85 YR. OLD VOLUNTEER HONORED as NY’s SALUTE to SENIOR SERVICE WINNER An 85-year-old Troy woman has been honored as the New York winner of the Home Instead Senior Care® network’s Salute to Senior Service® award. Grace Bulger is being recognized for her dedicated community service, including her work at Van Rensselaer Manor. She supervises the rosary prayer group that her husband started, going to the Manor every Friday afternoon and bringing extra rosaries and audio readings of the rosary for residents.

As one of 50 state winners, Bulger earned $500 for her charity of choice donated by Home Instead, Inc., franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care network and contest sponsor. Bulger also will have a spot on the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame on SalutetoSeniorService.com where her nomination story has been posted. As a state winner, Bulger now will be considered for the national Salute to Senior Service award.

The Salute to Senior Service program was launched last year by the Home Instead Senior Care network to honor seniors’ commitments to their causes and communities.

TRI-CITY VALLEY CATS TO PRESENT PROGRAM The North Greenbush Public Library is delighted to welcome the Tri-City Valley Cats to help us kick-off our 2013 Summer Reading Program. TOE-TAPPING CONCERT IN POESTENKILL The Tri County Banjo Band is coming to Poestenkill - on the Green. Songs from the early 1900s will be played. These members of the band have been playing since 1969, all over our local counties. The program will begin at 6:45PM on June 25th. All are welcome - bring your lawn chair or blanket....lemonade and cookies to follow the concert. In the event of rain, we will move into the Town Hall. FUNDRAISER – PLEASE SAVE THE DATE As many of you know or may not know, one of our friends Christine Hilt of our Averill Park lost her home Friday, April 19th, due to a devastating fire causing her to lose everything. She has been so courageous to have gotten this far on her own, but unfortunately she has no insurance to help her. She is staying in a camper parked on her property that someone so graciously gave her to live in for now. She now needs to rebuild from scratch. Many of us all know her to have a heart of gold, which is always willing to help someone in need and go the extra mile. So now we need to pull together to help her.

We will be holding a benefit in Christine’s honor on Sunday, June 23rd, at Nichi’s Restaurant in Wynantskill from 1:004:00PM. $20 includes food, soda & door prizes. ANDERSON CHOSEN as STATE FINALIST in NAT’L AMERICAN MISS NY PAGEANT Miss Nevaen Anderson, age 11, of Troy, has been chosen as a State Finalist in the National American Miss New York Pageant to be held August 15, 2013 at the beautiful Hyatt Regency in Rochester, NY. The National American Miss pageants are held for girls ages 418, and have five different age divisions. Navaen will be participating in the Pre-teen 10-12 age division, along with other outstanding young ladies from across the great state of New York.

Miss Nevaen Anderson’s activities include talent, photogenic, casual wear modeling, spokes model and actress. She also enjoys Girl Scouting, writing, coloring and reading.

JIMINO ANNOUNCES 2012 COUNTY AUDIT RESULTS Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino recently reported the results of the County’s 2012 independent audit conducted by Drescher and Malecki LLP who once again found no material weaknesses in internal controls or accounting practices. Drescher and Malecki LLP also pointed to the continued improvement of its fiscal position even in the tough financial times. Through strict cost controls, and even in light of unanticipated expenses, including the costs associated with the voter fraud trial, as well as the Hudson River Black River Regulating District ruling, the County still saved 3.3 million in 2012. Those funds will be used to increase the unassigned fund balance by $300,000, as well as reserve of $3 million for expected pension costs and Medicaid cost increases. The audit noted the continued improvement of the unassigned fund balance, i.e. rainy day fund, has grown to $10.5 million.

“Day in and day out my department heads are tasked with providing the services our residents depend on as economically and efficiently as possible to ensure that should the state decide to shift another one of their expenses our way, as they all too often do, we are better able to maintain local services.

The County’s improved fiscal position, while maintaining the ability to provide the non-mandated local services, such as those to pave, plow, and patrol our highways, as well as our senior and veterans programs are the result of my administration’s actions in making the tough decisions to maintain a stable and affordable tax rate. This is a task made extremely difficult when considering that 89 cents of every local tax dollar we collect is consumed by state and federal mandates,” said Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino.

Kyle Franklin is the 2013 Scholarship recipient of the Speigletown District Volunteer Fire Company. Kyle submitted his application to the fire company and in his essay stated he would like to pursue a career as a professional fireman. Kyle is currently an active fireman with the department and comes from a long line of firefighters in his family. Kyle will be attending Mohawk Valley Community College to attend classes in the Fire Protection curriculum and then proceed to the Utica Fire Academy.

The following are highlights of the June 11, 2013 regular meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature: Legislature acknowledges Military Active Duty – Compelled by the significant number of armed forces’ personnel activated for prolonged service and recognizing the significance of HVCC employees’ service and sacrifice to our country, the Rensselaer County Legislature voted to award two weeks paid vacation to our returning servicemen and women from active duty in a combat zone.

Youth to Youth conference – Acknowledging that the key to future successes in our community lie with our young people, the Legislature voted to authorize funds for 28 youth and adults to attend the 2013 “Youth to Youth” conference at the University of Rhode Island. The conference seeks to give students the tools they need to affect change in their environments and confront issues most challenging to teens and young adults, like underage drinking, distracted driving, and bullying.

New Van Purchase Supports Seniors – The Legislature authorized the purchase of a new wheelchair-accessible van for the Van Rensselaer Manor. Citing the need for safe, easy transportation for our seniors and the deterioration of the facility’s current vehicle, legislators approved the purchase of a 2013 Ford E350 Cargo Van outfitted for wheelchair use.

The event will kick off the 2013 reunion weekend at La Salle. Several hundred alumni are expected back over the weekend.

JUNE PROGRAMS OFFERED AT GRAFTON LAKES STATE PARK Whether you’re a fan of frogs, fish, or constellations, the programming at Grafton Lakes State Park has something to offer you in the month of June.

On Thursday, June 20th, take a hike along the Long Pond trail on one of the longest days of the year. The outing meets at 7pm at the parking lot at the north end of Long Pond Road, accessible via the Winter Entrance. Pre-registration is required for this program by calling 279-1155.

On Friday, June 28th, enjoy our Star Watch, a free tour of the night sky with Albany Area Astronomers and their telescopes, starting at 9:30pm. In case of overcast skies, program will be moved to Saturday the 29th. Enter the park for this afterhours program via the Winter Entrance on Long Pond Road and follow the signs to the Star Watch.

On Saturday, June 29th, Department of Environmental Conservation’s Fisheries Educators will offer a drop-in fishing clinic from 11am-2pm by the Long Pond docks. Learn about local fish and try casting off the dam with fishing poles provided

by DEC. Both Saturday and Sunday, visitors can fish without a license in Grafton Lakes State Park and Cherry Plain State Park as part of the statewide free fishing weekend.

Swimming is open from 10-6 Friday-Tuesday until June 21st, and then will be open daily through Labor Day. Entrance fees are $8/vehicle. The park is open daily for hiking, picnicking and biking from 8am until dusk. For more information about our park programs, please call Liz Wagner at 279-1155.

KITCHEN CLASSES TO BE OFFERED Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County is excited to announce summer classes available to the community that will increase participant’s kitchen skills, food safety techniques, nutrition knowledge and food preparation range. Classes will be hands on and designed for all ages. Topics offered are “Lighter Eating Made Easy”, Amazing Appetizers”, “Savor the Season”, “Kitchen and Cooking Fundamentals”, “Microwave Magic” and “Unbeatable Breakfast”. All of these classes will be offered in the evening from July through September. A unique offering is our “Kids Cooking Adventure – Around the World” for 6 to 12 year olds. These special week-long classes will be offered 3 times. Options to participate are July 15th to 19th, August 5th to 9th, both from 9 to 11 AM; or August 19th to the 23rd, 6 to 8 PM. MURDER MYSTERY DINNER THEATER “MURDER IN POESTENKILL”

LOCAL STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM CLARKSON UNIVERSITY

The Poestenkill Christian Church will host a Murder Mystery Dinner Theater on Saturday, June 22. “Murder in Poestenkill” written by Ron LeVan and Kathryn Capalbo will be performed by the Highlight Acting Troupe. Come and help solve the mystery of who murdered Horace Serley, the bank president.

Was it his wife, his son, a long time friend or a bank employee?

You can ask questions of the suspects and help the detectives discover who the murderer is. The dinner will be an Italian Buffet, and the cost is $15 for the dinner and show. Dinner will be served at 6 pm and the show will start at 7 pm. For reservations call Joyce at 283-4728. Reservations are due by June 15th, and payment is required in advance. REC STUDENTS INDUCTED INTO HONOR SOCIETY On June 6, in recognition of their outstanding achievement in career and technical education (CTE), thirty-two students from Questar III’s Rensselaer Educational Center (REC) in Troy were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society. Six additional students were re-inducted for a second year of membership.

The induction ceremony was held at Rensselaer City School District before a large gathering of friends and family. Induction into National Technical Honor Society is the country’s highest award for excellence in CTE. The inductees took the pledge of membership and participated in the lighting of candles which represented each of the attributes of a National Technical Honor Society member: skill, honesty, service, responsibility, scholarship, citizenship, and leadership.

To qualify for National Technical Honor Society, students must maintain an average of 90 or above for three quarters in their career-tech program, an average of 85 or above for three quarters at their home school, have five or fewer absences for three quarters, receive a recommendation from a teacher, and perform 25 or more hours of community service.

Located at 35 Colleen Road in Troy, Questar III’s REC provides hands on programs for high school students in Columbia and Rensselaer counties.

OLIVA CHOSEN as STATE FINALIST in NATIONAL AMERICAN MISS NY PAGEANT Miss Jiselle Lee Oliva, age 8, of Troy, has been chosen as a State Finalist in the National American Miss New York Pageant to be held August 15, 2013 at the beautiful Hyatt Regency in Rochester, NY. The National American Miss pageants are held for girls ages 4-18, and have five different age divisions.

Jiselle will be participating in the Junior Pre-teen age division, along with other outstanding young ladies from across the great state of New York.

Miss Jiselle Oliva activities include dancing, coloring and reading.

She also enjoys Girl Scouting, bicycle riding and playing outside.

Master Gardener and Interior Designer Denise Maurer will be presenting a workshop entitled, Small Space Gardening on Wednesday, June 26th, at 6:30PM at the Troy Public Library’s Main Location.

Gardening in a small space has its limits, but it need not be limiting. In a small garden, the gardener can pay attention to detail. You can keep on top of maintenance, while still having time to sit and enjoy your small garden. In fact, many small space gardens are designed around entertaining and sitting areas. Virtually any plant or garden style can be worked into a small garden space. Learn how to choose your site, develop your plant list and how to use gardening principles on a smaller scale.

CAN YOU HELP A CHILD THIS SUMMER? There are so many low income working families, especially single parent households, in need of financial assistance for essential summer childcare in order to maintain their employment and ensure their children are in a safe environment. Hope 7 is working with these families to substantially reduce fees and is hoping for some grant assistance, but we cannot absorb the entire amount for so many to cover counselors, lifeguard, bus, insurances & supplies.

Our $160 per week fee, for 5 days/10 hrs per day, lunch & snack, and daily bus fees to NYS parks, is very competitive, but still prohibitive for this group. It is the result of a gardener’s hard work, weeds are pulled by hand, rocks and stones are picked out, and hard dirt is tilled to create easy passageways for the root system. So how does God do this when the seed of Love, whose name Is Jesus, is planted in us? One of God’s favorite gardening techniques is telling parables. This summer at VBS, the children will dig into the story about the Sower and the Seed and watch the gardening God at work! (Matthew 13:1-15). Each day the children will hear part of the story and engage in songs, crafts, games, hands-on experiments and planting to emphasize the theme of the day. Even our daily snacks are theme coordinated.
