HOW TO SNEAK FRUITS AND VEGETABLES INTO ANY RECIPE Fruits and vegetables are the building blocks of a healthy diet. But many people do not eat the recommended number of servings of produce. That’s especially true among growing children, who can benefit greatly from the vitamins and nutrients fruits and vegetables provide. Anyone who eats roughly 2,000 calories per day should strive to consume between two to three cups of vegetables and two cups of fruit per day. * Substitute pureed fruit, like figs, pears and apples, for oil in recipes for cakes and cookies. This will ensure the baked goods are moist but with a lot less fat. * Add fresh berries or raisins to breakfast cereals and oatmeal. * Blend fruits and vegetables to create smoothies for breakfast or lunch on the go. * Bake hearty muffins or breads with sweet potato or carrots in the batter. * Mix stewed tomatoes in with your broth soup base to make a vegetable or chicken soup even more nutritious. * Opt for vegetables piled high atop a slice of pizza in lieu of meats or extra cheese. * Replace lettuce on a sandwich or burger with a fresh leaf of spinach. While you’re dressing your sandwich, add a slice of tomato, too. * Substitute fresh vegetables and fruit slices for chips when serving dips and salsas. Kale chips are growing in popularity. * Shred vegetables into a hearty “slaw” and top it with a vinaigrette or a typical mayonnaise-based dressing. * Fruit salad is often a refreshing snack or dessert. Having fruit already diced in a large bowl makes it more convenient to eat and possibly more enticing to children. * Make a vegetable roll-up, filling pizza dough with broccoli or spinach and shredded cheese. * Mix together an avocado, 1/4 cup of cocoa powder and 1/ 4 cup honey to create a healthy alternative to chocolate pudding.

GIVE BLOOD with THE AMERICAN RED CROSS - HELP MAINTAIN SUPPLY The American Red Cross encourages eligible blood donors to make and keep donation appointments to maintain the summer blood supply and help prevent a shortage. Donors of all blood types are currently needed, especially those with type O negative, B negative and A negative. While the need for blood remains constant during the summer, donations drop. Between June and August, on average, two fewer donors give blood at each Red Cross blood drive than what hospitals need. This seasonal decline could be overcome if just two additional donors – above what is expected – give blood at each Red Cross blood drive this summer. Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. Recently, a patient needed 79 blood products after injuries sustained during a car accident. Thanks to blood donors who gave in the days and weeks prior, blood products were readily available for this patient and thousands of others at approximately 2,700 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country supported by the Red Cross. This summer, there are 100 chances to give hope with the Red Cross by giving blood. Visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800RED CROSS to learn more and make an appointment.

YANKEE DOODLE BAND at CRAILO Crailo State Historic Site is pleased to announce that the historic Yankee Doodle Band will be performing in Crailo’s riverside park on July 10 at 7:00pm. Bring chairs or blankets and a picnic dinner and join us for the patriotic and stirring songs of the Yankee Doodle Band as the sun sets over the Hudson River. This event is free to the public. Organized in 1928 the Yankee Doodle Band has played all over the country from Miami to New Orleans to Hawaii. Members of the band range in age from their teens to their 90’s and will play a blend of Sousa marches, Broadway show tunes, popular hit songs, and music from the movies. Yankee Doodle has a long association with Crailo. According to a family legend the poem that became the song “Yankee Doodle” was written by Dr. Richard Shuckburgh in 1758 while he was visiting the house during the military buildup for General James Abercrombie’s attack on Fort Carillon (Fort Ticonderoga) during the French and Indian War. Shuckburgh observed some American militia training and penned a poem mocking them. Eventually the poem’s words and meaning changed and, set to the old tune “Polly Lost Her Pocket”, became the patriotic song we all know today. Crailo is located at 9 ½ Riverside Avenue in Rensselaer, NY. For more information, please visi t www.nysparks.com or www.facebook.com/CrailoStateHistoric Site or call (518) 463-8738

PLEASE ADOPT ME! My name is Tiberius & I’m an orange & white male kitty, about 3 years old. I’ve been a pretty shy scaredy cat until recently, as I was rescued from a home that had too many kitties & didn’t get much attention. But I have been coming around to like all the attention the volunteers have been paying to me. They said I’ve really softened up! Now I look forward to getting petted & interacting with them. I even knead with my feet in anticipation! I’m not a lap kitty yet, but we’re working on it! I‘m looking for a home with a nice person who will continue to help me blossom as the kitty I was meant to be! I do get along with other kitties, but I could also be an only pet. Please consider adopting a sweet male kitty to help make your house a home! As with all Purrfect Companion kitties, Tiberius is up-to-date on routine shots, house trained and neutered or spayed. For more information on Tiberius, please contact the following Purrfect Companions’ representative: Maryann at 331-2221 or at kitties.purrfect companions@yahoo.com. Please use this phone number only for adoption purposes! Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all volunteer rescue organization. We are always looking for good volunteers to help with the kitties or assist at our adoption clinics. If you’d like to donate a little time to these worthy animals, please give us a call at 463-8709. Our adoption clinics are held 12:30-4:00 most Sundays and the second Saturday of the month at Pet Supplies Plus, 1235 Western Ave in University Plaza, Albany NY. Stop by and see some of our other kitties!

GROW IN FAITH! HAVE FUN! CHANGE THE WORLD!

for Kids!

Children ages 4-12 are welcome to join children from First Reformed Church of Wynantskill, Bloomingrove Reformed Church, and St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church for their second cooperative Vacation Bible School this summer. VBS will be held at St. Timothy’s, 470 Winter Street Ext., Defreestville, from August 4th – 8th, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. We will be reprising our very successful Re-New VBS with its emphasis on caring for creation. We have been given this wonderful world, now we must learn to be good stewards of it! This summer, our theme will be based on the elements of creation! Dark/light, water/land, sun/moon, animals/humans: each day the children will hear part of the story of how this great big world came to be. They will engage in themed songs, crafts, games, hands-on science experiments and planting fun to emphasize the theme of the day. Even our daily snacks are theme coordinated. On Friday evening, at 6:30 PM, it will all come together as campers, family, and friends gather for the Big Camp Extravaganza complete with songs, skits, and ice cream sundaes. Make plans now to register your children for five days of Christcentered fun. The fee per child is just $20.00 (scholarships available). Call Marilyn, our director, at 326-5276 and leave a message. Your call will be returned. Registration closes 7/15/ 14. Older children (11 and up) are welcome to come as counselors in training.
