L - R: Rensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino, Eagle Scout Brady McMurtry, STRIDE president, MaryEllen Whitney, NYS Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin, Brunswick Town Councilman Dan Casale, (present but not in photo - NYS Senator Kathleen Marchione) Brady McMurtry was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at his Court of Honor, held on June 22, 2014 at S.C.O.R.E. (STRIDE Center for Outdoor Recreation and Education) in Chatham, NY. Brady has been a member of Boy Scout Troop 537 in Brunswick NY since 2007. Brady became acquainted with STRIDE’s Adaptive Sports Program during his Boy Scout career. STRIDE’s mission is “to educate and empower individuals with special needs in lifechanging sport and recreation programs to sustain healthy, active and fun lifestyles”. Brady decided that for his Eagle Scout Project, he wanted to design something that could be used by STRIDE campers and their families at Camp SCORE. He believed that a Disc Golf Course would be something fun and challenging for people of all abilities, and would be a way that everyone could enjoy nature. Brady led a project that required almost 300 hours of volunteered time. He built a 9-hole disc golf course that follows a nature trail throughout the campground. His project required him to design the course, budget for the supplies needed, raise funds, plan a work schedule, and finally manage work volunteers in building the course.

The following are highlights of the July 8, 2014 regular meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature: Sponsored Supporting Legislation to Fund Bridge Repairs - Recognizing the impact that the closure of the Spring Avenue Bridge has had on the safety and economic well-being of county motorists, the City of Troy Legislators sponsored legislation calling for support of Senator Charles Schumer’s proposed amendment to the Federal Transportation Bill. This amendment would increase New York State’s annual funding for off-system bridge repairs by $50 million, allowing for much needed repairs to the area’s 56 obsolete bridges. The bill passed with unanimous support. Authorized Elevator Maintenance - In the interests of protecting the safety and security of the county’s residents and especially its senior citizens, the Legislature approved a new maintenance contract for elevators at the Troy Senior Center, County Courthouse, and Ned Pattison Government Center. Adopted a Budget for HVCC- In a bipartisan effort, the Legislature approved and adopted the Hudson Valley Community College operating budget for the period of September 1, 2014 and concluding August 31, 2015. As the sponsor of HVCC, the County of Rensselaer will contribute $4,475,900 to their budget which will carry no tax increase to County residents. The total proposed operating budget for the 2014-15 school year is $110,150,437. Tuition rates will remain the same. Urged Governor Cuomo to Find New Funds to Fight Heroin Epidemic- The Legislature implored the Governor’s office to reinstate the IMPACT grant, which provided funds to the sheriff’s department to combat the abuse of heroin in the county. The grant was recently phased out and replaced with a Gun-Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) grant, which allocates funds to address gun violence instead of the heroin epidemic. Next Meeting- The Rensselaer County Legislature will hold its next meeting Tuesday, August 12th, at 5:30 PM in the Legislative Chambers located on the 3rd Floor of the Ned Pattison Government Center, 1600 7th Avenue, Troy.

LANDSCAPING WITH HERBS AND FLOWERS Master Gardener and Interior Designer Denise Maurer will be presenting a workshop entitled, Landscaping with Herbs and Flowers on Saturday, July 19th, at 10:30AM at the Troy Public Library’s Lansingburgh Branch. Yes, it’s different....and a bit outside the box. But just imagine the stunning combinations you’ll create by marrying herbs and flowers in your garden. In this class you’ll learn how to mix and match, what to consider while planning your garden, tips on soil preparation and how to pick the perfect site. You’ll see that using herbs in an ornamental role will grace your garden with additional texture, color and fragrance. And don’t forget fresh herbs have many culinary and medicinal benefits. This unique approach is perfect for those gardeners who are thinking “smaller” or just want to shake things up a bit. This program is free and open to the public. Please make reservations by calling the library at 235-5310 or register online at www.thetroy library.org. The Troy Public Library’s Lansingburgh Branch is located at 27 114th Street, Troy, NY.
