also like to thank all of the coaches she’s had over the years for being supportive and always keeping her on her feet. We wish Sarah the best of luck and we hope she heals up fast!
