A host of family members, friends, government officials, and members of the Honor-A-Deceased Veteran Committee are pictured following the ceremony commemorating the life and service of Vietnam War Veteran James J. Danaher, Jr. The late James J. Danaher, Jr., a 1966 graduate of Troy High School who went on to serve his nation in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, was recognized

by Rensselaer County’s Honor-A-Deceased Veteran Committee and County officials on Tuesday, October 9, 2012, during services at the County Office Building.

During his service to our nation, Danaher, Jr., performed as an Air Operations Specialist with the 22nd Tactical Air Support Squadron at the Bien Hoa Air Force Base in the Republic of Vietnam between November 10, 1969 and November 5, 1970. It was at the time he was presented The Air Force Commendation Medal.

His Air Force duty also included an assignment as Air Traffic Controller in Bangor, Maine. In addition to the Air Force Commendation Medal, Danaher, Jr., was also authorized to receive the National Defense Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal.

In September, 1973, Danaher, Jr., married Bonnia Saari and the couple raised daughters Tara and Shannon in Wynantskill prior to relocating to West Sand Lake. To help support his family, Danaher, Jr., worked as a sales representative for Genuine Auto Parts and is believed to have never missed a day of work until stricken by an illness that led to his untimely death.

“The freedoms we hold so dear as Americans have been defended throughout our nation’s proud history by the men and women of the armed forces who like James Danaher put their lives on hold and in harms way,” said Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino.

“James Danaher helped defend our country during the Vietnam War, providing valuable tactical assistance to air crews operating in Southeast Asia during a particularly heated phase of the war. He also served as a military air traffic controller following service in Vietnam, helping with air missions during the Cold War,” said Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid.

“James Danaher provided valuable service to our country during the difficult Vietnam years and defended our country’s freedom. We owe he and his family our gratitude for their service and contribution to our nation,” said Legislator Thomas Walsh Sr., chairman of the Legislature’s Veteran Committee.

In addition to Reid and Walsh, the ceremony honoring James Danaher was attended by Congressmen Paul Tonko, a representative of Congressman Chris Gibson, Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin and County Legislators Harry Tutunjian, Mark Fleming and Edward Manny.

THINGS THEY CARRIED: ALBANY AREA SOLDIERS IN VIETNAM Albany Institute of History & Art will present more than thirty objects from the Vietnam War in an exhibition titled, “Things They Carried: Albany Area Soldiers in Vietnam” opening November 3 and running through November 18, 2012. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with The Big Read, a citywide communal reading of Vietnam Veteran Tim O’Brian’s acclaimed 1990 book, The Things They Carried, a collection of interrelated short stories drawn from memories of his service in Vietnam.

The Albany Fund for Education, City School District of Albany, and the Albany Public Library have worked in partnership to develop and design a comprehensive, community-wide Big Read event.

The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien, was chosen from the list of reading selections provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. The Big Read is a program to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. The grant supports organizations in developing a community-wide reading program to read and discuss a single book or the work of a poet.

HVCC TO HOST SPECIAL INSTANT ADMISSION DAY FOR VETS, MILITARY & VOL. FIREFIGHTERS Hudson Valley Community College will host a special Instant Admission Day for veterans, active members of the military and volunteer firefighters on Thursday, Nov. 15, from noon to 6 p.m. in the Guenther Enrollment Services Center.

Instant Admission Days allow students to be accepted on the spot for an upcoming semester. Those interested in enrolling should bring their academic records from high school, GED or college. Students who want to begin the financial aid process should bring their latest tax returns as well.

TROY ELKS 2012 HOOP SHOOT The 2012 Hoop Shoot will be held on November 17th at the CYO Center, located at 237 4th Street in South Troy.

Registration starts at 8:15am and competition begins at 9:00am.

Legislators Harry Tutunjian and Hank Bauer donated boxes of food to the Hope 7 Community Center food bank, and encouraged city residents to also donate to food banks in the city. “There are a growing number of city families and residents struggling to make ends meet. Hope 7 does a great job helping feed residents during what are challenging times economically, and Hank and I are glad to be able to support their efforts,” said Tutunjian.

Hope 7 feeds as many as 200 families. The food bank is located in a church on Pawling Avenue and has seen an increase in the number of people needing nutritional assistance during the recession.

The challenges faced by the Hope 7 food bank are similar to challenges faced by other food banks in the city and the region.

“Food banks are doing good and important work, but resources are stretched thin as more people need help. Residents who are able to help food banks are invited to do so, as the help is needed now more than ever,” said Bauer.

For the last 13 years, former Private Investigator Steve Kulls has investigated and researched sightings across North America, and has observed a pattern of known primate behavior in these creatures, which in turns assists in the validation and research of them.

Join Steve as he discusses sightings, evidence, and research findings, not only from across America, but locally in New York and Vermont as well. Steve will also be discussing his book, “What Would Sasquatch Do? - Using primate behavior to validate the Bigfoot mystery,” and how he came to some of the conclusions in the book. THE PITTSTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY HAS PLANNED THE FOLLOWING EVENT: • November 15th - “Leeches and Laudanum; Medicine in 18th Century New York” is the title of a talk to be given by living history re-enactor, Stuart W. Lehman, on November 15 at 7:30 PM at the Pittstown Town Hall in Tomhannock. Lehman will discuss medicine as it was practiced in the 18th and 19th centuries, bringing a hands-on exhibit of the herbs, medicines, and implements used in the period from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War. He will explore health care as it was practiced in early America by doctors, midwives, and the everyday housewife. He will also talk about the theories, treatments, home remedies and patent medicines of the 18th and 19 centuries, revealing which were surprisingly successful and which caused more problems than they cured. Lehman is an Education Coordinator with the Office of General Services where he develops and presents programs and conducts research for the New York State Capitol. The meeting, which is sponsored by the Pittstown Historical Society, is free and open to the public.

GOING GREEN Today the new thing is to go green or save the earth and energy. So, you may ask yourself what are dairy farms doing to go green; well they are not painting their cows green. Farmers are some of the best environmental stewards of the earth.

They work hard to protect the land, air, and water for their farm, family, communities, and for the earth. Farmers work hard to maximize crop yields while minimizing impact to their land and the environment. Some have even turned to alternate sources of energy such as wind or solar power. Farmers also use methane or anaerobic digesters, which take a gas, from the manure that cows produce and make energy. This process reduces to manure odor while generating power for the farm and most often the local community. Farmers care for the land just as much as they do for their animals. Farms work hard every day to produce a wholesome product, milk, while being the best environmental stewards.

Wagner Dairy Farm located in Rensselaer County has an anaerobic digester, that they installed in the fall of 2010. The Wagner’s operate a family dairy farm that milks about 350 cows and raises about 300 young stock in Poestenkill. They use digested manure that comes out of the machine that has the liquid removed as bedding for the cows and the liquid is then used as fertilizer. Fertilizer is used in their fields to help increase the yield and growth of the plants and cut down on purchased fertilizer they might need. The crops are grown to feed their cows and heifers that will then produce milk and manure. The milk comes to us in the store, or is used to make cheese, yogurt, or another dairy product. And the manure?

30th ANNUAL TROY VICTORIAN STROLL The Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce announces the 30th Annual Troy Victorian Stroll scheduled for Sunday, December 2, 2012. One of the Northeast’s premier free holiday events, the Stroll attracts more than 20,000 people to the Victorian splendor of historic downtown Troy and offers over 100 attractions. Live music, dancing, storytelling, theatre, costumed performers and more are set against a backdrop of unique shops, storefronts and restaurants, bringing the streets alive with Victorian holiday magic. Scheduled from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm, the Stroll concludes at 5:00 PM when Troy Mayor Lou Rosamilia and Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce President, Linda Hillman will throw the switch on a dazzling new display, “A Celebration of Lights,” that will grace Monument Square directly across from City Hall. The lighted display is intended to create a symbol of the holiday spirit shining brightly as it surrounds the Troy Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, which was dedicated in September 1981 and stands 90 feet tall. FOOD DRIVE TO HELP CAPITAL DISTRICT HUNGRY Despite some recent positive news about the economy, thousands of people in the Capital District are at risk of going hungry every day. And, while non-profit organizations struggle to reduce the misery, this year a business you might not have thought of is stepping up to the plate to help.

Working with the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, Valvoline Instant Oil Change is inviting you to drop off two or more non-perishable items at any Valvoline Instant Oil Change service center in the Capital District. In exchange for a donation, Valvoline will give an $8 discount on an oil change.

All items collected will be donated to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York before the Thanksgiving holiday.

“We wanted to help people in our hometowns,” said District Manager Mike Carlini. “There are a lot of New Yorkers who don’t have a family to celebrate with or don’t have the means to cook a big meal this Thanksgiving. We wanted to help change that and we think our customers do too,” Carlini continued.

People who drop off a donation but aren’t due for an oil change can get a coupon toward their next visit.

With about 244,400 people that need emergency food assistance in Northeast New York, the Regional Food Bank needs help fighting the ongoing, and rapidly expanding, battle of hunger. Much appreciated items include peanut butter and jelly, rice, canned soup, fruit and sauce, paper towels, napkins, pasta, tuna and mayonnaise. There are 14 Valvoline Instant Oil Change locations in the Capital District. Locations can be found at www.vioc.com.

Remaining Deer Management Permits (DMPs) will be available in several Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) beginning Nov. 1, 2012, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced.

DMPs, which allow hunters to harvest antlerless deer, are issued for specific WMUs to help control deer populations. In several units, the target number of DMPs was not issued during the initial application period. In these WMUs, DEC will re-open the DMP application process on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hunters may apply for leftover DMPs at any sporting license sales outlet beginning Nov. 1, 2012. Leftover DMPs will not be available by phone, by mail or via the internet. Applicants who previously paid the $10 DMP application fee or are exempt from the application fee will not be charged for this additional application.

Applications for remaining DMPs will be accepted for the following WMUs: 1C, 3M, 3R, 3S (bowhunting-only), 7F, 7H, 8A, 8F, 8G, 8H, 8J, 8N, 9A, and 9F. For WMU locations, check the 2012-13 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide or go to: www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8302.html.

During this extended application period, DEC will issue DMPs for an individual WMU all day. The status of issued permits will be reviewed each night, and as the target number of permits are issued for an individual WMU, they will be removed from the list of those available effective the following day, with no further applications accepted for those units. A list of units with available leftover DMPs will be routinely updated at www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/6399.html.

MAKE THE MOST OF SMALL BATHROOMS Although many people may dream about creating a spa-type oasis in their homes, not everyone is lucky enough to have a large bathroom, much less a large budget for a full-scale renovation.

Small bathrooms may be a half-bath on a main home level or even a full bath, depending on the home. By thinking creatively, homeowners can maximize their spaces and redo bathrooms in ways that bring out their best assets. * When space is at a premium, it’s best to look for fixtures and items that fit with the scale of the bathroom. Although you may want a large vanity and cabinet in which to hide all of your toiletries, this simply may not be practical — taking up most of the bathroom real estate. Instead, look for elegant pedestal sinks that have a much smaller profile. They’ll also help you control the clutter in the bathroom because there won’t be anywhere to hide it. * Use optical illusions to make the bathroom appear roomier. For example, lay tile diagonally to create the impression of space. A

large mirror will reflect the room back and make it appear much larger than it really is. * Select lighter hues in paint colors and accessories. Dark paints and fixtures could make the room feel cramped. Dark colors are generally used to make spaces feel cozier. In a small bathroom, it may make the space feel claustrophobic. Instead, think light and bright and the room will instantly feel more airy. * Minimize wall hangings and keep fixtures smaller. Filling the walls with knickknacks may contribute to clutter and make the space appear closed in. Use decorative items sparingly. * Think about installing a skylight if you prefer natural light, but there is no room for a traditional window.

In these group experiences, children develop skills to help them cope with the losses they may encounter throughout their lives and build self esteem. Through art and dialogue, Wave Riders provides a safe, supportive environment to help children learn.

NYS YOUTH SNOWMOBILE SAFETY COURSE OFFERED IN GRAFTON On Saturday, December 1, 2012, the Grafton Trail B lazers Snowmobile Club and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will host a snowmobile safety course for young people ages 10 to 18.

Students must be at least 10 years old on the day of the course. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate.

The course will be held at the Grafton VFW/Fire Hall on South Road from 8:15am to approximately 5pm. The course will be taught by NYS certified volunteer instructor Jim Blessing. The County’s Department for Youth purchased the coats with money raised during a charity golf tournament the County held this past September. This year 570 coats were purchased from the proceeds of the golf outing and will be distributed throughout the County.

“I want to thank all of the groups and organizations who work to improve the lives of so many in our community year round, as well as the supporters of the Golf Outing who through their generosity allow us to provide these new winter coats to children who might not have one otherwise,” said Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino.

Sand Lake Center for the Arts presents The Whippersnappers in concert on Sat., Nov. 10, at 8pm. Multi instrumentalists / vocalists Peter Davis, George Wilson, and Frank Orsini have played together for three decades with some footstomping, ripsnorting music, including country songs of the 1920s and ‘30s. Their Celtic fiddle tunes & more make them some of the best musicians and performers the Capital Area has to offer. George Wilson is well known by SLCA St. Patrick’s Day Dinner attendees for his generosity over the years as a provider of after-dinner music.

Circle Theatre Players will hold auditions for a March, 2013 production of John Steinbeck’s classic OF MICE AND MEN at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts. Auditions will be Fri., Nov. 9, Sun., Nov. 11 and Tues., Nov. 13, all from 7:30 - 9pm.

Needed are 9 men and 1 woman. This is an iconic tale of a strong, yet fateful friendship, between two men, struggling for subsistence and hope in rural America during the Depression.

Production dates are March 8, 9, 14, 15, 16 and matinees March 10 & 17.
