St. Jude the Apostle Church and School, located at 42 Dana Avenue, Wynantskill will be holding a benefit concert and raffle for Joseph Frost on Saturday, April 6th, from 11AM to 2PM. Joseph is a 10 year old boy recently diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) a rare genetic disease that affects approximately 1 in 20,000 people from all races that has no known cure. Joseph and his family are a big part of our family at St. Jude the Apostle and we want to help them with Joseph’s medical expenses that are not covered by insurance and anything they may need for Joseph. Please come and join us and show your love and support for Joseph and his family. Music will be provided by “Project Praise”, featuring songs written by Joseph. AFRICAN CHILDREN’S CHOIR The African Children’s Choir is coming to Trinity Church, Lansingburgh. This world renowned choir melts the hearts of audiences with their charming smiles, beautiful voices and lively African songs and dances. The program features well-loved children’s songs, traditional Spirituals and Gospel favorites.

Concerts are free and open to all. A free-will offering is taken at the performance to support African Children’s Choir programs, such as education, care and relief and development programs. The African Children’s Choir has had the privilege to perform before presidents, heads of state and most recently the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II, for her diamond jubilee. The Choir has also had the honor of singing alongside artists such as, Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, Keith Urban, Mariah Carry, Michael W. Smith, and other inspirational performers! GRAFTON LAKES TO OFFER OUTDOOR PROGRAMS DURING SPRING BREAK Grafton Lakes State Park is offering two fun Spring Break programs for the kids. A Treasure Hunt in the woods will be held on Tuesday, April 2nd, at 1pm and the annual Trout Discovery Program will be making a splash on Thursday, April 4th, at 1pm.

On Tuesday, April 2nd, Grafton Lakes will be guiding adventurers on a Treasure Hunt in the “Wild Wood” and Shaver Pond Trail using a map and compass. Finding clues and animal signs along the trail, your team will work together to find the treasure at the trail’s end. Course requires adult participation, but kids five and older will enjoy this playful activity that starts at 1pm from Shaver Pond Center, 194 Shaver Pond Road. $3/ participant. Space is limited, so please call 279-1155 to preregister.

On Thursday, April 4th, families can come meet the brown trout we’ve been raising since October in the Park Office during our Trout Discovery Program. You’ll learn about how they survive in the park’s waters. If the water has warmed enough, we will be stocking them in the waters of Second Pond. Program begins at 1pm at the Park Office. $2/participant or $5/family.

Courtney Luskin from Rensselaer County, New York, was crowned the 2013-2014 New York State Dairy Princess on February 21, at the Holiday Inn in Liverpool, New York. Having served as the county Dairy Princess since spring of 2012, Luskin will devote an additional year promoting milk and dairy products with the American Dairy Association and Dairy Council, Inc. (ADADC). As state princess, Luskin receives a $1,200 scholarship and will represent ADADC at county dairy princess pageants, farm meetings and a variety of special events. In addition, she will help train new county promoters at seminars and workshops. Sponsored by ADADC, the 50th annual coronation completed the year-long reign of Emma Andrew, of Newark, NY. Meghan Rohe, of Onondaga County, New York was named first Alternate State Princess, and Claudia Hauslauer of Livingston County, New York was selected as second Alternate State Princess. They receive a $700 scholarship and $600 scholarship, respectively. Both young women will assist the State Dairy Princess with training, appearances and other duties.

All three young women were named as speech winners. Rohe and Hauslauer also received top marks on a product knowledge exam. Meghan’s sister, Caitlin, was the 2006-2007 New York State Dairy Princess.

Some 19 county dairy princesses from throughout New York competed in the state pageant, including a personal interview, an impromptu and prepared adult speech, a product knowledge exam, writing skills test and informal interaction with others.

Judges evaluated the contestants on their communication skills, knowledge of the dairy industry, poise and personality.

Pageant judges were Junia Isiminger, dairy farmer from Wind Swept Dairy; Andy Orr, Layout and Graphic Designer from Dairylea Cooperative Inc., and Raechel Sattazahn, Marketing Officer with AgChoice Farm Credit.

The American Dairy Association & Dairy Council, Inc. is the local promotion and management organization funded by dairy farmer checkoff dollars. We work closely with Dairy Management Inc.™ and are responsible for increasing demand for U.S.-produced dairy products on behalf of New York, northern New Jersey, and northeastern Pennsylvania dairy farmers.

DEC ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is now accepting applications for the 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards program, Commissioner Joe Martens announced.

This year celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Environmental Excellence Awards program which recognizes and gives visibility to outstanding, innovative and sustainable projects or programs.

“This year marks a milestone in environmental innovations for the Empire State,” DEC Commissioner Joe Martens said. “As we recognize 10 years of the exceptional work accomplished by previous award winners, Governor Cuomo and I invite the best and the brightest to submit applications about their project’s substantial environmental benefits.”

DEC is especially interested in acknowledging projects that achieve significant environmental benefits through: green infrastructure projects; initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; cuttingedge pollution prevention technologies; initiatives to “green” businesses, farms, schools, recreational, health care and hospitality facilities; innovative wind, solar and biomass projects; creative natural resource/habitat protection or restoration efforts; energy efficiency improvements; innovative education and training programs; waste reduction and recycling efforts; manufacturing process improvements and creative approaches to urban forestry or farming, programs advancing “grown locally.”

Eligible applicants include businesses (i.e., small, medium and large businesses, manufacturing, power generation, retail, agri-business, hospitality etc.); not-for-profit organizations; education, health care and recreational facilities; individual(s) and local, state, federal or Indian Nation government agencies implementing innovative, sustainable actions or working in creative partnership to improve and protect New York’s environmental resources and contribute to a viable economy.

DID YOU KNOW? When people think of outdoor storage, they generally envision garden sheds to house their lawn and garden equipment and tools.

However, if space doesn’t allow for a large shed, there is no need to fret because there are other storage possibilities. Consider a garden ottoman or bench, for example. This structure can be built from wood and then painted or covered in padded fabric.

Store small items inside the ottoman, which can also serve as a table or additional seating.

Homeowners with a deck can construct lidded deck boxes to store patio cushions or any other outdoor equipment.

Utilizing the space under the deck is another idea. Cover the perimeter of the bottom of the deck with lattice and install one piece on a hinge to serve as a door.

ILIUM LITERARY CLUB OF TROY TO CELEBRATE 90th BIRTHDAY On Friday, 4/5/13, the Ilium Literary Club of Troy will celebrate its 90th birthday at our annual meeting and luncheon at the Country Club of Troy.

It has been an exciting year with a variety of programs offering something for everyone. We began our 90th year with Lisa Hoyt, Director of Dyken Pond Environmental Center talking about the working of the Center. Samantha Hall from the Shaker Heritage Society spoke in November about the Shakers; and in December we were entertained by an a cappella group from Russell Sage, the Sagettes. In February, local author, Don Rittner kept us spellbound talking about the many local icons of Troy and his book “Legendary Lords of Troy”. William Staats, author of “Three Centuries on the Hudson River” visited with us in March. He talked about his ancestor coming in the 1600’s and settling in New York; and how his family still owns and manages the home and land along the Hudson. We will celebrate our 90th year with the smooth vocals of April Marie.

Our annual meeting will be held at 11:30 am on 4/5/13 at the Country Club of Troy with a luncheon following at 12:30 pm. At 2 pm, April Marie will perform. Members should contact Mrs. King for reservations.

The Junior League of Troy was founded over 80 years ago and makes significant impacts in our community including the founding of the Junior Museum (now CNSE-CMOST), numerous parent education campaigns, and ongoing support of efforts to improve the health and welfare of women and children.
