This month as we enjoy the arrival of spring after a long and cold winter, I am focusing on happenings with the Highway Department. They got us through the snow, making rounds of the town until roads were cleared and passable. Did you know that it takes them five hours to do one complete round? A couple of times, the snow came down so hard that it seemed like they were never there! The good news is that we were given a FEMA grant to cover the overtime needed during the December storm. Thanks to all of you in the Highway Department, along with the Police and Building/Utilities Department, for keeping our town safe during those storms.

With spring arriving, the annual clean-up has begun. The Highway Department will pick up bagged leaves and lawn clippings, brush and branches. More details are available at: http://www.townofng.com/departments/?page=highway or in brochures at Town Hall and various places around town.

The Highway Department is going green. An energy review was done to determine whether they could use better, more intelligent lighting fixtures. As a result, new lights and rheostats have been installed that should provide both better lighting and lower cost. The lower cost for electricity use will cover the cost of the new fixtures. Solar power is next. The installation would provide energy for electricity for the building. It also would be an example of green energy production for school children to observe. This project is waiting Board consideration.

The town is in the process of contract negotiations with both the Police and Highway. It is a difficult time to be looking at a new contract as we are still dealing with a deficit and very slow recovery. Many projects we expected to be under way by now are still stalled including the malls at the 4&43 corners.

This of course affects revenues and gives us little wiggle room when it comes to new labor contracts.

Many things are going on around town. North Greenbush Kiwanis is sponsoring a take-out chicken BBQ at town hall on April 30th. The Twin Towns Little League is celebrating their 60th anniversary with a parade and BBQ on May 7th at the Williams Rd. fields. Finally, the annual town Memorial Day parade is scheduled for May 30th.

AMS CELEBRATES READ ALL DAY WITH AUTHOR SUSAN BETH PFEFFER!

Read All Day is a celebration of books and reading. Guest readers, (including retired teachers, board members, administrators and current and retired librarians from the Albany Public Library), read to homerooms and groups in the auditorium.

Author Susan Beth Pfeffer was Algonquin’s special guest for Read All Day. She is the author of 76 books and the popular Last Survivors series, (book 1: Life As We Knew It, book 2: The Dead and the Gone and book 3: This World We Live In).

This popular, award-winning series follows two families as they cope with major disruptions when a meteor hits the moon, causing the sun to be blocked and many major natural disasters.

Ms. Pfeffer presented to each grade and held writer’s workshops. She spoke about how she gets her ideas, the writing process and the first book she ever wrote. Many students had an opportunity to meet Ms. Pfeffer and talk with her as she signed books after school. Ms. Pfeffer gave Algonquin students a memorable day they won’t soon forget!

SAND LAKE VETERANS’ MEMORIAL PARK COMMITTEE REPORT Have you noticed all the progress at the Sand Lake Veterans’ Memorial Park? The sidewalks are in place, some of the granite has been hung on the wall and the final grading and seeding is almost finished. We still have a ways to go and we plan on some fundraisers this summer and fall.

The committee wishes to acknowledge the materials, the labor, and the financial gifts of the following: Bonded Concrete, the George Brothers/Increte of Albany, Blair Construction, Scheeren’s Landscaping of Poestenkill, the Averill Park Fire Company, Jeff Patanian and several volunteers. The Sand Lake Garden Club will add their expertise this spring.

The committee is planning a dedication the first weekend of October. It will coincide with a Civil War Encampment near the memorial, commemorating the Sesquicentennial of the start of the Civil War. The encampment is sponsored by the Sand Lake Bi-Centennial Planning Committee.

POESTENKILL MAKET DAY TO RAFFLE CIVIL WAR THEME QUILT When Judy Geise combined her skill at quilting with her love of history, she produced a unique and cozy history lesson. She calls the quilt a Civil War Chronicle. It commemorates the beginning of the Civil War just 150 years ago, and it will be raffled at Market Day, on Poestenkill’s Town Green on April 30th.

Some of the quilt squares are printed with battles and dates; others with songs sung by the soldiers, and the dominant theme is the Lincoln pattern. Judy’s daughter, Christina Gordon, helped her design the quilt, and when both the handsome back and front were pieced, Judy’s friends Betty, Kitty, and Verna helped her “tie it off”. The result is a beautiful 48" x 72" heirloom.

Judy’s raffle table also includes her wonderful Theme Baskets.

CAREY NAMED TO DEAN’S LIST AT LE MOYNE Rachel Carey, daughter of Edward and Linda Carey of East Greenbush, has been named to the 2010 fall dean’s list at LeMoyne College in Syracuse. Rachel is a member of the class of 2011 and graduated from Columbia High School. She is majoring in both Chemistry and Physics.

EAST GREENBUSH HOSTS MASS CASUALTY INCIDENT TRAINING The East Greenbush Fire Company conducted a Mass Casualty Incident training exercise on Saturday, April 9, 2011. The multiagency drill was designed to simulate a passenger train derailment in concert with partners CSX, Amtrak, Rensselaer Iron and Steel, Inc., BullEx and MES Fire Equipment. The drill was staged on the property of Rensselaer Iron in the Port of Rensselaer. Twelve Rensselaer Fire Companies and four EMS agencies participated in the five car derailment scenario. Crews performed rescue and extrication evolutions, with a special emphasis on extrication techniques and proper use of the tools. Five surplus CDTA buses were strategically overturned and staged to provide a realistic train derailment environment. The movement of manpower, tools, rescue and firefighting equipment to a remote location, given the inherent limited access of the passenger right of way, was an important factor of the drill scenario. In addition to the on-scene scenario, all of the active drill participants were provided a four hour training provided by Amtrak staff. East Greenbush Fire Chief Ed DiMartino said “every passenger train heading to New York City passes through the East Greenbush Fire District, as well as twice daily passenger trains heading east toward Boston. With this daily volume, we must be prepared to respond to an incident and provide emergency assistance to passengers and provide fire protection. Our partners have provided us with the equipment and the location and made this MCI drill a success.”

I wanted to officially announce that I am running for a seat on the Averill Park Board of Education.

I was first elected to the Board of Education in 2000. During my first term with the Board, the District faced tumultuous times. We saw major changes in administration, and serious High School climate issues brought much negative publicity to our district. I’m proud that I was part of the positive changes that took place as a result of these times. When the Board President suddenly vacated her position, I stepped up and was unanimously supported by the Board to be the President.

That was a period of time that I cherish. We were a thoughtful, proactive, effective board even though there was rarely a unanimous vote. There was respect amongst the board members, administration, staff and taxpayers that I have yet to see again. It is my strongest desire to get back to that place where we can agree to disagree without being disagreeable, where the needs and wants of our children are respectively balanced with what the taxpayers can afford and where the board performs its role of accountability and oversight without repercussion.

Since being elected again in 2008, I have showed my support of our educational system despite forces that have opposed me for a variety of reasons. Those reasons are not important compared to the decisions that have been made by the majority of this board and administration that affect us daily. The administration works for the Board of Education and I believe that our role, as a board, is to provide oversight to the administration, therefore becoming the “checks and balances” that we expect from our government on any level.

I believe that my experience, both in and outside of the “board” will provide a balance which is desperately needed to operate this district for the benefit of ALL. Voting for me ensures a voice for balanced, affordable education that we can ALL be proud of! TOWN OF SAND LAKE CONVENIENCE FACILITY CHANGES EFFECTIVE 1/3/2011 In order to use the Convenience Facility, all vehicles must have Orange Sticker Permits. To bring items to the Facility a punch card is needed. They are sold with eight punches on each card for $8, $16 and $40. You must use TOWN OF SAND LAKE garbage bags. You cannot use your own bags. Stickers, punch cards and garbage bags can only be purchased at the Town Clerk’s Office during regular posted hours. Your sticker and punch card must have matching plate numbers. REPORT ON GLASS LAKE Joseph Hidley’s “View of Glass Lake” Letter to the Editor: Have you ever been to the Post Office in Averill Park and viewed the print on the wall entitled: “A View of Glass Lake”? It was painted by a local artist, Joseph Hidley (1830-1872), a folk artist and landscape painter who has over 160 of his paintings hanging in the Smithsonian Institution.

Next time you are there take a good look at it. It was painted about 1870. It is a wonderful pastoral scene of Glass Lake 140 years ago. Close examination reveals the residents of the Town enjoying the beauty of the lake by walking along and fishing from the dyke. You will also see several residents fishing from the shore.

On the lake are seven boats, some with up to three occupants, fishing the calm waters of Glass Lake. The houses lining Glass Lake Road are recognizable today. Note how the road passes adjacent to the shore by the spillway, just as it does today.

On the road are two vehicles. One is a stagecoach delivering passengers to the Glass Lake House. This was a very popular recreational attraction for those who wished to summer vacation in the country. These tourists would have access to boating and fishing on Glass Lake with the option of walking the dyke to view the sunrise or sunset over the shimmering waters of Glass Lake.

The other vehicle was the carriage of Colonel Richard Knowlson who owned Glass Lake and the original dam. It is obvious from the inclusion of his carriage that Colonel Knowlson approved of how the locals and tourists were availing themselves of the beauty and functionality of his waters. Furthermore, Hidley panted this landscape from the upper bedroom of Colonel Knowlson’s home since he was friends with the Knowlson’s and often spent summers at their home to enjoy Glass Lake with his wife and five children.

For those of us who are interested in the Rensselaer County that our ancestors knew, Joseph Hidley leaves us a pictorial record of the world in which he and our ancestors lived their daily lives and we wish to preserve.

North Greenbush Historical Notes Jim Greenfield, Town Historian

BITS OF HISTORY FROM SNYDERS LAKE I recently obtained a 1934 article from the Troy Times chronicling the history of North Greenbush. Several items relating to Snyders Lake caught my eye and I wanted to pass them on.

The author writes: “Aries or Snyders Lake, situated in the eastern part of the town is a popular summer resort with about 150 cottages. On the east side of this lake is situated Indian Point, the site of a former Indian Village. The last chief was buried at the foot of a hill on the west shore of the lake, on the Archibald Dodds farm, which was owned at the time by Henry Snyder.

In the spring of 1934, Indian Point was purchased from Sidney J. Miller by the Catholic Charities of Albany which erected six buildings to accommodate 110 children during the summer. Mrs. James Farrell of Albany provided the funds. The buildings were dedicated on June 26 by Bishop Gibbons. Rev. John G. Hart, Director of the villa, was in charge of the activities.”

The other item I found interesting dealt with St. Mark’s Chapel: “located at Snyder’s Corners, it was erected on the Dr. Edward J. Knauff property about 17 years ago (that would have been 1917). Dr. Henry Miller was a pastor of St. Henry’s Church, Averill Park at that time and his assistant Rev. Francis A. Kelley, wartime chaplain of the 27th division was appointed to have charge of the first mission at Snyder’s Corners. Rev. William B. Connell, assistant pastor of the Sacred Heart Church, Troy, had charge of the mission last summer (1933). Negotiations for buying the property were made by Attorney James V. Coffey under the direction of Bishop Cusack of Albany. A mission of St. Mark’s Chapel held several services during the summer months at Lyndhurst Pavilion, Snyders Lake.”

LEGISLATURE HAS HAD SUCCESS REDUCING COSTS Letter to the Editor: The economic challenges facing our nation and state are among the greatest in generations. Members of the County Legislature have recognized the need to reduce costs and have made important progress in recent months in controlling spending.

Many of these efforts to reduce spending have been supported on a bi-partisan basis, most notably, the successful re-bid of the county’s insurance policy. The re-bid will see a savings of $300,000 over each of the next three years, meaning county residents will save almost $1 million on one contract.

The new contract also means the county will be paying less for insurance than the county did in the early 1990s when there was a controversy regarding the then-Democratic county chairman being involved in the insurance contract. The re-bid of the county insurance contract is a complex undertaking and took months of work by legislative staff and the consultant on the project, Compass Consulting.

The Legislature has also been successful in reducing costs in the legislative offices. Legislature spending was reduced by $130,000 in 2010 and by $160,000 in 2009. The spending reductions came about partly by not filling vacant positions, reducing the size of existing staff and halting certain purchases for legislative offices. While these reductions have not met with support from all legislators, the reductions have seen legislators and staff step up to do more with less.

Legislative staff has also been able to reduce costs for the county by supervising an effective recycling program that keeps several tons of paper out of the waste stream, reducing expenses. Along with the paper recycling, the Legislature has formed a partnership with Troy business eLot to recycling computers and other electronic appliances at little or no charge, also reducing disposal costs.

The Legislature has also joined to form a bi-partisan budget task force that includes two members from the majority and two members from the minority caucuses to begin reviewing issues related to the 2012 county budget months before the proposed spending plan is introduced. Small storms are the worst in terms of decision making and I think I’ve called our responses reasonably well this year. Along with a “thanks” for the help of our highway contractor Darcy Construction, I have completed the requisite paperwork and traveled to the three meetings with FEMA and SEMO in order to obtain disaster declaration funding to offset our expenses for the 21" event on 12/26-27. It appears I’ll recoup 87.5% of those costs. Added to my efforts starting in 2005, this brings these program totals I’ve recovered to somewhere between $21-$22,000 for the Village. Since New Yorkers send a lot more money to DC than we receive, I’m very pleased. Regarding the FEMA Hazard Mitigation program mentioned last year, I’ve completed the meetings and paperwork and await a decision later this year. If our County-wide application is successful, we will have access to the percentage of funds made available each time a disaster declaration is made in NY to correct hazards before damage is done. It’s a competitive process, but well worth an answer to opportunity’s knock on the door. My thanks to Rensselaer County Director of Public Safety Kelly Paslow for making this program available. In February, our Board unanimously adopted a resolution opposing a tax cap.

Taxpayers and voters are inevitably drawn to simple answers for complex challenges, but the cost of government is simply intractably tied to government size. We’ve held true to our pledge of a small, responsive operation you voted in on 12/ 29/97 and consistently turn out a responsible budget under $200.K. Do the math- VEN residents’ combined Town and Village tax rate per thousand is currently $1.28 less than the rate for the Town only outside our borders- focused services, local territory, efficiency and devoted officials. California’s Prop.

As the Liaison from the Town Board, I have been working with the Citizens Fiscal Advisory Committee. Just three months into their tenure, the members of this Committee are already making a significant impact. A new purchasing policy has been developed to strengthen controls, and account for funds at the time an order is submitted. I must thank the Department Heads for their assistance and input in making this a workable policy. Organizational charts have been produced and approved by the Board, which provide a graphic breakdown of how our Government works. Notice that the people of East Greenbush are at the top, as they are who we all work for.

Bob Pasinella from the Rensselaer County IDA participated in the Committee’s April meeting. He spoke on the role of PILOT programs in attracting new businesses into Town, and indicated that he sees a renewed interest of companies looking at our area. It was very encouraging to hear of his positive outlook for future development, and especially his comment that he always feels confident in working with the team in East Greenbush.

During April, I also attended a training exercise sponsored by the East Greenbush Fire Company for Mass Casualty Incidents.

Ten Fire companies, five EMT companies and our Police Department combined their resources to address a simulation involving five buses with a multitude of crash dummy victims.

It is comforting to see the amount of training and work our Fire, Ambulance and Police Personnel invest in preparation.

Many residents attended the East Greenbush Library open house on April 16th. I enjoyed a tour of the work behind the scenes, and the reconfigured spaces for computer services, videos, reference material, and reading areas. If you have not been to the library in a while, it is well worth the trip to become familiar with these improvements. ~ Sue Mangold, East Greenbush Council Member

In an effort to assist Doors of Hope with their grant deadline of April 30th, the Curves food drive will be extended through the end of April. All donations will be given to Doors of Hope. The donations will be weighted and the totals will be used by Doors of Hope who is applying for a grant. One pound of food equals one dollar. The United Methodist Women of the First United Methodist Church of East Greenbush will be having their Spring Thrift Sale on May 6th, from 5PM to 8PM and May 7th, from 9AM to 1PM. SMART IS BACK? Letter to the Editor: “Smart is Back”. That’s all there was on that bumper sticker. I’d have had no idea what it was in reference to if the person didn’t have another bumper sticker right below it that read: “Obama 08”. I’ve heard elsewhere that his supporters believe he is the smartest man to have ever occupied the oval office. I’m not so sure about that.

Maybe he’ll release his IQ test results for us. Nah, that wouldn’t be too smart. If we were allowed to see his IQ test, but not his birth certificate, that would surely raise a few eyebrows.

So I guess we’ll have to accept the fact that his academic success is an indication of his intelligence. Well I’m not so sure of that either.

I used to debate a fellow about ideology and politics on a regular basis until one day when he noticed the MENSA membership plaque on my wall. He nodded his head toward it and said: “I have a P-HD after my name. Do you know what that means?” Without hesitation, I replied: “It means you learned what they taught you.”

Well you’d have thought I had driven a stake through his heart by the expression on his face. He turned on his heel and left without a word and never came back. Which I consider a blessing because he used to suggest things like; Jesus’ birth made a good case for abortion.

After he left and I began to think about what my retort had implied, I realized I had inadvertently revealed a horrible truth to him.

Academic success does not convey intelligence. You can have all the “knowledge” in the world memorized but you wouldn’t be able to use it without intelligence.

Intelligence enables you to put two or more truths together and draw an accurate conclusion. But they have to be truths that you are dealing with. President Reagan once said: “It’s not that Liberals are ignorant. It’s just that they know so much that just isn’t so”.

UNCAGED TOXIC LANDFILL MEETING United Neighbors Concerned About General Electric & Dewey Loeffel Landfill (UNCAGED) will be holding our monthly meeting on Thursday, April 28th, at the Nassau Free Library, starting at 6:30 p.m.

This meeting will cover discussions concerning the complex Dewey Loeffel toxic landfill (Mead Road - Nassau) which contains approximately 46,000 tons of hazardous chemicals (various mixtures of VOCs and PCBs). The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has accepted this site onto its Federal National Priority List and will now be the lead in the remediation procedures.

The Hendrick Hudson Male Chorus will host the 2011 Spring Concert season this May. The first concert will be held at 7:30PM on May 14th at the First United Methodist Church in East Greenbush, located at Gilligan and Hayes Road. The First United Methodist church Sanctuary Choir will be guest artists for this concert.

The second concert will be held at 7:30PM on May 20th at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Castleton located at Carney Road. The Maple Hill High School Swing Choir will be guest artists for this concert.

Tickets may be purchased from chorus members or at the door.

The prices of the tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.

STATE COMPTROLLER TO AUDIT NORTH GREENBUSH FINANCES

Letter to the Editor: The State Comptroller will conduct a full audit of town finances. The audit comes after irresponsible charges against the former Town Comptroller made by Councilman Desso.

Desso inferred criminal conduct by the Town Comptroller he fired by insisting on the need for a forensic audit after a CPA firm mistakenly called a town bank account unauthorized. These charges were proven untrue by Town Law which confirms that Town Boards do not authorize individual bank accounts, only the banks which must be used for deposits.

Now Mr. Desso will have an audit he never counted on while playing politics with the reputation of the former Comptroller.

Perhaps the State Comptroller will rule on the wisdom of the Town Board appointing the Assessor to the conflicting position of Town Comptroller until he quit under fire. The State Comptroller may realize that the appointment placed the Assessor, a union member, in the position of providing financial advice on union contracts he would benefit from.

The State Comptroller will learn how Desso used political pressure on the Town Comptroller to delay reports to the State, massage the town’s deficit, and make irresponsible budget changes done in secrecy without any input from the Supervisor or Comptroller. These changes included the use of Highway Department PILOT funds to pay for General Fund spending.

The State Comptroller will learn how political pressure was used in an effort to manipulate the Town Comptroller beginning with the Board’s refusal to reappoint him to a required two year term under law so they could hold his job hostage and minimize his independence. This Board was so paranoid that they even refused to accept a $35,000 State Grant because they didn’t like those who worked to get it.

Mr. Desso didn’t realize the State Comptroller’s Office also reads the newspapers when he leaked the CPA report and inferred criminal conduct. In just weeks, a State auditing team will begin to comb through financial records, many of which were improperly seized by the Town Clerk the night the Board fired him. SMALL TOWN POWER FROM SMALL MINDED POLICE Letter to the Editor: With all the discussions locally and statewide of the consolidation of local governments and Police, nary a word from politicians in North Greenbush about the elimination of the Police Department. Why is this? It appears obvious that being a politician in a small town comes with several small advantages. One perk is the politicos oversee and hire for the Police Department and with its several million dollar budget, the politicians exert some real power with the Department.

Politicians never like to relinquish power.

Is there any doubt when the police pull over politicos on the Town Board, or people who work for the Town, the police give them a pass? When my wife was the Town Judge for four years, I received one of these pardons. Although I feel guilty about this pass, I now feel compelled to apologize for it, and to speak out about this practice.

But now that I have written a few letters to the Advertiser, I have been pulled over six times in the past year alone, none resulting in any conviction or guilty plea. Once I was ticketed for having my high beams on when the only one on the road besides me was my young son and a deer. It is just this type of small town power from small minded police that make the Police Department dispense unequal justice and political cronyism.

Many people have shaken my hand and told me they agree with my letters. However, the fear of being targeted by the police prevents others from speaking out publicly. The Department certainly has a lot of free time.

Maybe taking some videos of the police at OTB parlors or taking a nap in their cars at the dump or little league fields will help this discussion. A wiser alternative would be to talk to the Town of East Greenbush about paying for their police and saving millions of dollars annually on police who target and ticket only those who are not connected. ~John A. RENSSELAER COUNTY DOG CARE CLASSES Dog care classes will be offered starting on Wednesday, April 27th on Wednesday nights through May and June, with the final class on June 15th, all at the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds.

The emphasis of the classes will be obedience; agility and general dog care education. Classes are open to all community residents from youth to adults. Classes to the public will cost $60 for the 8-week course with discounted rates for Rensselaer County 4-H members. You must register in advance by calling the Cornell Cooperative Extension office of Rensselaer County.

All dogs must be currently vaccinated against Rabies, Parvovirus, Distemper and Adenovirus (Kennel Cough is strongly suggested). Classes will begin at 6:30 PM. Participants should not bring their dogs the first night. There will be an overview and orientation to the class the first night, as well as checking paperwork for proof of vaccinations, registration and collecting fees. EGCSD SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM NAMED 2011 CAPITAL DISTRICT CHAMPS East Greenbush Central School District Columbia High School’s Science Olympiad Team competed in the Capital District Regional competition held at the College of Saint Rose on February 5. The annual event included twenty four teams from across the Capital District competing in twenty-two events encompassing various branches of science including chemistry, physics, earth science, biology and engineering. Columbia’s team continued its long-standing tradition of success by earning a total of twenty eight medals in the twenty two events held. In addition, Columbia’s team won the Regional Competition by earning both first and third place overall for the event. As a result of their outstanding performance, Columbia will, once again, advance to the State Finals to be held at West Point on March 18th – 19th.

Hello Warriors! I hope you had a great spring break with wonderful weather. The Averill Park athletes were at school working hard playing games and practicing hard.

The track team had a meet this past Monday at Mohon. The team did very well and pushed each other to reach their full potential. The next meet was scheduled for today but the Penn relays were canceled.

The lacrosse team had a tough match-up against Saratoga but the Warriors put two goals up on the scoreboard. The next game is today at Colonie, good luck girls!

Today the boys’ baseball team has a home game that starts at 4pm. Please come out and support the boys when they play against Bishop Maginn High School. This should be a wellmatched game so get your seat early! The boys also have a game tomorrow against Colonie at 4:15pm.

The softball team has a game tomorrow against Colonie Central High School. This game will start at 4:15pm and is home so come on and cheer on your Warriors!

SAND LAKE DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT The Sand Lake Democratic Committee is proud to announce that the Annual Golf Tournament will take place at the Burden Lake Country Club on Friday, May 27, 2011.

The scramble will begin with a shotgun start at 10:30AM. Registration will be at 9:30AM with coffee and donuts being served at that time. Started as a road runner in third grade, Tyler Wagner has made his way up to the top as a second year runner on Averill Park’s track team. Tyler runs 400 meter hurdles and 110 meter hurdles for the varsity Track and Field team. “My favorite thing about running track is the exhilaration right before the gun goes off, and getting to that first hurtle seeing your opponent in your peripheral vision.” Wagner is also a big participant in 4H club. He is a member of the teen ambassadors for Rensselaer County 4H, and recently went to a National 4H conference.

In Tyler’s senior year, he is taking courses such as: Advance Placement Biology, Advance Placement English, physics, Engineer Design and Draw, and project lead the way. Wagner has decided to go to Hudson Valley Community College for two years and transfer to another college. Next year Tyler will be studying to become a medical engineer.

Tyler says his biggest influence in life would be his mom. “My mom has had a big influence on my life, if she didn’t give me rides to and from track I wouldn’t be doing it today. On top of that she brings me to various 4H events, and encourages me to keep my grades up.”

GLASS LAKE ICE FISHING The Ice Fishing season on Glass Lake was a major success.

Let me share with you some of the postings that appeared on Iceshanty.com, a website devoted to ice fishermen to share their experiences and information.

Special shout out to the two nice ladies who were just driving by the dam, saw the activity on the ice last Saturday, and came out for a nice little walk and took a few pictures. I filled them in a little on the controversy. Told them to stop back anytime, nice canoeing in the summer.

The Bailey Mountain Fish and Game Club announced that its ice fishing tourney would include Glass Lake this year, as usual. I am told it was a roaring success.

Even though its not the best lake fishing wise, it’s better then most and the memories I’ve had with my 3 year-old cousin catching his biggest fish is more than enough to make it a perfect lake.

A young enthusiastic man named Sunfish can all teach us something. Here is a young man who enjoys fishing. Not sitting home or going out destroying other people’s property or just being a part of what some kids are today. Nope this young man enjoys being with family and others spending a little time on the ice enjoying the surroundings of Mother Nature. And then there’s the other side of this thread. Adults who won’t sit down and talk to come to a reasonable agreement to open it or just plain and simply lock the lake for themselves. No wonder this world is the way it is. It’s a I got mine you can’t have any of it situation. Greed (or) whatever you want to call it. Go ahead and take away from men like Sunfish and others who enjoy the outdoors, Lock up all the lakes and let greed take over. When all the kids of this state got nothing to do but join gangs or steal or destroy property, then we can have another discussion about that.

TEAM SPARKLE RUNS FOR LITERACY Team Sparkle started as a way for a group of Rensselaer County residents to have fun and raise funds for a worthy cause. Team member Kristin Morgan is a Literacy Volunteers tutor who has chaired fundraising events for Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County in the past.

Last year she combined her love of running and her dedication to the cause of literacy by challenging friends and neighbors to compete in the 5K Literacy Run/Walk. The result was a 16-member team called Sparkle. This year the team is gearing up once again for the 5K in Troy. On Sunday, May 1, runners between the ages of 12 and 60-something will be out in hot pink Sparkle tee shirts, showing their support for literacy programs in Rensselaer County. The goal this year is for all the team participants to be sponsored runners. Since runners usually rely on friends and neighbors for sponsorship, this is a way for Team Sparkle to cast the net a little wider. “We love the Literacy Run,” said Kristin Morgan. “It’s a family event, and since it’s a run/walk, it means people of all ages and abilities can participate.”

Literacy Run/Walk is made possible by CAP COM Cares Foundation, IBT Global, Fox 23 News, E. Stewart Jones, Stewart’s Shops, Cohoes Savings Foundation, The Record, Aflac New York, Architecture +, Gettysburg Flag Works, and others.

“WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES®”AGAINST RAPE, SEXUAL VIOLENCE In observance of April, National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Sexual Assault & Crime Victims Assistance Program for Rensselaer County at Samaritan Hospital is hosting its 4th annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®,” a community march to raise awareness of sexual violence, Saturday, Apr. 30, 11 a.m. (registration/check-in at 10 a.m., noon reception), at Samaritan Hospital’s Lally Pavilion, 2215 Burdett Ave., Troy. WXXA Fox 23 News anchor John Gray is emcee. The first-of-its-kind community event and fundraiser invites the public, especially men, to show support for victims by literally walking a mile in women’s high-heeled shoes.

Individuals or teams of walkers may participate with sponsors and pledges. Prizes will be awarded to the Top Team and Top Individual fundraisers. There will also be raffles and free massages, followed by a lunch reception. Last year’s event brought out more than 200 participants and raised more than $22,000 to benefit the program.

East Greenbush was recognized by the Capital District TobaccoFree Coalition for leadership in promoting healthy recreational environments for young lungs. At a recent “Tobacco-Free Champions” Awards Reception, representatives from the East Greenbush Town Board were presented with a plaque honoring the Town’s Smoke Free Playgrounds Program.

This program was instituted last July by unanimous approval at a Town Board meeting. Special signage was placed in Town recreation areas announcing “Young Lungs at Play”, and posting playgrounds as Smoke-Free Zones. The Town will be increasing the signage, and take additional steps to promote this program throughout the coming season.

Supervisor Rick McCabe, says the plaque will be displayed in the corridor near the Youth and Recreation Services Office, where it will help to carry the message to residents.

SPRING CLEANING IN NASSAU Plans are underway for a number of countryside cleanup opportunities in the Town of Nassau for 2011. We thank everyone who continues to contribute to our efforts and we invite you to join us this year.

We will once again be offering a Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Day for our residents in the early Fall. We continue to provide an area for the mulching of leaves and small branches and will work with other municipalities on electronics recycling.

We also have again scheduled Tire Recycling Days at the Nassau Transfer Station. This event is open to any resident and you do not need to have a Transfer Station Permit to participate. The Town will accept tires on Friday, May 13, 2011 (11 AM to 7 PM) and on Saturday, May 14, 2011 (8 AM to 4 PM) for a significantly discounted environmental disposal fee of $2 each for car and light truck tires. Larger tires up to 24-5 are $12 and sizes over 24-5 are $5 extra per ply. Tires with Rims WILL BE accepted.

The State of New York has recently announced the STAR exemption amounts for the 2011-2012 school year for Town of East Greenbush residents. The Basic STAR exemption amount is $30,000, while the Enhanced STAR exemption amount is $60,100. The exemption is the amount that your assessment will be reduced prior to the levy of school taxes. For example, if you own a house that is assessed at $150,000, and have the Basic STAR, the school taxes on your property would be paid on a taxable assessment of $120,000 ($150,000$30,000=$120,000).

St. Jude the Apostle Parish in Wynantskill recently joined forces with BOOKS FOR TROOPS, a volunteer, non-profit arm of “Operation Adopt a Soldier,” to help them collect gently used paperback books and other requested items for the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Books help alleviate boredom by offering a less stressful distraction from the daily horrors of war!

On March 5th and 6th, the parish took up a book collection resulting in over 800 donated books and other items! In addition, the Youth Ministry packed the donated books for shipping, the Faith Formation students (grades K-8) made cards and/or bookmarks and St. Jude’s school children (grades Pre-K through 6) are coordinating another book collection and collecting “Pennies for Postage” in May.
