LOCAL RESIDENTS INDUCTED INTO THE HONOR SOCIETY OF PHI KAPPA PHI

The following local residents were recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Stephen Ryan of Averill Park was initiated at Ithaca College. Lindsay Heck of East Greenbush was initiated at State University of New York at Potsdam. These residents are among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction. Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the Society has chapters on more than 300 campuses in the United States and the Philippines. Its mission is "To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others."

SMALL SPACE GARDENING WORKSHOP

Master Gardener and Interior Designer Denise Maurer will be presenting a workshop entitled, Small Space Gardening, on Thursday, May 24th, at 3PM, prior to the Friends’ of Prospect Park Hidden Garden Tour, at the Troy Public Library’s Main Location. Gardening in a small space has its limits, but it need not be limiting. In a small garden, the gardener can pay attention to detail. You can keep on top of maintenance, while still having time to sit and enjoy your small garden. In fact, many small space gardens are designed around entertaining and sitting areas. Virtually any plant or garden style can be worked into a small garden space. Learn how to choose your site, develop your plant list and how to use gardening principles on a smaller scale. This program is free and open to the public. Please make reservations by calling the library at 518-274-7071 or register online at www.thetroylibrary.org. The Troy Public Library is located at 100 2nd Street, Troy, New York.

Letter the Editor: Twenty-six years in Animal Control, multiple cruelty situations, including some of the biggest seizures in NYS, but I hadn’t seen it all. How about an animal cruelty FELONY charge and the dog being handed back to the control of the individual charged before the case is decided?! Question those you elected! For myself, I won’t work with people for who I have absolutely no respect. I resign from the position of Poestenkill Dog Control Officer. The case now at Rensselaer County Court. Let’s see what happens with it. ~ Catherine J. FASO’S GOTTA GO: MEET CANDIDATE #2

Letter to the Editor: Seven outstanding and accomplished Democrats are currently running for the opportunity to “repeal and replace” John Faso in November. They’ve been crisscrossing the district – the size of the state of Connecticut – for nearly year, meeting voters, listening and learning, and garnering support. In last week’s Advertiser we introduced Jeff Beals. Going alphabetically, this week’s candidate profile is Dave Clegg. Dave Clegg is a Kingston private practice attorney and small business owner who has called the Hudson Valley home for over 35 years. After graduating from SUNY New Paltz and finishing law school, he worked for the NAACP and fought for Native American rights as a VISTA volunteer. He also served as an assistant Ulster County Public Defender for nine years. As an attorney, he has fought for working people – and won -- taking on Walmart, corporate polluters, and big insurance companies. He is a founder of his local Habitat for Humanity chapter and chairs the Ulster County Human Rights Commission. He is an ordained Methodist Church deacon, served on the board of Family of Woodstock and has coached and sponsored youth basketball. He is a Catskill 3500-er. Dave Clegg is a life-long progressive Democrat who will fight for Medicare for All, a fair tax code, and stand up to the Trump / Faso corporate agenda. He has been endorsed by Indivisible Ulster. He has secured sufficient signatures to be on the primary ballot in June and, through March 31st, he has raised $650,000 to support his campaign. Dave Clegg would make an excellent Congress member representing the New York’s 19th District. The Democratic primary is Tuesday, June 26th. Don’t forget to vote: the “blue wave” starts with you. ~ Pete Finn, Averill Park Editor’s Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

WEDDING DAY MEMORIAL IDEAS

Weddings are momentous occasions that are full of happy sentiments. But for couples who recently lost loved ones, an undercurrent of sadness may make wedding ceremonies and receptions somewhat bittersweet.Loss touches everyone at one point or another, but it can be particularly sorrowful when the loss of a loved one occurs close to couples’ wedding day. Even though it can be challenging to acknowledge that someone close is no longer around to participate in a wedding, there are plenty of ways for couples to express their heartfelt sentiments for lost loved ones on their wedding days.* Establish a memory table. A memory table is a place where you may put a photo of a loved one or items he or she may have given you that mean something special.* Play an upbeat song. Invite guests onto the dance floor and request the DJ or band plays a song in your lost loved one’s honor. Perhaps it is a song that contains that person’s name or is a tune he or she just loved.* Keep a memento close by. Sew something symbolic of your lost loved one into your wedding gown or tuck it into a pocket of your tuxedo so you know he or she is always nearby.* Reserve an empty chair. Keep a chair at the ceremony and the reception empty for your departed loved one.* Dove or butterfly release. Symbolize unending love by releasing doves or butterflies in honor of your lost loved one. This can be both a touching tribute and also a beautiful spectacle that couples and their guests will remember forever.

PROM NIGHT DISASTER

Letter to the Editor: It all starts out with the girls in beautiful dresses, boys in handsome tuxes and a fun evening with all their friends, but it all comes to an end with the distress call to 9.1.1. The ambulance service arrives at the crash scene and sends a request to dispatch telling them they need two more ALS units at the scene. They have four serious and two critical injuries. THIS IS WHAT CAN HAPPEN WHEN ALCOHOL IS INVOLVED AND DISASTER HITS. The anguish now starts here. The ambulance workers and firefighters know the kids, the police know the kids and now the parents must be notified if they haven't already and are now on the scene. Once in the hospital, we find that only the driver will recover completely and the others have massive injuries that will be with them forever. However, the driver will pay dearly. Now the blame starts. Who was driving? Why were they drinking? Why did you get in the car with them? Who is going to pay for this? We will sue them? Meanwhile back home, the ambulance workers, police and firefighters that were at the scene have to go through intense debriefing because of the severity of the crash. Your moms and dads are devastated along with your friends and family. Remember, it only takes a minute to make a bad decision; but in some cases, for others a lifetime of pain and suffering. Please use common sense and avoid alcohol and never, never drive a vehicle if you do. You have a lifetime to enjoy. Do it sensibly. ~Bill Dikant, D.W.I. Victim Advocate, Castleton, NY

Black Stained Mulch White Marble Stone ALL ABOUT BEEKEEPING – A RICH HISTORY

On Thursday, May 10, 7:00 pm — Sand Lake Town Hall. All About Beekeeping - a rich history. Part of Rensselaer Plateau Alliance's 2nd Thursday Lecture Series. Go back in time and travel forward through the history of raising honey bees. Depictions of humans collecting honey from wild bees date to 15,000 years ago. Around 4500 years ago, efforts to domesticate them were found in Egyptian tombs of the pharaohs such as Tutankhamun. It wasn’t until the 18th century that understanding of the colonies and biology of bees allowed the construction of the moveable comb hive so that honey could be harvested without destroying the entire colony. Donation $5.

19TH ANNUAL ALBANY HISTORY FAIR PRESENTS: WORLD WAR I – THE ALBANY HOME FRONT

What was life like in Albany during World War I? Join us at Historic Cherry Hill for the 19th Annual Albany History Fair: World War I - The Albany Home Front on Sunday, May 6th, from 12 to 4 pm. This year’s event will offer an unrivaled slate of activities, all free of charge. One key offering will be Dutch, an original play by Krysta Dennis, which will offer audiences a window into the Cherry Hill family’s tragic war story. In Cherry Hill’s bedrooms, visitors will view World War I artifacts, including uniforms, military gear, posters, books, and Red Cross paraphernalia that belonged to the Rankin family, all while listening to World War I music on a historic gramophone player and Edison cylinder player. In Cherry Hill’s historic kitchen, domestic historian Brittney Belz will offer a show-and-tell on what people ate during World War I and how the war economy impacted daily life in Albany. Under the tent, historian Kimberly Lamay will give a talk on World War I propaganda; heritage organizations—including the New York State Capitol and the New York State Museum— will offer mini-exhibitions on the war and other topics; and a live performance will portray the experience of the "Harlem Hellfighters," an African American regiment of the New York National Guard. Meanwhile, historical reenactors will patrol the grounds and share their rich perspectives. Visitors of all ages will enjoy crafts, trivia games, period music, WWI-inspired food from local vendors, and much more! The fair is free and open to the public. Williams has not completed its application in a timely manner, and the environmental review of the project being conducted by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission remains incomplete, as well. Moreover, the application materials that were submitted to DEC showed potentially significant environmental impacts that raised serious concerns. DEC subjects all applications for environmental permits to an extensive and transparent review process that encourages public input at every step‎. DEC will continue to thoroughly evaluate all applications to ensure they do not adversely impact the environment.
