Cadet Cali Palumbo graduated from the U.S. Military Academy on May 26th. Palumbo graduated from Columbia High School in 2014. While at West Point, she concentrated her studies in Mathematical Sciences. She was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the Signal Corps and will report to Fort Carson, Colorado for her first assignment.
PASSING OF DEPUTY MINORITY LEADER ED MANNY
It is with great sadness that the Rensselaer County Minority Office announces the passing of Deputy Minority Leader Ed Manny. A County Legislator since 2010, representing the City of Troy (District One), Ed was fully dedicated to the betterment of our community. Ed used to say: “The citizens of Troy and Rensselaer County deserve a legislator who will serve the needs of our community and not themselves”, said Legislator Cindy Doran. Ed served on the Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, Rules and Legislative Operations Committee and sat in on all meetings of the Budget and Finance Committee. He was also a member of the Rensselaer County (RC) Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board, the RC Emergency Radio Communications Committee and the RC Fire Advisory Board. Ed also served as Chairman of the Soil and Water Conservation Board and was a past member of the Environmental Committee. “As a retired Troy Firefighter with 28 years of dedicated service, he was always quick to volunteer and help anyone in need” said Legislator Mark Fleming. Ed was a proud, dedicated and lifelong resident of the City of Troy. He was a member of the Friends of 112th Street and Director of the Friends of St. Patrick’s and a 36-year member and President of the Troy Flag Day Parade. “The City of Troy has lost a son”, said Minority Leader Peter Grimm. “He was not only our colleague in the Legislature, but also our friend and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Martha and the entire Manny family during this difficult time” said Grimm.
KEYES SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
The Center Brunswick United Methodist Church is pleased to announce that Tyler Petersen, son of Tim and Carol Petersen of Eagle Mills, has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Mabel and Harold Keyes Memorial Scholarship. Members of the Finance Committee presented this scholarship to Tyler at the Awards Ceremony at Tamarac High School. Tyler has participated in soccer and track and has volunteered at the Brunswick Community Food Pantry. In the fall, he plans to attend SUNY Canton to major in criminal justice with the ultimate goal to become a New York State Trooper. The Keyes Scholarship is funded through a donation from the estate of Mabel and Harold Keyes. It is limited to graduating seniors from Tamarac High School. Mabel Keyes was a teacher in the Brittonkill School system and she and her husband Harold were known throughout the congregation and the community for their work with children and youth. It is most fitting that this Scholarship be continued in their memory and in their honor.

Troy Area United Ministries (TAUM) will hold its annual FEAST! Dining for a Cause on Thursday, June 14th, at Franklin Terrace Ballroom. Private Townsend served in the 5th New York Regiment. The Brunswick Boy Scout Troop 537 provided the Color Guard, Rensselaer High School student musicians provided the music. Congressman Paul Tonko, Rensselaer City and County dignitaries, Peter Goebel who is director of the Rensselaer Veterans Service Agency, NYDAR Historian and members the Daughters of the American Revolution and Sons of the American Revolution, descendants of Pvt. Townsend and reenactors were in attendance. A musket salute ended the ceremony. A light reception at the Rensselaer Public Library followed the ceremony.

The making of charcoal in Rensselaer County began prior to the Civil War and had its best days during and after the conflict. However, the process dates back over 5,500 years. There will be a free public forum about fracked gas, health problems and environmental racism via the proposed Sheridan Hollow power plant at the First United Methodist Church, 1 Gilligan Road, East Greenbush on June 25th at 6:30 pm. Featured speakers include Merton Simpson, Albany County Legislator and Co-Chair of the Sheridan Hollow Alliance for Renewable Energy (SHARE) and Dr. David Carpenter, Director of the Institute for Health & Environment at U Albany who has done extensive research on the health effects of fracking. Governor Cuomo has proposed a new fracked gas power plant in downtown Albany in Sheridan Hollow. He banned fracking in New York State due to the health hazards of fracked gas, but not its usage.
