429-6380 PLANT DONATIONS NEEDED

TEXAS HOLD’EM Chandler Young VFW on RT 20 and Lyons Lake Road in Nassau will hold a Texas Hold’em on Sunday, April 14th. Doors open at 12PM and play begins at 1PM. For more information, call Claudia at 423-5957 or Charlotte 7663970.

Spring Has Sprung! Saturday, May 11th, will be here before you know it and people will be waiting for the plant sale to open at 8:00 a.m. at Salem United Methodist Church on Shaver Rd., West Sand Lake. Before that happens, however, we need lots of plants to sell so our customers won’t be disappointed. That’s where you can help – and get help, at the same time. If you have any perennials that need to be thinned out, especially the ones that people want the most (please, no purple iris, orange day lillies or hosta as we have sufficient quantities of those), call Mary at 674-5436 after April 20th (if you can divide them yourself, please call her and let her know that). We hope to see you!

Dr. Kenneth W. Boynton began his dental practice over 27 years ago in a small house in the heart of Kinderhook. Several years later, joined by a support staff of two, Dr. Boynton moved his practice to the Valatie Medical Arts Center, located at the intersection of Route 9 and Main Street in the Village of Valatie. Eager to serve patients and their families that he came to know on a first name basis, he enhanced the services provided at the practice with state of the art dentistry using the most current tools and techniques at his disposal. Dentistry at this practice is personalized to meet the unique requirements of each patient. As a private, dentist-owned practice, it is important to Dr. Boynton that patient care is not dictated by the constraints of a mass marketed dental corporation or cost driven insurance industry. Patients can rest assured that in choosing Dr. Boynton’s family dental practice, every patient is given the time and attention necessary to explore dental concerns, develop treatment plans specific to their own needs and to develop a relationship with the professionals entrusted with their care. As the years passed, the practice has grown leaps and bounds. Dr. Boynton has embarked on a journey to grow his practice in response to the increasing number of patients who are looking for quality care in a warm and caring environment. Dr. Boynton anticipates the addition of another doctor joining the staff in the near future. A recent addition to the professional staff, who currently splits his time between St Peter’s Dental Clinic and Dr. Boynton’s, Dr. Anthony Cavanagh brings the value of his recent schooling and well developed skill set to the practice. Patients appreciate the flexibility of extended hours and the ability to have a full array of services available to them thanks to the combined skill set of dedicated professionals. Service is not just limited to dental cleanings, fillings, crowns and bridges. Dental care begins with an unhurried discussion of the patient dental history and concerns followed by a thorough examination, including digital x-rays and photos, as necessary. Treatment plans are developed using a variety of tooth restoration options including dental fillings, bridges, implants, and time saving – one appointment Cerec crowns. Conscientious hygiene care at the office and follow-up at home help to limit patients’ exposure to more involved and potentially expensive restorative treatment. Patients can also take advantage of a variety of tooth whitening and veneer options to enhance their appearance and confidence. The staff at Kenneth W. Boynton, DMD, is always available to answer questions about the practice and the care that they will receive.

“IN THE PARK” By Hannah Leffler With the end of the year coming closer, it’s time for all good things to come to an end, at least for now. The Last show of the Averill Park Off-Broadway Players season is coming up soon! On April 19th and April 20th, they will be hosting their last show, Musical Comedy Murders Of 1940 by John Bishop. On both nights, the show will start at 7pm and the cost on entry is $3 for students and senior citizens and $5 for adults. Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 is a very long name but an amazing show. Taking place in a Mansion, everyone who was once a part of an old show is brought together, and a murderer is amongst them. Mixed with antics, love, spinning bookcases, stabbings, jokes, hidden passageways, comedians and some German accents this play is a must see! You will be thrilled, shocked, and laugh your socks off all in one scene! It’s a show you don’t want to miss! It’s the last show of the season and the Off-Broadway Players will leave you yearning for next year! Don’t forget, you have two nights to see it Friday, April 19th; and Saturday, April 20th, at 7pm at the high school! Everyone is welcome to attend!

NASSAU FREE LIBRARY NAMES NEW DIRECTOR Katherine Chansky, new library director at Nassau Free Library, will be taking over from current library director, Patricia Sahr, who is retiring. Katherine’s most recent job was as Special Collections Reference Librarian for the Rhode Island Historical Society in Providence, Rhode Island, where she worked with historic manuscripts and rare books. KIWANIS HOSTS FREE “DISSIPATED EIGHT” CONCERT

SCHODACK SHOULD PLAN FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS Letter to the Editor: The year is 2050, or some future time, and Schodack has developed into a metropolis with businesses of many types stretching out Rt. 20 as far as Beaver Rd., including the back land as well as along the highway because of a 12 inch water line installed back around year 2000. All of Rt. 9 has also been pretty much developed. Rt. 20 is having a sewer problem as the planners back around 2013 felt an 8 inch line would be adequate. Maybe they didn’t think about a gravity sewer line being effective all the way to Beaver Rd. and maybe the 8 inch line would be adequate to that point. But now development has halted, because that 8 inch line cannot take any more sewerage, especially when it reaches the 9 & 20 split because the sewage from part of or all of Rt. 9 is also joining the 8 inch main. Here we are back in 2013; What 8" main you may ask? Dunkin Doughnuts (DD) is about to build an 8" sewer line to join the sewer line in Schodack Center. Now is the time to prevent that problem which our future generations will encounter. DD is paying for all the expense of installing the new sewer line from their establishment across from the Schodack Police station all the way to Kraft Rd. The gravity 8 inch line would run along Rt. 9&20 only as far as the Moordeners Kill, as the rest of the line would be a smaller line under pressure and appears to be adequate. Wouldn’t it be advisable for Schodack to offer to pay the difference of the cost of 12 inch pipe instead of the 8 inch pipe? I suspect the ditch would be the same size, so the excavation would not cost any extra. Why chance an 8 inch bottle neck, especially when we are talking of only about 2,000 feet. If the town has a 12 inch line under pressure for fresh water, how can an 8 inch line return the sewer water? ~ Raymond W. Lemka, Schodack resident Editors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

MAKE DONATIONS GROW DURING APRIL AT DOORS OF HOPE It’s always nice when we make a donation to have value added to our gift. That’s just what happens during the month of April to gifts of food and money that are donated to Doors of Hope located at 4352 NY Hwy 150, West Sand Lake. Every spring the Feinstein Foundation divides $1 million among hunger fighting organizations across the nation. In that time span, all donated food items are weighed and money gifts recorded and reported to the foundation. Perhaps you, your church, organization, business, or school would like to join this effort during April and have your donations increase in value. It’s a good time to give! ~ Naomi Boel (D.O.H. board member)

purrfect kitty of the month PLEASE ADOPT ME! Hi, I’m Flower! I’m a spunky female kitty that was abandoned in Guilderland & I’m now looking for a good home. You may have seen me in this space before as I was here last summer with my sister, who has since been adopted. I’ve really been patient and know it’ll be my turn soon! I’m 3.5 years old, and as you can see in this picture, I’m decked out in soft black & white fur. I’m a pretty chatty kitty and the volunteers say I’m gentle & friendly, personable & playful! I would really love to find my forever home. Would you please consider adopting me? As with all Purrfect Companion kitties, Flower is up-to-date on routine shots, house trained and neutered or spayed. For more information on Flower, please contact the following Purrfect Companions’ representative: Maryann at 331-2221 or at kitties.purrfectcompanions@yahoo.com. Please use this phone number ONLY for adoption purposes! Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all volunteer rescue organization. TAKE ‘EM OUT IN CUFFS! Letter to the Editor: But…. don’t use my name. As a matter of fact, I’m not giving you my name either. I’m an anonymous caller. Whatever I tell you is the absolute truth. Now go and arrest them. Take their dog away from them and give them a hefty fine. They deserve it. After all, there are laws! Go get ‘em. Click! They hang up. The call is made from a blocked number. Messages such as this are also sent by email and left on the answering machine. They almost always mention that there are laws. That much is correct. There are laws. One important law these callers don’t mention states that there must be a witness to a violation of the law before a ticket is issued. If a dog is barking keeping you up all night, destroying your property or attempting to attack your family, there is a legal procedure in place to address the problem. Without it, false accusations and vendetta-based complaints would fill the courts. If you have a problem with your neighbor, it may be a good idea to talk to your neighbor first. If no remedy can be found, call your municipal animal control officer for information on other options. Give the officer your name and contact information, and then tell the truth without embellishment. There are laws, but you can’t accomplish anything if your primary concern is hiding your identity. ~ Catherine Crawmer, Animal Control Officer 477-8230

Nike is big in size and in heart. Very social and affectionate, Nike gets along great with dogs and children. This big boy would probably do well in a household with other young, playful cats. AUTISM: A MOTHER’S PERSPECTIVE In the spirit of Autism Awareness month, I feel the need to lay my heart out in this piece. As most of you know, I am a mother. I am also a mother of a child with Autism. Two and a half years ago, my husband and I were handed this diagnosis and it completely turned our lives upside down. Sure, the intense schedule with therapists, numerous doctors, online research and parental guilt were all abundant. But what really turned our lives upside down was the blessing that is our son. He has taught us that the smallest moments can mean so much. No money can buy the extreme pride that comes after hearing “mommy” for the first time at age 3 ½, getting a kiss and hug at age 4 or hearing him use a sentence for the first time at age 4 1/2. He has taught us to be happy. I am overjoyed when I hear Max’s “Eeeee!” when he gets too happy to contain himself, like when he’s playing in the mud. Sometimes, when nobody is looking, I’ll play in the mud too. It truly is therapy money can’t buy! He’s taught us to love. I used to see so much dark in the world. But our son radiates with so much love, for everything, that I can finally see the good in this world. Lastly, he has taught us to be ourselves. God did not put our son on this Earth to be like someone else. He is going to use his intelligence and perspective to make a difference. We can all learn something here. What may seem as a huge disappointment may in turn be a blessing in disguise. Cherish the little moments. All is well. Just love. Be you. Sometimes it seems too simple, doesn’t it?

TOWN OF SAND LAKE A MESSAGE FROM THE ASSESSOR Sand Lake has just completed the first step of our 2013 valuation update. If your assessment has increased, you will be mailed a notice with the new amount. Only those properties with increases will have notices mailed in an effort to reduce our Town’s expenses. If you receive a notice, take some time to review the new tentative assessment. The first question to ask is: If I were to sell my property, what would it sell for? Is that amount less than or about the same as your new tentative assessment? If the answer to this question is yes, and you are satisfied with your tentative assessment, you need not take any further action. However, if you question the accuracy of your tentative assessment, or just want to check other assessments, there will be copies of sales listings, photos of sales and a listing of all new tentative assessments located at the Town Hall during regular business hours for your review. If after reviewing the information you find sales or assessments of similar properties that support a lower assessment you should fill out a copy of the “SAND LAKE REVIEW APPLICATION” which is included with your notice. If your assessment has been reduced or is unchanged, you may still schedule an appointment for an Informal Review with my office. To schedule an appointment for an Informal Review, call (518) 674-2026 Ext. 24. After reviewing all applications, you will be notified by mail of the decision. If you are not satisfied with the findings, you are entitled to file for a formal hearing at this year’s Grievance Day scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, 2013. ~ Judy Goodyer, Sand Lake Town Assessor

athlete OF THE WEEK RACHEL VAN VLECK ~SCHOLAR ATHLETE~ by: Lauren Navratil

by Claire Everett Finally! Averill Park varsity sports have entered the spring season. Multiple sport teams have put on their uniforms and entered the battle of the regular season. This week was the first week of sports competition for our lady lacrosse Warriors. AP’s first competition was against Colonie on Thursday, the 4th of April. The game was hard fought, and AP ended up demolishing Colonie, 13-9. A great first game was played by Emily Halpin, who scored 5 goals, and Morgan Lionarons, who scored 4. The next day, the Ladies challenged Bethlehem. The Warriors again brought out a great game, but unfortunately, fell short 17-8. Top Goal scorers were Sofi Sorriento, who scored 3 goals, and Morgan Lionarons and Megan Lettko, who each scored 2 goals. Great start to the season ladies, keep it up! The baseball and softball teams also started their seasons this week. AP’s baseball team played Colonie on Friday 4/05. AP pulled out a win for their first game of the season, beating Colonie 7-5. Then the boys took on Catholic Central on Friday. Sadly, AP couldn’t keep up their winning momentum and lost, 8-3. The softball team also played Colonie this week. The Warriors played Colonie as well on Friday. Although it was a close game, and the girls showed heart, the score did not reflect their efforts; the ladies fell short, 5-0. Although the AP season did not get off to the strongest start, both the baseball and softball teams are optimistic in their future performances. Boys and girls outdoor track also started this week, outcomes will be given in the next column. The spring season has just begun, although, I will not be reporting about it for the next couple of weeks. For the next two weeks, Riley Ludwig, a junior, and athlete at AP, will be reporting the sports while I am on a service trip. I will see you in a couple of weeks, and I assure you, I leave you in good hands! If you have any questions or comments feel free to contact me at claireeverett11@gmail.com.

Spring sports here at Averill Park High School are really starting to heat up as the season unfolds. One athlete in particular, stands out above the crowd. Rachel Van Vleck, a member of the Girls’ Varsity softball team, is certainly not an athlete to be missed. Rachel has been playing softball for twelve years. She began playing recreational softball for local Classie Lassie teams and eventually began playing for others. Her main position is the catcher, but you can also spot her playing first base or in the outfield. To stay in shape for the season, Van Vleck is constantly practicing skills with her travel teams and also hitting the batting cages every so often. Rachel is extremely dedicated to improving her game as much as possible, because when the time comes to play, she loves the feeling of her hard work paying off. “When you manage to correctly execute a skill, it’s a great feeling,” says the athlete. Rachel’s favorite part of playing is when the team manages to be successful offensively as well as defensively to end with a solid win. Van Vleck rarely has any free time on her hands, because she also has a very packed school schedule this year. She is currently taking Advanced Placement Biology, Spanish, Physics, and PreCalculus, all while maintaining a 91 GPA. “Being a scholar athlete to me means you have to have good time management in order to balance school work and the requirements for your sport as well as your life outside of school,” says Rachel. As for the future, she would attend either Russell Sage or The University of Rhode Island for nursing. Aside from school and playing softball, Rachel enjoys spending time with her family and friends and also helping to coach a ten and under Classie Lassie Team. Rachel would like to thank her family and coaches for pushing her and supporting her in every part of her life. She would like to give a special thanks to her dad for inspiring her to have confidence and be more outgoing. We wish Rachel and the rest of the Girls’ Varsity Softball team the best of luck in the remainder of their season.

DEC ANNOUNCES PROPOSED CHANGES TO NYS FALCONRY REGULATIONS Public Comment Period Runs Through May 6 Proposed changes to the regulations governing the sport of falconry are now out for public comment, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced. The proposed regulations are in response to changes to the Federal regulations governing the sport of falconry published by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. DEC consulted with the Falconry Advisory Board in developing the regulations. In addition, in April 2012, the Environmental Conservation Law was amended to change the falconry license term and fee thereby requiring subsequent changes to the state regulations. DEC will be accepting public comments through May 6, 2013. DEC worked with the New York State Falconry Advisory Board to review and incorporate the federal regulation changes into New York’s proposed regulation changes. The proposed regulations will provide regulatory relief for falconers and increase the number of raptors that can be possessed by General Falconers and Master Falconers. The proposed regulations authorize additional activities under the authority of a falconry license including: conducting conservation education programs, conducting limited propagation, and assisting wildlife rehabilitators with the assessment and conditioning of raptors prior to release. In accordance with the new state legislation, the license term and license fee for falconry licenses will change from 20 dollars for a 4 year license to 40 dollars for a 5 year license.

A CITIZEN’S FRAME A Study in Ineptness-The 1962 Mets The annual Spring ritual of Opening Day has come and gone and for those of us who lived through 5 years on no National League baseball form 1957 to 1962 in New York City, it will only recall the 1962 Mets. We were so grateful to see our Giants and Dodgers return as the enemy, we overlooked their incompetence. As the season wore on, we were treated to such clumsy players as “Marvelous Marv” Throneberry who once hit a ball over 400 feet for what appeared to be a triple. However, on an appeal play he was deemed to have not touched second base and was ruled out. When Manager Casey Stengel raced from the dugout to argue the call, the first base umpire told him not to argue too hard because Throneberry also failed to touch first base. The Mets had a shortstop Elio Chacon who did not speak English and would routinely run into Centerfielder Richie Ashburn on pop-ups into short centerfield. After the third collision, Ashburn sought help from teammate Joe Christopher who was bi-lingual. “How do you say ‘I got it’ in Spanish?” he asked Christopher. “Yo Lo Tengo”, Christopher replied. When the next pop-up occurred, Ashburn came running in screaming “Yo Lo Tengo” at the top of his lungs. Chacon stopped dead in his tracks. Ashburn settled under the ball only to be knocked arse over teakettle by the left fielder Frank Thomas. He didn’t speak Spanish! Dick Stuart, affectionately known as Dr. Strangeglove, was once hit on the shoulder by a wicked line drive. When Casey came out to see his writhing in pain first baseman, Stuart said, “Casey, I must be getting old. I used to be able to get out of the way of those things”. Once in Cincinnati with the score 15-0 against them, Casey went out to the mound to take out the pitcher. He signaled to the bullpen for a reliever. No one came out. He signaled again. Still no one emerged. He signaled a third time with the same result. Finally, the umpire pointed to the scoreboard and to Casey, “Maybe they are afraid to come out?” At the end of year, the Mets gave Ashburn, who had hit .301 for the year, a boat as their Most Valuable Player. When he put it into the water, it sank! The most inept player the ’62 Mets ever had was a catcher named Harry Chiti, who was acquired from the White Sox in July, for a player to be named 30 days later. After 30 days, the Mets returned Chiti to the White Sox, he was so bad he couldn’t make the ’62 Mets!

WYNANTSKILL FIRE DEPARTMENT RECRUIT NEW YORK

LAURIE ROMER HONORED BY DIVISION OF MILITARY AND NAVAL AFFAIRS

The Wynantskill Fire Department will open its doors Sunday, April 28th, 2013, from 10am to 2pm in conjunction with National Volunteer Week 2013 and the Fireman’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY). We are inviting the community to learn what it means to be a volunteer. Our goal is to boost our active membership to provide vital emergency fire and rescue services to the Town of North Greenbush. Wynantskill Fire is sounding the alarm! If you have what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter, the time is now to come on board. The Wynantskill Fire Department in North Greenbush Fire District # 1 is a 100% volunteer organization established in 1915 that provides emergency services 24 hours a day. Wynantskill Fire Department’s non-emergency number is (518) 283-5506. We also invite you to like our Facebook page and visit our website at www.WynantskillFire.com.

Division of Military and Naval Affairs employee Laurie Romer has been awarded the agency’s Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of her service as the agency responded to Hurricane Sandy. Romer, who works in the DMNA state personnel office, played a key role in processing $9 million that was paid to more than 4,500 members of the New York National Guard who served during the state response to the storm in November. Her work was exemplary and ensured that these Soldiers and Airmen were paid in a timely manner, her citation says. While serving at the direction of the governor, members of the Army and Air National Guard are paid by the state instead of the federal government. Romer lives in East Greenbush with her husband Randy and sons Jack and David.

CARRIE LEVINN RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP Carrie Levinn, a junior from Averill Park, N.Y., received one of 271 scholarships that the Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awarded to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States for the 201314 academic year. The students were selected on academic merit from a field of 1,107 mathematics, science and engineering students nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The award covers the cost of tuition, fees, books, room and board to a maximum of $7,500 per year. It’s the third consecutive year that a Geneseo student has received a Goldwater Scholarship and the 17th Geneseo student to receive the honor since the scholarship was established in 1992. Levinn has been involved as an undergraduate researcher at Geneseo under the tutelage of David Johnson, professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry, and Eric Helms, assistant professor of chemistry. “Carrie is highly deserving of this award,” said Johnson. “She truly enjoys the research process and works confidently and independently in the lab, but also works well as a member of a research group, displaying outstanding written and oral communication skills. I am confident she will excel in all of her academic pursuits.” “I have no doubt that Carrie will excel at anything she puts her mind to,” said Helms. “She stands out due to her genuine interest in the science and not just an interest in her grades — something uncommon among the many students I encounter.” Levinn’s focus is bioorganic chemistry and the study of natural products. Her goal is to obtain a doctorate in chemistry and obtain a faculty position at a major university. “Geneseo has provided me with multiple opportunities for research as an undergraduate, which is not something that all students at other schools get to experience,” said Levinn. “I think that has played a large part in my college experience. Being able to test the waters with research has really redirected my overall career goals.” Among other activities, Levinn is a member of the Golden Key Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and Gamma Sigma Epsilon chemistry honor society. She also is president of the Geneseo Chemistry/Biochemistry Club and is captain of the indoor and outdoor track and field teams. In addition, she is an emergency medical technician (basic) for the Geneseo First Response emergency medical service team.

TRANSFORMATION.... IN TIME OF WAITING As the Reformed Churches at Stuyvesant and Nassau move along in dedicating worship to the Acts of the Apostles, they come to Saul’s transformation on the road to Damascus. It was while Saul had been empowered to round up the followers of Jesus and extradite them to Jerusalem for trial, that he was blinded and stopped in his footsteps by a voice which he identified as that of Jesus, asking, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” Saul (later called Paul) was led to the city, stopped his former mission, and waited. He waited three daysblind, not eating or drinking; then a godly disciple of Damascus, called Ananias, to whom God made known the conversion of Saul, baptized him and restored his sight. Once he could see, Saul’s transformation from persecutor to pro claimer in Christ was complete. Join us and come to understand that each of us may need to wait, wait and give up our comfort, wait, as God changes us into the person he wants us to become in service to him. The Stuyvesant Reformed Church worships at 9 a.m. in its sanctuary where Church St. meets Route 9J, in the hamlet of Stuyvesant. The Nassau Reformed Church worships at 11 a.m. in its chapel at the Church-School-Building, 43 Church Street (Rte. 20), Nassau.

There are two community clean-ups planned for the Papscanee Island Nature Preserve in April, and residents are invited to join the organizations already committed to the effort, Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid announced. The clean-ups will take place on April 19 and April 27 at the southern entrance to the Preserve, located off Staats Island Road, off State Route 9J. The April 19 clean-up will run from 1:30 to 4 p.m. and will include employees of Siemens, an energy company providing energy performance services to the county. The April 27 clean-up will feature an area geocaching group, and the time will be determined but is expected to kick-off in the morning. Geocaching is a relatively new activity where participants use GPS (global positioning devices) to hide and seek containers. Participants in the clean-up are asked to bring gloves and dress appropriately for the weather. For more information regarding the clean-up, please call the legislative offices at 270-2880.

LET’S DO SOME MATH Letter to the Editor: Let’s do some math, re: the recent hike in the state minimum wage. The number of Democrats elected to the State Senate - 33 The number of Republicans elected to the State Senate - 30. The number of Senators who said they supported raising the minimum wage right away to $9 an hour. 32. A majority. The percentage of New York voters who supported raising the minimum wage - 80%. A majority of whom wanted a raise closer to $10 than to $9. Republican voters by 2 to 1 wanted a minimum wage hike. Then how did we come up with a minimum wage hike of only $8 an hour this year? Senator Jeff Klein. And his IDC group. 5 Democrats who gave power to the minority Republicans in order to make “democracy work” better. How much money will low-income workers lose by delaying the minimum wage hike to $9 an hour over three years - and then no indexing? $1.2 billion. Maybe more. Money that could have been used to feed their family. Or pay the landlord or utility company. Or buy clothes. And tip workers were dropped. They now have to wait for the Labor Department to rule on a new wage order. Republican Senators wanted a subminimum wage for young workers. No one else did. So what did the other three men in the back room agree to: the first tax credit in the US to subsidize employers - including Walmart, McDonalds and Burger King - if they hire young workers at the minimum wage. The cost to taxpayers: $20 to $40 million a year - or more. No one really knows. But it creates incentives for employers to increase the number of low wage jobs that it fills with teenagers paid exactly the minimum wage rate. What does Sen. Klein get as a reward for his new math? A bigger office, a higher lulu. This is not how democracy is supposed to work. ~ Mark A. Dunlea, Executive Director Hunger Action Network of NYS Editors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

RENSSELAER COUNTY KICKS OFF NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK 2013 The Rensselaer County Department of Health (RCDOH) is leading an effort with community organizations to assess the health of residents as well as the effectiveness of the programs and services provided through the public health system. The review is focused on County residents’ mental health and affliction with chronic diseases and its kickoff coincides with Public Health Week. In order to assess the County’s overall health status, as well as to tailor health initiatives toward the unique needs of the Rensselaer County community, a survey is being offered to all residents who are 18 years of age and older. The survey is available online at www.surveymonkey.com/s/renscohealth or by calling the County Health Department at (518) 270-2655 in order for a paper copy to be sent to you. Nationwide statistics show that seven out of ten deaths each year are from chronic diseases. Heart disease, cancer and stroke account for more than 50% of all deaths each year. Tobacco use, poor nutrition, physical activity, and substance abuse are all behaviors strongly associated with chronic diseases. Mental disorders are among the most common and costly conditions in United States. Effective treatments can reduce their prevalence and decrease their negative effects on other health conditions. Nationwide statistics show that an estimated 26% of Americans age 18 and older suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. Almost half (46%) of the U.S. adult population will suffer from a mental disorder in their lifetime. “I urge all residents to participate in this survey as the information gathered can prove to be extremely useful as the County’s Health Department works to establish programs that will help improve the health of all residents,” said Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino.

RENSSELAER COUNTY CLERK RETURNS RECORD SURPLUS TO COUNTY COFFERS Rensselaer County Clerk Frank J. Merola reports that the Rensselaer County Clerk’s office has posted the largest revenue surplus to date, returning close to $1,000,000.00 to county coffers for FY 2012. The Clerk’s office reported a record 2012 revenue of $2,945,012.00 against expenditures of $1,964,000 for a surplus totaling $981,012.00. County officials will use this surplus revenue to offset any potential increases in the county tax rate which has risen due to explosive increases in state mandated programs such as Medicaid. “As a former businessman, the bottom line was finishing in the black every year. A company or a government that continually operates at a deficit will not be in business for very long. Mr. Merola said, “I am extremely pleased that my department is able to return a sizable surplus to the county coffers despite the challenging economic times. More importantly, our expenses declined $40,000 from 2011-2012. I am confident that we will continue to return surplus revenue for years to come. In the past seven years, the Clerk’s office has returned surplus revenues totaling over $3.7 million dollars to the general fund. The past three years have seen over $2.2 million returned to the county. This is a result of aggressive revenue enhancement programs such as the very successful RENEW RENSSELAER motor vehicle and passport program which has dramatically increased the number of passports processed by the Rensselaer County Clerk’s office. Mr. Merola also credits an outstanding DMV department, and an aggressive DMV outreach program that has attracted significant auto dealer business to Rensselaer County and significantly increased DMV revenue. The photo ID program instituted by Mr. Merola in 2006 has proved to be extremely popular, with residents all over the Capital District coming to Rensselaer County for photo ID. “Like many other departments in County government we are doing more with less. Mr. Merola said, “Our courteous and efficient service has given our office the well deserved reputation as the most customer friendly Clerk’s office in the capital region. These next few years may prove challenging as a result of the economic downturn, but I am confident that we will continue to return needed money to the County for the benefit of our taxpayers.
