APCSD HOSTS AN INTERNET SAFETY NIGHT FOR AP COMMUNITY On Wednesday, April 13th, at 7 pm, Averill Park district librarians along with special guest speaker NYS State Police Senior Investigator Brown, gave a presentation about Internet Safety. The APCSD Code of Conduct was discussed

by APHS Principal Colleen Gomes. Kelly Schermerhorn from Questar BOCES was on hand to help answer questions. Topics that were covered were: Internet Safety curriculum addressed at each grade level, cyber bullying, helping kids make good choices while on social networking sites, geotagging, texting monitoring software, talking to kids about online dangers, the risks of chat rooms and many other topics. Web 2.0 tools that our district librarians use in their teaching and teach to students were also showcased, (animoto and prezi).

DORI SALISBURY RUNNING FOR AVERILL PARK SCHOOL BOARD Over the years, I’ve sat through more than my share of Board meetings. I’ve watched person after person, be they parent, student, teacher, bus driver, or concerned taxpayer, plead their case before the Board of Education, seeking answers.

I’ve fought for my child and yours, arguing for AP classes, sports, music, and probably any other thing you can think of.

Why? Because I care about the success of this District and its students.

My family is fortunate to have graduated four generations from Averill Park Central Schools. My parents, Roger and Sandy Young, were members of the first class to graduate from the “new” high school. I am a member of the Class of 1979 at APHS. My husband, Bill, and I chose to raise our only child, Jason, in this district, providing him with all the benefits Averill Park had to offer and preparing him for a successful future.

I love Averill Park. It’s been my home for my entire life. My son and I were both fortunate to be educated by wonderful instructors who very carefully molded us into the adults we’ve become. The administrators nurtured and supported us, both as students and as adults.

My dad instilled in me a strong sense of community and responsibility to that community. This is why I am running for the Board of Education. I believe that every member of the district has a right to expect representation from its elected officials. I also believe that the Board of Education is accountable to its constituency. I believe that there needs to be a system of checks and balances in this district. I believe that our first priority MUST be to our educational programs but that priority must be balanced by what the community can bear. I believe that every student deserves the same opportunities my son and I both had. I believe that my 20+ years of financial analysis and accounting experience has prepared me well to tackle this task.

CHAIR YOGA CLASSES The Troy Public Library will offer Chair Yoga classes on Fridays, through May 13th from 12:30PM – 1:30PM at the Lansingburgh Branch. This class is a very gentle format that focuses on alignment, breathing and balance.

Participants will be in the chair for most of the class. Some standing poses will be practiced while using the chair for added balance. The class will end with relaxation and a quiet meditation. This night is one of the key components of the orientation program to Algonquin Middle School. LEGISLATORS RECOGNIZE 104th BIRTHDAY OF RESIDENT

CEMETERY RESTORATION SEMINAR AT GRAFTON LAKES STATE PARK The Grafton Historical Society’s Cemetery Committee and the Grafton Lakes State Park are sponsoring a seminar on cemetery restoration. It will be held on Saturday, May 21st, from 9AM to 3PM. The seminar will be held at the Grafton Lakes State Park. These seminars are hands on ... you will get dirty..... you will learn techniques in resetting stones, cleaning and adhesive repair. The presenter will be Joe Ferrannini of Grave Stone Matters of Hoosick Falls, New York.

Joe has attended many seminars on the subject of cemetery restoration, preservation and conservation in New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Maryland.

Since 2005, he has been a member of the Association for Gravestone Studies and Chairman of the Abandoned Cemetery Committee for the Town of Pittstown, New York.

The class is free, but donations are welcome at your discretion.

SPRING INTO AGRICULTURE DAY Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties are pleased to announce the “Spring Into Agriculture Day” at Liberty Ridge Farm of Schaghticoke on June 7th, rain date is June 8th. This program is open to any 1st to 4th grade classroom including homeschoolers in Rensselaer and Saratoga County. The program will provide a hands-on experience to students to learn what springtime is like on the farm. Educational stations will cover honey bees, dairy, shearing, berries, and planting. A farm footpath will be included which will be an interpretive walk through the vast areas of the farm which will illustrate the many environmental and life cycle changes that occur annually. Of course, life on the farm in springtime also means the arrival of common farm animals which will be included in the day. Projects and activities are designed to fit within the New York State Learning Standards for 1st to 4th grade students. EPA RESCINDS MILK SPILL REGULATIONS ON FARMS Following an outcry from farmers and local elected officials, including members of the Rensselaer County Legislature, the federal government has announced farmers will be exempted from controversial regulations that would have treated a milk spill the same as an oil spill.

County lawmakers, led by Majority Leader Ken Herrington, whose family operates a dairy farm, had voiced concern about the new regulations in February. Herrington and other farmers said the new regulations would result in new and higher costs for farmers already facing poor market conditions.

“This was a bad idea, and an example of unnecessary and out of control government regulations.

It is good that farmers will be exempted from what would have been a costly regulatory disaster,” said Herrington. The exemption of farmers from the oil spill regulations was announced April 13 by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer. “Northeast farmers have enough to deal with, given the tough economy and tough markets. These regulations would have meant real problems for dairy farmers and it is good news for the dairy industry that they will be exempted from these onerous rules,” said Legislator Alex Shannon, Curiously, at the time, Herrington and other county lawmakers voiced concern about the proposed regulations to treat a milk spill the same as an oil spill the EPA denied the proposal existed. EPA spokespeople even made public comments that farmers would not be included in any new oil spill regulations. Herrington pointed out editions of the Federal Register in 2010 clearly showed the regulations to require dairy farmers to treat milk spills as oil spills were set to go into effect. “We cannot help but be concerned that the EPA is now exempting farmers from regulations that they originally claimed did not exist. It underscores our concerns about over-regulations even more, when one end of the bureaucracy does not know what the other end of the bureaucracy is doing,” said Herrington.
