Sister Patricia Lynch, RSM received the recognition during “A Taste of Mercy” annual fund-raising gala recently held to celebrate “Catherine’s Circle of Friends, Continuing the Mercy Tradition…” The gala was to benefit Circles of Mercy and to honor Sister Penny, who has been a Sister of Mercy for 55 years. Sister has shared her time, talent and treasure, providing the works of mercy in the field of elementary education and administration. EXTENSION SEEKS CANDIDATES FOR MASTER GARDENER TRAINING
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County is seeking candidates for the Master Gardener training course. Master Gardeners are volunteers who provide gardening assistance to the community in many ways. Master Gardeners learn about gardening and the environment, then pass along their knowledge by teaching classes, conducting educational projects, participating in community beautification efforts, and much more. RENSS. CO.SUMMER ACTIVITY GUIDE
A guide listing summer activities, concerts and events in Rensselaer County is now being distributed, announced County Executive Steve McLaughlin. The Rensselaer County Summer Activity Guide was initiated by McLaughlin to give a listing of attractions that add to quality of life in the county, and also, hopefully boost tourism efforts. “Rensselaer County has so many great events and activities in the summer. We want to do the best we can to get the word out about these events to residents and folks from throughout the region,” said McLaughlin. “We want the summer of 2018 to be a great one, and the Summer Activity Guide is a great place to get started and planning the upcoming warm weather weeks,” added McLaughlin. The guide was formulated by county staff and is available at county offices, including various county departments, senior centers and satellite offices. The guide will be brought to various community organizations and local government offices in the coming days. Copies can also be obtained at the Rensselaer County Facebook page and the county website, www.rensco.com. The Summer Activity Guide is the latest effort by McLaughlin to bring county government closer to residents. McLaughlin initiated the RensCo on the Road events to bring county elected officials, department heads and service providers to the local level. Two RensCo on the Road events have been held to date. McLaughlin also started the county Facebook and Twitter pages to effectively communicate with residents. “We believe that county government should be open, accessible and responsive to residents. We are working every day to improve our connections to the people and communities we are proud to serve,” said McLaughlin. For the past 5 years, members of the Southern Rensselaer County Rotary Club have supported Circles with drives for baby supplies, clothing and the other holiday programs of Easter Baskets, adopting several families at Christmas time, and during the summer months the Rotarians have coordinate and collected school supplies. The completed supply collection is dropped off to Circles, where it is collated into backpacks and distributed to needy students in the Rensselaer City School District.

A gift of time spent in nature can benefit a child for years to come. The Friends of Dyken Pond are proud to announce that scholarships are available to youth and schools for 2018. The Friends of Dyken Pond offer Rensselaer County schools field trip scholarships for a day of STEM exploration at the Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center, covering costs of bus transportation and field trip fees. Youth ages 6-13 can also apply for a full or partial scholarship to attend Dyken Pond Center’s Outdoor Adventure Camp. This week-long day camp runs from mid-July through mid-August and provides age appropriate activities in ecology, wildlife and outdoor living skills. Games, hikes and hands on discoveries will give campers a lifetime full of memories. Join us on Wednesday, July 18th, at the Shaker Trail, Pittsfield State Forest, MA, for a hike. We will do a loop hike over Shaker Mountain and Holy Mountain in the Pittsfield State Forest, near Hancock Shaker Village. Along the trail we will see many historical remains from the Shaker North Family site along the lower stream and the remains of the Shaker holy sites on both mountain summits. Paddle under the Full Moon: Friday, July 27: 6:30pm. Paddle on Dyken Pond as the moon rises over the lake. FREE SUMMER YOGA CLASSES
The Schaghticoke Presbyterian Church of 165 Main Street will offer free, four sets of summer yoga classes once a month through August. Children’s Yoga: adult care givers, children up to five. (Older children are welcome too) Two age groups; 30 mins each. Gentle yoga moves; breathing techniques, animal poses. Thursdays: July 5 & August 9 at 10- 11 am. Chair Yoga Class; Easy chair yoga moves and breathing techniques. Wednesday’s: July 11, August 15 at 9am- 10am. Teen Yoga Dance Class: High energy for teens. Join us on Wednesday, July 25th at the Shelving Rock Summit and Falls in Fort Ann for a hike. We can take a moderate hike up to the Shelving Rock summit for some very nice views of Lake George and the surrounding mountains. This is mostly old carriage roads and about 650 ft. vertical ascent in 1.7 miles. After returning from the summit, we cross the road and head for a refreshing dip in pools at the base of Shelving Rock Falls. The jaunt to the base of the falls is about 1-mile round trip on a mostly dirt trail with a somewhat steep descent at the end. This can be a very popular spot on a hot summer day, but hopefully not overcrowded on a weekday. Don't forget to bring some swimwear, or you can just enjoy the very impressive falls. Beautiful waterfalls are just a short hike away! All ages are encouraged to take in the beauty surrounding the campground as we hit the trail to see the falls. Meet at park office. The Brunswick Summer concert series take place Tuesday evenings at the Brunswick Family Community Center starting on the last Tuesday in June and running through the last Tuesday of August. Grafton – On Friday, July 13, from 5 PM until 8 PM, Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center will host the Stray Dogs for a concert in the Center’s beautiful outdoor amphitheater. The Stray Dogs are the capital region’s favorite rock and bluegrass band. Light snacks will be on hand. Free outdoor concert. Donations always welcome. HOOSICK FALLS SUMMER CONCERT SERIES JULY 14TH
The Village of Hoosick Falls will again host The Summer Concert Series "A Gathering of Friends" in Wood Park, Downtown Hoosick Falls. The Stray Dogs will kick off the Summer Season on July 14th, in Wood Park from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. The Stray Dogs specialize in acoustic rock with bite, showcasing powerful vocals, adventurous song arrangements, and a unique musical sensibility that makes them crowd favorites wherever they play.
YANKEE DOODLE BAND CONCERT
Crailo State Historic Site is pleased to announce that the Yankee Doodle Band will be performing in Crailo’s Riverside Park on July 26th at 7:00pm. Bring chairs or blankets and a picnic dinner and join us for the patriotic and stirring songs of the Yankee Doodle Band as the sun sets over the Hudson River. This event is free to the public. Organized in 1928, the Yankee Doodle Band has played all over the country. Members of the band range in age from their teens to their 90’s and will play a blend of Sousa marches, Broadway show tunes, popular hit songs, and music from the movies. Yankee Doodle has a long association with Crailo. According to a family legend, the poem that became the song “Yankee Doodle” was written at Crailo by Dr. Richard Shuckburgh in 1758.

GREAT REASONS TO ADOPT YOUR NEXT PET
There is no end to the companionship, love and joy a pet can bring to one’s life. That is perhaps one reason why the number of pets surrendered to shelters each year so greatly upsets animal lovers. But the same places that house animals that were lost or abandoned can be the very locations where families find new pets to love. While private breeders and reputable pet stores may have purebred animals that make great pets, to relieve the problems of relinquished or homeless pets residing in crowded shelters, prospective pet parents are urged to first consider adopting shelter pets. The following are reasons why adopting shelter dogs or cats is such a great idea * Well-behaved animals: The Humane Society of America says most shelter pets end up in facilities not because of behavioral issues or something they did wrong, but due to circumstances affecting their owners, such as moving or divorce. That means there are thousands of housebroken, behavior-trained pets just waiting for a new family. * Lower costs: When a person adopts a pet, microchipping, first immunization costs, neutering/spaying, and some vet costs may be covered by the adoption fee. Plus, that adoption fee can be hundreds of dollars less than purchasing a pet from Michael Delliere, DVM elsewhere.
