“GROWING BIG IN A SMALL SQUARE” Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County presents the second of this year’s Summer Gardening Programs.

Admission is FREE. Program will be held at The Demonstration Garden, located at The Robert C. Parker School, 4254 Route 43, North Greenbush.

“Growing Big In A Small Square” - Wednesday, July 25, from 7PM to 8PM. There are lots of reasons for growing plants, especially vegetables in small squares, sometimes called “Square Foot Gardening.” You’ll enjoy easy maintenance, space efficiency, and high productivity all while bringing “farm fresh” into your backyard. But how do you start? What materials do you need? Learn from the successes and failures of a Master Gardener who has tried....and triumphed in “going small”. This program will be lead by Master Gardener Don Maurer.

UPCOMING PUBLIC HEARING AT EAST GREENBUSH LIBRARY East Greenbush registered voters who wish to be considered as candidates for election to the Board of Trustees, may contact Evelyn Butrico, library director, for an information packet. There are two five-year positions available in the library’s upcoming election in September. Trustee candidates must live within the boundaries of East Greenbush and need 25 signatures from voters in East Greenbush before their name will be placed on the ballot. The deadline for returning nominating petitions and signatures to the director is August 9 at 5:00 pm.

Absentee Ballots will now be available for the election this September. Voters need to have their ballot requests into the library no later than 7 days prior to the election, August 29th.

The ballots need to be postmarked no later than the day before the election which will be on Wednesday, September 5. 2012.

Rensselaer County Clerk Frank J. Merola has been awarded the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York State Association of County Clerks (NYSACC) at the annual convention held in Pearl River. The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented in recognition of consistent outstanding service the Clerk provides to his constituents as well as being an effective statewide leader on issues important to NYSACC. Mr. Merola was honored due to his outstanding 15 years service as County Clerk where he serves as a tireless advocate for Rensselaer County and statewide motorists as well as the top authority in NYSACC on motor vehicle issues.

“I am deeply honored that my fellow clerks chose to honor me with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.” Mr. Merola said, “No one enters public service for awards or credit, but to try to be of service to the people that they represent. I am honored that my fellow clerks feel that strongly of my service to the great people of Rensselaer County as well as to NYSACC that they chose to give me this award. The past decade has shown the County Clerks and NYSACC becoming a major force in state government with the power to influence legislative agendas for the benefit of the taxpayer. I will continue to stand with my fellow clerks in NYSACC to work with the state to attempt to ease the burden on the state’s taxpayers.”

NYSACC is an organization of County Clerks representing all 62 counties in New York State. NYSACC works in conjunction with the New York Association of Counties (NYSAC) to lobby state government on revenue proposals, initiatives and legislation designed to increase the efficiency of office operations and to ease the burden of state mandates on counties.

First elected in 1997, Mr. Merola is now serving his fourth term as County Clerk.

L. BUSH EARNS DEAN’S LIST HONORS from WELLS COLLEGE Lindsey Bush, class of 2014, of Averill Park, N.Y., was named to the Wells College Dean’s List for the Spring 2012 semester. The Dean’s List consists of students who earn at least a 3.5 grade point average for at least 12 hours of coursework in a given semester. Lindsey graduated from Averill Park High School and is majoring in English: creative writing at Wells.

BABYSITTING COURSE The Nassau Free Library will sponsor a Red Cross babysitter’s training class at the library from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31st. The fee is $25 which must be paid upon registration, and the class is open to students ages 11 - 14. Participants will learn how to care for infants and children, make good decisions and solve problems, handle emergencies, write resumes and interview for jobs, and much more. They will also receive a certificate and a copy of The Babysitter’s Handbook. Those taking the class will have one break during the day but will not be allowed to leave the library grounds. SUNY POTSDAM STUDENTS EARN SPOTS ON THE COLLEGE’S DEAN’S LIST The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named more than 350 students to the Dean’s List for the Spring 2012 semester. A total of 364 SUNY Potsdam students who excelled academically were honored for their high marks.

SIGN THEFTS ENDANGER LIVES – TOWNS ASK THE PUBLIC TO ASSIST IN EFFORTS The Towns of Sand Lake and Nassau, like other towns, have experienced a significant increase in road sign thefts. The thefts to date are in the many thousands of dollars. We need the public to assist our communities in apprehending those responsible.

Recently, because of the theft of a stop sign, there was a near collision in the Town of Nassau. This rash of thefts has led to the filing of a police reports and our town governments are seeking the maximum criminal charges.

The theft of road signs endangers the residents of our communities by delaying emergency services when they are unable to locate those in need. The theft of a stop sign could easily lead to death and serious injuries. Those involved in this type of theft should know that they are endangering public safety.

The public is encouraged to contact the State Police in Sand Lake (674-4441) or Schodack (732-4777) if they notice suspicious activity related to sign thefts or have any information.

New York State Penal Law allows for a $1000 fine and/or imprisonment for each sign theft.

HUDSON RIVER DAY AT CRAILO Crailo State Historic Site celebrates Hudson River Day on July 21, 2012 with special programming in our riverside park. The following are highlights from the July 11, 2012 Sand Lake Town Board Meeting: • Parking Ordinance Amendment – 2nd Dike Road – A local parking ordinance amendment was introduced to include no parking on the north side of 2nd Dike road from Zack Lane 356 feet east. This proposed amendment will help with local traffic congestion by making the area as safe as possible for everyone. A public hearing will be held on the proposed ordinance on August 8, 2012 at 7:30 pm.

• Appointment - Building and Zoning – The Town Board voted unanimously to appoint Michael F. Wager as Deputy Commissioner of Building and Zoning. Mike has served the Town well for more than 5 years and is responsible for building inspections, code enforcement, fire inspections, MS-4 coordination, sewer inspections and flood plain administration.

• Acceptance of Defibrillators – The Town Board gratefully accepted Sand Lake Ambulance’s offer for two automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) for use at the Town Hall/Town Library and our Town Beach. Sand Lake Ambulance will also provide medical direction, continued training and support to town staff and other interested parties to educate individuals in the proper use of the equipment.

• Community Van Service Guidelines – As the Town awaits the arrival of the new community van, the Board adopted guidelines and procedures for scheduling the van’s use. The van is equipped with wheelchair accessibility to assist our senior citizens and as practicable non-seniors with disabilities. If you are interested in volunteering to drive the van, please contact Councilwoman Chris Kronau for information at 674-3050.

• Grant Application – The Town Board has authorized me to file an application for grant funds from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The grant request is for $25,000 and, if awarded, will be used for preliminary designs for park land in town.

• Street Light Request – West Sand Lake Volunteer Fire Company – The Board passed a resolution to install a directional lighting fixture on an existing power pole to illuminate pedestrian cross walks on Firehouse Lane for necessary safety and security.

STAMMEL SEEKS IMPROVED FIRE PROTECTION FOR SO. AREAS OF RENSS. The Rensselaer County Legislature approved a resolution at the July 10 legislative meeting sponsored by Legislator Mike Stammel that seeks to improve fire protection in the southern area of the city. The resolution followed a fire on July 1 that damaged several homes on Aiken Avenue. Residents and Stammel said response to the blaze took more than several minutes and may be due to relocated fire houses and ongoing road work.

“We hope city leaders review their ability to respond to fires in the southern end of the city and consider changes that allow for a quicker response,” said Stammel Stammel was among the first on the scene of the July 1 fire and helped residents get to safety. Stammel said he is concerned about the amount of time it took to get city fire apparatus to the scene of the fire. Some of the delay may be caused by prolonged construction in the downtown, which hurts response times. The city administration has also closed fire houses which has also lengthened response times. At the time of the fire, city fire units were responding to an emergency medical call. The fire occurred in the Fort Crailo neighborhood, which is located on the other side of Routes 9 & 20 from the two city fire houses. There are also major road and bridge construction projects taking place between the neighborhood and the fire houses. Adding to that is the closure of three fire houses south of Partition Street. “I am worried about the time it takes to respond to a fire in this end of town. There is a considerable distance for fire units to travel, through multiple construction zones, and a number of residents are worried about the response time,” said Stammel.

“Because of the road construction projects and closure of the fire houses, this section of the city is located a good distance away from help when it is needed. The city should give some thought to stationing emergency apparatus closer to this area. In the event of an emergency elsewhere, mutual aid can be initiated,” added Stammel.

The Rensselaer Eagles are sponsoring a fundraiser for the victims of the fire. Donations can be dropped off at the Eagles lodge at 851 Broadway and checks made out to Rensselaer Eagles Fire Fund. A fundraiser will be held at a later date.

M. WOOD NAMED TO DEAN’S LIST AT SYRACUSE UNIV.

I would like to thank the many volunteers that have been assisting in various committees and programs. Your government is a team effort and we could not provide all that we do without their outstanding efforts.

Town Summer Camp is in full swing and the kids are having a great time. Thank you to our director Pat Sherman who is doing such a wonderful job. Thank you also to CampSchodack for their support of this program.

The Board has approved a resolution authorizing the submission of the Burden Lake sewer documents to the State Comptroller. This is an important step in the process of allowing for construction of this system. We have also authorized a grant application for construction funds.

We have completed the audits of town departments and the Justice Court and have begun review of the necessary repairs to the meeting room at the town hall. We expect to utilize reserve funds for any upgrades. It was discovered that insulation and fire protection are lacking from large areas of the room.

The Board has also approved payment for recently completed consultant work done to outline economic development strategies for the Rensselaer Plateau of which your town is a part.

These funds were provided by yet another grant secured by the Town.

An important Board meeting has been called for July 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Highway Complex on Central Nassau Road. This meeting is being held for residents to see our machinery up close and to facilitate ideas to deal with decade’s old equipment that is expiring and the rising costs of providing quality highway services to residents. All residents are encouraged to attend this meeting to see the tremendous challenges faced by our highway personnel.

Our community has experienced a significant increase in road sign thefts. The cost of these thefts is high in dollars for taxpayers and perhaps in lives. A recent near-collision because of the theft of a stop sign shows just how dangerous this crime is. Residents are encouraged to contact the Schodack State Police at 732-4777 with any information.

I would like to encourage you to visit the Nassau Library to see the ongoing historic exhibits presented by the Historic Preservation Committee. There are many great artifacts being presented. Councilman Carpentier has also secured a display case for the lobby of town hall for public exhibits as well.

Meghan Wood of Castleton, a biology and forensic science major in Syracuse University’s College of Arts & Sciences, has been named to the Spring 2012 Dean’s List at Syracuse University. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must achieve at least a 3.4 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the semester.

It brings to our understanding that it is because of Christ that both groups are also reconciled to God. In the sermon titled, “Building Bridges of Love and Forgiveness,” the Reverend Edward L. Kampen will help us to more completely understand that Christians are being built into a holy temple and a dwelling place for God. It is there that God will find a unity, a place for all people in their differences.

BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES PROGRAM NEEDS YOUR HELP CoNSERN S-U will be holding our free school supply program again this August. This program allows students to get the school supplies that they need and at no charge to them. The program has been extremely successful in the past, due largely to the wonderful support we have gotten from area churches and organizations. So, once again, we are appealing to you for help.

We will be setting up our “store” in August and need the following items: 3 subject notebooks, 3 ring binders (1 ½ inch, 2 inch, and 3 inch), scientific calculators (price around $10), pocket folders, glue sticks, colored pencils, markers, highlighters, subject dividers, zippered pencil cases, loose leaf paper (wide rule only), scissors, flash drives, protractors, pens, pencils… and especially new backpacks.

The cost of school supplies can make it very difficult for low income families to purchase what is needed. Our free supply program not only allows the students to be prepared for the first day of school but it also helps those students to start the school year in a positive way.

AN INVITATION TO PICK YOUR OWN BLUEBERRIES The Nassau Cooperative Community Food Compact happily invites you to a Blueberry Picking and Tasting Adventure on Saturday, July 21st, 2012. We are a member owned and operated cooperative dedicated to linking consumers with local food producers. On July 21st at 8:30 a.m., we will meet at Grace United Methodist Church, located at 42 Church Street in the village of Nassau. From there we will drive to Samascott’s Orchards on 5 Sunset Avenue, Kinderhook. Feel free to drive yourselves or you can catch a ride with us! Picking will last from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Thanks to the funds we received from the NYS “Fresh Connect” Grant, the first two pounds of berries per household are free. After that, Samascott’s charges $2/lb. Following the harvest, we will drive next door to the Hometown Foods Harvest Kitchen, owned by one of our members, where we will enjoy some blueberry refreshments and have the option to clean and freeze our berries. We should return to the church around noon.

Please remember to bring weather-appropriate clothing, including sun protection and lots of water! We also request that you provide your own containers for the berries. This is a great way to enjoy local, very fresh and inexpensive produce, and we hope that you will join us!

SKY: EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE WITH GOD A summer kids’ event called Sky will be hosted at Church of St. Mary at Clinton Heights from July 30 to August 3 from 9:00AM-NOON. Hear the latest advice from the Department of Health on eating fish from the Hudson River and its tributaries. DOGS IN HOT CARS Letter to the Editor: Every summer it is the same thing. Animal control officers and police are called to restaurant and shopping mall parking lots to rescue dogs left in vehicles. While it would seem just common sense not to leave an animal in a car in this weather it is still going on with frightening regularity. All manner of excuses are offered including the most popular: “I was just going to be in the store for a few minutes”, “I left the windows down” and “I parked in the shade”.

Just a few minutes can be a few minutes too long since a car is like a hot house trapping heat inside. On a 75 degree day, a car can reach 100 degrees in only 10 minutes, 82 degrees outside, 109 inside the car, and so on. When the windows are open, there may be a difference of a few degrees, the same with shade, but not enough to make a deadly situation safe.

What can happen? Your dog can die. Your car window can be smashed by police in order to get your dog out. You can get arrested for animal cruelty. You can tell your story to an unsympathetic judge. You can pay a fine. It is against the law to leave your companion animal in a hot car. There is no excuse for it. ~ Catherine Crawmer, Animal Control Officer 477-8230

QUESTION: My supervisor at work is constantly asking me to multi-task, but when I try to do more than one thing at a time, I feel stressed by the pressure to perform in that way and I become less precise in carrying out my assignments. Is that normal?

N. Thomas, Brainard, NY ANSWER: Even though our culture encourages us to multitask, medical science has proven that it’s impossible for the human brain to do more than one thing at a time. Even the computer, which is a creation of the human mind and can do calculations very quickly, is always focusing its attention on only one thing: one or zero. Actually, the more we ask our brain to multi-task, a large amount of adrenaline is pumped into the body so that the brain can quickly move back and forth between two objects. Over time, the adrenaline rush depresses our immune system and results in depression. A new study has recently found that the real key to high levels of precise and creative work without stress is to train the mind to meditate.

David Levy, a computer scientist and professor with the Information School at the University of Washington, found that meditators were able to stay on task longer and were less distracted. Levy and his co-authors discovered that meditation also improved test subjects’ memory while reducing their stress.

In his study, Levy had one group of human resource managers undergo eight weeks of meditation training. A second group got eight weeks of body-relaxation training, and a third group received no initial training but then was given the same training as the first group after eight weeks. Subjects were given a stressful test on their multitasking abilities before and after each eight-week period. They had to use email, calendars, instant messaging, phones and word-processing tools to perform common office duties. Researchers evaluated their speed, accuracy and number of times they switched tasks. The participants also were asked to record their stress levels and memory performance while doing the jobs. Researchers found that the meditation group not only had lower stress levels during the multitasking tests, they were also able to concentrate longer without being distracted. But for the other two groups — those who received relaxation breathing training and those who had no initial training — stress did not go down. However, when the third group finally received meditation training after eight weeks, their stress levels also decreased. In addition, the study found that those who meditated also spent more time on tasks, didn’t switch between different chores as often and took no longer to get their work done than the other participants. Meditation is a lot like doing reps at a gym. It strengthens your attention muscle.

The meditation and easy-gentle yoga curriculum at the American Meditation Institute is accredited by the American Medical Association, Albany Medical College and the N.Y.S. Nurses Association. It is also endorsed by nationally recognized physicians Dr. Oz, Dean Ornish MD and Bernie Siegel MD.

DFD ANSWERS 39 ALARMS IN JUNE DeFreestville volunteer fire fighters answered 39 emergency alarms in June, raising the total of alarms for the first half of 2012 to 243, according to the monthly report of Fire Chief Raymond Swart.

Chief Swart said DFD’s alarms last month included three structure fires, 15 rescue or motor vehicle accident alarms, five false alarms with good intent, five unintentional false alarms, two emergency medical service calls in cooperation with the North Greenbush Ambulance Association, two outdoor rubbish fires, two carbon monoxide detector responses, two alarm system malfunctions, a hazardous condition call, one malicious false alarm and a cover assignment.

The Chief said DFD volunteers spent more than 400 total fire fighter hours at alarms during the month, and more than 1,950 hours for the year so far.

The DeFreestville Fire Department in North Greenbush Fire District # 1 is a volunteer organization established in 1945 that provides emergency services 24 hours a day. RENSSELAER COUNTY OFFERS HELP FOR SENIORS TO BEAT THE HEAT Rensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino outlined the steps the County is taking to help seniors better handle high temperatures.

“When the temperature rises to the levels predicted, taking proper precautions is vital to preventing the effects of excessive heat,” said Jimino. “By following some simple safety measures the severe health problems including sunstroke, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and possibly even death that can occur will be avoided.”

Jimino warned that everyone can be affected by the high heat, but seniors are especially vulnerable. Safety tips for hot, steamy days are being distributed to homebound seniors in Rensselaer County and to the five county-operated senior centers and information has been published on the County web site (www.rensco.com) in an effort to help residents cope with the heat. These tips include such precautions as staying indoors when temperatures reach 90 degrees; drinking plenty of nonalcoholic liquids to remain hydrated; taking cool baths or showers and allowing the air to dry you; using fans to draw cool air into your home at night and keeping shades and drapes closed on windows in direct sunlight; dressing for coolness, including wearing loose-fitting cotton clothing that is lightweight and light-colored; taking it easy and eating a well balanced diet.

“Our senior centers always provide a wonderful place for seniors but on extremely hot days they can provide great place to just stop in and cool off for a bit,” said Jimino. “Seniors with or without air conditioning should feel free to come to the senior centers between nine and three o’clock Monday through Friday.

Each center is air conditioned, and even if you don’t want to participate in the activities, you can sit and read a book or just enjoy being in a cool atmosphere.”

Jimino said the senior center directors have been reaching out to the more vulnerable seniors to ensure that they are prepared for the hot weather and to invite them to come in to the senior center.
