Judge Hathorne (Jim Holmes), Deputy Governor Danforth (Patrick Quinn), and Reverend Hale (Ryan Palmer) look on in amazement. “The Crucible”, a classic story of mass hysteria, comes to Sand Lake Center for the Arts. Written by Arthur Miller and presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., NY, directed by Val Kavanaugh and Sue Frost. When teens are discovered dancing in the woods in Salem, Massachusetts 1692, talk of witchcraft circulates throughout the town sending everyone into a panic, forcing them to make rash decisions with people’s lives hanging in the balance. “The Crucible” is both a gripping historical play and a timely parable for today. MESSAGE TO ELMWOOD CEMETERY OF WSL VISITORS
Please help us prepare the cemetery for mowing season by taking care of the following items: (1) Remove all items from the mowing lanes between monuments. The mower must be able to do two straight runs without stopping to move or go around decorations. (2) Please remove all Christmas decorations. Larger trash bins will be available at the equipment building through the end of March. (3) Limit all decorations to the approved items listed in the Rules & Regulations provided when buying gravesite(s) and also posted at the cemetery. Place approved items close to the ends or front of the monument and be prepared to water or weed when you visit. To avoid harm to your decoration and monuments, we do not trim or mow too closely. If you need a copy of the R & R’s, or wish to request an exception to the posted items, you may write the Elmwood Cemetery Association at P.O. Box 415, West Sand Lake, NY 12196. Items that are not listed as approved (or on file as written exceptions) will be removed at the time of annual Spring cleanup. It is gratifying to see the cemetery has many visitors. As someone who cares, will you consider becoming a Trustee? We do need additional volunteers. The only “requirements” are that you care about the Elmwood of today and of the future. On Sunday, March 11th, at 9:30 am, Center Brunswick United Methodist Church will host the Rev. Keith Hinton and his wife, Leigh Ann Hinton in a special celebration of word and song. Keith is Executive Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Crofton, Maryland, and spiritual Director for Eastern Shore Emmaus. He will be providing the sermon entitled, “The Image of God” and an Adult Class immediately after church called “Why Apologetics?” Leigh Ann Hinton is Betty and Ron Schotts’s niece and the daughter of Center Brunswick’s former choir director, Floyd Haber. She is also the former college roommate of our organist, Dianna Parisi. Most importantly, she has just retired after 20 years of service to our nation as musical vocalist, first for the United States Navy Band and then for the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own”. Leigh Ann has used her glorious voice to represent the United States all over the world and has sung at most of the annual national patriotic celebrations in Washington, D.C. for the past generation. Crafting continues on Wednesdays at 10:00. We have been asked to make hats and scarves for seafarers who spend 6-9 months a year at sea. They are served by the Seafarer Center, Port of Albany. Stations of the Cross will be on Wednesday, March 14, at 5:00. We will share a lite supper before Bible Study which follows at 6:00. Thursday’s Bible Study will be at 1:30. The Library will be hosting local artist, Christine Levy, who will demonstrate the ancient art of pysanky, a Ukrainian craft and tradition that involves the intricate and detailed decorating of Easter eggs using wax resist and dyes. The demonstration/ lecture will show participants how pysanky are made and will give an overview of the history and rich symbolism of pysanky. A second generation Ukrainian-American, Christine has been working with pysanky for over 40 years. She learned the intricate craft from her family and from her Church where classes were taught. She now teaches pysanky in many local venues including the Ukrainian Church, art centers, schools, and community centers. The pysanky are not only beautiful creations, they are also sacred expressions of uplifting spirituality! Come and see what this ancient and beautiful art is all about! AVERILL PARK CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT The Averill Park Central School District's Board of Education, in recognition of the commitment made by the community’s veterans to serve our Country, voted unanimously to adopt the Cold War Veterans tax exemption. This exemption applies to honorably-discharged veterans who served during Cold War, which is defined as the period from September 2, 1945 through December 26, 1991. This exemption emulates the Alternative Veterans exemption, which recognizes the sacrifice of those veterans who served during war-time periods and which was previously adopted by the Board of Education. Once upon a time in America, families gathered around the radio to listen to the news of the day, thrill to the adventures of heroes and heroines and hear the crack of the bat as the Yankees won another game. The Esquatak Historical Society will present Ron Gabriele and his “History of Old Time Radio” on Friday, March 16th. Filled with the original sounds of long-ago radio broadcasts and illustrated with the personalities and advertisers of the day, those memories will come flooding back for some and for others tell a fascinating story of technology and advertising that grew up right in our own backyard. I believe staying in touch with constituents is an important part of serving in elective office. This monthly report is an example of my commitment to keeping residents informed of the activities of the Schodack Town Board. All meetings of the Town Board can be viewed live or at a later date on my Facebook Page at www. facebook.com/TRexForSchodack. In February, Jill Falchi of the Capital District Regional Planning Commission gave a presentation on the Clean Energy Communities Program. Local governments in New York State can use the program to implement clean energy actions, save energy costs, and improve the environment. To earn a Clean Energy Community designation and qualify for grant funding, a municipality must meet certain criteria such as clean energy upgrades, solarizing, and energy code enforcement training. There is currently a vacancy on the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals. The ZBA renders decisions on requests for variances when an application has been found inconsistent with the town’s zoning law. Interested candidates should send a resume to Schodack Town Hall. I believe the work of a Town Board member goes beyond attending meetings and casting votes on resolutions. To me, it is also important to be actively engaged in our community, attending events, and supporting local organizations and good causes. I enjoyed viewing the work of Castleton artists Katherine Ashby, Ben Karis-Nix, Rachael Kerner, and Mia Powers at the Fort Orange Brewing Art Show. Congratulations on a successful event and thank you for sharing your extraordinary talents with the community. It was a busy month attending pizza and wing nights at the Schodack Valley and East Schodack Fire Companies, Friday Fish Fry at South Schodack Fire Department, First Sunday Breakfast at the Castleton Fire Company, Spaghetti Dinner at Love Lutheran Church, and Chicken Parmigiana Dinner at Emmanuel Reformed Church. These wonderful community events provide residents with the opportunity to come together and enjoy great food at an affordable price. Thank you to the volunteers who make these events possible. Congratulations to Maple Hill junior Trent Svingala on becoming a New York State wrestling champion for the second straight year!

From elegant mansions to immigrant slums, this drama of ambition and betrayal, of bigotry and oppression plays against the backdrop of industrial America while the Victorian age darkens. Letter to the Editor: NØPIATES Committee is a group of dedicated local community members who are committed to raising addiction awareness. Additionally, they provide educational events that focuses on prevention, awareness and overall wellness. That being said, on February 5th, the NØPIATES Committee members unanimously voted to support a proposed law being considered by the Rensselaer County Legislature to raise the minimum legal sales age for all tobacco products from 18 to 21. Evidence shows that Tobacco 21 significantly reduces the accessibility of tobacco products to high school students. High school students under the age of 18 often rely on social sources as their access point for tobacco products. Raising the minimum age to 21 removes this social source of tobacco, delaying or preventing smoking initiation. The ages of 18–21 are a crucial period, in which tobacco experimentation that can lead to daily use and can lead to tobacco addiction; 95 percent of current smokers report that they started using tobacco before age 21. Therefore, in support of our community, especially our youth, NØPIATES Committee supports Tobacco 21, and urges the Rensselaer County Legislature to pass this local law and help us to better protect our youth. ~ Submitted by Kim Murdick

DOG OWNERS. . . IT’S THE LAW!
New York State Law requires all dogs to be licensed annually. The State requires that all Town Clerks’ office process them in their local municipality. Before a license can be issued or renewed, current proof of rabies vaccination must be provided. The Rensselaer County Health Department requires all dogs three months of age or older to be vaccinated for rabies. This information is crucial for the general public's well-being. In addition, proof of spaying or neutering must be presented if applicable. The fee for a neutered/spayed dog in Sand Lake is $8.00 annually. The fee for a dog that is not neutered or spayed is $11.00 annually. Dog owners who do not respond to the renewal notice will be contacted by the Clerk's office. In the event that the dog owner does not respond after several delinquency notices and subsequent followup phone calls, their name is forwarded to the Animal Control Officer for further action. The Animal Control Officer visits the residence for final compliance. If no attempt is made to license the dog after all these procedures, the dog owner can be ticketed and/

Congratulations you have cats! NYS Agriculture and Markets law defines cats as "companion animals". Article 21 sec 2141 requires them to have rabies vaccinations. Cats are also covered in Article 26, the animal cruelty/neglect law. You may be putting food out for them thinking you have no further responsibility that may not be the case. If you are maintaining companion animals on your property with no protection from the elements, no rabies vaccinations and no vet care this is a violation of law. Greetings and best wishes. In a continuing effort to keep residents informed and aware of my activities, I submit to them this summary of my report for February of 2018. As always, the full report can be found on the Town’s website or its social media pages by searching for Town of Schodack on Facebook or Twitter. On February 3rd, I had the honor to attend a service to celebrate the life of Ray Lemka. Mr. Lemka was a pillar to our town and communities. I want to extend my condolences to his family and friends, and indeed our entire community. A point of concern I heard during campaigning was the need for growth in our town while still preserving its character so many who live here appreciate. I’ve been pleased with the response and commitment I’ve gotten from various business groups and elected officials in regards to working together to help meet that goal. In the meantime, I’ve had some very preliminary discussions with possible developers, and look forward to presenting any information I have when these become more formalized. A large part of my life was spent in law enforcement and volunteering for fire and ambulance services. This is why I’m always happy to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the men and women in our emergency services and assist them however possible. It’s been my honor to attend several installation banquets over the past month for various fire and ambulance departments that cover our town. Additionally, I was proud to work with Chief Belardo and the Schodack Police to reopen our Town shooting range after 10 years. Lastly, I recently attended the annual New York State Association of Towns conference. This conference offered classes and networking opportunities with fellow supervisors from across the state. As a new supervisor, events like this allow me to gain skills that improve my ability to best serve our residents. J. RAUB-SCOTT PROMOTED to MASTER SGT. in NY ARMY NATIONAL GUARD
Castleton resident Jennifer Raub-Scott, a veteran of Iraq was promoted to master sergeant during a ceremony held at the Scotia Glenville Armed Forces Reserve Center in Glenville, N.Y. on February 11th, 2018. Raub-Scott enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in March of 1998 as a paralegal specialist. Her first unit of assignment was Headquarters and Support Company, 204th Engineer Battalion. After a short break in service in 2004, she re-enlisted again in early 2005, and became an intelligence analyst. She served again in the 204th Engineer Battalion until 2009, when she transferred to the 501st Ordnance Battalion where she served as a Tech Intel Analyst. From 2010 to 2011, she deployed to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn. Upon redeployment, she transferred to the Intel and Sustainment Company, 42nd Infantry Division in 2012, where she served as a senior intelligence sergeant. Raub-Scott's next assignment will be at the Joint Force Headquarters, in the military intelligence section where she will serve as the chief intelligence non-commissioned officer. Raub-Scott's military education include; the senior leader course, advanced leader course, and electronic warfare crew course. Her awards and decorations include; the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the NCO Professional Development Ribbon. Raub-Scott also holds 104 credits towards a Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences from Empire State University. Raub-Scott resides in Castleton with her husband, Chief Warrant Officer Three Tom Scott, also a member of the NY Army National Guard; and their two boys, Wayne and Ben.

One of our most active Parish families has been hit with medical problems that necessitate creating a handicapped accessible home, including two chair lifts and a ramp. Letter to the Editor: Sheriff Russo’s paid political advertisement letter of last week is misleading and avoids answering the serious questions, which many local residents, including myself, have raised with his office, with the county legislature, and in the Times Union (2/15/18) about his desire to entangle our county in the costly burden of doing ICE work at county taxpayer expense. Here are just a few of the problems with his letter. First, the Sheriff repeatedly raises the fear that “other agencies” will release criminal immigrants back into the community. This claim is an attack on our local prosecutors, judges and police. Does the Sheriff really believe that we should take away discretion from local law enforcement and criminal justice personnel who know our community best and put those decisions in the hands of some administrative officials in Washington D.C? Second, his office continues to discuss jail reimbursement monies and his letter even names a large sum which the county has received from working with U.S. Marshalls. Those monies and those agreements - which do reimburse the county - HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH the 287(g) ICE program which many local residents oppose. Finally, the 287(g) agreement, as created by ICE, requires the Sheriff’s office to take on this federal work at county expense. The Sheriff never denies that the county will be required to pay portions of the federal work. Perhaps, the Sheriff’s personal political position is in favor of aggressive ICE enforcement. But we, the county taxpayers, do not have to support his political opinion with our tax dollars. In sum, the Sheriff is agreeing to take on an unfunded mandate at county taxpayers expense while overriding the authority of local criminal justice folks. That is why local residents will continue to demand him to attend a public hearing and answer our questions. ~ Mary A. On February 17, 2018, Rensselaer County’s 4-H Teen Council held their annual Pre-Teen Fun Day event at Brittonkill (Tamarac) Middle School. Pre-Teen Fun Day is a day of STEM taught by 4-H Teens. This year 31 Pre-Teens participated, ages 5-12 and 14 teens, ages 13-18 ran the event. Pre-Teen Fun Day is an annual event sponsored by Rensselaer County’s 4-H Teen Council. This day not only allows younger members to dive into a STEM related topic, but it is also a great leadership opportunity for the teens that plan and run the event. 4-H has been proven to build skills, experience, and confidence needed to emerge as effective leaders and contributing members of society. Many exciting athletic events occurred over the past week! On 3/3, Alana Carroll, Jamie Cocca and Lydia Ware competed in the NYSPHSAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Staten Island. Alana was named the Sportsmanship Award Winner for section 2 track! In addition, Alana became a federation champion and set a new state meet record for pole vault, clearing 13’6”! The girl’s basketball team is on fire! The team easily beat Gloversville in the Class A Semifinals on 2/27, 73-43. Stephanie Jankovic was the leading scorer for the Warriors with 29 points. Stephanie also became the 3rd player in AP girl’s basketball history to reach 1,000 career points! Then, on 3/2, the Warriors won their 5th consecu- tive Class A title with a 79-60 victory over Amsterdam. Amelia Wood had 20 points! Mallory Wood, Stephanie Jankovic, Lizzy Burridge, Kelsey Wood and Olivia Kelly contributed important baskets as well. Stephanie Jankovic was named Tournament MVP and Amelia Wood was named to the All-Tournament team. Now, the team will move on to the regional final on 3/10 at HVCC. Spring sports practices began this week! AP teams include girls softball, boys baseball, boys tennis, girls and boys lacrosse and girls and boys track and field. Have a great week! CCE OF RENSSELAER COUNTY PHEASANT RAISE AND RELEASE PROGRAM
The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is once again distributing day old pheasant chicks for rearing and releasing as a 4-H project. Participants raise day old chicks until they are mature enough to be released into your community. The only cost involved would be feed, time and facility. Members and/or leaders who want to raise pheasants this year need to contact the CCE office by March 12th to place their order. If this is your first time doing this program, you will need to set up a date for a brief training before receiving your chicks. Participants will be notified of when to pick up their chicks from our office; it is the responsibility of the participants to have their chicks picked up by the end of that day. This is a wonderful, short-term project that offers an opportunity for youth to not only be responsible but to enhance their community. If interested, please call our office (518)272-4210.
This week’s Scholar Athlete is Alana Carroll! Alana is a pole vaulter for the Averill Park High School indoor and outdoor track teams. After previously participating in gymnastics, Alana started competing in track and field in 7th grade. She planned to compete as a long jumper at first, but soon developed a passion for pole vaulting. Now she pole vaults year round for the track team and a club team. Alana stated that her favorite aspect of pole vaulting is, “the feeling of accomplishment, joy, and pure excitement right after you clear a height.” Alana maintains a GPA of 97.7 while taking a course load including AP English, AP Government and Politics, Physics, French, Bio Gene, and AP Calculus. She is part of National Honor Society and New Horizons Club, and she also coaches pole vaulting in the summer. Alana will be attending Harvard University where she will be competing in Division 1 pole vaulting. Academically, she is most proud of winning the LOTE Passion Award at the Underclassmen Awards and being able to host a French Exchange Student this past summer. As she heads into her final outdoor track season, Alana’s goals are to continue to jump higher and have fun. One of the hardest aspects of pole vaulting is the mental game. Alana’s biggest challenge in the sport took place when she got a “mind block” in her junior year. “I’d get really nervous at every competition and consequently couldn’t jump as high. I overcame it by realigning my priorities in vaulting. Pole vault isn’t about winning, it’s about having fun and challenging yourself,” she said. Through challenging herself and working hard, Alana has achieved a personal record of vaulting 13 feet 6 inches. She received the Sportsmanship award and became State Champion at this year’s indoor NYSPHSAA Championships. Alana shared, “My coaches are the reason I can jump as well as I do; my family is so flexible and supportive of my endeavors, and the whole AP community is incredibly supportive as well! I can’t say thank you to everyone enough!” We wish Alana good luck as she finishes her final season at Averill Park.

RENSSELAER COUNTY DOESN'T NEED ICE
Letter to the Editor: I believe in our American system of justice. I have profound faith in the ability of our local judges, prosecutors and defenders to apply our laws. Our system is not perfect, but I believe it is the best in the world. I have had the privilege of serving on the board of The Legal Project for many years and have had the opportunity to witness examples of moments when our legal system faltered: a battered woman who came to this country as a teen is afraid to call the police for protection. What if she is deported and her abuser gets custody of their children? Or the immigrant whose visa expired but whose children needed him so he chose to stay and support his family. Yes, it’s true; both of these people are in violation of civil laws. But we are a country of compassionate people. We can see where there are times when our well-intentioned laws turn out to be vehicles to punish already vulnerable people. Last week, Sheriff Russo published a letter in The Advertiser where he explained his decision to apply for 287(g), a program that deputizes sheriff deputies to be ICE agents. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) used to be a department that worked with the immigrant community to identify the real criminals and gang members. Under the current administration, ICE has become a dragnet rounding up indiscriminate members of the immigrant community. As a result, that community lives in fear of ICE and has ceased to assist them in identifying the bad guys. Sheriff Russo, you indicated in your letter that the county is already being reimbursed by the federal government for housing federal prisoners. Why do we need to make a devil’s bargain and get into a pact with ICE? The volunteers at the Church of the Redeemer Thrift Shop work hard to provide a clean, well-organized shopping experience. APCSD HYPOCRISY HAS NO LIMITS
Letter to the Editor: I have read several letters in the Advertiser, about how the bus drivers at Averill Park School District are being mistreated. If you think that the bus drivers are the only ones being mistreated, you should talk to the cleaners. They are expected to clean large areas that are physically impossible to do within 7 1/2 hours they work. They have more square footage in our schools, than they did years ago with less employees. Averill Park School District prides itself on recognizing families that are living in poverty. Last year they had a large forum with Community Leaders from throughout the District to show and explain how difficult it is for the people living in poverty. The Averill Park School District is unable to recognize that the way they treat the cleaners and bus drivers, that they are part of the problem and not the cure. Some of their own employees go to food pantries or are on public assistance. Averill Park School District talks about how large the gap is between people and poverty and who are well off. All you have to do is look at lucrative contracts given to the Administrators at Averill Park School District compared to common workers at Averill Park School District who have yet been offered a contract; let alone a 15% salary increase. The 7th annual Town of Nassau Tailgate Sale will be held on April 28th from 8:00am until noon at the Highway Department, 599 Central Nassau Road, County Road 16 in East Nassau.
